Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School Year 5W Class Bulletin

Sept 2011

Dear Parents / Carers, Welcome to Year 5! Its great to be back after my years sabbatical, especially with a class that I know well from teaching them in Year 1! It has been lovely to see how much progress they have made since then and I am looking forward to extending them even further this year. All of the classes from Years 1-6 will be learning through an Inspirational curriculum this year. This is more of a topic based approach to teaching the curriculum. Below are some details about what the children will be learning during Term 1. My PPA time will be on a Tuesday afternoon, in which time Mrs Hoare will be teaching the class Science, and on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning until 9.30, when Miss Harrison will be taking Guided reading. If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please come in and speak to me in the playground before school. You can also email me on; nwehbe@immanuelschoollambeth.org.uk Miss Natasha Wehbe

Important Notes
Homework

Written homework will be set each Thursday by the Literacy teacher and is due back the following Monday. Maths homework will be set each Thursday by the Maths group teacher and is due back the following Monday. The children will be using Homework diaries. Please check their homework and sign the diaries when it is completed. Spellings will be given out every Monday and the children will be tested on a Friday. They will need to bring in their blue spelling book on both days. Reading Books Children will have the opportunity to choose a book from the school library. The timetable is being devised and children will be notified of their slot in due course. They will also receive a new book from the school reading scheme on a Friday. It is very important that children bring their books and book bags to school on a daily basis. Could I also encourage you to listen to your child read and question them about the text at home? It is vital that all children complete their homework on a weekly basis. If children are unable to, please write me a note in the homework diary. Similarly, if there is something small that you need to inform me of, such as lost uniform, please also write this in the diary. It is your childs responsibility to show me their diary as I will not be collecting them in on a weekly basis. I will always initial your note once I have read it. Thank you for your support with homework.

Literacy
We will be comparing stories by significant childrens authors. We will be looking specifically at WW2 authors to link with our topic. The class novel will be Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. Children will be able to map and compare story structures and openings. They will explore aspects of the author's style, for example themes, settings, typical characters. The children will look at different ways of presenting characters, for example using dialogue, action, description, and discuss responses. Children will develop particular aspects of written narrative: they will experiment with story openings; write new scenes or characters into a familiar story in the style of the author; and be able to organise scenes using paragraphs effectively. We will then compare the novel to the film in our unit Film Narrative. The children will explore themes and technical aspects of film making. There will be lots of Drama games involved and the children will create a storyboard have a go at creating their own films. Each child will have a copy of the novel to borrow. It is vital that they look after the book and return it at the end of the unit in good condition. If a book is not returned there will be a fee of 5. It would be helpful if parents discuss the novel with their child. I am aware that children may find the text difficult to begin with so I would encourage adults to read to their child, or take it in turns to read sections.
