Cooked and stewed for hours on end, this dish only works with lessthan-premium cuts of beef that can absorb all the spices while being tenderized in the prolonged cooking process. Some elegant hotels in Bali unsuccessfully try to break this rule but using imported tenderloin only to end up with goulash as the long cooking process decimates the more expensive cuts of imported meat. Claus for concern as shopping mall cancels Santa

Traders in the Albury Centro shopping centre in New South Wales have started a petition urging centre management not to cancel Santa this year.
Centro management told retailers on Tuesday that Santa would not be making an appearance in the busy shopping centre this Christmas. Footprints can ID as easily as fingerprints

How a bare foot strikes the ground as one walks reveals your identity almost as well as a fingerprint, according to a new study.
The discovery means that one day retinal scans, voice recognition and old-fashioned mugshots may be joined by footpressure patterns as a means of confirming ID. Previous research has shown that everyone has a unique stride. Computers can determine "gait patterns" - the way a person walks, saunters, swaggers or sashays - with up to 90 per cent accuracy. Scientists led by Todd Pataky at Shinshu University in Tokida, Japan, looked at enhancing this finding by measuring how the foot hits and leaves the ground during walking. They used 3D image processing and a technique called image extraction to analyse the heel strike, roll-toforefoot and push-off by the toes among 104 volunteers. Footstep patterns were matched to the individual with 99.6 per cent accuracy, according to their paper, published on Wednesday in Britain's Journal of the Royal Society Interface. The study is "proof of concept," meaning that it was carried out in experimental conditions among volunteers who were barefoot to see whether the theory was sound. Dr Pataky said the technology would be useful in security checks. But it would only work in situations where an individual wants to be recognised, "since anyone can modify their gait," he explained. "Automated airport security checks, ATM security, controlled building access - in all these cases, an individual could walk normally to be positively identified." Further work is needed to see whether feet wearing shoes throw up similar telltale patterns. "We have some pilot data for walking with shoes, but have not yet conducted systematic testing," Dr Pataky said.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

'day again people and let's do the Kuta Weekly for another week. This week is a milestone issue being issue 250.Thats the better part of five years by my reckoning. I have to take my hat off to all the people that have contributed to the creation of Balis Premier Weekly Newspaper The Kuta Weekly and say a great big thank you to you all. Once upon a time the paper was a single sheet of photo copied black and white only news, basically promoting the Kuta Town Houses development and steadily grew into Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com a full colour, well read newspaper covering lots of sport and left field light hearted news content from all corners of the globe. A great read while sitting around the pool or over morning coffee. The paper has included over the last few years a joke page, Sudoku and crosswords along with horoscopes and a voucher section that is very popular with most tourists. The direction the paper has taken over the last 3 years is driven by the intelligence and tenacity of a very focussed team of professional business people that beyond the scorn and ridicule of others have successful cultivated and published the paper to the visitors and expats of Bali for FREE each and every week. The sponsors, big or small within the pages are the single biggest factor in the growth of the business so Like it, love it or hate it folks, the Kuta Weekly is here to stay and will become, in time, the biggest and most well read newspaper on the Island and will continue to promote the decent business operator in and around Kuta for many years to come. A super huge thankyou goes out to all our loyal sponsors. Moving along I will tell you all about a fantastic tool for most travellers to the island and even expats being the Bali travel forum. This is a great place to find out what's going on in Bali at any given time or post questions relating to things that you are just unsure about and for the better part of the threads you can get a fairly good idea about anything in Bali, however I will remind most internet or computer users that know half a thing or two about any type of topic forum that there is a certain amount of people that have nothing better to do, other than fill the forums with rubbish and use them as their own personal little gossip rooms. The fact that these half witts need to hide behind false names within the forums, makes it clear to most people that they have hidden agendas and are simply left with too much time on their hands so they sledge away thinking they are invisible. As a final word of wisdom I beg you to take a look at the configuration of windows or even take advice from someone who is in the I.T industry and be told that you are not invisible and your identity is completely transparent to anyone who wants to find out. Why do you think they ask you to register before you start using forums, it's not to include you on the Christmas card list. Maybe the Kuta Weekly needs to expose a few internet address protocols, so the travellers that actually use the forum for their intended purpose actually get to do so and know who is posting the crap. Anyways with that aside the Bali Travel forum is a great place to get the low down on things in and around Bali, just be smart and sift through the rubbish first. Ok folks again I have spat the flem from my chest for another week and feel so much better for doing so. I hope you all enjoy your time on the island staying safe, happy, healthy and always remember, for all of you who talk about me thanks for making me the centre of your world. The way I see it is the more people that despise me, the less I have to get along with. Enjoy your week, Karn the Pies, ALIASJ..

