Learner Response Systems

Promethean's Learner Response Systems are creating a revolution in education through devices offering unprecedented opportunities for student involvement AND assessment. Each learner response device gives individual students a voice while equipping teachers with a revolutionary tool for delivering dynamic lessons tailored to the immediate assessment of student performance. Classroom participation is a huge (and sometimes complicated) part of the learning experience. It takes courage to speak up, and nearly psychic abilities to know who understands the lesson. ActiVote offers teachers and students a clearer answera friendly Learner Response System that makes sure every voice counts. With AF voting capability, a fun to hold shape and intuitive buttons, ActiVote makes 100% class participation fast, fun and easy. Students build confidence with every vote and can track their progress through both instant feedback and scores tallied over time. Teachers find that spontaneity enters the classroom with ActiVotepolling can be performed on the fly, debate can be started at the drop of a hat, and assessment guesswork ends.

Students have amazing things on their minds, and very little of it fits the standard multiple choice format. ActivExpression turns question and answer into query, communicate and check comprehension. Full textcapability enables students to respond in full sentences as well as in numbers, symbols, math equations, true/false, Likert scales and more. Self-Paced Learning allows teachers to assign full quizzes of varying difficulty and gives students the opportunity to register answers at their own pace. Teachers can alter the assignments length of time to challenge learners.

Self-Paced Learning
Self-Paced Learning Self-Paced Learning delivers real-time, immediate response details for every student, question by question, enabling teachers to identify individual needs and address them. Unlike Prepared Questions, Self-Paced Question Sets are not displayed on the board during a voting session. At the start of a session, the first question is sent to each voting device. As soon as a learner sends a response, this is recorded and displayed, and the next question is automatically sent to their device. Each learner progresses at their own pace. With Self-Paced Learning you can do the following: Choose how many questions to include in a question set. Group questions in sets of up to 9 levels of difficulty. Choose how many questions each learner must answer correctly before they can progress to the next level. Shuffle the questions to change their order. Randomize the questions, so that each learner receives all questions in a different order from their neighbors. See each response as soon as it has been sent.

Benefits of Self-Paced Learning Self-Paced Learning provides a structured framework for flexible learning and assessment. They help to focus the attention of the whole group, because everyone participates and every vote counts. Realtime Assessment - assessment data monitoring in real-time giving teachers live feedback on actual student progress. Adaptive Teaching and Learning - teachers can instantly see student answers so they can adapt their teaching and learning accordingly. Intervention - gives teachers the option to intervene immediately with students who are struggling, or give encouragement. Differentiation - allows teachers to set differentiated questions for students by applying different success parameters. 22

Running a Self-Paced Question Set To start the voting session, simply click on the green Start/Stop Flipchart Vote button on your main toolbar. As soon as the voting session starts, the first question is sent to all ActivExpression devices. Students will answer the questions as they appear on their devices, based on the settings that were selected during set up. If the questions have been randomized, students receive them in a different order from their neighbors. Once the Start/Stop Flipchart Vote button is pressed, the Self-Paced Assessment Results window opens. As students respond to the questions on their device, the results are automatically recorded in the Self Paced Assessments Results window.

Do not close the Self-Paced Assessment Results window unless you want to abort the voting session. At any time during a voting session you can do the following:

Pause a vote. Abort a vote. Change the view in the Self-Paced Assessment Results window. Paste the current results into the flipchart Display more detailed information about a particular learner or question. The Pause and Abort buttons in the Self-Paced Assessment Results window are deactivated.

Reviewing and Exporting Results

Upon completion of assessing your class via learner response devices, make sure that you save your flipchart. (You may want to rename your flipchart so that you still have a copy of the original.) You may view the results for immediate assessment, to recognize learning gaps, determine how your lesson may be modified, and distinguish students that may need specific interventions. To view your results: 1. Open the Voting Browser. 2. Click on the + sign next to Results Browser found towards the bottom of the window. 3. A list of all votes will appear. Notice that each vote is labeled with a date and time stamp, in addition to the page number. For prepared questions, you will notice that the question will also be listed. 4. Select the vote that you want to view. Click on the menu icon to the right to View Results, View Page, or Delete Results from Flipchart.

To Export Results to Excel, click on the Export button. You will be prompted to name your Excel file. Your Excel file should open up automatically displaying the data for your entire voting session.

Best Practices for Using Learner Response Systems

Usage Embed Pre and Post-tests within your lesson. Integrate LRS periodically throughout your lesson. If appropriate, use LRS to pose a discussion for your students on some aspect of the flipchart. Question Format Keep questions (and answers) short. Limit answer options to no more than 5 choices. Incorporate at least two higher order thinking questions (Blooms Taxonomy) Use at least two different question styles/formats. Results Discuss results from voting sessions on at least two assessment questions. If appropriate, ask follow-on questions. Be ready to adapt flipchart lesson if students do not respond with your desired responses. Reminder: Do not overuse LRS. Overuse leads to monotony and loss of student interest in providing accurate responses based on what they really think or know.
