Afdavit says D.C. ofcer stood on hood of car, red through windshield
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
An off-duty D.C. police ofcer charged with ring a pistol at three transgender women and two male friends last Friday was in handcuffs this week as marshals led him into court for a preliminary hearing. D.C. Superior Court Chief Judge Lee F. Sattereld, who is presiding over the case, granted a request by an attorney representing Ofcer Kenneth Furr to postpone a Tuesday hearing until Friday, adding to the suspense surrounding an incident that has outraged LGBT activists and city ofcials, including Mayor Vincent Gray. (Visit washingtonblade.com for updates on this story.) Sattereld ordered Furr returned to jail pending Fridays hearing, where the judge will rule on whether the ofcer should remain in jail while he awaits trial. Furr has been on the force for more than 20 years. He was charged last week with assault with a dangerous weapon and driving while intoxicated following allegations by the victims and witnesses that he shot at least three of ve people sitting in a car about 5:25 a.m. on Aug. 29 at First and Pierce streets, N.W. Two of three transgender women sitting in the car were hit by bullets and suffered non-life threatening injures, police said. One of two males in the car was also struck, suffering

Choi trial halted after challenge to judges ruling

Preliminary evidence shows vindictive prosecution
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
A federal judge on Wednesday suspended the trial of gay former Army Lt. Dan Choi after the prosecutor said she would challenge his preliminary nding that sufcient evidence exists that Choi was targeted for vindictive prosecution in connection with a White House protest last November. Choi and 12 other activists were arrested Nov. 15 for handcufng themselves to the White House fence to protest the Dont Ask, Dont Tell law. Choi faces a possible sentence of six months in jail or a $5,000 ne if convicted on a misdemeanor charge of disobeying a lawful order to disperse from the fence. In a tense exchange between U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge John Facciola, prosecutor Angela George announced she would le a request for a writ of mandamus or legal challenge before the courts chief judge to contest Facciolas decision to allow Chois attorneys to pursue a vindictive prosecution defense. Facciola responded by saying he would suspend the trial for 10 days to give George, an assistant U.S. Attorney, time to prepare a motion for a writ of mandamus and to provide Chief Judge Royce Lamberth time to consider it. William Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorneys ofce, conrmed that George would seek the writ of mandamus from Lamberth. But he declined to comment further on the matter, saying his ofce never comments on pending cases. If Lamberth grants the request, legal observers say Facciola would likely be directed not to allow Chois attorneys to pursue a vindictive prosecution defense. Should he turn down the request, Facciola would be free to allow the vindictive prosecution defense to move forward. Such a defense would allow Chois attorneys to pursue documents and subpoena witnesses that Chois supporters say could possibly link the alleged effort to go after Choi for a harsher prosecution to higher-level government ofcials, including ofcials at the White House. Defense attorney Robert Feldman called Facciolas nding that the defense presented a prima facie case that a vindictive prosecution occurred a vindication of Chois longstanding contention that his arrest and prosecution violated his constitutional right to free speech. The clash between George and Facciola came on the third day of the trial and one day after Choi testied for more than two hours as the lead witness for his own defense, saying he was exercising his First Amendment right to free speech at the White House protest. In response to Feldmans questions, Choi testied at length about his role as a civil rights activist for LGBT people and for gays in the military. He told how he models his actions on the black civil rights movement of the 1960s, including the famous lunch counter sit-ins at a Woolworths department store in Greensboro, N.C., that challenged segregation laws. Choi testied that a series of three White House protests against the Dont Ask, Dont Tell law on gays in the military, in which he and other activists were arrested at the White House fence, were based on the same principle used in the black civil rights movement for exercising a constitutional right of free speech. I believe that was a transformative moment, he said of the White House protests. George objected repeatedly to Chois dialogue on civil rights, saying it was not relevant to the case at hand. To the amazement of some courtroom observers, Facciola overruled her objections almost every time she raised them. In her cross-examination of Choi, George pressed the former Army ofcer, West Point graduate and combat veteran in the Iraq war to respond to the charge that he disobeyed a lawful order to disperse from the White House fence. Choi responded by citing a provision in U.S. military law pertaining to unlawful orders. If you are given an order that is unlawful or immoral, it is your duty to disobey that order, he said. Feldman and defense co-counsel Norman Kent told reporters covering the trial that Chois defense is based, in part, on the premise that prosecutors singled him out for a harsher prosecution when they charged him with violating a federal regulation pertaining to White House protests and demonstrations along the White House fence and sidewalk. The federal regulation carries a penalty of six months in jail and a possible $5,000 ne. The two attorneys said people arrested in virtually all other White House demonstrations in recent memory including Choi and other activists in similar protests in April and May of 2010 were charged under a D.C. municipal ordinance they compare to a trafc violation that carries no prison sentence. In his testimony on Tuesday, Choi said he believes prosecutors decided to invoke the far more harsh federal regulation against him in the Nov. 15, 2010 case, which he now faces at trial, because of his role as a gay former military ofcer who is standing up for my beliefs. Choi stated in his testimony that thousands of people appeared to have violated the same regulation with which he was charged when they gathered at the White House earlier this year to celebrate President Barack Obamas announcement that accused

terrorist Osama bin Laden had been killed in a U.S. military operation in Pakistan. Choi and his attorneys noted that dozens of the revelers that evening clung to the White House fence and did not move back and forth along the sidewalk, as required under the ordinance for a demonstration, when they cheered and expressed support for the presidents role in bin Ladens capture and death.

By not attempting to disperse or arrest the throngs that congregated at the fence on that occasion while they arrested Choi and other protesters for challenging Obama on his handling of the Dont Ask, Dont Tell law shows that Choi was singled out for vindictive prosecution, Chois attorneys argue.

OMalley to headline Equality Md. event

Equality Maryland has an event slated for Wednesday in which several local elected ofcials will be honored including Gov. Martin OMalley who said in July that getting a same-sex marriage law passed next year is among his legislative goals. Dubbed Celebrate and Honor, it will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Chevy Chase Town Hall (4301 Willow Lane in Chevy Chase) with cocktails and presentations. Aside from OMalley, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman will be honored. Lisa Polyak, interim board chair for the organization, said the board decided whom to honor and was in agreement in its decisions. The organization has typically held a gala-type event but scaled back this year as it attempts to stabilize the organization after the departure of former director Morgan Meneses-Sheets, whom they red in April after a disappointing 2011 legislative session that saw a marriage bill fail. OMalley, criticized by some Maryland gays for previously supporting civil unions over marriage, changed his tune after a marriage bill passed with strong gubernatorial support this year in New York. Did the board fear some criticism would emerge for their decision to honor OMalley so quickly when for years he did little to help their cause? Polyak said no. I think its a good idea to honor people who come out publicly in their support and pledge to put the strength of their ofce fully behind us, she said. Tickets are $50. Sponsorship levels are available ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Go to equalitymaryland.org and look under events for details. Polyak said Equality Maryland has stabilized in recent months. She said the organization is operating in the black again after a shaky start to the year and a full board bylaws say the C-4 arm can have 15 members by months end. Many qualied candidates have applied for the executive director position, she said, which they hope to ll no later than November. She credits the ve current board members for working their ngers to the bone to stabilize the organization this summer.

Anti-gay Republican to challenge Baldwin for Senate

MADISON, Wisc. Though shes yet to announce plans to run to replace outgoing U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) is already the target of a Republican hopeful for the seat. According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, while announcing his candidacy Monday morning, former Rep. Mark Neumann said, I believe our opponent is Tammy Baldwin and I believe it is essential that we bring Tammy Baldwins record to the forefront. Neumann made headlines for once telling the Christian Coalition he would not hire a gay staffer. If somebody walks in to me and says, Im a gay person, I want a job in your ofce, I would say thats inappropriate, and they wouldnt be hired because that would mean they are promoting their agenda, he said during the 1997 speech. The gay and lesbian lifestyle [is] unacceptable, lest there be any question about that.