Psychic sheep tips All Blacks - wool they win?

A rugby-mad sheep touted as the world's latest animal psychic picked the All Blacks to win their opening World Cup match tonight, in New Zealand's answer to the late, great Paul the Octopus.
The sheep, named Sonny Wool after All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams, chose to munch on hay under a New Zealand flag rather than another container with the flag of Tonga, delighting a small crowd of onlookers in suburban Wellington . S o n n y Wool, who was w e a r i n g a custom-made b l a c k j e r s e y, hesitated slightly before going for the New Zealand h a y , i n a prediction that appears highly likely to be borne "It sniffed around Tonga out in the opening World Cup and then it walked to New Zealand, with a bit of coaxing from the crowd," an onlooker said. "It would have been in the oven if it chose Tonga, so it chose wisely." Now Sonny Wool, who is three years old and was born in Dannevirke, will hope to follow in the multiple footsteps of the world-renowned Paul, who correctly tipped the result of eight matches at last year's football World Cup in South Africa. Dan Boyd, Sonny Wool's "agent", said the sheep had demonstrated mystical qualities from a young age and enjoys chasing rugby balls in his pen. "Sonny Wool could predict when it was going to rain and tap on the door to get inside," Mr Boyd said. In the short time since Paul's emergence - and death last October - the world has seen a host of imitators, including an avowedly clairvoyant crocodile in Australia and China's Bo Si, the psychic panda. However, Sonny Wool's first prediction has a strong chance of coming true with the All Blacks winning all three previous games against Tonga by an average of 74 points.

China's answer to high divorce rates: Love letters sent with a sevenyear delay
POSTAL authorities in Beijing have come up with a novel solution to a soaring divorce rate - love letters sent with a seven-year delay. The new service allows couples in the first flush of romance to post a letter their partner will only receive seven years later, it is reported, saying that was when relationships often began to cool. Divorce is becoming increasingly common in China. In Beijing, the divorce rate has risen from 11,582 in 2004 to 21,013 last year, according to government data. Special envelopes containing a card for a personalised message went on sale in Beijing on September 9 - considered auspicious because the words "nine nine" in Chinese sound similar to the word "forever". Couples who marry in one of the capital's 17 registration offices will also receive one of the envelopes. "We hope the love letters may save some marriages in the future,'' a postal official surnamed Ma has said. But some people were less enthusiastic about the plan. "It'd be more than depressing if I received a love letter from seven years ago and I was no longer with my thenloved one," Tsinghua University graduate Sun Lubin reportedly said.

AIDS, a finding that Rather, the team plans may help prevent the to study these felines disease in cats and as a new way to advance AIDS develop treatments for research in people. HIV and the feline The study involved inserting monkey genes that block the virus into feline eggs, or oocytes, before they are fertilized. The scientists also inserted jellyfish genes that make the modified cells glow an eerie green colour -- making the altered genes easy to spot. Tests on cells taken from the cats show they are resistant to feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, which causes AIDS in cats. "This provides the unprecedented capability to study the effects of giving AIDSprotection genes into an AIDSvulnerable animal. Besides people, cats and to some extent, chimpanzees, are the only mammals that develop a naturally occurring virus that causes AIDS. Cats suffer from this all over the world. Just as the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, does in people, FIV works by wiping out infection-fighting T-cells. FIV infects mostly feral cats, of which there are half billion in the world, and it is transmitted by biting, largely by males defending their territory, but companion cats are affected as well. In both humans and cats, proteins called restriction factors that normally fight off viral infections are defenceless against HIV and FIV because the viruses evolved version of the disease. Researchers said the work has several potential uses. " T h i s technology can be applied to a wide range of species, for many of which there are clear applications and potential benefits," Dr. Laurence Tiley of the University of Cambridge said in a statement. "It will be interesting to see how enthusiastically this capability in cats is received and adopted by the HIV and neurobiological research communities and what other research opportunities it offers. A representative non-primate animal model would be a fantastic new tool for studying HIV pathogenesis." So far, Poeschla's team has only tested cells taken from the animals and found they were resistant to FIV. But eventually they plan to expose the cats to the virus and see if they are protected. "If you could show that you confer protection to these animals, it would give us a lot of information about protecting humans," Poeschla said. For cats, this may eventually lead to gene therapy or new drug treatments for FIV, he said.

