The Purpose
Sustainability (environmental, social and economic equity problems) is the defining challenge of the twenty first century The role of education system in sensitizing, raising awareness and taking local action is key. As an emerging economic power, India needs to be at the vanguard and to act as a role model to demonstrate how it is possible to achieve economic prosperity without compromising on ecological sustainability and social inclusiveness For this to happen, our future generations of policy makers, administrators, educationists and technocrats need to be adequately schooled in ecological issues and the sensibilities around these issues. The program s designed to act as a catalyst for fostering excellence in sustainability thinking and doing amongst our young -both, at the high school level and at the college/university level.

The concept of the program

I. Writing a Paper, leading to an award
The program will conceptually comprise two parts the first part will be an award for authoring high quality papers on any of the given nine themes* of sustainability. The objective is to encourage rigor and critical thinking, to develop an interdisciplinary view of the problem and to provide an approach that is simultaneously innovative and practical. Ten winners will be chosen in all, five at the high school level and five at the college level

II. Continuous engagement with the winning institutions

The second part will be a continuous process of engaging with the winning institutions on multiple fronts of sustainability e.g. we will work with the institutions in setting up a sustainability lab which will act as an experimentation and innovation hub within the school / college for activities around sustainability. The institution will also be expected to progress steadily on the path to becoming a greener campus. Both these dimensions will be included as factors for evaluating winners in subsequent years

The awards
A total of five awards each will be given - for the 5 best entries across themes.
High School Eligibility Award description Classes 9,10,11,12 of any recognized school in India -Five awards of Rs 2 Lacs each, a Trophy for institution and Certificates for winning members - Special certificates for the best entries in each of the nine themes

The program is unique because..

It combines sustainability and education : Two vital areas which are at the core of Indias development agenda and where we happen to be engaged deeply Of its scale and reach : It is conceived as a national-level program and includes both schools and colleges. In the first year itself, we are reaching reach out to an estimated +6000 schools and 1500 colleges. It will set high standards : The nine themes span a wide range of sustainability topics and will demand high caliber intellectual engagement from the participants. The stringent assessment will involve an external jury of experts at the second stage It will bring together a variety of stakeholders our partners and networks in WATIS and sustainability thought leaders in the country. It is not so much about awards - while every annual cycle will culminate with an awards event, the signature strength of this program will be in its continuous , deep engagement with schools and colleges.

What does it mean for participating institutes ?

The winning institutions get an opportunity to present their papers at a national forum hosted by us and to interact with sustainability experts a great platform for further engagement

Connect to the ecosystem

As part of the continuous engagement, the institutions will get access to the larger sustainability ecosystem research groups, other academic partners, funding groups etc

The program will have great aspiration value for schools and colleges, especially the opportunity to be associated with the Wipro brand and other leading names in sustainability The paper themes call for original thinking and will require both, faculty and students to collaborate in the research and writing process. This will act as a catalyst for dialog and discussion within the institution leading to change
