Ang mga miyembro ng Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community (HFCC) Council na pinangungunahan ni Fr. Alvin B. Parantar, MSP, ay nagkaroon ng isang Team Building outing noong nakaraang Sabado hanggang Linggo, ika 56 ng Setyembre 2009 na ginanap sa Namyangju. Layunin ng outing na ito na bigyan ang bawat miyembro ng Council ng pagkakataong makilala ang bawat isa at lalo pang mapag-igting ang samahan bilang paghahanda sa mga gawain ng Sambayanan. Ang mga miyembro ng HFCC Council habang nagsasaya at nagagalak sa kanilang matagumpay na pagtawid ng ilog sa pamamagitan ng sama-sama at nagkakaisang pagtutulungan at pagalalay sa bawat isa. Ito ang kahulugan ng Team Building.

Every year, the Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community organizes big events such as concerts and beauty pageants as a fund raising activity. This year, the Ginoo at Binibining Kalinangang Filipino (Mr. and Ms. Filipino Culture) is being organized for this purpose. The previous beauty pageants highlighted beauty, physical appearance, talent and intelligence. Though we consider these of importance, this event gives prime importance to how the Filipino culture and values are highlighted, lived, expressed and portrayed by the candidates. Performances shall evolve around Filipino presentations showing Filipino cultural dances, songs and music, history, and culture. Regional traditional costumes shall be paraded and instead of the usual gown competition, it shall be a parade of the traditional Maria Clara and Barong Tagalong. The questions shall illicit responses from the candidates that are reflective of the innate Pinoy values and intelligence.

Objectives: Specifically, the event has the following objectives: 1. Showcase the best of Filipino culture: dances, songs, language, costumes, beauty, values, and traditions; 2. Highlight the best practices and characteristics of the Filipino migrants in Korea; 3. Provide a venue for cultural sharing and interaction between the Koreans and the Filipinos; and 4. To raise funds for the different programs and outreach activeties of the community such as: - Hospital and medical assistance; - Scholarship program; - Emergency deportation; and - Other urgent needs and outreach activities of the Philippine Center. Tickets worth 10,000 won shall give every kababayan a chance to: 1. 2. 3. 4. watch the event; be reminded of the Filipino culture and values; win big prizes in the raffle draw; and help a kababayan who is need.

The first round of games of the 2009 HFCC Basketball Tournament ended on 30 August 2009 (Sunday) when the Tambayan team defeated the Ilocano team with a score of 84 - 83 in the first game. Tambayan's player #19, Dulano, was chosen as the game's best player. The second game went to the Foreign Mart team when the Mindoro team failed show up and defaulted the game. The game was held at the Salesian - Don Bosco Center Gymnasium.

The man won (10,000) can go a long, long way to entertain oneself, be proud of being Pinoy, and helping others.

Only six (6) teams will go on to compete in the second round of games. These teams are IBAANIAN, ROSARIANS, FOREIGN MART, ILONGGO, TAMBAYAN, and ILOCANO. Watch out for announcements of the games schedule.

Ibinabahagi ni Jesus sa kanyang mga tagasunod ang dakilang gawaing magligtas at magpabanal kayat sa huli ay isang biyaya ang maging isang disipulo ni Jesu-Kristo. Mahirap maging isang disipulo ni Jesu-Kristo. Ang sinumang magpasan ng krus ay magbabata ng hirap at sakit. Subalit sa kabila nito ay binabata rin niya ang kapangyarihan ng pag-ibig at tagumpay, kaligtasan at kabanalan. Ang krus na ito ay maghahatid sa atin patungong langit, sapagkat bago muling mabuhay ang tao sa kalangitan, kinakailangan niyang mamatay ng nagmamahal at nagpapakabanal at yaon ay nagaganap lamang sa krus ni Jesus. Ibinabagi ni Jesus sa kanyang mga tagasunod ang gawaing umibig kahit nasasaktan kayat sa huli ay isang pagpapala ang maging isang disipulo ni Jesu-Kristo. Mahirap maging isang disipulo ni Jesu-Kristo. Subalit ang pagsunod kay Jesu-Kristo ang magpapadalisay sa ating pagkatao at maghahatid sa atin sa tunay na kabanalan. Wika ni Jesus, Kung ibig ninumang sumunod sa akin, limutin ang kanyang sarili, pasanin ang krus at sumunod sa akin. (Mc. 8:34) Isang hirap na puno ng pagpapala ang sumunod kay Jesu-Kristo.