these restriction factors are capable of fighting the virus and the team used one such gene from the rhesus monkey. For the team, which included collaborators in Japan, the trick was to get the monkey gene for the restriction factor -known as TRIMCyp -- into cats to block cells from becoming infected with the virus. To do that, they used a harmless virus to insert the genes into the eggs, a process that has already been done in other mammals including mice, pigs, sheep and marmoset monkeys. To make it easier to check which cells had the monkey gene, the team also inserted a green fluorescent protein gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria that makes them glow green. "We did it to mark cells easily just by looking under the microscope or shining a light on the animal." The method worked so well nearly all offspring from the modified eggs have the restriction factor genes. And these defence proteins are made throughout the cat's body. The team has mated two of the three original green-glowing

As part of the sweep that netted Kingery, Mexican police also found gunpowder, grenade pins and other components to assemble firearms in several different houses in Sinaloa state, home to the dominant drug cartel with the same name. The arrest is part of an ongoing operation with U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents which led to the arrest of another American gun runner last month. The Obama administration recently announced a major shake-up at the U.S. agency after it botched an operation to track smuggled guns into Mexico, known as "Fast and Furious," that allowed weapons to flow freely over the border.

Bali to Have Northern Airport in Buleleng by 2014?
Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, claims the construction of a new international airport in Buleleng, North Bali, is important to evenly distribute tourism visitors across the island. Wacik says that an airport in the north will split visitors across both the northern and southern regions of Bali. Wacik also says that a new airport facility in Bali's north will act as a stimulus for development in the areas surrounding the airfield. Q u o t e d i n Beritabali.com, Wacik said: If the infrastructure and facilities in Buleleng are good, the tourists spending time in Buleleng will increase. I am convinced that Buleleng tourists will not journey to Denpasar. Location for new Airport Still Not Clear While public debate on the proposed airport for North Bali continues, an exact location for the proposed facility remains undecided. 30 engineers from India are reportedly performing site surveys, examining various options. Minister Wacik told the press that the engineers are seeking a suitable location for the proposed airport. Among the criteria on the engineers checklist are selection of a location far from mountains and suitable from a development standpoint for

Federal police captured Jean Baptiste Kingery last week at a house in the Pacific tourist town of Mazatlan in Sinaloa state, where they seized a small cache of guns and found a Hummer sports utility vehicle parked outside. Law enforcement officials accuse Kingery of delivering parts used to make grenades and firearms, some bought at stores and online in the United States, to the Sinaloa cartel, headed by Mexico's most wanted man Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. Kingery's capture raises the possibility powerful cartels are manufacturing weapons inside Mexico and not just smuggling arms from the United States, the attorney

"It's the biggest preoccupation of business travellers besides getting their work done, so we try to make fitness available on any basis they ask for." In-room fitness options aren't limited to Pilates DVDs and yoga mats, although both are in high demand at most of the company's 78 hotels worldwide. The business traveller's obsession with staying fit on the road reflects the travails of modern travel. "If you're coming off an 18-hour trip to China, you feel the need to be pampered," she said. "If you're a frequent guest and you ask for a treadmill, after two or three times it will be in your room without having to ask.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 Saying farewell to plans you once regarded as hugely promising may seem a defeat. But once you start thinking about the amount of time you've spent keeping them afloat, and what you've received in return, your attitude won't just shift, you'll realise that the sooner they go, the better it Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 When certain rather exciting ideas were first raised in late August, you were as dubious as you were hopeful. So you weren't surprised when nothing much happened. But now not only are things happening, and with worrying ease. That's because a great deal was going on behind the scenes. Now it's all falling into place. Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 There's been talk of a serious reorganisation of elements of your domestic set up or working life since late August. However, others haven't been prepared to go along with these changes. Now, the sudden events and heightened emotions triggered by the Full Moon, are forcing even the most reluctant to take action. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 It's unlike you to tiptoe around the truth, even if you know others really would rather not face the facts. But you have been. However, the current powerful alliance between Mercury and the forthright Pluto, which is positioned in Capricorn, gives you little choice but to discuss certain tricky issues frankly and fully. Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 Don't think there's a nobility in fighting for one particular venture simply because it once meant a great deal to you. Times have changed and so have you. Once you've let this go and are free to reflect, you'll realise just how much you gave and how little you got in return. Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19 True, the Pisces Full Moon is unsettling. But you've dealt with plenty of life's emotional ups and downs. It's the risk that you'll get so involved in the dramas of others that you're overwhelmed. Offer to give them a hand, but no more. However cold that seems, issues are theirs to contend with.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20

For ages you've known you'd have to substantially alter elements of your way of living or activities out in the world. But you didn't know where to begin, so did nothing. Now the events triggered by the Full Moon are forcing you to take action, and far more swiftly that you'd have imagined.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 Fighting for who or what you believe in may seem noble, but it's worth asking a few questions before you actually go to battle. The actual situations in question have changed, more than you realise. Once you've had a chance to talk things over, you could well decide they're not really justified. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 You may be in no mood to discuss practical and financial matters. However, because the current Full Moon brings these to a head, there's no escaping these issues. What you learn as a result of these exchanges won't just be informative, it could completely alter your perspective on those particular concerns in question. Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 Late last week your ruler Mercury joined the Sun and the charming Venus in Virgo. Since then you've managed to resolve various issues, some of which have been an increasing source of concern. Complex as those that remain are, the issues you've already worked out will make these far easier to deal with.

