I have been taking English classes with the Barnes English Institution for three months. Hence, I had taken a
lot of classes in the past: almost two years in my native country. However, experience in Barnes English is
great. I have learned key fundamentals in my pronunciation. The most important thing is the practice of
English language which is the main objective during the class. Having personal classes, face to face, is an
excellent opportunity to improve and to have stable confidence.
Thanks, Jorge
Had you ever instantly know that you'd be totally fascinated by something you were reading. I’m saying,
maybe as you continued to read it, and notice the form of the letters, the shadow of the ink, and the white of
the page, it permitted you to GO INSIDE, and remember a time when learning was easier and more fun.
1. Learn Pronunciation from a native speaker. Your country has specific sounds and so does English.
Learn the equivalents in your language e.g. tch in Portuguese is ch in English.
Learn the new sounds aswell. Germans say V for V and W. Push your lips out and say Water.
2. Learn all the words which are similar to your Language. This technique was originally suggested by
Dr Bruno Furst. There are often many patterns between the languages.
http://barnesinstitute.2freedom.com has some collections available for free. By learning, this way
you can pronounce and write in a similar way to your language and your memory will increase.
3. Learn in opposites. For every word there is an opposite. When you learn one word, learn the
opposite at the same time. It is possible to communicate with one word in every language.
Coffee! Coffee? Coffee. Coffee and. Coffee with. Coffee!?
Tea is the opposite of Coffee or no coffee. More literal opposites include Up/Down, Left/Right
A.G. Hawke is certified in 7 languages and uses this technique.
This technique will improve your Memory and Understanding.
4. Learn the Prepositions correctly. Prepositions do Not translate with a dictionary. They are
Kinaesthetic. They are feelings. Russians imagined standing On the road and they say “I'm on the
street”. English imagine the street as a box with the buildings on both sides and the road below so
“I'm in the street”. Practise them in patterns and be the 2nd person to use prepositions correctly (I am
the 1st)
5. Learn Verbs and Nouns in Example Sentences. English people have no idea what a phrasal verb is
or the present past continuous backwards forwards lemon and lime form of a word. Computers and
robots talk like that.
Instead Learn Verbs and Nouns. This is how English people learn at school.
Practise speaking with a native speaker using the verbs/nouns and add the Prepositions you have
already learned.
6. Speaking. Talk, talk, talk and talk some more. Your Professor should correct you continuously until
you speak correctly. You will speak perfect English today! is the attitude of an awesome teacher.
If the student has very basic English then Flash Cards with both languages on are excellent and give
the student a real sense of progress.
7. Children's books. An extra great thing for students also is to have a children's grammar book for
homework. Children's grammar books are so simple even a child could use them. There is a list of
10 pronunciation patterns which are all similar so when the student understands they will find it very
easy to remember. A children's picture dictionary is also a brilliant thing. They have the pictures
and 3 patterns of sentences with synonyms. These also make a class easier to teach.
8. Computer Programs
Through learning Portuguese I have discovered a large number of excellent language learning
programs. In some ways they are better than teachers and I think you should use computer programs
together with a teacher to double your learning. Learn new words and patterns with the computer
and test them with a teacher. Rosetta Stone is brilliant for learning patterns, pronunciation and uses
pictures to make you remember even more. Before You Know It gives you perfect memory of
phrases and words with the pronunciation emphasised.
Learn the things for your job. Ask students about their jobs and
offer to let them bring work books to your class.
Learn things about money. A student has asked me many times to help
him with his bank account (he used to work in a bank aswell). The
student is paying complete attention to whatever you teach them and
will remember more if the subject is important to them. I have found
money to be an amazing motivator for me learning a 2nd language. I
will read a foreign magazine for hours because of the money hidden
inside the language (i'm going to find more of it). If you want to
double the students motivation then use:
Do what you love. What do you love doing? If the person loves
History (some people do) then grab a 50p history book from a charity
shop and make them read it. In terms of pronunciation you can have a
student read their favourite subject and correct/explain as you go
along. This type of class is maximum benefit for student and teacher.
Most students are happy to learn by themselves and just want a teacher
to correct them. Give them what they want.
