EXPERIMENT NO.7 THE SPECIFIC HEAT OF METAL I. Abstract

This experiment verifies the specific heat of a metal sample (copper). It presents the reaction of the change in temperature. It shows the heat absorbed and the heat released by the ) ( sample metal. We used the equation ( ) . First, we measured the mass of the materials. We came up with the following results: mass of metal sample = 143.10 grams, mass of the calorimeter = 32.30 grams, mass of the calorimeter with water = 220.80 grams and the mass of the water = 192.30 grams. We subtracted the mass of the calorimeter with water to the calorimeter without water to come up with the mass of the water: MASS:

Second, with the given specific heat of the calorimeter water and copper given, we performed the test and got an initial temperature of the metal sample, the calorimeter and the water: Specific Heat Initial Temperature

Third, we stirred the substance and used the thermometer to get its final temperature. We got as the final temperature of the system. We can now get the change in temperature of the substances by subtracting the final to the initial. We got the results for the metal sample, calorimeter and water as respectively. We can now compute for the heat absorbed by the calorimeter and water with the given results and with the ) ( equation( ) :

Fourth, with the given results, assuming we dont know yet the specific heat of cooper, we computed for the specific heat of the metal:

( )

Lastly, we computed for the percentage error with the given specific heat of the metal sample of 0.093cal/gC. We used the equation

Guide Questions

1) Define the following: a) Heat - energy transferred from one body, region, or thermodynamic system to another due to thermal contact when the systems are at different temperatures. b) Heat capacity - the amount of heat required to change the temperature of the whole system 2) Why is it desirable to have the water a few degrees colder than room temperature when the initial temperature is taken? - to fully see the reaction and the change in temperature. The temperature of a water in the 3) Why is the mass of the outer shell of the calorimeter and the insulating ring not included in the data for this experiment? - it is not causing the system to change in temperature. Its just for insulating the heat outside. 4) What does this experiment show about the specific heat of water? - the specific heat of water is greater than any solid material . If the substance has more water, the longer it takes to absorb heat. 5) How does the heat conductivity of the metal used in this experiment affect the accuracy of the results? - if the heat conductivity of the metal is fast, the longer it is exposed in the room temperature, the more of its heat is loss. In which, more percentage error could be observed.

6) Why should the hot metal be dry before it is introduced into the cold water? -by adding some hot water in the solution, the temperature of the system is changed not only by the metal but by some of the heat of the water that is included on the wet metal. 7) 837 calories of heat are required to heat 100.00 grams of copper from 10C to 100C. What is the specific heat of copper?