Woman bites elderly man in "vampire" attack

A Florida woman who allegedly claimed to be a vampire has been charged with battery after violently biting a man in a wheelchair on his face and arms.
Milton Ellis, 69, told police in St. Petersburg, Florida, that he and Josephine Smith, 22, met on the street and went to the porch of a vacant restaurant to get out of the rain. He said he fell asleep in his motorized wheelchair and woke up to find Smith on top of him. Ellis told authorities that she said, "I'm a vampire. I am going to eat you" and then began to bite him. According to a police affidavit, Ellis was bitten on his arm and lips, leaving him bloody before he was able to escape and call police. He was later treated with stitches at a local hospital and released. After arriving at the scene, police said they found Smith bloody and half-naked nearby, but that she had no memory of what happened and did not identify herself as a vampire, Smith, who was arrested is currently being held in detention with bail set at $50,000.

University makes world's biggest stir-fry

Staff and students at the University of Massachusetts celebrated the start of the new semester by making the world's biggest stirfry.
Using a custombuilt, 4.27m-wide frying pan, the 1820kg meal included 360kg of chicken, 227kg of onions, 180kg of carrots and 135kg of broccoli. They also added capsicum, green beans, bok choy, peanuts, basil and garlic. K e n To o n g , executive director of Auxiliary Enterprises, says the purpose was to stress sustainability and promoting healthy eating. Many of the vegetables were grown at a student-run farm. A Guinness Book of World Records representative was on hand to certify the record. The previous record was 1050kg.

ALL ABOUT BALI

Ubud, a must visit in Bali.
fields still blanket much of the area and can easily be reached by foot or on bicycle. The fields may be hiked along a twisting path for miles through tiny, thatched-roof villages. You will find the start of one of the trails just past the small market outside the "top" entrance of the Ubud Monkey Forest. Hiking these tranquil fields in the morning to the sounds village life beginning is something you will never forget. Get Healthy With scores of holistic medicine practitioners now living around Ubud, it is no surprise that so many spas and meditation centers have opened up. In town you can easily find all types of Eastern and Western massage centers, reiki healers, herbal medicine shops, and even acupuncture practitioners. The Bodyworks Healing Centre was the first of such places and has been providing natural healing to the local people long before Ubud was on the tourist map. Petulu A strange, natural phenomenon occurs each evening just north of Ubud in the village of Petulu. Thousands of white herons arrive here around 6:00 p.m. and prepare to roost for the night before flying off again in the morning. The birds first began coming here after a communist massacre in 1965 but no one is sure why they continue to return. Local lore holds that these are the souls of those that were killed. Such a predictable gathering of these large and beautiful birds is a spectacle not to be missed. Balinese Dance Performances No visit to Ubud is complete without seeing at least one traditional dance performance. Although the performances are very touristoriented, this is a great opportunity to see classic Hindu legends being told through dancers in colorful, traditional costumes. Ubud Palace is a popular place providing shows nightly as well as Pura Dalem which has twice-weekly shows and fire dances performed outside. Hindu Temples Ubud and the villages in the surrounding area contain dozens of examples of beautiful Hindu Temples. Most temples are free to visit or ask for a small donation. Proper attire is required, although many temples will loan or rent a sarong for your visit. Pura Penataran Asih in nearby Pejeng is a charming temple containing the largest bronze kettle drum in the world. The Bronze Age drum is known as the "Moon of Pejeng" and dates back to 300 B.C. Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung is Bali's most sacred temple site. A complex of 23 temples can be explored on a day trip from Ubud. Elephant Cave Only two km south of Ubud lies one of the most sacred sites in Bali - Goa Gajah. Also known as the Elephant Cave, this Hindu site dates back to the 11th Century and was nominated as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cave is believed to have been home to Hindu priests and the entrance is carved with menacing figures from Hindu legend. The interior of the cave is dark and contains a few religious relics. The site is still used for worship by locals so proper dress is required to enter. Ubud Monkey Forest The shady, green Ubud Monkey Forest is the most popular stop for tourists in the town of Ubud itself. Hundreds of playful and interactive Macaque monkeys call the sacred forest home and roam freely around the tree canopy and temple complex. Walking around the winding, mosscovered brick paths of the Monkey Forest is a great way to escape the heat of the afternoon, but mind your belongings. The steady stream of tourists has made the monkeys bold enough to even reach into pockets in search of something interesting!