PRE-PRAYERING Aggravate does not mean to injure or start something hurtful, but rather to re-injure or pick at something already hurtful. To say that a person aggravates us means that there is already an existing ouchy. KARUNUNGAN:
Fr. Gerry Pierse, C.Ss.R. About 30 years ago Pope John XXIII popularized the expression "reading the signs of the times" as a way of doing theology. According to this method, before saying anything about God one should first listen to the situation, to what is going on in the world around us, to hear what it may be telling us about the creator. The assumption here is that God is active in the world and in people's relationships and by reflecting on these we can learn much about God. This was in contrast to the "a priori" method which assumed that "somebody up there" had all of the answers already worked out and it was up to the faithful to just implement them. In the scene in today's Gospel, the encounter with Peter at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus gives a lesson in "signs of the times" theologizing. He is interested in what is going on around him and in what people are thinking. This is the first source of knowledge about reality. He asks them, "who do people say that I am?" The disciples venture some guesses and then Jesus moves into the second place where knowledge of reality - and of God - is found. He asks them, "and you, who do you say that I am?" What does your inner voice, the Spirit within you say? This was really a sort of mid-term exam for the disciples. Simon Peter had a flash of genius and gave the top scoring answer. "You are the Messiah, the son of the living God." According to Matthew's Gospel Jesus then answered, "blessed are you Simon Barjona for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you but my Father in Heaven." In this Jesus pointed to a third source of Divine Knowledge - the Father in heaven. Because of his bright answer Peter was given instant promotion. "And now I say to you: you are Peter (or Rock) and on this rock I will build my church and never will the powers of the nether-world overcome it." In this passage we see three sources of knowledge about God. Firstly, we have the world around us. So knowledge of God can be found in the sciences like history, sociology, demography, anthropology. Secondly, there is the world inside us. Knowledge is to be found through exploring that world and knowing oneself better. The world of psychology is a gateway to knowledge of our inner being and of the workings of the Spirit in that sacred temple. Finally, there is revelation, there are truths that are given to us by God which could not be discovered or uncovered by

introspection or observation. These places where we can find God also indicate the places where we should respond to him. We should and do respond to God especially in worship. In our listening, especially through the stories of scripture, and in our communal efforts to make life better for others we are listening to and responding to the God who is incarnate in this world. When we are still in meditation we are present to the God who dwells in the cave of our hearts. There is a great exhilaration in coming to a deeper awareness of the richness and multiplicity of God's ways of being amongst us. However, such awareness does not give us a reason to sit back and rejoice and say "we've made it." The discipleship of Jesus is an unending journey. Within minutes of Peter's promotion, Jesus begins to talk about going up to Jerusalem to suffer. At this Peter takes Jesus aside and tries to remonstrate with him. To which Jesus said "Get behind me, Satan! because the way you think is not God's way but man's." While Peter had been promoted he had, as yet, missed the core of the message of Jesus. No matter how much insight we may have, no matter how much affirmation we may be getting, we must never forget our littleness and our sinfulness. The mystery of God is infinite and multi-faceted. Let us be grateful for the knowledge that comes to us from the world around us, from the Spirit within us and from above. But much more let us be humble before our infinite ignorance.

I read an interesting story about a boy who had a pet boa constrictorit was 4 meters long and they were best of friends. They slept side by side with the little boy so comfortably snuggled against the enormous snake. I once worked as a volunteer at the Manila Zoo and there, holding snakes was an ordinary thing. We did it every day. Their skin felt good to the touch, and there was something warm and comforting in such coldness.

