Tikkun Leil Shavuot
The mystics of the Middle Ages started a tradition of late night study sessions (tikkunim) to mark the night of certain festivals. The next on the calendar is Tikkun Leil Shavuot, which will be held at Congregation Sinai on Tuesday night, June 7th, at 9:00 pm. The festival of Shavuot celebrates Matan Torah, the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai. Tikkun Leil Shavuot often focus on the topic of revelation as experienced by our ancestors at that moment. This year, we will look at a series of poems relating to revelation at Sinai. Some of the poems will be from antiquity, others from modernity, or a feminist or Israeli perspective. Join us for a look at some fascinating writing!

Faith in an Age of Doubt
From time to time, I am asked the question: Do you have to believe in God to be a good Jew? My answer is: yes and no. Lets begin with the no. For Jews, faith is not the litmus test for entry to the synagogue or the community, let alone to the hereafter. Redemption hinges not on belief in a personal savior but on our behavior, the way we treat those around us. Ultimately, you dont have to believe in God to be a good Jew, but you do have to act as if you believe in God, behaving in accord with the Torahs moral teachings. And yet, Judaism doesnt think faith is unimportant. Judaism has always recognized and encouraged a relationship with God, even as it recognizes our right to question Gods nature and justice. As a Jew, one can be an agnostic but not an atheist. We are commanded to wrestle with the God question, not deny it. Even so, perfect faith is not our goal. In this way, Judaism acknowledges a key paradox: the presence of doubt is precisely what causes faith to flourish. Let me say that again: in Judaisms view, faith is contingent on doubt. In recent centuries, weve lived in an age of certainty. Science defined truth as that which is observable, verifiable and replicable. Faith was a belief in those things that couldnt be observed, verified, or replicated. Today, as the structures that defined certainty are collapsing, faith is regaining its centrality and purpose. This isnt a new realization. Even the events of the Bible make clear that certainty never leads to faith. When the Israelites experienced miracle upon miracle during the Exodus, they emerged as despairing and unbelieving as they were before. At the very moment the sea split, Midrash tells us some questioned whether similar tunnels through the water had opened elsewhere, and were the Egyptians, at that very moment, crossing to attack them on the other side? Indeed, if the certainty of miracles personally experienced didnt produce faith, why would we expect the certainty of science to do any better? In fact, those making a career in scientific research often find their faith growing over the years; fully aware how much is still unknowable, from the inner recesses of the human body to the origins of the universe, they are humbled. Whats more, in areas that science has shed a light of understanding, scientists are left with a more impenetrable question: we may have learned how a part of the world functions but we are still left wondering, why. Science can address the mechanics of things but not the question of meaning. In addition to its inability to address questions of meaning, a quest for certainty carries with it profound risks. During the enlightenment, European Jews asked, "What do we need to do to Judaism to submit it to European discourse in order to make it palatable in the open marketplace? How can we resolve faith and reason? Ultimately, this strategy was flawed. It assumed that others would be convinced by objective truth and that we share a set of standards against which that truth might be evaluated. Instead, it led to competition to convince others that ones truth was correct and, ultimately, to religious violence. Truth was severed from religion and both were sundered from certainty. The result was twentieth century violence and destruction. Today, we live in what some call the post-modern world; now the entire world is in doubt, open to questions. We understand that a quest for certainty cannot satisfy our spiritual needs. Rav Soloveitchik, Bostons venerated orthodox leader of the mid twentieth century, suggested that the yearning to know more doesnt always help us be more. He describes watching the night sky in the desert. We can respond in two ways, he offers: we can see the sky and want to explore or we can see the sky and simply marvel. At times, sciences ability to demystify the world can, as through medicine, save lives. At other times, it prevents us from standing in awe. Remember: doubt is no enemy of faith. A faith that lives comfortably with doubt, that can forgo certainty and embrace a degree of mystery, is one that will be more appealing for all who seek religious meaning in their lives in today's Jewish world. Here is a prayer from Mishkan Tefila that reflects the age of doubt in which we live: AS YOU TAUGHT TORAH to those whose names I bear, teach me Torah, too. Its mystery beckons, yet I struggle with its truth. You meant Torah for me: did You mean the struggle for me, too? Don't let me struggle alone; help me to understand, to be wise, to listen, to know ... Lead me into the mystery. Mishkan Tefila, Page 151 -Rabbi David B. Cohen