The quiet, touristy town of Ubud is considered by many to be the epicenter for arts and culture in Bali. Ubud (pronounced Ew-bood) has developed a reputation as a place with a positive vibe, possibly explaining why so many artists and naturalists have settled in the lush, green areas around town. Although tourism in Ubud is growing faster than the town can keep up, there is still a certain tranquility and happiness to be found in the clean air. The town has become a popular and peaceful retreat from the parties and crowded madness of Kuta just two hours away. Shopping in Ubud The influx of tourism in Ubud mixed with the proximity of so many artists has caused a great deal of unique boutiques and shops to open. Unlike the tacky, beach-tourist feeling of shopping in Kuta, Ubud provides a much more sophisticated experience. Local shops are filled with unique and beautiful crafts, art work, carvings, jewelery, and gifts to take back home. The sprawling, indoor Ubud Market caters mostly to tourists in search of cheap souvenirs. Be sure to haggle prices - negotiation is expected - or you may end up paying triple what something is worth. Walking the Rice Fields Ubud has spilled out into its tiny surrounding villages, but the growth has not ruined the natural setting of the beautiful surroundings. Green rice

Last week, New York City prosecutors dropped charges, allowing him to return to France where he faced a mostly chilly public reception and unease among his political allies. F o r m e r U . A slight majority of the respondents around the world, 51 percent, said women were just as likely as men to engage in sexual indiscretions but less apt to get caught in the act. Perhaps it's no surprise, Mexicans agreed, at 51 percent.

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love... I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead.' Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry.. How soon can I go home?

A poll shows 57 percent of Mexicans would be either very likely or somewhat likely to tolerate the sexual indiscretions of stars and politicians. They were followed by Belgians at 55 percent. In the United States, the tolerance factor was 48 percent. France, in fact, was way down the list at only 33 percent, while Japan was the least forgiving country at only 28 percent. In total, 44 percent of some 18,700 respondents in more than 20 countries said they would likely tolerate a scandal. The survey also asked if behavior exhibited in sex scandals was reflective of people's true personalities, or if fame and power led them to think they could get away with their acts. In France, some 80 percent of respondents said fame was the root cause, while Mexico was about equally divided: 49 percent on the side of power and 51 percent on personality. Throughout all the world, the decision was roughly split with 46 percent saying power and 54 percent citing personal characteristics. In the U.S. the percentages were 43 percent power, 57 personality. "There is a Jekyll and Hyde issue here, and in some places the behavior is just more acceptable," In recent months Strauss-

'Stalker' phoned ex-boyfriend 65,000 times

A woman in the Netherlands has been charged with stalking after allegedly calling her ex-boyfriend 65,000 times in the past 12 months. After the 62-year-old recipient of the phone calls filed a complaint, the woman was arrested. Police also seized mobile phones and computers from her home in Rotterdam. T h e woman said that her behaviour was completely normal; they were in a relationship. The maths show she had to have called 178 times a day. That's 7.8 calls an hour, 24 hours a day - one phone call every 8.1 minutes without ever stopping. Nicolette Stoel, prosecution spokeswoman at the Hague, said the woman claimed, during a preliminary hearing, that because she was dating the man, the amount of phone calls she placed was not unreasonable. However, the man denied their relationship. The court has ordered her not to contact the man again.

Lawrence, who has not played since injuring his hamstring in the Tigers round 22 victory over St George Illawarra, said he was close to playing in last Friday's qualifying final with the Dragons but was a late scratching as a precaution. Coach Tim Sheens confirmed Lawrence would be selected in the team announced on Tuesday, and while he was wary of saying the 22-year-old was a "sure thing" Lawrence himself says there is no question about his availability. "I'm playing no matter what," he told reporters on Monday. "I was pretty close (last week), I worked really hard earlier in the week and put my body through a lot. "Not just my hammy, my body was pretty sore later in the week and on our session on Thursday I had another run but my body was feeling the effects of a tough early week and the medical staff thought that going into a game fatigued like that is probably not the best preparation, so they decided to give me another week and freshen up." Lawrence, who thought his season was over when he dislocated his hip against Canberra in round three, said it had been a tough year dealing with a series of injuries. "Obviously when I first did my hip I thought 'that's the season' so my first thoughts were basically to think about next year," he said. "I've worked pretty hard to get myself back. "... (It's been) very frustrating, it just feels like every time I get over one thing and I come to the back end of it something else happens.

