1. Let f be a function with domain R. For each of the following statements say whether
it is true or false:
(a) If f

(x) = 0 for all x R, then f is a linear function.

(b) If f

(x) > 0 for all x R, then f

(x) > 0 for all x R.

(c) If f

(x) > 0 for all x R, then f

(x) > 0 for all x R.

Now give reasons for all your answers. Remember: If you think the statement is
false, it is good enough to give an example of a function for which the statement is
false. If you think it it is true, you have to give a reason or proof.
2. The graph of the derivative f

of a function f is given below.

y
x
y=f'(x)
a b
c d e
f
At which of the marked points is
(a) f(x) the largest? (b) f(x) the smallest? (c) f

(x) the largest?

(d) f

(x) the smallest? (e) f

(x) the largest? (f) f

(x) the smallest?

3. At which of the marked points on the graph of the function f given below are
(a) f

and f

both not zero and have the same sign?

(b) at least two of f, f

and f

equal to 0?

4. You are given that f(2) = 3.01, f

(2) = 0.3, and f

(2) = 4.
(a) If one zooms in to the graph of f at the point (2, 3.01), it looks like a straight
line. What is the equation of this line?
(b) Find an approximate value for f(2.03) using linear approximation.
(c) Do you think your answer to (a) is bigger or smaller than the actual value of
f(2.03)? Give a reason for your answer.
5. You are told that g

(x) = cosec x.
(a) What can you say about the graph of g on [0, 2]? (Where is it increasing,
decreasing, concave up, concave down? )
(b) Does the graph of g have a turning point on [0, 2]? Give a reason for your
answer.
(c) Is it possible that at some point on the graph of g the tangent line has equation
y =
1
2
x + 1? Give a reason for your answer.
6. The graph of a function f on the interval [0, 4] is given below.
(a) Draw a rough graph of a function F such that F

= f and F(0) = 1. Do not

try to nd a formula for F; draw the graph on the basis of the information
you have.
(b) Is it possible to nd a formula for F? If it is, nd it. Does it agree with your
answer in (a)?

7. Sketch a graph of a function f that satises all of the following conditions:
f

(x) > 0 if |x| < 2

f

(x) < 0 if |x| > 2

f

(2) = 0
lim
x2
|f

(x)| =
f

(x) > 0 if x = 2
8. For each of (a), (b) ,(c)and (d) below, give an example of a function f which satises
the given condition. You may give a formula for the function, or draw a rough graph
of the function.
(a) lim
x1
f(x) = f(1)
(b) lim
x1
f(x) = lim
h0
f(1 + h) f(1)

(c) lim
x1
f(x) = lim
h0
f(1 + h) f(1)
h
(d) lim

f(1 + h) f(1)
h
= lim

f(1 + h) f(1)

9. The function g is dened by
g(x) =

x
2
+ 2x + 1 if x 0
ax + b if x < 0
(a) What will you need to know before you can draw a graph of g?
(b) How should you choose a and b so that lim
x0
g(x) = g(0) (i.e, so that g is
continuous at x = 0)?
(c) How should you choose a and b so that g

(0) exists (i.e. g is dierentiable at

x = 0)?
