Information for Intake Commencing 2012 Country Framework_____________________


In 2010, Australia announced an expanded aid program in Burma with a more broad-based development objective. Assistance increased to $48.6 million for 201011, up almost $20 million from $29.1 million in 200910. The increase recognises the immense development task faced by current and future generations of Burmese people. Australia's aid program targets health (especially for mothers and children), basic education, food security and sustainable livelihoods. The aid program also recognises the serious and sustained decline in the human capital of Burma by including efforts to build the capacity of people and institutions in priority areas. Australias assistance is delivered through United Nations agencies and Australian and international non-government organisations. exceptional applicants who can demonstrate ability to transfer their research skills, particularly in the areas of focus of Australias aid program, on return to Burma. Both Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) and Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships (ALAS) will be offered to Burmese applicants. Australian Leadership Award Scholarships will be available across all eligible countries on an annual basis, for high achievers wishing to undertake postgraduate study at an Australian higher education institution. Selection for an ALA Scholarship is highly competitive. Type, Level and Number of Scholarships____


Following a successful pilot in 2010-11, Australia will provide up to 15 scholarships to Burmese citizens to undertake postgraduate studies in Australia beginning in the 2012 academic year. Awards will predominately be at Masters level; PhDs may be available for

education, food security and livelihoods (agriculture). Cross cutting themes will also be considered including law, public policy, economics, development studies and international relations. A gender balance is a priority for the Australian Government. The scholarship program will strive for equal representation of males and females. In line with the Australian Government's strategy "Development for All: Towards a disability-inclusive Australian aid program 2009-2014", AusAID is committed to offering educational opportunities to people with disability.

Applications close on 31 May 2011. Language proficiency: Applicants must undertake one of the following English language proficiency tests and achieve the necessary results before the scholarship can be awarded: an IELTS Academic Test with an overall score of at least 6.5 and no band less than 6 (please note some Australian university courses may require higher results), or a TOEFL paper-based test score of at least 580, or a TOEFL computer-based test score of at least 237, or a TOEFL Internet-based score of at least 92.