Perry signs anti-gay marriage pledge

Joins fellow GOP presidential hopefuls in endorsing NOM agenda
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
The newest entry in the eld of Republican presidential hopefuls has signed his name to an anti-gay pledge to oppose same-sex marriage if elected to the White House. The National Organization for Marriage announced Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who last month ofcially declared his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, had penned his name to a document committing himself to various initiatives in opposition to same-sex marriage. In a statement, Brian Brown, NOMs president, praised Perry and called the thrice-elected Texas governor a marriage champion for signing the pledge. By doing so, Perry makes crystal clear that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, gay marriage is going to be a bigger issue in 2012 than it was in 2008, because the difference between the GOP nominee and President Obama is going to be large and clear, Brown said. We look forward to demonstrating that being for marriage is a winning position for a presidential candidate. The Perry campaign didnt immediately respond to the Washington Blades request for comment on the candidates signing of the pledge. Other Republican presidential candidates signed the pledge prior to Perrys entry into the race, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). NOM asserted that former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty had also agreed to sign his name to the pledge, but he has since exited the race. By signing the document, Perry commits upon election as president to undertake several initiatives against samesex marriage: supporting congressional passage and sending to the states a U.S. constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage throughout the country; defending in court the Defense of Marriage of Act, a 1996 law that prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriage; appointing judges and a U.S. attorney general who will respect the original meaning of the U.S. Constitution; supporting legislation allowing D.C. residents to vote on whether or not to abrogate the Districts same-sex marriage law; and appointing a presidential commission to investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters. Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, said Perrys signature on the anti-gay pledge demonstrates his presidency would be bad news for LGBT Americans. Rick Perrys alignment with NOM and their McCarthy-esque pledge is yet further evidence that a President Perry would be terrible for LGBT equality, Cole-Schwartz said. Perry has long opposed same-sex marriage. In 2005, he helped pass a state constitutional amendment in Texas banning gay nuptials and civil unions. This year, after initially saying he was ne with New York legalizing same-sex marriage, Perry later reiterated support for a Federal Marriage Amendment, which would rescind the Empire States marriage law and prohibit same-sex marriage throughout the country. Since ofcially entering the race, Perry has become a leader in the polls among the Republican presidential candidates. Several polls have shown him with double-digit leads. According to a Gallup poll published last week, Perry is 11 points ahead of other prospective Republican presidential candidates. Twenty-nine percent of respondents said theyre most likely to support Perry, with Romney next, at 17 percent. Similarly, according to data published from Public Policy Polling, Perry has a full-third of responders support among Republican voters. Romney trailed with 13 points and Bachmann had 16 percent. Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, said in a statement Perrys lead could be temporary because hes just entered the race, but added the signicant lead he has over other candidates may indicate hell stay on top longer. There have been a lot of avors of the month in the Republican Presidential race and its possible that Rick Perry is just another of those, Debnam said. But his support right now is stronger than Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain or Donald Trump or Mike Huckabees ever was, which suggests he should have more staying power. Sean Theriault, whos gay and a political scientist at University of Texas, Austin, said LGBT people should be fearful of Perrys lead in the polls because the Texas governor on marriage is at least two steps to the right on this issue than [former President] George W. Bush.

Equality Calif. gets tough on teaching bill opponents

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Calling them hate groups, Equality California got tough this week in an effort to undermine efforts by conservative groups in California to repeal a state law mandating the inclusion of LGBT history and disabled peoples history in California curriculum. Last week the Family Research Council, a virulent anti-LGBT organization with ties to the Ku Klux Klan and recognized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, joined the effort to overturn the FAIR Education Act in California and released a video message to fundamentalist churches on behalf of the campaign, the strongly worded Equality California press release began. I dont believe any fair-minded parent would nd friends of the KKK a trustworthy protector of their children, said Roland Palencia, executive director of Equality California in the statement.

Prop 8 plaintiffs ask for tapes to be released

SAN FRANCISCO Lawyers for the group seeking to overturn Californias anti-gay Proposition 8 in federal court sought this week to have videotapes of the trial testimony released publicly, saying defendants are afraid of being exposed for putting up a weak case. The videotapes belong to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and lawyers for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the group sponsoring the case, have argued that they should be a matter of public record. The lawyers for the plaintiffs successfully argued their case and saw Proposition 8 overturned, which ended same-sex marriage in California. The case is now being appealed. Proponents of Proposition 8 have been seeking to keep the videotapes from being released. The Proponents have been utterly unable to explain why the public should be barred from seeing and hearing for themselves what happened in a public trial, said lawyer Theodore Boutrous in a release from the organization. The real reason ... is [they] do not want the world to see the powerful evidence we submitted showing that Proposition 8 atly violates the Constitution and the extraordinarily weak case that they put on trying to defend this discriminatory law.

Kressley, Chaz Bono tapped for DWTS

LOS ANGELES One of Americas most popular TV shows, Dancing With The Stars, will welcome next year the transgender son of Sonny Bono and gay icon Cher. The show announced that Chaz Bono will be among the stars dancing this year. Bono will also be joined by former Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Carson Kressley for the 13th season of the show. With both gay and transgender contestants represented on this upcoming season, ABC will send viewers a strong message about the diversity within the LGBT community, said Herndon Graddick, senior of director of programs for media watchdog group, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture.

Gay staffers take key roles in Obama campaign

From nance to digital initiatives, supporters working to win second term
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
(Editors note: This is the rst of a two-part series.)

Engaging in tasks from fundraising to digital initiatives to public outreach, President Obamas re-election campaign staff is already hard at work helping to secure a second term in the White House and many members of the LGBT community have high-prole roles in that effort. The Washington Blade interviewed four gay and lesbian staffers who are working to re-elect Obama from the campaign headquarters in Chicago. This article is the rst in a two-part series and features interviews with two of the campaign workers: Rufus Gifford, the nance director, and Teddy Goff, the digital director. For Gifford, whos gay, seeing Obama serve another two years in ofce is important because he believes the administration so far has been two of the most productive years in American history. Ive been on board with the campaign in one way shape or form since January 2007 nearly from the moment I met Sen. Obama, Gifford said. I was certainly a believer in him and his message and his politics, etc. So, I do believe that the last two years have been two of the very most productive years in American history. In my mind, truly, if we can get four more, think of how much more we can accomplish. Gifford said Obamas accomplishments for the LGBT community most notably Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal are obviously very, very personally important to him. Still, Gifford also counts among the presidents victories passage of the economic stimulus plan and health care reform as well as ratication of the START Treaty, a nuclear-arms reduction agreement. As nance director, Gifford overseas the funds raised for both the Obama campaign as well as a joint committee that raises funds between the campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Its similar to his role as nance director of the DNC, which he occupied immediately before joining the Obama campaign, and his role in raising money for Obama in California during the 2008 campaign. Every morning I start the day with a 9 a.m. senior staff meeting with the campaign leadership, Gifford said. I am a huge believer that nance should never be siloed within a campaign. Gifford said he believes the campaign will be stronger and raise more money if hes talking to the directors of the eld department, the digital department, the tech department and the communications department.

PRESIDENT OBAMAs campaign staff includes several high-prole gay members.

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

From our standpoint, 2011 is really a building year for us, Gifford said. This is a time where we can really explore some new opportunities, and we dont in any way believe that this campaign is going to be like the 2008 campaign. So weve got to take the next step and develop new, interesting and modern ways to raise money from the millions of supporters out there who are interested in participating. In the second quarter, fundraising for the Obama campaign beat expectations. Obama raised more than $86 million for his re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which far outpaced Republican candidates seeking to oust him from the White House. The third quarter numbers are yet to be made public, but the campaign is setting its sights lower. Media reports state that the campaign is expecting to rake in less cash because the president had to cancel fundraisers to attend debt ceiling negotiations with congressional leaders. Gifford said the campaign is very happy about the money that it raised during the second quarter, but the earnings over the summer have been a mixed bag. Were going into Labor Day and in September we have a ... full schedule, Gifford said. And so we are not only where we should be at this point in any quarter, were cautiously optimistic about where were going to end up. One difference that Gifford faces working with the Obama campaign in 2012 as opposed to his work in 2008 is the fact that hes now separated from his partner, Jeremy Bernard, who serves as the White House social secretary.