Shabbat in Summer
Though there is snow and ice falling from the sky as I write this, this issue of the Sinai News has me thinking about summer. Warm days and gentle evening breezes are soon in the future. With long lines at Kopp's, picnics at the lake, bike weather and summer camp imminent, I can't help but get excited for the season ahead! Summertime arriving soon also means Summer Shabbat at Sinai, and that is most certainly something to look forward to. Summer services are an amazing experience - a comfortable and casual atmosphere, reunions with our 'snowbirds,' our beautiful outdoor worship space, and the special delight of children swinging on willow trees during the oneg. Sunglasses are a normal part of Shabbat attire in the summer, and popsicles often make an appearance at the oneg. And of course, what could be a greater celebration of God's rest from creation, than sitting and celebrating Shabbat surrounded by community and nature? In general, summertime is the perfect time to reconnect ourselves to the weekly cycle of Jewish life. Late sunsets and relaxed work schedules make the perfect opportunity for Shabbat dinners with friends on outdoor furniture, or long, lingering Shabbat picnics with family on Saturday afternoon. Southeast Wisconsin builds in natural Shabbat activities like long bike rides or hikes through the Kettle-Moraine. Warm temperatures means the entire car gets filled with the yummy scent of challah on the way home, and Shabbat dessert is filled with the delicious flavors of summer fruits. As summer approaches, perhaps it is worthwhile to take a moment and consider how to make Shabbat a regular part of our schedule. I hope to see you at Sinai this summer, celebrating Shabbat and celebrating what will surely be a beautiful summer. -Cantor Rebecca Robins

Reflections
Some years ago, our congregation sponsored a lecture series, featuring outstanding personalities on the American scene. One of our speakers was a publisher in the South of a Jewish periodical with wide distribution. The sentiments expressed in his publication, paralleling my own, were somewhat left of center. He spoke well; his presence on stage was genial and personable. In our personal interactions, I found this individual to be insufferable; he was irritating and demanding. On the opposite side of the political spectrum was the free-market exponent, Milton Friedman, distinguished professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. I had difficulty with his point of view, but found him a warm and charming individual. I thoroughly enjoyed our hamish lunch at Jakes Deli on North Avenue. My conclusion, after contact with all speakers, was that there was small correlation between character and political orientation. In an ancient dispute between rabbis of a more or less traditional perspective, the debate was interrupted by a voice from heaven, proclaiming both views represent the words of the living God. The voice was addressing, not the political views, but the character of the participants. The goal of the religious life, and key to the well being of the community, is the possession of the twin virtues, wisdom and morality. The compromise necessitated by the conflicting views of leaders, possessing these values, will provide a beacon of light to the community they serve. -Rabbi Jay R. Brickman

