METHOD OF SUB-SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK

All drilling, sampling and laboratory testing works will be done according to ASTMspecifications or as directed by the Engineer-in-charge of the project. 1) Execution of drilling by wash boring method : The exploratory boring shall be executed at the fixed points by the wash boring method in the following way ; First a 4 inches diameter casing pipe shall be driven vertically in to the ground to a sufficient depth. A chopping bit is attached to the lower end of a drill rod is lowered into the casing pipe and move up and down with the help of a wire/rope. The other end of the drill rod was fitted with a swival head which is connected to a water pump through a high pressure hosepipe.The up and down movement of the drill rod help the chopping bit to disintergrate the soil and make it loose. The water circular through the suitable head into the drill rod and is emerged through the pores of the bit at a high pressure. Water then rise up annular space between the drill rod and the casing and carry the loose soil out of the drill hole which is advanced in this way. No further casing is used with the advance of drillings. The hole is always keep full with water. As a result the excess hydrostatic pressure above the formation water pressure prevent the uncased wall of the hole from collapsing. In case of loose sandy soil, special type of drilling mud is used which forms a thin lining on the wall of the boring and prevent the hole from collapsing. 2) Execution of standard penetration test (SPT): Standard penetration test (SPT) Shall be performed at the interval of 1.5 m upto 15 m and 3.0 m for the remaining depth of boring in all the bore holes. Tests will be executed by using a split-spoon sampler of 35 mm internal diameter and a 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a constant height of 76 cm on the drill rod. Number of blows produce the penetration are recorded in three different 15cm intervals. The N values are counted as the summation of the number of blows required in the 2nd and 3rd 15cm of penetration against the respective interval of depth. 3) Extraction of disturbed soil sample: Disturbed soil samples are collected at every 1.5 m interval upto 15.0 m and 3.0 m for the remaining depth of boring in all the bore hole. These soil samples are duly classified in situ in order to construct a depthwise stratification`s chart of borehole and to evaluate the overall sub-soil picture of the investigated site. Cohesionless soils were sampled with the split spoon
sampler in accordance with ASTM D1586 standard procedure

01

d) Extraction of undisturbed soil sample: The soil samples are collected from cohesive layers in thin walled sample tubes known as shelby tubes. The shelby tubes are 3 inches in dia having 1/16th inches wall thickness. The length of the tubes as usually 18 to 24 inches. Before collection of a sample the hole is washed and cleaned for some time shelby is attached to the lower end of the drill rod with the help of an adapter head. The sampler is pressed down into the ground in continuous movement until the tube except 4 inches from the top was filled with soil sample. After the shelby tube is taken out of the hole, the end are cleaned and sealed with paraffin wax in order to prevent any change in moisture content. Samples of cohesive soils were obtained with a threeinch thin-walled (Shelby) tube sampler in general accordance with ASTM D 1587.

e) Recording of ground water level: Ground water levels along the project alignment are measured during drilling operation and 24 hours afterward. Specific ground water readings shall be indicated on the boring logs.

2) Laboratory testing :
Selected soil samples shall be tested in the laboratory to determined applicable physical and engineering properties. The laboratory test will be done as per international standard (ASTM). The program included;
SL No 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 PHYSICAL LABORATIORY TEST ON SOIL Natural moisture content 1 Nos./ boring From BUET laboratory " " Specific gravity test Unconfined Compression test Direct shear test Consolidation 2 Nos./ boring " 1 Nos./ boring " 1 Nos./ boring " 1 Nos./ 3 boring " Note : BUET Rate sheet will be supplied as hard copy as per your requirement. Description of Laboratory work Quantity Remarks

Atterberg limits test (Liquid & Plastic 1 Nos./ boring limit) Grain size distribution test 2 Nos./ boring

02

Grain size analysis, Atterberg`s limits and specific gravity tests will be carried out to ascertain the detail composition of the soil. These tests also help in classifying the soil properly for geological and geo-technical interpretation. The unconfined compression, unit weight and direct shear tests will be performed to evaluate the shear characteristics and friction values of the sub-soil formation. Consolidation and Atterberg`s limit test furnish data on consolidation character of the sub-soil. These tests are used to determine the settlement behavior of the sub-soil formation, where the foundation will rest.

3) Evaluation & Reporting. Evaluation of the results of each test and report shall be submitted in the form of tables as well as graphical representations, analysis and all other information of the soil parameters.