In 2008, Gifford and Bernard were featured in numerous media outlets as a gay power couple and were named in Out magazines listing of the Top 50 power gays. Gifford declined to comment on his separation from Bernard, but conrmed the couple split in 2009. Giffords current partner resides in D.C. While Gifford manages fundraising for the Obama campaign, another gay member of the presidents re-election team, Goff, handles digital outreach efforts. As digital director, Goff runs Internet communications for the campaign, which includes outreach via e-mail or social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Our job in the digital department is to talk to millions of Twitter followers, millions of e-mail subscribers, millions of Facebook fans everyday, and thats a viewpoint that I think is helpful even in helping shape and inform broader discussions about how we talk to people and how we build, Goff said. Goff, whos 26 and gay, comes to the Obama campaign after his most immediate position working with Blue State Digital, a digital agency in New York. In 2008, Goff ran digital programs at the state level for the Obama campaign. Goffs commitment to see Obama re-elected stems from the presidents record over the course of two-and-a-half years in ofce, which Goff said is without parallel in my lifetime or even my parents lifetime. Im not just talking about LGBT issues, and on that, I think hes been extraordinary, Goff said. But on other stuff that is of concern to me and to members of both the LGBT community and the country at large

on health care, on jobs, on everything else hes done. So for me, hes every bit as inspiring and compelling a gure as I ever thought he was. The main priority for 2011, Goff said, is making sure existing Obama supporters have avenues to make their voices heard. Campaign-wise, particularly for 2011, everybody is very invested in reconnecting and re-engaging with supporters from the whole time that hes been a public gure so those who there with us in 07 and 08 who have been less engaged with us in the last couple years; those who were there with us in 07 and 08 who have been just as engaged in the last couple years; and those who just joined in the last couple years, Goff said. Whats the best online platform for the Obama campaign to connect with its supporters? Goff said everybodys different in the way they want to interact. There may be one person who wants to hear from us via e-mail, and another person who wants to hear from us on Twitter, but our point of view is that isnt so much what matters, Goff said. Most things come and go. This time, four years ago, Myspace was a really big deal. Now people arent talking about that so much anymore. The perspective that we try to bring to it is whats the basic content thats going to engage people, how can we shape a relationship thats going to make them feel engaged and feel like a part of the family. But the ght to re-elect Obama in 2012 could be more of a challenge than it was making sure he won the White House in 2008. Recent polls have placed Obamas

Apple CEO urged to come out as gay

Cook now leading worlds most valuable company
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
LGBT advocates are urging the new head of Apple, Inc., to make his sexual orientation public amid media reports asserting that hes gay. Tim Cook last week became CEO of the $337 billion company which weeks ago overtook Exxon-Mobile Corp. to become the worlds most valuable business after former CEO Steve Jobs resigned from his position. Justin Nelson, president of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, said Cooks act of coming out would help increase what he called the dramatic underrepresentation of openly LGBT people as leaders in the business world. What an enormous thing it would be to have an openly LGBT person leading not only a Fortune 500, but a Fortune 50 company, Nelson said. Theres severe underrepresentation of LGBT people on boards of directors of Fortune 500 companies, and I think this would send a very serious message that LGBT people should be at that table, they should be in those board rooms. If Cook came out as gay, Nelson said the act could encourage senior executives at other businesses to come out as well and allow for the consideration of more openly LGBT people for board positions at Fortune 500 companies. Nelson said he isnt in favor of outing closeted LGBT individuals other than those who actively work against LGBT equality but noted Cooks sexual orientation is apparently an open secret and predicted that we probably will hear from him in the not too distant future on this particular issue. The main source of information about Cooks sexual orientation is a report from Gawker in January citing anonymous sources asserting the new CEO identies as gay. After Cook was proled as a lifelong bachelor and intensely private elsewhere, we wondered if he might be gay, Gawker reports. Weve since heard from two well-placed sources that this is indeed the case, and it sounds like Cooks sexual orientation has been the topic of at least some discussion within the company. According to Gawker, one source was told Apple executives would support Cook if he publicly stated his sexual orientation and even would encourage him to make it public as he takes leadership of the company but added concerns persist about whether Cooks coming out would affect the perception of the Apple brand. Apple, Inc., didnt respond to the Washington Blades request for comment on the Gawker report or the sexual orientation of its new CEO. Denis Dison, spokesperson for the Gay & Victory Fund, said a public declaration from Cook about his sexual orientation would have a positive impact on the larger LGBT community because it would encourage his straight colleagues and others to pay attention to LGBT issues. If he is gay and decides to come out and be leading a company that is as prestigious and large and powerful as Apple is, I think that is a net-plus for the LGBT community, Dison said. If Cook remained silent about his sexual orientation, Dison said he imagines the new CEO would continue to face pressure to come out as gay because of his public presence. There are those in the public eye who are said to be gay or known to be gay who dont talk about it ever, Dison said. Whether or not thats considered to be in the closet or just folks who dont want to discuss it publicly, it doesnt necessarily help the LGBT community or help their fellow LGBT Americans if they wont talk openly and naturally about their lives. Cook has big shoes to ll after taking the reins of Apple from Jobs, who co-founded the company in 1985 at the age of 21. Jobs was later ousted by the board, but returned when the company was close to bankruptcy 12 years later and led the company to become the juggernaut it is today.

The rst test for Cook will likely come with the debut of iPhone 5 an update to Apples popular mobile phone which is set to hit stores in the fall. Apple, Inc., is known for being an LGBT friendly company both in terms of its product appeal to the LGBT community as well as its treatment of LGBT workers. In its most recent Corporate Equality Index, the Human Rights Campaign awarded the company a perfect score of 100. Apple has non-discrimination protections for workers based on sexual orientation and gender identity and provides health benets for LGBT workers in domestic partnerships.

Federal funds used to support anti-gay efforts

$2.2 million aided Iowa groups marriage campaign
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to directly respond Monday to a recent media report revealing that $2.2 million in federal money that had gone to an Iowa group aided in its efforts to undo marriage equality in the state. In response to a question from the Washington Blade, Carney said he was unaware of the Associated Press report about the issue and declined to say whether the Obama administration has a problem with federal resources being used for that purpose. I wasnt aware of that, Carney said. Ill have to take that question. Carney also demurred when asked about the idea of President Obama issuing an executive order that would bar the use of federal funds for discriminatory efforts against LGBT Americans as a means to address the issue. I dont have any I mean, youre asking a hypothetical about an executive order that doesnt exist, Carney said. Last week, AP reported that $2.2 million in a federal grant received by the group now known as the Family Leader between 2006 and 2010 for marriage counseling purposes also helped pay some operational expenses while the organization was leading a campaign against same-sex marriage. The information was found through grant documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. The grant money reportedly helped the group then known as the Iowa Family Policy Center provide marriage counseling and education for hundreds of state residents. But the grant money also contributed to the salaries of ve employees, rent, telephone, Internet and other expenses while the group was ghting same-sex marriage in Iowa. The AP also quotes an anonymous University of Iowa researcher who was a consultant on the grant as saying the group declined to provide same-sex couples education and counseling with the funds. After the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, the Family Leader was vocal in opposition to gay nuptials. The group wanted to block the ruling from taking effect and called on the state legislature to amend Iowas constitution to bar same-sex marriage. The group supported last year in the Republican race for governor Bob Vander Plaats, who vowed to sign an executive order to overturn the marriage ruling. After losing to current Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad in the GOP primary, Vander Plaats led the campaign in 2010 that successfully ousted via referendum three of the justices who ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. The Family Leader didnt immediately respond to the Washington Blades request for comment on the AP reporting or whether the organization believes efforts against same-sex marriage were an appropriate use of the grant. According to AP, the Department of Health & Human Services ofcials approved the grant budget, and theres no indication the costs violated federal guidelines. The information that $2.2 million in federal money went to the Family Leader isnt new. Reporter Andy Kopsa of the Washington Independent reported in April that the group received this money through the U.S. Healthy Marriage Demonstration Fund as part of a total of more than $3 million in grants. But the AP report conrms that these funds aided efforts against same-sex marriage in Iowa and offers details on initiatives and employees working on that campaign who received money as a result of this grant. Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, criticized the use of federal money to rescind marriage rights in Iowa. This appears to be an outrageous abuse of taxpayer money, in which funding intended to help support married couples was diverted into an attack on married couples, discrimination against some married couples, and a partisan political agenda that is anything but charitable, Wolfson said. Richard Sorian, assistant secretary for public affairs at HHS, said the Family Leader received its ve-year grant in 2006 under a 2005 law signed by former President George W. Bush. But after President Obama took ofce in 2009, Sorian said the organization declined the fth year of its grant citing restraints under the Obama administration without identifying any restraint in particular. The key fact is theyre no longer a grantee and they pulled out of program after we began to review each grantee, Sorian said. It wasnt just that grantee, all grantees were on an active-basis review to make sure that they were doing what they had asked for funds to do. Because the organization is no longer a grantee, Sorian said the administration is unable to investigate the Family Leader for its use of federal funds.