From the President

With May comes Sinais Annual Meeting and with it a sense of renewal and hope for the future. You know I like to think positive thoughts about our synagogue and the ways each of us has been touched by Sinai. Each of our spiritual journeys brings us to new awakenings. Back in the day, my mother and her contemporaries dressed up for Shabbat and prepared for services by matching clothing, shoes and handbags. Nowadays, our vocabulary includes words like collaboration and partnership, and spiritual journey. I am excited to be sharing the next year of leadership with Marc Kartman, our nominated copresident. Marcs leadership skills and his vast congregational experience have benefited the board in the past and will do so even more in the future. I am mindful that our future is secured through the generosity of our members. This summer we will again host a series of community fundraising dinner parties! Last summer, the dinner parties were a fun chance to get together and do a mitzvah for Sinai. Please come and participate. If youre able to host or just want to attend, call Jen Friedman. After a long Wisconsin winter, we anxiously await those Friday outdoor Kabbalat Shabbat services, out on the patio, under the warm setting sun, feeling a sense of community with those around us. There is incredible comfort in the beauty of the liturgy and the inspiration from Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Robins. Come join us for services. Library Reading Nook Dedication
Friday evening, May 27th, at the conclusion of Kabbalat Shabbat services, we will dedicate a reading corner in the library to Judee Ross zl, who died tragically in July, 2005. Judee was a supportive friend, a dedicated mother, a gifted teacher, an animated storyteller, and a mentsch of the highest order. At Sinai, her presence lent depth to our educational programming. At the Milwaukee Jewish Day School, her students were inspired by Judees commitment to them and her passion for literature. Judee particularly enjoyed teaching the classics of childrens literature. In her honor and memory, Rick Ross and his family endowed a dedicated space in the new library for story telling. On the eastern side of the room, there are a series of shallow stairs leading up to a reading nook. On Sunday mornings, our librarians, Beth Kaplan and Jayne Butlein, read Jewish stories to our youngest religious school students. A new bookshelf, custom built by Sinais master woodworker, Jim Salinsky, will house the collection, which will be available for Hebrew teachers, parents and students. The collection features the works of Dr. Seuss, and other classics such as Pinocchio, Tarzan, Winnie the Pooh, and others. They are written in elementary Hebrew, much as the original English versions, which is suitable for students. We hope youll join us celebrate Judees memory on May 27th. In addition, take time to explore the reading nook.

Sinai Fun Raising Parties!

Sinai congregants will be hosting a series of parties beginning in June in an effort to support Sinai.
These parties were tremendously successful last summer. In addition to raising funds for Sinai, these gatherings were social and provided opportunities to meet other Sinai congregants. Parties included a Chocolate BBQ, a Klezmer Cocktail Party, a Mexican Fiesta, a Luau, a Lake House Lunch, and a Biking Brunch! Exciting themed parties are already in the works! Softball season is about to begin and we need new team members!

Games are held each Tuesday night at either 6 PM or 7 PM from May through early August. This is a part of the JCC softball league and last year 14 teams from different Jewish organizations participated. There is a $20 team membership fee in addition to being a member of the Brotherhood. Social Action Volunteer Opportunities
1. Literacy Services of Wisconsin In February, India McCanse, Director of Literacy Services of Wisconsin (LSW) spoke to our congregation. With illiteracy affecting over 20% of the population in parts of Milwaukee, YOU can really make a difference. LSW offers three distinct programs: adult basic education (reading and spelling), English as a Second Language and G.E.D. preparation. Go to the website at www.literacyservices.org to find out how you can be trained and volunteer. 2. Glean Machine Every year around the time of Shavuot, Tikkun Ha-Ir collects new and gently used clothing, toys, books, games, household items, toiletries, bed linens and towels to replenish the stocks of community organizations, shelters and agencies. This year the collections will be between June 12th16th. Congregation Sinai will be the drop off site Sunday, June 12th. Volunteers are needed to deliver items to the Glean Machine collection site, staff the Glean Machine drop-off in our synagogue parking lot, and help sort the items at the end of the week. There will be a training on May 25. Please call Idy Goodman at (414) 351-3386if you are interested in and able to do any of the above tasks. 3. Congregation Sinai Social Action Day. Whats Greening at Sinai