Rapira, Rodney free for NRL finals

Warriors front rower Sam Rapira is set to take on the Wests Tigers in Saturday's elimination NRL final despite being charged for a dangerous throw.
The New Zealand international's tackle on Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough in Saturday night's 40-10 loss only attracted a grade one charge from the match review panel. An early guilty plea will allow him to face the Tigers in Sydney. Manly forward Shane Rodney was charged with a grade one careless high tackle from his team's 42-8 win over North Queensland, but will escape suspension regardless of his plea. It means he will be available for the Sea Eagles' preliminary final in two weeks time against the winner of Brisbane and St George Illawarra. Rodney struck North Queensland's Cory Paterson high, however it had nothing to do with the neck injury suffered by the Cowboys forward in the same tackle. Cowboys winger Ash Graham was charged with a grade one careless high tackle offence, but like Rodney, escapes

Judd claims second MVP award

Brownlow Medal favourite Chris Judd says it is no coincidence that the rise in influence of his Carlton midfield colleagues has coincided with his second AFL players' association's most valuable player (MVP) award.
The Blues skipper on Monday night became just the fifth multiple winner in the history of the player-voted award, which he previously won with West Coast in 2006. It adds to his long list of honours, which also includes Brownlows won at two clubs, with the Eagles in 2004 and the

Blues last year. Judd said he had a stellar midfield around him when he won his previous MVP award with the Eagles and the fact that midfield team-mates such as Marc Murphy and Heath Scotland had taken a step up this year was a big factor in Monday night's win. "I think what really happened is Marc Murphy stepped up and just had such an amazing year that it really lightened the load on the rest of us," he said. "Not just Murph, but the other midfielders as well have really had really strong years and that's made for a much lighter load on me." He said it was a good sign of the Blues' depth that they won Sunday's elimination final against Essendon, despite his own quieter-than-normal game. "I don't think any player in the competition is ever completely secure about where they fit in the picture and I'm always surprised to be rated so highly by my peers." Judd joined Ablett, Greg Williams, Wayne Carey and Michael Voss as players to have won the award more than once. He was also voted the AFL's best captain for 2011, adding to a list of honours which include five club best and fairests, two with the Eagles and three with the Blues, as well as the 2005 Norm Smith Medal and captaining West Coast to the 2006 premiership. Essendon's Dyson Heppell was named best first-year player, having last week received the AFL's Rising Star award. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel had his second successive Formula One world championship almost sealed and delivered after winning the Italian Grand Prix.
The 24-year-old German, who had started on pole position for the 10th time in 13 races, stretched his overall lead to a mighty 112 points after Australian team mate and closest rival Mark Webber crashed out. With only 150 points remaining to be won from the last six grands prix, Vettel has now won eight races this season and can clinch the title in Singapore on September 25 if results go his way. McLaren's Jenson Button finished runner-up for the third season in a row at Monza with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, last year's winner from pole, giving the sea of red-shirted fans something to cheer about with third place at his team's home race. Vettel, who took his first Formula One win at Monza with Red Bull's Italian-based sister team Toro Rosso on 2008, let all the emotions flood out on his return to the podium. He now has 284 points to double world champion Alonso's 172 and Button's 167. "When you stand up there you feel so blessed. It doesn't happen to many people," said Vettel who swerved across to the pit wall with one finger raised as he crossed the line. "I don't know if we could have challenged Sebastian today... it's a pity we had such a poor start," said Button, who qualified third but was sixth at the end of the first lap. Schumacher, with plenty of fans in the throng of flag-waving fans flooding on to the finish straight for the podium celebrations, finished fifth ahead of former Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa. For the first time in Formula One, the top five finishers were all world champions. Webber crash Massa was the last unlapped driver, on a day when only 15 of the 24 starters finished at the fastest circuit on the calendar, and was lucky to escape with an undamaged car after tangling with Webber. Webber, who had started the day second overall, tried to pass Massa on lap five but hit the back of the Ferrari and lost the front wing, which became wedged under the car. He then crashed into the tyre wall at Parabolica. "I think we are all battling for second place now," he said of the championship. Spain's Jaime Alguersuari was seventh for Toro Rosso and Britain's Paul di Resta, of Italian descent, eighth for Force India. Brazilian Bruno Senna, nephew of the late triple champion Ayrton, scored his first points in Formula One with ninth place for Renault and Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi claimed the final point for Toro Rosso.

very, very good race car and a fantastic day today. "It's the best podium in the world. The only thing that could make it better is probably wearing a red suit." On a sweltering afternoon in the royal park near Milan, Alonso had the home fans leaping in excitement at the start by seizing the lead, roaring past Vettel with one wheel on the grass, from fourth place on the grid. The Spaniard held his advantage for the first four laps thanks to the safety car, which had to be deployed immediately after Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi lost control of his HRT, skidding across a corner and slamming into Vitaly Petrov's Renault. Germany's Nico Rosberg was also caught in the mayhem, retiring his Mercedes on the spot.