ALERT: Find out about medicines that should NOT be taken with REYATAZ (atazanavir sulfate). Read the section What important information should I know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines? Read the Patient Information that comes with REYATAZ before you start using it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet provides a summary about REYATAZ and does not include everything there is to know about your medicine. This information does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. What is REYATAZ? REYATAZ is a prescription medicine used with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people 6 years of age and older who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). REYATAZ is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV infection destroys CD4+ (T) cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps fight infection. After a large number of (T) cells are destroyed, AIDS develops. REYATAZ helps to block HIV protease, an enzyme that is needed for the HIV virus to multiply. REYATAZ may lower the amount of HIV in your blood, help your body keep its supply of CD4+ (T) cells, and reduce the risk of death and illness associated with HIV. Does REYATAZ cure HIV or AIDS? REYATAZ does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. At present there is no cure for HIV infection. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly while taking REYATAZ. REYATAZ does not lower your chance of passing HIV to other people through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. For your health and the health of others, it is important to always practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Never use or share dirty needles. Who should not take REYATAZ? Do not take REYATAZ if you: are taking certain medicines. (See What important information should I know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines?) Serious life-threatening side effects or death may happen. Before you take REYATAZ, tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking or planning to take. These include other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. are allergic to REYATAZ or to any of its ingredients. The active ingredient is atazanavir sulfate. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in REYATAZ. Tell your healthcare provider if you think you have had an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients. What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take REYATAZ? Tell your healthcare provider: If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. REYATAZ use during pregnancy has not been associated with an increase in birth defects. Pregnant women have experienced serious side effects when taking REYATAZ with other HIV medicines called nucleoside analogues. You and your healthcare provider will need to decide if REYATAZ is right for you. If you use REYATAZ while you are pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. After your baby is born, tell your healthcare provider if your babys skin or the white part of his/her eyes turns yellow. If you are breast-feeding. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive because of the chance of passing HIV to your baby. Also, it is not known if REYATAZ can pass into your breast milk and if it can harm your baby. If you are a woman who has or will have a baby, talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby. If you have liver problems or are infected with the hepatitis B or C virus. The cause and long-term health effects of these conditions are not known at this time. immune reconstitution syndrome. In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS) and a history of opportunistic infection, signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment, including REYATAZ, is started. Other common side effects of REYATAZ taken with other anti-HIV medicines include nausea; headache; stomach pain; vomiting; diarrhea; depression; fever; dizziness; trouble sleeping; numbness, tingling, or burning of hands or feet; and muscle pain. Gallbladder disorders (which may include gallstones and gallbladder inflammation) have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ. What important information should I know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines? Do not take REYATAZ if you take the following medicines (not all brands may be listed; tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take). REYATAZ may cause serious, life-threatening side effects or death when used with these medicines. D.C. cop faces hearing in shooting of trans women

serious but non-life threatening wounds, according to police and witnesses. A police afdavit led in court says the victims and on-duty D.C. police ofcers, who were in the area when the shooting took place, reported seeing Furr standing on the hood of the car in which the victims were sitting. Two of the victims said he red his gun at them through the car windshield, striking them as they screamed in horror, according to transgender activists who spoke with the victims. D.C. transgender activist Jeri Hughes said two of the trans women shot during the incident told her that police ofcers arriving on the scene handcuffed them and treated them like criminals instead of victims. Hughes and other LGBT activists said police appeared to have called in the departments Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit to assist in the case and quickly alerted LGBT activists through a police e-mail list used to communicate with the LGBT community. But Hughes said the report by the victims that ofcers handcuffed them conrmed yet again longstanding concerns within the transgender community that D.C. police are biased against the trans community. Ofcer Araz Alali, a police spokesperson, said Tuesday that the department was unaware of that allegation. We have not heard that the police handcuffed the complainants, he said, adding that the department was still investigating the case and more information could surface about such an allegation. The police afdavit says the incident began a few blocks away at a CVS drugstore at 400 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., when Furr approached one of the witnesses in the case and engaged the witness in conversation. It says another of the witnesses got into a verbal altercation with Furr before the two witnesses left the store. Transgender activists who spoke with at least two of the transgender women shot in the incident said the women told them Furr approached one of them during that initial encounter at or near the CVS store and expressed interest in having sex with her. Furr reportedly became angry when the women turned down his request, the activists who spoke with the two women said. The afdavit says that members of the group of three trans women and two male friends crossed paths with Furr minutes later on the street, when Furr made a comment to one of them while he was sitting in his car parked outside the CVS store. Another verbal altercation ensured, and during the argument, defendant Furr reached into the glove compartment of his vehicle and retrieved a dark-colored handgun and pointed it at witness 1 the afdavit says. It says witness 1 and witness 5, who are believed to be one of the trans women and her male friend, returned to the

CVS store and reported to an off-duty police ofcer working there as a security guard that Furr threatened them with a gun. According to the afdavit, witness 1 and 5 then met up with the other witnesses identied as the victims in the case and entered a car belonging to witness 1. While driving, witness 1 saw the white Cadillac driven by defendant Furr and followed the Cadillac in the hopes that it could again report defendant Furr for pointing a gun at it, the afdavit says. At some point, defendant Furr stopped his car and as witness 1 went to drive around defendant Furrs car, defendant Furr stepped out of his car with a gun pointed toward witness 1s vehicle, says the afdavit. Witness 1 ducked down in an attempt to avoid being shot, and then heard shots red and felt a jolt which he later realized was [his] car colliding with defendant Furrs car, the afdavit says. When witness 1 looked up [he] saw defendant Furr standing on top of the witnesses vehicle with a

handgun and ring shots into the vehicle. The afdavit says another of the victims identied as witness 4 reportedly heard the man who was shooting say, Ima kill all of you before he started shooting into the vehicle. Police said they suspended Furrs police powers at the time of his arrest pending an investigation by the departments Internal Affairs Division. Court records show Furr was charged with driving while intoxicated in a separate incident in 2004. Records show the U.S. Attorneys ofce dropped the charge after Furr completed a diversion program. Details of the diversion program couldnt be immediately obtained from court records, but such programs usually involve requiring a defendant to undergo counseling or alcohol treatment. About 70 people turned out for a rally at the site of the shooting last week, which was organized by T.H.E. and DCTC. Among those who spoke at the rally were D.C. Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) and Deputy Police Chief Diane

Groomes, who said she was appearing on behalf of Police Chief Cathy Lanier. DCTC member Elijah Edelman told the gathering that the shooting of at least two transgender women by an off-duty police ofcer was one of many attacks and assaults against trans women that have occurred in the past few months in D.C. So I think its fair to say a lot of us are really pissed off, he said. Its very, very frustrating. We had conversations with Chief Lanier over the past several weeks, over the past several years, and nothing changes nothing changes, Edelman said. So this is a moment in which we can nally say enough were not going to keep doing this. Other activists speaking at the rally, including D.C. Trans Coalition member Ruby Corado, praised the police handling of the latest incident. They said they were hopeful that police were nally carrying out a department policy for transgender related matters that was excellent on paper but had not been followed very often by rank and le ofcers.