It is forbidden to live in a town that does not have a green garden. (Jerusalem Talmud, Kiddushim 4:12)
So we will plant, AGAIN. This month we launch the 3rd annual Sinai Sukkah Garden!! We are excited to uncover our Magen David shaped and rectangular raised beds, throw off the winter chill, and plant. The garden has been a tremendous success the last two years and we have no doubt that it will be even better this year! But we need YOUR HELP! Planting day this year will again be on the final day of Religious School, which is Sunday, May 15th @ 12:15 p.m. Come join in the fun as we prep the beds, plant seeds and set the tending schedule for the summer. We will need folks to sign up for watering or weeding or both throughout the growing season. Sign up for the week of your choice by contacting Naomi Cobb at coyote.naomi@gmail.com or coming out on May 15th to the planting day. Those who help can nibble the harvest! In other Greening news, we have received a wonderful response to the Sinai CSA project. There still may be a share or two left if you havent already signed up. These will fall under a new general policy statement for the synagogue that reflects our communitys commitment to environmental consciousness in keeping with Tikkun Olam. Israel Committee
One cold Sunday in February Feb. 27 Sinai held Yom Yisrael (Israel Day), which warmed my heart, and the hearts of many religious school kids. They learned something about Israel, and what it means to live there. Paz Goldschmidt (Israeli emissary at MJF, and a Sinai member) and Cantor Robins planned all the activities. Almost 100 kids of different ages (K-6) participated. The activities were dedicated to what is familiar to every Israeli: cutting Israeli salad, doing puzzles, playing trivia, and making arts and crafts. The most engaging activity was a make believe IDF (Israeli Defense Force) recruiting process a simulation of what takes place in the life of every 16 year old Israeli before entering the army. Paz took the children on a tour and played games on a floor map of Israel. They learned about Naharia (where our sister congregation, Emet veShalom is located) and other places in Israel. They saw how tiny Israel is, and what countries Israel borders. They solved quiz questions, highlighting Israeli history, geography, its accomplishments, and inventions. They shared their own experiences visiting Israel, or planning to do so with other kids. At the end of the day the art room was filled with pretty paper hamsas made by each student, and every kid got a snack of Israeli candy, creating a sensation of warmth and special sweetness, so fitting for Yom Yisrael. Mossad is the Israeli agency responsible for overseas covert intelligence work.
Mishka was a community Shaliach in Milwaukee during the years 1977-1980. In 1980 he and his wife Shoshana returned to Jerusalem were Mishka earned his Ph.D. in literature (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) Soon after, he published his first three books. In 1987 he joined the Mossad, and in a relatively short time rose to a top level position. In the year 2000 he retired from the Mossad and went back to full-time writing. Since then he has written about 10 novels and collections of short stories with various themes: psychological, war, politics, and suspense. His books have been very well received, and popular in Israel. From 2005-2007, Mishka was the principal for The Israel Arts and Science Academy, a high-school for gifted children in Jerusalem. During the last several years he has participated in many radio and TV shows in Israel to discuss various aspect of the IsraeliPalestinian-Arab conflict. Bnei Mitzvah Bios
Jordan Zall
Jordan Zall became a Bar Mitzvah on April 4, 2011 in Jerusalem, Israel. Jordan is the son of Diane and Eric Zall, the brother of Emily, Molly, and Lily, grandson of Fran and Ronald Meyers and Barbara and Gerald Zall. Jordan enjoys many sports and hobbies including soccer, hockey, baseball, skateboarding, wakeboarding, snow and water skiing and camp. He also enjoys activities with family such as hiking, biking, camping and just being together. On his recent trip to Israel, Jordan and his family planted trees for Jordans mitzvah project. The trees represented his roots in Israel and were planted in memory of friends and family lovingly remembered. Jordan and his parents would like to deeply thank Rabbi David Cohen and Cantor Rebecca Robins for helping him and his family prepare for this spiritual experience. Jordan and his family would also like to thank Rabbi Nir Barkin for officiating in Israel.