Learn idioms and phrasal verbs. These give you an extra something and
link the other parts of English together. An idiom often explains
certain situations very effectively. Phrasal verbs are a part of
native English. We (English people) don't ever learn these and so we
my find them hard to explain. They are worth studying and a quick tip
is that:
Learn from many methods and sources. Every method and techniques
has several benefits. Some are better for memory, others for
pronunciation and native English is the best thing about a few
methods. You will get the most learning from the most sources.
And the patterns you make will be more accurate. If 3 different
methods all say the same way to learn Verbs then you know learning
this way is a good idea. I meet students who studied with only 1
method before me and they were sure about the things they knew. To
be sure you need to hear 3 different people say it correctly for
example, then it will be obvious this is correct.
Remember 87% of what you learn: To remember 87% of what you learn, Practise it immediately, Review
the things you learned after 2 hours (or at the end of the class), Write the notes into your own words and
then Read your notes the next day. Its not essential to do all of these parts and if you do you will learn more.
For example if I test you at the end of the class then its not necessary to rewrite the notes at home. They are
more or less equal in value.
Dicas Quentes
Hot Tips
New pattern technique: if there was something you made mistakes with e.g. the/a/an were not in
sentences. Then translate 3 examples of the correct English into your language.
When you translate you will See some similarity. For example I did this with a polish guy and 2 of
the sentences translated the same. Both sentences did not have The. In English a collection of
countries/states/counties is “The UK, The US, The USSR”. In polish The is missing.
And it is still equal. Between portuguese and English > vai = going to. If you look for similarities
you will find them. OK OK.
Native Level English is the ability to translate 5 different phrases/sentences with identical
meaning immediately.
Your language is wonderful and you coffee is great, now decide to learn things quickly and easily.
Sequence: How do we remember days, months, numbers and similar things. Through sequence
and due to this being popular in every language we can make use of it. A student didn't
pronounce Thursday correctly and mixed it up with Tuesday (as many people did). So I say the
days either side of Thursday:
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday then Thursday, Friday, Saturday then Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday.
Then I ask the student to say all the days to me in sequence and they do so perfectly.
This technique makes use of patterns (do things 3 times), grouping (days) and of course
sequence.
I use this for numbers aswell and because the student already has numbers/days stored in their
mind this way. They recognise it immediately. It is familiar, which is according to Virginia Satir the
greatest need within humans.
Reward Good Behaviour: A teacher smiling, giving applause, looking excited or anything you can
think of can show a person they are doing well. When you was a baby people were so happy and
excited when you said one word. This amount of joy can inspire anyone, even adults. I recently
started giving students chocolate if they do well, you can do this if you like making people happy.
Maybe you can direct exceptional students to extra free resources e.g.
http://barnesinstitute.2freedom.com
I remember Maths at primary school. I was really enjoying the books, I did all the exercises and
then I asked for another book or more exercises. Primary Teacher didn't give me anything. So 20
minutes of unfun and I loved maths. But then when they started teaching silly stuff at secondary
school I stopped.
I could be doing a maths degree right now (boring) if a teacher had given me extra maths books.
Help your students learn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, OK
If they asked to learn something in the class and you don't know about it yet, google it later and
send them the information you find. They will appreciate it and you will make more money in the
future.
If you are learning English then reward yourself.
5 cans of beer or a big bar of chocolate after studying all day is good for you and You deserve it.
MP3 Recorder: This can be for teachers who record their classes to give to students or for people
learning English who can record new words/phrases they learn during the day. This is a useful
tool whenever you decide to use it. I bought a portable MP3 player for £17 and discovered it has a
recording function. The quality is surprisingly good also in fact its the best recorder I have had and
that includes large stereo systems.
Use English to Describe English: If you want True native English then forget grammar terms. Past
present continuous backward forward lemon and lime is Not English. Robots speak better English
than grammar books did. If a word is Continuous then its true for yesterday, today and tomorrow.
e.g. He drinks coffee (everyday). Everytime you Use English to describe English you make the
memories deeper and its quicker than translating between languages. You will Fill your mind with
synonyms automatically this way.
Accelerated English
Through my own experience of learning languages, teaching languages and reading the most advanced
methods available; I have discovered many techniques which speed up learning. These will be listed here
and I expect you to practise each one of them immediately.
All new learnings go into short term memory. If you practise it now then it will go into long term memory.
The strength of a memory is created through feelings, sounds, smells; the parts of experience. The more of
these you use the stronger the memory is.