Continuation from page 7Why is the Philippines still poor? that fostered an inward-looking, import-substitution industrialization based on protectionist, anti-market, and ultra-nationalist ideologies not very different from what most Latin American countries implemented with the same dire consequences. Over-reacting to our colonial past (as did the Latin Americans), we equated economic development with capitalintensive industrialization that did nothing to address our massive unemployment and underemployment problem. The worst consequence of these failed economic policies was not the eventual demise of the socalled infant industries that never grew up. The most devastating result was the almost criminal neglect of countryside and agricultural development. Because we used up our capital resources in the white elephants of the manufacturing sector, there were no resources left to build farm-tomarket roads, irrigation systems, post-harvest facilities, seaports, and airports that were essential to making our small farmers productive. Agrarian reform failed, not because of the fragmentation of land, but because we did not provide the small farmers with the wherewithals to be both productive and cost-effective. For some of our economic policy makers during this sad stage of our history, the neglect of countryside and agricultural development was more of a sin of omission: They were so obsessed with industrialization that they were blind to the needs of the rural populations, which accounted for 50 percent or more of the labor force. For a few others, however, the neglect of the countryside was based on an ideology that agriculture was a despicable sector that was the very symbol of colonial servitude. I remember debates that the late Jimmy Ongpin (who served as Finance Secretary under President Cory Aquino) and I had with some leading economists who were hell bent on investing more heavily on capital-intensive industries oriented to the domestic market. Because we were arguing for more investments in agriculture, we were accused of wanting to keep the Philippines as a "hewer of wood and a drawer of water." Jimmy Ongpin even made a trip to southern Spain to present evidence to these critics of agriculture that agribusiness can be even more high-tech than the oldfashioned manufacturing projects that the fanatics of industry wanted to push. The rest is history. The bias against agriculture was so ingrained at the highest levels of Philippine society that it took almost till the end of the last century before a real shift toward agricultural and rural development could take place. In the meantime, our non-identical twin in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Thailand, was busy building farm-to-market roads, irrigation systems, post-harvest facilities, etc. The result was dramatic. Whereas we were well ahead of Thailand in almost all indicators of human development in the late 1970s, today Thailandthe agribusiness superpower of Southeast Asiahas twice our per capita income and a poverty line onethird ours. It has become the largest rice exporter in the world and a large exporter of many other high-value agricultural products. Because of the enlightened policy of focusing on rural and agricultural development, Thailand has been able to attain a higher level of development and significantly reduce poverty, despite the fact that corruption has also been rampant in that country. Our story does not have to have an unhappy ending. In 1998, when Senator Edgardo Angara was the Secretary of Agriculture under the Estrada Administration, we saw a definitive shift away from inward-looking, importsubstitution industrialization toward rural and agricultural development. Fortunately, this redirection of economic policy has been retained under the Administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Witness the significant improvements in countryside infrastructure represented by the Philippine nautical highway which has greatly improved the efficiency of transport of agricultural products from one island to another. The very visible improvements in Central Luzon (Clark-Subic-Tarlac highways) are being replicated in the Northern Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle, in many regions in Mindanao, in very poor provinces like Aurora and Bicol, etc. As long as the next President will continue the focus on countryside infrastructure, we can be optimistic that we can make a dent on our serious poverty problem in the next 10 to 20 years. After all, 70 percent of the Philippine poor are in the rural areas. There is one advice I would like to give to the OFWs reading this column. If and when you return to the Philippines, use your talents, experiences, and capital to engage in small- and medium-scale businesses in your respective provinces. You can grow high-value crops like tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, papaya, sweet pineapple, honey dew melonespecially in provinces like Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, and Bulacan which have the 10 million consumers of Metro Manila as your market. You can also operate restaurants, bed-and-breakfast and other tourist facilities, nurseries and kindergartens, and other service establishments in the increasingly urbanized rural areas in Central and Northern Luzon and in Northern and Southern Mindanao. Staying in the provinces does not mean that you have to be necessarily involved in agriculture. You can be in the many small-scale industries and services that are now dotting the countryside as better infrastructures are helping to disperse population away from the National Capital Region. As you come close to retirement age, you will find living in the Philippines much more pleasant than staying wherever you are. As you helped them with the remittances you sent all these years, you can also help to take care of your aging parents and grandparents with your physical presence upon your return.
