LTE Advanced Key Technology Messages

LTE Advanced is the evolution of LTE

Initial LTE launches are based on 3GPP Release 8LTE Advanced is the evolution of LTE defined in 3GPP R10, targeted for completion in standards by Q1 2011. LTE R8 provides the following benefits: LTE boosts data capacity in high demand areas o LTE will initially address data capacity in high demand areas where 3G provides ubiquitous coverage as well as voice support. o Multimode LTE/3G devices provide seamless handover with 3G from day one. LTE leverages new and wider spectrum, 10 MHz and beyond, and TDD spectrum o LTE is available in bandwidths below 10 MHz but offers limited performance differentiation compared to evolved 3G. o LTE and evolved 3G provide similar performance (spectral efficiency and peak data rates) when using the same bandwidth and same number of antennas (i.e., 2x2 MIMO). LTE Initial deployments will focus on data o LTE, with its low latency and low overhead, is designed to support the entire range of IP services including VoIP using IMS, but focus initially on data devices (dongles etc.) o Important mobility enhancementsforward handoverare planned for LTE R9. o Initial LTE handsets will rely on 3G (2G) for voice services Qualcomm provides industrys first LTE/3G multimode chipsets o Qualcomm is in a unique position to support the worlds 1st LTE multimode and LTE standards-compliant solution supporting all major 3G flavors and its evolution.

LTE Advanced leverages advanced topology network

The next significant performance leap will come from leveraging topology by adding many low power nodessuch as femtocells, picocells, and relaysbringing the network closer to the user. A network with a mix of macro cells and low powered nodes is also referred to as a heterogeneous network or HetNet. LTE Advanced further improves the performance, simply adding new nodes obviously increase the capacity, but LTE Advanced realize the full benefit of heterogeneous networksAdvanced Topology Networks providing the following benefits: Significantly higher network capacitybeyond the gain seen by adding a node with LTE R8 by better utilizing the low powered nodes and mitigate interference. Ensures user fairness both within and between nodes o Adding new nodes creates new cell edges and users at the new cell edges may get reduced performance without advanced interference management Improves cell edge user performance Extends range of nodes to better utilize of low power nodes (range extension) Enable the introduction of LTE femtocells o Femtocells sharing the same spectrum as the macro network with restricted access require advanced interference management The new relay node extends coverage and improves capacity without wire-line backhaul expense advanced interference management further improves capacity and coverage. Additional features such as SON (self-organizing networks) and minimization of drive tests will simplify deployment of networks with many additional low powered nodes.
Advanced interference management: The two main features are 1) intelligent node association which extends the range to improve coverage and capacity and 2) adaptive resource allocation which ensure fairness and improves performance by mitigating interference. In addition, LTE Advanced is also introduces additional interference management techniques such as coordinated beam forming. Multicarrier may also be used to enable adaptive resource allocation, in case time domain allocation is not possible

LTE Advanced leverages ultra wide spectrum

LTE Advanced can leverage ultra wide spectrum 20 MHz up to 100 MHz through the multicarrier feature to further enhance the broadband experience. Wider bandwidth is important to all wireless operators to continue to enhance the broadband experience since peak and user data rates scale with the bandwidth used. Multicarrier is also a key feature for EV-DO Rev. B and HSPA+ to enhance performance in 5 MHz to 20 MHz spectrum bands. Although most operators do not have access to 100 MHz of spectrum, LTE Advanced can provide 1 Gbps peak data rates when leveraging 4x4 MIMO (and using 80 MHz of spectrum) Operators will also leverage multicarrier to improve performance of advanced topology networks

LTE Advanced is the global 4G solutionthe leading IMT-Advanced Candidate

LTE Advanced is the leading candidate to meet ITUs IMT-Advanced requirement, the process that is defining 4G: 3G was defined by IMT-2000 and formal approval as an IMT-2000 technology is a requirement in many countries to get access to 3G defined spectrum. ITUs IMT-Advanced definition is the next step after IMT-2000. The candidates where accepted in October 2009 for evaluation during 2010, acceptance end of 2010 and standards completion by Q1 2011. LTE Advanced will meet or exceed the requirements set up by IMT-Advanced, e.g. peak and cell edge spectral efficiency, the ability leverage wider spectrum and high peak data rates.

Qualcomm: LTE Advanced Leadership

Qualcomms over-the-air prototype test bed in San Diego evaluates features to realize full benefits of advanced topology networks and to speed up the design of LTE Advanced. Qualcomm continues its LTE standardization leadership. A main contributor to key LTE Advanced features such as multicarrier, self-organizing network, relays, and waveform enhancements. Major contributor for ITU IMT-Advanced submissions and the first company to show results satisfying IMT-Advanced requirements
