This map gives detailed information about Chicago Transit Authority bus and elevated/subway train service, and shows Pace suburban bus and Metra commuter train routes in the CTA service area. It is updated twice a year, and available at CTA rail stations, Metra downtown terminals, visitor centers, airports, or by calling the RTA Travel Information Center number below.

Regional Service Overview


CTA runs buses (routes 1 to 206) and elevated/subway trains serving the city and 40 nearby suburbs. Most routes run daily through late evening, every 10 to 20 minutes. Sunday schedules apply on New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. PACE runs buses throughout the suburbs (routes 208 and above), and many routes connect with CTA. Major routes run daily through mid-evening, every 30 to 60 minutes. You can use your CTA Transit Card, Chicago Card, Chicago Card Plus, or certain CTA Passes to ride. METRA runs 11 suburban commuter train lines from several downtown Chicago terminals. Rush hour service is frequent; otherwise every 1 to 2 hours. Most routes run daily. Fares are separate, but a Link-Up Pass is available to Metra monthly ticketholders for use on CTA (weekdays 6am9:30am and 3:30pm7pm) or Pace (anytime). SOUTH SHORE LINE runs commuter trains between downtown Chicago (Millennium and Van Buren stations) and South Bend Airport in Indiana. Daily service. Fares are separate.

When paying with a Transit Card, pass or permit, insert and remove it in the farecard machine on the farebox. The remaining value will show when inserted. If you dont have enough value left to pay the fare, pay the difference in cash. When paying with cash, put dollar bills in the center slot, and coins on the left side. CTA Student Riding Permit customers can pay fares with their permits if there is value on the permit. If paying with cash or Reduced Fare Transit Card, show permit to the operator. TRAINS: When using a Chicago Card or Chicago Card Plus, touch it to the designated pad on the turnstile and go. Buy a full-fare Transit Card from rail station farecard machines. Insert the exact amount (up to $100) you want to put on the card. Insert & Press VEND. You can also add value to your card or permit (minimum 5), or check the value at the farecard vending machine. Buses
Most routes run daily through late evening, every 10 to 20 minutes (see First Bus/Last Bus Times). All routes have timetables. Bus & Rail

Each rail line has a color name. Most lines run daily (except the Purple Line Express to Downtown). Trains run every 7 to 10 minutes, and every 10 to 15 minutes in later evenings (see First Train/Last Train Times for hours). There are free connections between all rail lines marked with T . Accessible stations are marked with X. At stations, a Customer Assistant or Security Guard is on duty to help you. Customer Assistance call buttons are located near turnstiles and on platforms. Obtain a CTA system map, Downtown Transit Sightseeing Guide, or a timetable from rail station brochure racks. Train frequencies are posted. See Bike & Ride section below for bicycle policies. Between Blue Line & Red Line subways: Exit at Jackson X, then walk DOWNSTAIRS from train platform through walkway to other subway. Between Loop Elevated lines (Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple): Exit at Clark/Lake X, Adams/Wabash, Washington/Wells X (except Green), or Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren X (except Green). Between Blue Line subway and Loop Elevated lines, two choices are available: 1. Exit at Clark/Lake X from either the Blue Line subway or Loop Elevated and use stairs, escalators or elevators within the station through adjacent buildings. 2. Exit at Jackson X from the Blue Line subway and walk one-half block south on Dearborn to the Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren X elevated station (except for Green). Do the reverse coming from the elevated lines. This is a free connection, but you will need to use your farecard or pass to enter the other station. No transfer charge or use will be deducted. Between Red Line subway and Loop Elevated lines, three choices are available: 1. Exit at Lake X from the Red Line subway or State/Lake from Loop Elevated lines and use stairs to access the other station. This is a free connection, but you will need to use your farecard or pass to enter the other station. No transfer charge or use will be deducted. 2. Exit at Jackson X from the Red Line subway and walk one-half block south on State to the Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren X elevated station (except for Green). Bicycles can be carried on CTA trains and on bus bicycle racks. Bicycles are permitted on trains weekdays (except from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm), and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, (except July 4th). Over 90 stations have indoor or sheltered bicycle parking. Limit two bicycles per train car or bus. Restrictions apply to customers under age 14. Bike & Ride brochures are available at CTA rail stations, or by calling 312-836-7000. You can also visit CTAs web site at transitchicago.com/bikeandride.

Overnight: Use #N201 bus between Central (Purple) & Howard X (Red, Purple, Yellow) stations. On Fridays, trains operate 30 minutes later - last train leaves Howard at 1:55am and Linden at 2:15am.