Words linked to pictures are easier to remember. So imagine what the words mean. Imagine the new
English words you learn written on the actual thing. So you see a door with the word Door written on it and
maybe someone saying “can you open the Door please”.
To remember 88% of the things you learn its recommend that you:
Immediately practise
Test after a few minutes.
Review after the first hour.
Quick review when you wake up
Quick review after 7 days.
Quick review after a month.
Learn the specifics: Nouns and Verbs are easiest to learn 1st
Context is useful. Say “can I have £20 on my Oyster card please” and the person puts £20 on your oyster
card. This is proof for your mind that those words in this situation are correct. Because language represents
things. If you get what you want then the words are correct.
Short songs such as nursery rhymes as excellent for memorising pronunciation, words and structure.
Rhythm and rhyme helps memory. Its organised and creates emotion.
Memory is an associated connection of various ideas. So Mind Maps are excellent tools for remembering
things.
Sentences are easier to remember than individual words and so stories are great for building word structure
on top of previous learnings.
We all have photographic memory. Remember the last film you saw. Cool. Use this skill to learn your new
languages.
Music uses the right brain which a lot of note taking learning doesn't.
Reading English with your original language translated next to it; allows your unconscious mind to translate
the text with your peripheral vision.
Show the student the English in 3 senses: sight, sound and feeling. e.g. high 5, thumb war,
Learning Strategies
Affirmations
Say each affirmation until you believe it. When you are smiling and happy you may believe it.
English is easy. I can learn anything. I'm great at a many things. I am a genius.
I can learn English in 7 days. I am totally brilliant. When I have mastered English I am going to teach it.
When I have perfected English I can teach my own language and earn £20 an hour. I am going to speak
English better than the person who taught me. I speak to native English speakers all the time. This is
soooooo easy. I learned 1 language before I was 5 with no grammar, So learning English now, is going to
be very easy.
Write your commitment. Make yourself a Target, a Goal and do it Now!! e.g. I am going to learn English
quickly & easily. I am going to learn English within 1 month.
(Write these before you come to your 1st Barnes Method class)

Translate everything the other persons writes and make sure you Translate the meaning. Its ok to
translate literally at first (the words) then immediately change it into something Native speakers
understand. This will develop your translating intuition and make your response time even faster.

Barnes says:
so let's take this to the next level
so maybe learning from music is most effective method?
Learn from music: Listen to your English music while using messenger (msn) with a native speaker. Ask
questions about what you hear. Pery useful method.
Exception and Exceptional are almost the same word. Be the best. Study Barnes Method.
The word phonetic in English is not spelled with an F. It is pronounced as Fonetic which could confuse
users of languages like Portuguese (fonetica). If you learn the language as patterns then it will become
easier. The reason I can say 90% of English correctly is because my brain looks for visual similarities.
My brain also remembers similar words as only one sound. Examples of this I often teach are by/bye/buy
and to/too/two. These words all sound the same (equal) because its easier to remember them like this. Read
this list and when you know the pronunciation of 1 of the words then you can pronounce them all the same.
Trust me, I am a doctor. If I hear another “really?!” I am going to make you listen to English people. Now,
us English people all understand this system, so you can too (to/two).
The list above was found on the Internet with the title “English Homophones”. The original pdf did not have a name and so when
the author wants to take credit, write to me and I will label it as yours. The description and techniques belong to Perry Barnes.
Because these are the 100 most popular words. Learn them! Learn the pronunciation with a native speaker
and practise forming them into 2 and 3 word groups.
Adjustments
Languages such as Italian, Spanish and Portuguese are very similar to English and to each other. Yes, yes
your country is wonderful and your coffee is great, relax now.
With Portuguese you can change many of your words slightly (adjust them) and they become English words.
In fact you don't even have to change your pronunciation.
The meaning of communication is the response you get. If people understand you then you are correct. If
you want an English accent then get it later, maybe a day later if you want to.
The main point of this is many Portuguese words have an extra Syllable. For example Ter-mo
(Termo) in Portuguese is 2 syllables and Term in English is 1 syllable. Just by pronouncing 1 syllable

Similar Words
There are many similar words in Portuguese and English. These words may have the same amount of
Syllables. For example Imagens in English is Images, both words contain 3 syllables and so a slight
adjustment is needed.

Hallo,
also versucht "one-to-one" Trainer zu finden.