Solmoneses tenure saw big wins, ght with trans community

Dana Perlman of Los Angeles. Joe Solmonese is an outstanding leader, said Anne Fay, who co-chairs the HRC Foundation board. While we will miss his extraordinary leadership, we enter this next phase, thanks to Joe, in the best place the organization has ever been. Not only has our community secured historic victories, but our membership is larger and more active than any time in our history, and our nancial health is secure even in these difcult economic times. HRC spokesperson Michael ColeSchwartz said the combined revenue for HRC and the HRC Foundation for the scal year ending March 31, 2011 was $39.8 million. He said the two groups have about 150 employees. Sources familiar with HRC have speculated that several LGBT movement leaders would likely emerge as candidates for Solmoneses replacement, including Chuck Wolfe, executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund; Brian Ellner, an HRC consultant who coordinated HRCs efforts to help pass New Yorks same-sex marriage law; Chad Grifn, head of the California-based organization that initiated the lawsuit to overturn Proposition 8; and Sean Maloney, one of former President Bill Clintons openly gay White House aides who later worked for former New York Gov. David Paterson. Solmonese has received mixed reviews by LGBT activists during his tenure as head of HRC, which began in 2005. Disagreements over his and HRCs policies and activities appear to reect divisions within the LGBT movement. Supporters and others familiar with the group say Solmonese has worked well in navigating HRC and its LGBT rights agenda during a hostile Bush administration and during a supportive Obama administration, using behindthe-scenes political skills to prod allies in Congress and the White House to move its agenda forward. Critics say he and HRC have been too closely aligned with the Democratic Party and Democratic congressional leaders, which they say have failed to adequately advance LGBT legislation, such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and LGBT-supportive immigration legislation while Democrats controlled the House of Representatives. The statement released by the HRC board co-chairs says that under Solmoneses leadership, HRC expanded its public outreach programs, including the start of its Healthcare Equality Index, which, among other things, assesses the sensitivity of hospitals in caring for LGBT people. HRC and the HRC foundation launched or expanded other important programs during Solmoneses tenure, the board statement says, in the area of outreach to religion and faith communities, schools programs promoting fair treatment of

LGBT youth, and a family and children initiative to open adoption agencies to LGBT parents. In the area of legislation, the board statement said Solmonese played a key role in steering HRCs opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment, a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. They also note that under his tenure, Congress passed a hate crimes law with protections for LGBT people and repealed the Dont Ask, Dont Tell law barring gays from serving openly in the military. The statement notes that during his tenure, the Obama administration put in place a number of administrative directives and policy changes favorable to LGBT people, including a policy banning discrimination against federal government workers based on gender identity. Dana Beyer, executive director of the transgender advocacy group Gender Rights Maryland and a former HRC board member, said Solmonese alienated many in the transgender community and in the LGBT community in general in 2007 when he declined to oppose a decision by House Democratic leaders to remove protections for transgender people from ENDA. Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a longtime supporter of LGBT rights, and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), whos gay, said they determined at the time that ENDA couldnt pass in the House if a transgender provision remained in the bill. The House passed a so-called gay only version of the bill that year over strong objections from a coalition of dozens of LGBT groups from across the country. Pelosi and Frank said they would introduce a separate bill with transgender protections at a later date, when support for such a bill could be lined up. Solmonese said it would have put HRC in an untenable position to oppose a major gay rights bill backed by longtime LGBT rights supporters in the House. The bill died when the Senate did not bring it up for a vote. Solmonese and HRC changed their position on the bill the following year,

saying the organization would no longer support ENDA without a provision protecting transgender people from job discrimination. But Beyer and other LGBT activists said HRCs earlier position left deep scars within the transgender community, which felt abandoned by HRC. Others have said the LGBT movement as a whole was divided over HRCs position, with many in the movement including D.C.s Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance and the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club supporting an incremental approach of passing a sexual orientation-only version of ENDA while continuing to push hard for adding a transgender provision as soon as possible. Those holding that view said they favored a fully inclusive ENDA but recognized such a bill could not pass at the time. Beyer said that in addition to the ENDA ap, many LGBT activists believe HRC is devoting too much of its resources to marriage equality, including the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, at the expense of other legislation, such as a transinclusive ENDA. Beyer argues that ENDA would help many more LGBT people than those interested in getting married. Many of us are hoping HRC will change its direction on some of these issues under a new president, she said. But the president is really nothing more than a reection of the board of directors, she said. If the board of directors doesnt want to change the direction of the organization, it doesnt matter who the next president is. Richard Socarides, president of the national LGBT advocacy group Equality Matters, said Solmonese has performed well in advancing the LGBT agenda. He has been there when some very important gains took place, he said. And I think he did a tremendous job building the organization. Socarides said he disagrees with some critics who say HRC failed to do enough to push ENDA or is placing too much emphasis on marriage equality. I dont think they can be blamed for

the failure to pass any particular piece of legislation just as they cant take all the credit for the legislation that has passed, he said. But what I have said before is that as an organization, they have not sufciently leveraged their power to bring about change more quickly, Socarides said. They are a key part of the Washington establishment but they seem to seek change within existing structures. They are very reluctant to rock the boat. Rick Rosendall, vice president of D.C.s Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, and Bob Summersgill, GLAAs former president, each said HRC under Solmoneses leadership has provided strong support for the efforts by D.C. activists in passing a same-sex marriage law. The two said Solmonese also arranged for HRC to devote considerable resources to ght efforts by members of Congress to attach anti-gay riders to the citys annual appropriations bill. Congress must approve the citys annual budget under the citys limited home rule charter. Summersgill and Rosendall noted that HRC, among other things, helped to line up support to defeat proposals by Republican lawmakers to ban same-sex couples from adopting children in the city. Lateefah Williams, president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, said she, too, appreciated Solmoneses support for D.C.s marriage equality campaign, noting that he directed HRC to provide a full-time eld organizer to help local activists build support in the community for the samesex marriage bill. Williams said she also shares the views of some that HRC should broaden its support for transgender rights initiatives as well as efforts to support programs aimed at minorities within the LGBT community, such as blacks and Latinos, and youth. I wish Joe well, she said. News of Solmoneses departure was rst reported by the blog Pams House Blend last week. The blog cited unnamed sources as saying his departure may be part of a sweeping staff shakeup initiated by the HRC board and that news of his leaving came about under less than amicable circumstances. Other sources familiar with HRC told the Blade that account was inaccurate. One source familiar with the group characterized as complete ction claims of a staff shakeup as well as claims by some that HRC may already have lined up a successor for Solmonese. This is about as normal and straight forward as it gets, said the source. Hes giving them six months advance notice. Theyre going to launch a replacement process. The organization will go through that and come out with a successor. In a letter to HRC volunteers across the country, Solmonese discussed the timing of his decision to leave the group.

approval rating at its lowest point during the course of his term. A few weeks ago, Gallup found that Obamas approval rating was at 39 percent, marking the rst time his approval rating had dipped below 40 percent. Gifford said hes not in a position to

say whether a win for Obama will be more challenging than it was in 2008, but asserted supporters will push on in the effort to claim victory. Its just a difcult question to answer before we know exactly what the Republican eld is going to look like, Gifford said. I will tell you this, though. I have every anticipation that this is

going to be an outrageously competitive election. No one in this building is under the impression that this is going to be easy. In fact, we think this is going to be hard and its going to be hard all the way up to Nov. 6, 2012. Similarly, Goff said he doesnt know if winning the White House will be more challenging for Obama in 2012, but said

