1. For which real numbers x will the following equations be true?
(a)

(x + 1)
4
= x + 1
(b) ln x
2
= 2 ln x
(c) sin(arcsin x) = x
(d) arccos(cos x) = x.
2. For each of the following statements, say whether it is true or false. If it is true,
give a reason or proof to show that it is always true (not just for some functions).
If it is false, give an example to show that it need not always be true.
(a) For any two distinct (that is, dierent) functions f and g, f g = g f.
(b) If f is an even and g an odd function, then f g is even.
(c) If f has an inverse function, then f is one-to-one.
3. The graph of a function f with domain the interval [0, 4] is given below.
On dierent axes, sketch rough graphs of the following functions.
[Hint: Think carefully about the domain of each function.]
(a) f

(x) = f(x) 3
(b) f

(x) = f(x 3)
(c) f

4. (a) Let the functions f and g be dened by f(x) = e

, g(x) =

2 x.
Find f g, g f and g g. Give the domain of each of these compositions.
(b) This time let f(x) =

x

2, g(x) = 2x + 3, and nd f g, g f and f f
(and their domains).
5. In each case below, a function h is given. Find functions f and g such that h = f g.

(b) h(t) = cos

7. Dr X has sold a scheme for introducing periodic power cuts to the Noordhoek local
authority. When the ratepayers hear about the scheme, they are incensed and
converge on the Town Hall, where Dr X is reported to be. When he hears the
angry mob approaching, he escapes by a back door, jumps on his rusty bicycle and
starts pedalling furiously up Chapmans Peak Drive. He reaches the top before being
overtaken, and with a sigh of relief starts racing down to Hout Bay. To his horror
he discovers that somebody has tampered with the brakes, and he has no way of
slowing down. His speed continues to increase until he manages to press the sole
of his sandal against the front tyre, and in this way the bicycle slows down to a
constant velocity (called the terminal velocity).
Two graphs are shown below; one shows the distance he has travelled (in metres)
as a function of time, the other his velocity (in metres per second) as a function of
time, both starting at the time he starts going downhill.

(a) Which is the velocity graph and which is the distance graph?
(b) Explain why the distance function s(t) has an inverse, but the velocity function
v(t) does not have an inverse.
(c) Find an approximate value for s
1
(1000).
(d) What is the the meaning of your answer in (c), in practical terms?
2
(e) What is s(s
1
(1000)? Explain your answer graphically and in practical terms.
(f) Estimate the slope of the tangent to the graph of s at t = 200 in two ways,
using the graphs given.
(g) There has been a rockfall on Chapmans Peak Drive 2 km from the top (on the
Hout Bay side). Of what practical importance would s
1
(2000) and v(s
1
(2000))
be to Dr X?
(h) Draw a rough graph of s
1
using the graph above.
8. The graphs of the functions f and g are shown below.
(a) The graph of f is sinusoidal (i.e. looks like that of a sine function). What is
the period of f? What is the amplitude of f?
(b) Use the graphs to nd
g f(0), g f(2), g f(4), g f(6), g f(8), g f(10), g f(12).
What do you notice?
(c) Explain why g f is a periodic function. What are the period and amplitude
of g f?
(d) Use the information youve obtained to draw a rough graph of g f.
(e) Find (i) f g(0) (ii) All the zeroes of f g.
[Hint: If f g(x) = 0, then g(x) = ?]
3
(f) Use your answer to (e)(ii) to show that f g is not periodic.
(g) What value does f g(x) tend to as x ? [Hint: What value does g(x)
tend to as x ?] What are you assuming about the function f to arrive at
your answer?
(h) Use the information you obtained above to draw a rough graph of f g.
