Adult & Community Enrichment Course
Computing I (Windows 7)
Adult & Community Enrichment Course This class is designed specifically for seniors. Each student is provided with a state-of-the-art laptop computer during the class. Lessons are also projected onto an oversized screen at the front of the classroom. After completing this course, students' fear and confusion about their computer disappears. The class focuses on having fun while learning to send and receive email, navigate around the computer and create files. Solid, basic computer skills are your main take-away from this class. Attendance will be limited to six (6) students from Glenridge. Students will be enrolled in the order in which registrations are received. Computers will be provided but students may bring their own laptops. Laptops brought to class by students may not have access to the Internet. This class is based on the Windows 7 operating system; it is NOT oriented toward MAC computers. Instruction is individualized according to the knowledge and needs of each student. Students are free to work in a studio setting. The creation of paintings is explored through approaches to still life, figure and landscape. Instructor provides list of supplies which most students have. 1. Develop the painting skills, techniques and aesthetic sensibilities related to artistic expression in painting media of choice - emphasis on color, value and composition. 2. Develop the ability to evaluate and analyze your own work as well as the work of other students in the class.

Her work is exhibited in galleries and art shows throughout Florida and is in private collections internationally. Marilyn has taught art courses and workshops in her studio/gallery and in art center settings around Florida. She is presently Vice President of Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society.

Adult & Community Enrichment Course This class is for students who have taken Introduction to Computing I or those who have good basic computing skills. Learn safe methods to browse the web, create well-formed word processing documents and how to manage files and folders. Use CD's, pen drives, digital cameras and the Internet during this class. Attendance is limited to Six (6) students from Glenridge. Students will be enrolled in the order in which registrations are received. Computers will be provided but students may bring their own laptop. Laptops brought to class by students may not have access to the Internet. Dramatic Expressions II This class is designed for those who have had basic dramatic instruction and wish further studies in character development through the use of improvisational exercises and advanced script analysis. Emphasis will be on refining techniques for the stage and camera. Learn the basics of "method acting" through the use of comedic material. If you are already a good thespian, this course will take you to a higher level.

Dramatic Expressions I & II
Adult & Community Enrichment Course Dramatic Expressions I This is a beginners class for those who desire to study the basic rudiments of dramatic acting. The course includes improvisational theater games, scene study and character development. Discover the performer inside of you. Unleash your creativity in a fun, unintimidating atmosphere as well as interacting with your friends in the world of make believe.

She was born in Poland, lived and studied in many different parts of the world - including Great Britain and Italy - before coming to the USA. Her entire adult life has been dedicated to studying, reading, writing and teaching literature. She is a literary critic and a college level lecturer with a deep passion for philosophy, arts and cinematography.
Bob Clementis is a respected former foreign policy analyst with NATO and the U. S. Military. He was an instructor for the Department of Defense and an instructor on location in the newly joined former Warsaw Pact states. He holds an MA in International Relations/History.
History of China

How Novel
Adult & Community Enrichment Course Have you ever wanted to discuss a book you have read and hear others ideas, or ponder with friends over questions from an important novel? This is the class for you. There will be thoughtprovoking and lively conversations on a range of issues arising from the novels which will be read for the class meetings. One novel will be read every two weeks. Individual thoughts and viewpoints will help make this class an enhancing, stimulating and friendly experience. Read timely and engaging works by current authors and analyze the books characters, local culture, conflicts, authors writing style and the big picture for take-away messages. Gain insight into and appreciation for these writings and remember why literature is read in the first place. The books to be read during this course are: 10/12: The Calligraphers Daughter by E. Professor Kenneth J. Hammond is Associate Professor of History and Head of the History Department at New Mexico State University. He earned his A.M. in East Asian Regional Studies and Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University. Past President of the Society for Ming Studies, Dr. Hammond has won several grants and fellowships. He has published many articles and translations and is editor of The Human Tradition in Premodern China.
Alice Blueglass was a teacher and principal for 16 years at an elementary school in suburban New York that won 2 awards. She has taught professional educators about effective teaching methods and ways to build a learning community. Alice has a BA from Brooklyn College and a Masters & Advanced Study in Ed. Leadership from State University of NY at New Paltz. She is involved with the mentor-student program of the Sarasota School District.

Glenridge Course
Join the fun in learning how to make a votive candle holder, holiday ornament, sun-catcher or night light. You will learn the techniques of cutting glass, wrapping it with lead came or copper foil and soldering it together. Registration is limited to Eight (8) students. Students should bring flat nose and needle nose pliers and a pair of garden gloves if they have them. Understanding Opera

Understanding Opera

Dr. Robert Greenberg is Music Historian-inResidence with San Francisco Performances. A graduate of Princeton University, Professor Greenberg holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley. He has seen his compostions - which include more than 45 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles - performed all over the world, including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, LA, England, Ireland, Greece, Italy and the Netherlands. Dr. Greenberg has served on the faculties of the University of California, Berkeley; CSU, Hayward; and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has lectured for some of the most prestigious musical and arts organizations in the U.S.A., including the San Francisco Symphony, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Van Cliburn Foundation and the Chicago Symphony. For Great Courses he has recorded more than 500 lectures on a range of composers and classical music genres.
Understanding Jazz
Adult & Community Enrichment Course ***New Class and Instructor*** What is it that defines jazz from other genre of music? How do musicians all simultaneously improvise yet play together? What happens to the melody in jazz? How can one hear whats important in a jazz performance? What are the differences between all the various sub-genre of jazz? How does it relate to blues and rock? All you ever wanted to know and more will be explored through listening to the recordings of the jazz masters from early 20th century to the present day. This series of lectures will discuss some of the major works of the 17th, 18th and 19th centruy housed in the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Beginning with Renaissance masters and concluding with 20th century artists. This course of 8 sessions will examine the qualities that make a great portrait painter. A great portrait tells you as much about the painter as the sitter. Portraits above and beyond likeness, tell the viewer about the social norms, politics and intrigues at the time of its creation. These lectures will examine the dynamics of the viewer to that which is viewed. Artistss are Rembrandt, Ingres, Goya, Gainsborough, Cezanne, Picasso, Modigliani and Bacon. He is an artist, writer, critic, lecturer, former State School Program Manager at the Ringling Museum of Art, and a member of the City of Sarasota Public Art Committee.
Marty Adams began his association with jazz while in high school, playing tenor saxophone, singing and spending weekends in New York Citys jazz clubs listening to the modern jazz greats of the 1950s and 60s. During a career as a marketing executive he continued to visit jazz venues around the world. On retiring in 1998 he devoted himself to researching music history and theory and teaching various jazz courses for musicians and non-musicians in various educational institutions in New York State and Florida. Marty is a graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in psychology and has taught college level marketing courses.