WA M U .O R G

he expects the commitment of campaign workers would lead the president to victory. You can come on a day when the news looks awful and come on a day when the news looks good, and people would not detect a difference, Goff said. From my perspective, the time for political projections is a long way off, and even then itll be around. We just got to our job, and if we do our job, we should be able to be successful. The support that Obama will receive from the LGBT community in his reelection efforts remains to be seen. Signicant milestones in LGBT rights occurred under his watch most notably the passage of hate crimes legislation and repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Obama also received praise earlier this year for dropping the administrations legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act in court. But other actions sought by the LGBT community remain outstanding such as the enactment of employment protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The presidents lack of support for same-sex marriage riles some in the LGBT community as the ght to win marriage equality continues throughout the states. Gifford said hed tell anyone who says Obama hasnt done enough on LGBT issues during his rst term in ofce that you cannot make the argument that this is not the most pro-gay administration in history. If you look at just sort of what we have gotten done, I truly believe that the progress that weve made over the course of the last two years is very, very, very signicant, Gifford said. I would be hard pressed to hear from the community really what they want to have happened that hasnt happened yet. Goff said he doesnt believe the presidents lack of support for marriage equality will hamper his appeal to the LGBT community in his bid for re-election. Most of the LGBT people I know support marriage, Goff said. Not a single LGBT person doesnt support President Obama because of his position on it. He has done a huge amount. He has moved us forward. In a second term, hes going to continue to move us forward. And I think that matters a lot more to people than where he stands on the marriage issue. How can other LGBT people help who want to see Obama re-elected in 2012? Goff said those who are interested should check out the campaign website or participate in an on-the-ground eld program that is being built in communities across the country. There are things for people who want to be involved only or primarily in LGBT issues, Goff said. We should have LGBT people do that, but also hope that LGBT people will get involved in the broad program and organize their community just like anybody else.

HRC President JOE SOLMONESE will step down when his contract expires in March.
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

The Human Rights Campaign announced this week that Joe Solmonese would step down in March as president after nearly seven years at the helm of the nations largest LGBT advocacy organization. Running HRC is a relatively thankless job: legislative victories cant come fast enough to satisfy critics and God help you if you throw a cocktail party for inside-the-Beltway elitists. Solmonese will be most remembered for presiding over HRC during a period when we saw repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and passage of an expanded federal hate crimes law that includes sexual orientation and gender identity. But his tenure was also marked by controversy, when in 2007, a bruising ght over the Employment Non-Discrimination Act threatened to tear HRC apart. Solmonese and many others in the movement agonized over the question of whether to support an ENDA that was stripped of its gender identity provision. Ultimately, HRC punted and neither supported nor opposed the bill, which died after a painfully divisive debate in Congress. The lasting impact of that episode: any version of ENDA that omits gender identity/expression is dead in the water. Four years after that bruising debate, ENDA remains a dream perhaps permanently. The next HRC leader should work to further repair and strengthen relations with the transgender community, which is most impacted by employment discrimination. Many grassroots activists remain deeply suspicious of HRC, though some of their criticisms are unfair. The organization has been attacked for its spending, salaries, new headquarters building and coziness with the administration. But the truth is that our opponents on the right are far better funded than the so-called LGBT movement. The vast majority of LGBT people dont donate to HRC or any other rights group ghting on their behalf. HRC claims 1,000,000 members under Solmoneses tenure, but that number is ludicrous and laughably inated. If only there were a million people paying annual dues to a national LGBT rights group. If we are ever to pass ENDA, repeal DOMA, protect the rights of bi-national

The next HRC president must forge inroads with Republicans. As weve seen under House Speaker John Boehner, our legislative ghts cannot advance as an occasional Democratic Party pet cause.
same-sex couples and convince the Republican Party to cease its attacks on us, we will need to pay competitive salaries to our lobbyists and leaders. The HRC headquarters was expensive, but a smart, longterm investment. As for being cozy with the administration, I prefer the White House gates remain open to LGBT voices. Some of us too easily forget the Bush years, when even our gay journalists were thrown out of the White House. The Obama era has delivered on the promise of change to our community and while we still need grassroots activists pushing for more progress, so too we need lobbyists on the inside. One problem that continues to hamper our visibility is that we lack a stable of slick and condent TV-ready commentators to take on the endless voices of bigotry on the right. Sure, Solmonese made a few appearances on Hardball during the Dont Ask debate, but the next HRC president should be more aggressive in defending our community in public forums and on TV. The void created by that reluctance leads to the LGBT community being represented by gay actors, musicians and sex advice columnists surely we can do better. The next HRC president should also work to combat the impression of tone deafness. At a time of national recession when so many Americans, including LGBT people who are disproportionately impacted by job discrimination, are out of work, Solmonese was proled by Washington Life magazine, which dubbed him the elegant activist, who favors designers Ann Demeulemeester, Billy Reid and Dolce and Gabbana. While actual activists like Dan Choi were being arrested at the White House, Solmonese was staging cheesy photo ops nearby with Kathy Grifn for her reality TV show. Enough with the star fuckery already. HRC shouldnt be a reality TV platform or a fashion house. Also as we look to HRCs future, the next president must make it a priority to forge inroads with Republicans. As weve seen under House Speaker John Boehner, our legislative ghts cannot advance as an occasional Democratic Party pet cause. The Democrats have proven again and again the ckleness of their support, nearly squandering majorities in both houses of Congress during Obamas rst two years in ofce. The Republicans are worse, but we havent really tried to win them over. Writing off Republicans all these years has stymied the movement and delayed our progress. The GOP reads the same polls we do its future leaders understand that anti-LGBT prejudice doesnt resonate with younger voters and it already turns off independents. So lets get out of the DNCs back pocket and engage with the rest of the political universe. In all, Solmonese was a vast improvement over his predecessor, Cheryl Jacques. HRC under his leadership is stable, more respected in Washington and has had a place at the table during Obamas term. His departure enables HRC to chart a new course as we head into 2012, but Solmonese righted the ship and HRC is better poised to play a serious role in the national debate today than when he took over.

September is here and another summer draws to a close. This has been an exciting one with interesting headlines written every day. On the political landscape since Memorial Day, Republican candidates for president have managed to outdo each other in saying inane things. All except Jon Huntsman, Jr., are bragging about who has a better way to deny civil and human rights to the LGBT community. The presidents approval ratings have plunged and Standard and Poors downgraded U.S. credit based partly on our dysfunctional Congress. Financial instability has caused the stock market to gyrate wildly and many people are again thinking of putting off their retirement, at least those still working. In Rehoboth Beach, D.C.s gay summer getaway, a gay candidate for mayor lost but gay businessman Mark Hunker won a seat on the Commission. In Virginia, we celebrated the Democratic primary victory of Del. Adam Ebbin, who will most certainly be the rst

you spin that result depends on which party you support. Former Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold has said he will not try to reclaim his seat, leaving the primary eld open for Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.). This will be a long, arduous and expensive campaign. Baldwin has a good shot at being the rst out lesbian elected to the United States Senate. She would join other still closeted members of the LGBT community in that esteemed body and maybe give some of them the courage to come out. We were also treated, if that is the appropriate word, to online semi-nude pictures of a congressman who was forced to resign and the announcement that the House of Representatives is ending its page program, well respected despite some problems with errant congressmen. We saw the passage of marriage equality in New York and the political realities of that event forcing the hand of Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley to push marriage equality

Mall in Washington, D.C. While the ofcial dedication was rained out we were reminded that while we have come a long way in securing the rights of African Americans there is still a long way to go in that ght and in the ght for full civil and human rights for the LGBT community. Jeffrey Richardson, director of the Mayors Ofce of GLBT Affairs, organized an LGBT remembrance of MLK in the Rayburn HOB and each speaker reminded us that we need to rededicate ourselves to Kings ideals. Then just this week, the Human Rights Campaign announced the resignation of Joe Solmonese and a planned search for a new president. While Solmoneses tenure is viewed differently by many I think that all-in-all we will look back at the Solmonese era at HRC as a success for both the organization and our community. Being president of HRC is not a job for the weak of heart. The weather kept making headlines as well. First it was hot, hot, hot and

Rehoboth Beach. Now we wait for the locusts. Some thought Pat Robertson or some other evangelical minister would say it was all retribution for gaining LGBT rights, instead some dumb rabbi in New York said it. Maybe Robertsons not speaking up because the epicenter of the earthquake was in Eric Cantors (R-Va.) district, and he wouldnt want to blame a Republican. For many gays and lesbians on the East Coast, the last big weekend of the summer, Labor Day, will be spent in Provincetown, Fire Island or Rehoboth Beach. My choice is Rehoboth, weather permitting, with plenty of time spent on the Aqua deck. Rehoboth this summer saw the opening of a new Universal Gear store and toward the end of summer the opening of JAM, a new bistro from the owners of Eden. So as summer 2011 comes to a close, its time to get out your checkbooks, as both the campaign and fundraising seasons are moving into full gear.