In the San Francisco Bay area where tolerance is king, it is a rare politician willing to clamp down on citizens who let it all hang out.
B u t S a n Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener stepped into that position earlier this week when he introduced an ordinance that would require nudists to cover their seats in public places and wear clothes in restaurants. Public nudity, he explains, is legal in San Francisco and in recent years a group known informally as Naked Guys have shown unbridled enthusiasm for appearing in the nude. "I see it pretty regularly, and unfortunately there are nudists who are not doing what they should," The nudists, who expose themselves most often in the city's famous gay neighborhood, the Castro District, have got Wiener and

The All Blacks selectors are sweating over the fitness of ace playmaker Dan Carter, as they held off finalising their squad to play Japan in Hamilton on Friday.
Carter is the automatic first-choice fly half for the All Blacks but he has been unable to train with the squad since their bruising encounter with Tonga last Friday at Eden Park. Never one to shy away from defensive duties, Carter was pummelled several times by the powerful Tongan pack and All Blacks assistant coach Steve Hansen was not prepared to confirm he would be right to play Japan. "Dan is coming right. He got a hit in the back so he's a bit sore so we'll have to wait and see how he goes. That's why we name the team on Wednesday,"

role. Hansen also praised Japan's opening match performance against France where the less experienced Japanese trailed by four points with 10 minutes remaining before the score blew out to a 47-21 victory to the French at North harbour Stadium. "They (Japan) certainly played with a lot of passion and finesse and we're looking forward to playing them because it will help our game and we'll have to speed up to try and stay with them," he said. "They got to a point where they could have actually won the game. Whether they had the self belief to do that is questionable and the toll of the pace that they played at probably overcame them at the end.

said Hansen. Carter appeared below his best against Tonga in the 41-10 win and his usually reliable kicking radar deserted him as he landed just three of six conversion attempts and one penalty. Meanwhile, Hansen hinted Mils Muliaina and Conrad Smith are likely to start against Japan after missing the Tonga match but he says there will not be wholesale changes. "You might see Conrad Smith coming back into the centres, I don't think too many people are going to see that as a negative," Hansen said. "You might see someone like Mils (Muliaina) get a start so we can see which one of those two is playing the best to go through the rest of the tournament," he added, referring to Israel Dagg, the challenger for the full-back

The injury to Digby Ioane is a big setback to Australia's World Cup campaign but the in-form winger's backline team-mates are confident they have the talent in their squad to replace him.
Ioane, who has been formidable this season with the Queensland Reds and Australia, fractured his thumb in the Wallabies' opening 32-6 victory over Italy at the weekend and will miss the remainder of the pool stage at least. Coach Robbie Deans has several options to replace Ioane for this weekend's match against Ireland, including Drew Mitchell, who scored seven tries at the last World Cup, and James O'Connor, who came off the bench to great effect against the Italians in Albany. "Digby's a world-class player and he gets over the advantage line more often than not, so it's a big loss," half-back Will Genia said. "But we have players like Drewy (Mitchell) and obviously James coming back into the

"He's (Ioane) a bit upset but he's a positive guy and always got a smile on his face," he said. "He's just looking forward to getting the chance to play again." Adam AshleyCooper was once the most notably versatile of the Wallabies backs but he says there are now several others with the flexibility to be able to cover for the "massive blow" of Ioane's injury. Normally a centre, AshleyCooper scored Australia's second try after starting on the wing against the Italians last Sunday and says he would be happy to play in any position as long as he was in the starting XV. "I guess losing Digby throws a spanner in the works and I'm sure they'll be a few players unsure of where they will be playing this week," he said. "The beauty of who we've got in this squad, the backline players, is there are not many specialists, we've all got a bit of the utility tag. "We've got the talent and the depth to cover any position and that will hopefully pay off when it comes to losing Digby.

starting line-up as well. We'll see what Robbie wants to do but I'm sure they'll be some quality players to put their hands up." Not only was Ioane bookmakers' favourite to finish the tournament as top try scorer but he also played an integral role in Australia's backline defence, covering for Quade Cooper in the fly half position. "Whoever jumps in on the wing will have to defend that first channel," Genia said. "Whoever it is, they are all good tacklers, good defenders." Plenty of depth Genia says Ioane, who will stay with the squad and undergo surgery, is still confident of being part of the Wallabies campaign to win a third World Cup later in the tournament.