Mikey Carruth
Mikey Carruth of Bayside will celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah on May 7, 2011 at Congregation Sinai. He is the son of Nancy and Joseph Carruth and is a 7th grader at Bayside Middle School. Mikey loves baseball, soccer, skiing, and spending time with family and friends. In commemoration of his Bar Mitzvah, Mikey is helping out at local food kitchens and donating funds to the Miracle League of Milwaukee, an organization dedicated to providing a baseball experience to the physically and mentally disabled. Mikey is very proud to become a Bar Mitzvah and looks forward to doing more for his Jewish Community. Mikey and his family wish to thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins, and Linda Ross for their generous guidance and support in getting Mikey ready for his big day.

Jordan Pereles Strouse

Jordan Strouse will become a Bar Mitzvah on May 14, 2011. Jordan is the son of Jean Pereles-Strouse and Martin Strouse and brother of Aaron, grandson of Ann Pereles and the late Robert Pereles. Jordan is a 7 th grader at Glen Hills Middle School. He enjoys several sports including baseball, basketball, volleyball and tennis. He also enjoys traveling and spending time with his friends and family. Jordans Torah portion, Bhar discusses taking care of the earth and community. His mitzvah project supports the idea of taking care of the world. Jordans idea was to provide a backpack filled with supplies to a 4 th grade class at Brian Piccolo School for the start of the 2011 school year. This school is in the inner city of Chicago. To raise money to buy these supplies, Jordan held a carwash on Labor Day Weekend at Speedway. A lot of his friends and family were there to help out and wash cars. Jordan is very excited about his Bar Mitzvah and the religious significance. He and his family thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Marilyn Kraar for their assistance and guidance preparing him for this special day.

Benjamin Eliot Spector

Benjamin Eliot Spector celebrates becoming a Bar Mitzvah on May 21, 2011. Ben is the son of Tracey and David Spector, brother of Emily, and grandson of Phyllis and the late Sidney Spector, Robert and Annie Bermel and Fredrick Kohloff. Ben is a 7th grader at Glen Hills Middle School. His interests include baseball, swimming, golf, volleyball and basketball. He also enjoys spending time with this friends and family. For his Mitzvah project, Ben is collecting worn, athletic shoes. The Reuse-a-Shoe program recycles the rubber soles and the recycled materials are then used as part of athletic surfaces, such as a court, track, field or playground. Ben is very excited about his Bar Mitzvah and its religious significance. He and his family thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins, Linda Ross and the Sinai office for the support and guidance.

Michael Dolan Higgins

Michael Dolan Higgins will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 11, 2011. Michael is the son of Susan Higgins-Larkey and the late John Higgins, and the stepson of the late Hirsh Larkey. Michaels grandparents are Jay Larkey, Lois Malawsky and Richard Nellen. Michael is finishing the 7th grade at Shorewood Intermediate School. He enjoys playing the guitar with the Shorewood Intermediate School Jazz Ensemble, as well as playing soccer. Michael is an active Boy Scout, and he will be starting work on his Eagle project in the near future. Michael and his family would like to offer special thanks to Cantor Rebecca Robins and Rabbi David Cohen for their kind and generous support in helping Michael prepare for this special day.

Sara Nocton
Sara Nocton will celebrate becoming a Bat Mitzvah on June 18, 2011. She is the daughter of Ellen Danto-Nocton and Jay Nocton, and the sister of Jeffrey Nocton. Sara is a 7th grade student at Bayside Middle School. She loves playing the flute and is part of the middle school band. Sara enjoys spending hours on her computer, texting friends and listening to music. She has always loved to read and will be collecting books to donate to needy children for her mitzvah project. Sara and her family would like to thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Linda Ross for all of their help and support in preparing for this momentous occasion.