Re: Off-duty D.C. cop arrested for shooting trans women (news, Aug. 27) For those who do not think that attacking a trans person should be a hate crime, this is a good example of why it should. Not only are we targeted more than any other visible minority, but even those tasked with protecting us hold serious bias, and even malice, against us. In 2010 there were 27 murders reported as hate crimes against the LGBT community (in the U.S.). Twelve were trans women, even though we are a very small part of the LGBT community. Trans women are 30 times more likely to do jail time than a non-trans woman, and when we are awaiting trial (and presumed innocent) we are placed in male prisons, where more often than not we are verbally, physically and sexually abused by both staff and inmates. In most states we have no protections at all. When we ask for them (gender

identity and expression) we are told we dont need them, or that we will start raping little girls in the bathroom (a ridiculous example of bias against us). Heather Scott Lets not indict the entire Metropolitan Police Department of overwhelmingly professional and good cops, many of whom are LGBT. And Chief Lanier ought not be demonized either. Cathy Lanier is a good person. She is no trans phobe, and she is no homophobe. She is in fact, a very good cop. But Lanier is a failed police chief with respect to this issue. It remains to be seen whether she can turn this horrible, unintended, policy-driven situation around. We should also demand that Mayor Gray and Council member Phil Mendelson and other Council members fulll their promises to restore GLLUs core unit to full strength. That means voting the directed funds to MPD for four additional GLLU-specic ofcers (with afrmative action for LGBT ofcers) to bring GLLUs

core unit back to full strength. At this point, Mayor Gray and the Council are just as responsible for correcting this situation as Chief Lanier. IMO, Lanier, let this situation get out of control within her command by not recognizing much earlier the unintended, broad-based INTERNAL consequences of slashing GLLUs core unit in half. But thats water under the bridge now. Lets stay focused on changing policy and adding GLLU core funds to MPDs budget. That will require very proactive LGBT pressure on Mayor Gray, and especially, the Council. Brian How dare some of the commenters here judge someone the way they are doing transgender? How dare someone say they are tired of listening about transgender mistreatment in the news? They are listening to this news because transgender folks are part of the community just like any other group. Sure, in the past you never listened to the term because

transgender [people] were oppressed to the point of not showing their faces in the daytime and only were hookers and showgirls. Well, Mr. Red Neck, times have changed and from now on you will read and listen to the word TRANSGENDER in the media and all over. It is sad that the capital of this country is where all this abuse is taking place. In regard to this case, does anyone think that the person maybe was at CVS, which is a pharmacy after all, because they were in pain or needed a medication or simply wanted a piece of candy? There is not a law in the books that says a person regardless of whats between their legs or how they may be dressed cant go into a place thats open 24 hours. Trans people arent gay or lesbian either (unless they wanted to be); trans women arent a sex object. Trans folks are a different group and whether you like it or not, you need to respect them. You dont have to love or like them but every human being deserves respect. Adela Cuba

A new World for Erasure

Gay-helmed pop legends out with new record, tour
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com
Its a great time to be an Erasure fan. Anticipation is high for the bands new album, Tomorrows World, slated for an Oct. 3 release. Its the dynamic synth-pop duos rst full-on album release since 2007. Band mates Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have been wowing audiences all summer on a world tour thats found them stopping off in Dublin, Berlin, Moscow, Rio, Mexico City and more. A U.S. leg began this week in Tampa. Theyre heading up through the South with stops scheduled for D.C.s 9:30 club Tuesday and Wednesday. Upcoming shows in Houston, Dallas and Portland are already sold out. The bands rst two albums, Wonderland and The Circus were re-released in elaborate three-disc special editions in July. When I Start To (Break it Down), the rst single from the new album, was released this week and features production by Frankmusik, whos also touring with the band and whose production credits include the Pet Shop Boys and Lady Gaga. A ve-track maxi with remixes drops in September. And the road trek has brought the band rave reviews. A July festival appearance inspired the Scotsman to gush that their huge catalog of hits has stood the test of time and that, it was impossible not to get carried away with the sheer joy of it all. Their local appearance with Cyndi Lauper on the 2007 True Colors Tour drew equal raves. Lead singer Andy Bell, whos gay (Clarke is straight), says the tour has been going amazingly well and that World is his favorite new Erasure album in a decade. During a rehearsal break in Tampa, he took

WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST PERSON TO TELL? I came out in my early 30s, about 20 years ago. It was hardest to tell my parents. WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO? Our friends Peter and Jack were together 40 years before Jack died 10 years ago. They created a life together lled with friends and beauty at a time when there was no support of any kind. They taught us to value being together. WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT? Ive been a parent for the past eight years. Whats a nightlife? DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING. In 2008, we were married in San Francisco at City Hall with a few close friends and our kids as our witnesses. It was a dream come true to be legally married within my own lifetime, surrounded by my kids. WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? Adoption. There are hundreds of kids right here in D.C. who need loving homes. If you have the capacity to love, you have the capacity to be a parent. WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME WOULD YOU CHANGE? The death of Dr. Martin Luther King. WHATS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE POP CULTURE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME? Obamas election night. Hope springs eternal. ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST? Dessert

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL WORLD? I believe how I live my life here and now in the physical world is what counts. WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT LEADERS? Dont stop until all families are recognized and appreciated, no matter what shape they come in. WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS HOT COALS FOR? My kids. WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? Gay men only die from HIV and lesbians die from breast cancer. Our community is deeply affected by many diseases. My close friend died this past year of a brain tumor. The father of another gay friend is undergoing treatment for lymphoma. I care about all these things. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT MOVIE? My middle school aged kids once suggested I dress in drag before my sons new girlfriend met the family. It was the perfect opportunity to show them The Birdcage. WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM? According to my 15-year-old daughter, it is being too nice. When walking together in public, I wave to her friends, her teachers and anyone else she points out. I tell her you can never be too nice in this world. She just rolls her eyes at me. WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU MOST COVET? Ive always wanted my own crown. If I complete a marathon, a triathlon and a century ride to benet the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I will earn a triple crown. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN AT 18? Life just gets better and better. WHY WASHINGTON? I came out in Washington almost two decades ago. Over 10 years ago, Patrick and I were able to register as domestic partners. After that we were able to jointly adopt our kids through D.C. It continues to be a place where we can actualize our dreams.

With the 50th birthday milestone looming, Dan McNeil knew it was time to get in shape. It started a year ago. One of the catalysts came from an unlikely place. The vice president of his company had lost a son to leukemia and sent out a challenge to create a team to walk in a benet in his memory. McNeil was just starting his new tness kick and decided to give it a try. Id lost 26 pounds through Weight Watchers so I thought, Why dont I try to run 26 miles? I didnt think I could do either, but I did, the 49-year-old Rochester, N.Y., native says. Like many, McNeil had seen cancer affect those he knew. He lost an aunt to lymphoma and a gay friend of his in Rehoboth died from a brain tumor. McNeil found a win-win he could continue getting in shape and helping a cause that was dear to him at the same time. Hes down to 165 pounds from a high of 208 and on Sept. 10, hell do the Nations Tri event for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help research in its mission to erase blood cancers. More information is at teamintraining.org or go to pages.teamintraining.org/ nca/nattri11/dmcneilw4l to sponsor McNeil. Hes met his goal but still accepting donations. He blogs about his training there, too. McNeil, a consultant who designs nancial software for the government at CGI, came to Washington about 20 years ago. He and his partner, Patrick, who also got on a tness kick and lost 70 pounds in six months, have been together 17 years and met at a Dignity (a gay-friendly Catholic group) gathering. They were married in 2008 in San Francisco and adopted two kids, then ages 7 and 9, in 2003. McNeil enjoys family time with his teens, 17-year-old Jaden and 15-year-old Taniya, cooking and training for endurance events in his free time. They have a beach house in Rehoboth and he also enjoys yoga. McNeil lives with his family on U Street.