F o r t o u g h taskmaster Ross Lyon, there was no sugar-coating the nature of St Kilda's first-week exit from the finals.
After the most dramatic of off-seasons, the Saints stumbled into the 2011 campaign. The losing grand finalists of 2009 and 2010 won only one of their first seven games. They had slumped to 15th on the ladder after round eight and did not break into the top eight for the first time until round 18. But the fact that they recovered well enough to finish sixth and earn a home final was cold comfort for the coach in the wake of Saturday night's 25-point elimination final loss to Sydney. "I'm not very easily pleased, I'm really hard to work with," Lyon said. "I'm really demanding, I'm unrelenting. "You show me a coach who is unrelenting and I'll show you a player group who generally reflects that. "I'm far from satisfied. The previous effort is irrelevant.

organised. "For whatever reason, the message that doesn't normally get lost, did get lost. "I thought we were unrecognisable in the second quarter to be honest." After the match, grand final players Michael Gardiner, Steven Baker, Andrew McQualter and Robert Eddy all announced their retirement. However both Eddy and Baker revealed on Twitter they have not retired, insinuating St Kilda had made the decision to delist them. Although none of the quartet played in the loss to the Swans - and Eddy had already been relegated to the rookie list Lyon admitted it felt like a changing of the guard at the club. "There's a natural attrition, most clubs churn x number of players per year," he said. "Certainly it sort of feels like the end of an era to be honest. "To lose a home final at Etihad, against a good team, it was a really disappointing night. "There were some of the old warts there that came out.

AFL expansion side Greater Western Sydney (GWS) has finally landed their big target, confirming the signing of Melbourne midfielder Tom Scully to a sixyear deal.
The Giants, who will join the AFL next season as the 18th club, announced the deal at a media conference despite the Demons confirming the news via Twitter earlier in the morning. GWS tabled a huge offer for Scully - far more than the Demons could afford - and Scully admitted that was a significant factor. "I also saw an opportunity be part of a brand new football club with access to so much young talent," said Scully, who said the move north would take him out of his "comfort zone". Reports say his salary will be around $5 million over the six years. The 20-year-old said he had endured a tough year dealing with speculation about his future. Scully said he also found

Holmes said that was when he met Scully and his family for the first time, with the official contract signed on Monday morning. "I got a great sense of how agonising it has been for Tom this year," said Holmes. " ... we're delighted to have Tom at our club." The Giants have signed fellow uncontracted players Callan Ward (Western Bulldogs), Phil Davis (Adelaide) and Rhys Palmer (Fremantle) - but Scully's signature is the biggest boon. The Demons' hopes of keeping Scully slowly but surely shrivelled from March 3 when he first spoke to the media about the speculation. Melbourne endured a tough season, axing coach Dean Bailey after an embarrassing 186point loss to Geelong in July. Viney is caretaker coach with no long-term replacement announced. Scully has played 31 games in total but battled a knee injury this season that restricted him to 10 games. The Giants are likely to make him a co-captain.

"We had every opportunity and I'm hurting because we didn't deliver. "I don't like losing, I don't like losing finals, I don't like losing at home. "There's no satisfaction with me." Lyon was particularly unhappy with the skill errors from his team against Sydney, particularly in the second term and again early in the last when the margin had been cut to eight points. "Our best tonight would have been good enough," he said. "But we weren't hard enough when we needed to be, we weren't skillful enough when we needed to be and we weren't

Garry Lyon and a number of players," Scully said. "Obviously that was very tough because they've been fantastic for me over my two years there and I was very thankful at the opportunity they gave to me and they understood that it was an incredibly difficult decision." The 20-year-old midfielder had been the No.1 recruiting target for GWS. Scully and members of his family flew from Melbourne to meet with the club on Sunday. Australian all-rounder Shane Watson was the sole Australian included in an ICC one-day international team of the year dominated by World Cup winners India.
Watson scored 479 runs in 2011 at an average of 68.42, including a record-breaking 185 not out off 96 balls against Bangladesh, and 17 wickets at an average of 37.41. Watson, South African AB de Villiers and Indian skipper MS Dhoni were the only three players included from last year's unorthodox pace bowler Lasith Malinga, who squeaks in as Twelfth Man.

I think everyone saw in the ICC Cricket World Cup how exciting this format can be," said Lloyd, who captained West Indies to the 1975 and 1979 World Cup trophies but were surprisingly defeated by India in