Camille Davre
Camille Davre will become a Bat Mitzvah on June 25th. She is excited to celebrate this day with family and friends from here, France, and across the country. Cami is the daughter of Angela and Jerome, sister of Benjamin, granddaughter of Barry Zuckerman, Carol and Michael Tarnoff, Monique and Roger Davre, and great-granddaughter of Roddy Samuels. Cami's Torah portion is Korach from the book of Numbers. Camille is a 6th grader at Whitefish Bay Middle School. Although Cami enjoys school, her favorite subject is Physical Education. She also loves playing soccer and running. She is a talented singer and will be sharing her voice at several nursing homes for her Mitzvah project. While Cami is anxious about her Bat Mitzvah as it quickly approaches, she is also very excited to have her family and friends share this special occasion with her. She and her family appreciate all the efforts by the Sinai community, especially the help she has received from Rabbi David Cohen, Cantor Rebecca Robins, and Linda Ross. Their support and guidance have been invaluable in reaching this special milestone in life.

August Wettstein
Gus Wettstein will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 20, 2011. Gus is the son of Carrie and John Wettstein, and the brother of Lily Wettstein. Gus will be an 8th grader at Shorewood Intermediate School in the fall. He is an avid snowboarder, skateboarder, runner, and a Packers fan. Working with Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Linda Ross make this important experience even more special. Gus and his family extend their gratitude to these dedicated and talented leaders of the B'nei Mitzvah program for their guidance and support.

Ari Schermer
Ari Schermer will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 27, 2011. He is the son of Brian and Deborah and younger brother of Jacob. This summer, Ari will have completed seventh grade at Shorewood Intermediate School. He is a competitive gymnast and plays the violin. In addition, Ari enjoys skateboarding, skiing and hiking. He loves the outdoors and is concerned about environmental issues of today, such as effects of pesticides in our food. For his Torah portion, Ari will be reading a section that lists the dietary laws we follow for kashrut. To connect this topic of food with his interest in Tikkun Olam, his mitzvah project is to volunteer at Growing Power, an urban Community Food Center in Milwaukee that grows organic vegetables, herbs, fish, poultry, even bees, for the purpose of making healthy food choices available to people in all communities. Ari is looking forward to becoming a Bar Mitzvah and sharing his special day with family and friends. He and his parents thank Cantor Robins, Rabbi Cohen and Linda Ross for their guidance and assistance in helping him prepare for this day.

Bubbes Top Ten Reasons to Check out Sinai in the Summer 10. Because who can take the shvitzing heat in Florida. Welcome back all you snowbirds! 9. Everyone should come and see the beautiful Sukkah Garden it will remind you to decorate the Sukkah a mitzvah of course! 8. Those fabulous fun raising parties every member of Sinai should attend! It takes all of us to sustain our future Grandpa Moshe did it for me now its our turn. 7. Letters from Bubbe and Zayde to our kinderlach away at camp are nice but letters from the Rabbi and Cantor what could be better! 6. Bring the mishpacha and celebrate Americas Birthday! Friday, July 1st a little nosh, some games, and of course well pray to thank God for our country and our freedom! 5. That Sinai Brotherhood so young, handsome and athletic God forbid they should be hurt at any of those Sinai softball games. You should see them play so exciting! And then you should come and hear the Sermon on the Mound at Softball Shabbat on August 19th so inspirational...and hilarious! 4. Have you ever come Saturday morning for a little Torah? Well you should! Then enjoy a Shabbat walk with others. Believe me, exercise (of the mind and body) is a must! 3. Wine and cheese, Friday, August 5th is there anything else? Yes Shabbat Services! 2. Oh that Rabbi strumming his guitar and the Cantors voice soaring in the great outdoors its heavenly I tell you! I know because my Morrie can hear them! 1. Once again Sinai Brotherhood will bring the "joys and the tears of Mudville" home to Congregation Sinai as we share worship, ballpark style food, and of course the "Sermon from the Mound"! If you have never experienced the pure joy of this event you must mark it down as a MUST do for your summer worship schedule! Cantor Robins will lead us in a resounding chorus of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", the "National Anthem", and of course some heartfelt homage to our dedicated Sinai softball team! Rabbi Cohen will throw out the celebratory "first pitch" (in this case a verbal pitch) on Friday, August 19th at 6pm. Join us! BBQ to follow!