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK POST OR TWEET? I bragged about completing a sprint triathlon in Luray, Va. I was pretty proud to survive the half-mile swim and to nish the race. Adam Gwon (left) and Matt Conner wrote new musicals on the boards now at Signature.

New voices, new works

Signature takes daring chance on two new musicals by local composers
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In a rather bold move, Signature Theatre, the Arlington-based company that is best known for doing pared down takes on fat Broadway hits, is opening its fall season with not one but two world premiere musicals in full production in rep. And whats more, the shows, The Boy Detective Fails and The Hollow, are the new works of talented rising composers Adam Gwon and Matt Conner respectively, and not the latest offerings from a pair of household names. As part of Signatures American Musical Voices Project: The Next Generation, Conner and Gwon (both gay) were each commissioned to develop full length musicals. Not long after receiving his commission, New York-based Gwon met with Eric Schaeffer (Signatures gay artistic director) to discuss project ideas: I was determined to do The Boy Detective Fails., Gwon says. When Id read it several years earlier, I knew instantly that it was something I had to make into a musical. Adapted from the same-titled popular novel by Joe Meno (also the musicals librettist), The Boy Detective Fails tells the story of famed kid sleuth Billy Argo who returns to his hometown after 10 years in a mental institution to solve the mystery of his sisters death. Hardly the stuff of the Nancy Drew series, but still Gwon says he approached his contemporary musical theater score in childlike way, trying to create a world full of wonder that is at times earnest and heartfelt and then changes to scary. Conners story is different. He says Schaeffer suggested he develop a chilling musical reinterpretation of Washington Irvings classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: My rst thought was I better re-read this, says Conner, 41. All I could remember was it had a guy without a head, but of course there a lot more including themes of country vs. city and what it likes to be an outsider. After selecting Hunter Foster (librettist and Broadway actor) to write the book for The Hollow, Conner concentrated on the shows score, which he describes as having a classical feel. It begins very structured and grounded and then soars off into my own ethereal world, he says. Conner successfully mined Irvings text for lyrics, nding both vivid imagery and beautifully expressed phrases. He also uses the townsfolks Dutch language to accentuate city boy, English speaker Ichabod Cranes otherness. Growing up on a dairy farm in Stephens City, Va., Conner learned to play piano by ear and became involved in his church choir. He attended the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester. After graduating he began doing musical theater in the D.C. area and eventually found an artistic home at Signature. As a boy in Baltimore, Gwon displayed an afnity for music. At 3, he was climbing up on the bench and plunking out tunes on the family piano. His parents smartly fostered his interest. I experienced music and theater on different tracks: drama club and after school classical piano lessons says Gwon, 31. Eventually it came together in college (NYUs undergraduate drama program) where he rst wrote music for student productions. Inspired by that experience and the work of a freshman year musical theater professor who unexpectedly died mid-semester, Gwon was hooked.

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN is in Baltimore this weekend for a benet.

Voila Olivia
Grease icon on music, cancer awareness and her career
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com
Olivia Newton-John is in Baltimore this weekend for Pink and Blue for Two, a cancer awareness benet focusing on early detection for breast and prostate cancer. Tickets were still available as of Blade press time Wednesday. Visit pinkandbluefortwo.com. Although running a few minutes late on her way back from a hair appointment in Jupiter, Fla., Newton-John apologizes profusely and took time with the Blade this week to talk about cancer, dance mixes of her old hits and rumored missing Xanadu outtakes. BLADE: So tell us about the event. NEWTON-JOHN: It was founded by my nephew and is designed to raise awareness for both prostate and breast cancer since there are similar statistic rates for both. I found my own lump myself and its kind of total common sense, but all women need to be doing their own self-examinations. This will come with a self-exam tool for women that magnies touch. It was his idea and we thought it was a great t between what he does and my work so its something were encouraging couples to do together. Im coming to co-host it. BLADE: Youve been an advocate for early detection, right? NEWTON-JOHN: Yes. I like to think of it like this. Which may sound simplistic, but it makes sense to me. If you have a toothache and you catch it early, its a lling. If you wait until later, it means a root canal. The earlier you nd cancer, before its metastasized, the better. Most lumps are non-malignant but its better to know and be aware. Some women tend to ignore stuff and sometimes things go away and sometimes they dont. You need to know your own breasts and whats normal for you. Breast cancer occurrences have actually increased in young women. Girls should start regular exams at 21. It should really be part of your health regime. BLADE: What advice would you give to someone whos just been diagnosed? NEWTON-JOHN: Its natural to freak out, but if you sense anything is wrong, go have a mammogram and a biopsy. I knew something was off with mine and luckily I had a surgeon who did a surgical biopsy. You have to trust your instincts. Also have someone you trust, a friend, a sister, your mother, someone who feels safe and close to you, to do all the phone calls for you to all the friends and family who will want to know. You can easily end up spending your whole time on the phone keeping everybody updated but nd someone else whos healthy who can handle that for you. BLADE: You were hilarious on Glee. How was that with Jane Lynch? NEWTON-JOHN: I love Jane Lynch. We had a wonderful time. It was a blast. BLADE: You started recording your own songs later in your career. Did you always write or did that come later? NEWTON-JOHN: I think I always wrote songs but I was surrounded by so many talented people early in my career, like Steve Kipner and John Farrar, who wrote Physical, that I felt kind of insecure to write or produce my own songs. We had maybe one on each album. But after I went through my cancer, especially with the album Gaia, I started to gain a little more condence and it started to make sense. BLADE: Do you enjoy songwriting or is it tedious and trying? NEWTON-JOHN: No, I love it. I love the process. Songs come out of me all the time. Id love to write every day if I had the time. BLADE: Some fans are asking about you doing a dance album. Have there been rumors about that or is that something you may consider? NEWTON-JOHN: Well this movie I just did, A Few Best Men, it will be out next year and John Farrar and I did a dance track for that. Also theyre doing some remixes with my nephew, Brett Goldsmith whos been writing songs for like 20 years. Hed write a demo, give it to someone else. I said, This sounds so good, why dont you keep them, but he kind of sat on these tracks for years. And I was busy doing other stuff, so we may be releasing some of that soon. The other thing were doing is remixes of the old songs, like we just did Magic. That was popular so we may do some more.

GOV The Capitoline Venus--on loan to the United States for the rst time--is one of the best-preserved and most famous masterpieces from Roman antiquity. It derives from the celebrated Aphrodite of Cnidos, created by the renowned classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles around 360 BC. Unearthed in Rome in the 1670s, the Capitoline Venus was given in 1752 by Pope Benedict XIV to the Capitoline Museum--the rst art museum in the world open to the general public--and was among the trophies that Napoleon Bonaparte seized after his invasion of Italy and took to Paris in 1797. The sculpture was returned in 1816 and quickly became a highlight for travelers in Europe, including Mark Twain, who was inspired to write the short story The Capitoline Venus.

The popular BLUE MOON bar and restaurant was boarded up last weekend in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which triggered an evacuation of Rehoboth Beach. The Moon, along with the rest of town, is reopened and ready for the busy Labor Day weekend.

After Irene, Rehoboth ready to party

By PETER SCHOTT
Rehoboth Beachs summer season unofcially ends around Labor Day and it goes out with a memorable bang this weekend with drag volleyball and the Sundance party. Begun as a fun game among friends in 1988, this years drag volleyball match is expected to attract more than 1,000 beach goers to the 23rd annual contest on Sunday at 1 p.m. The event, almost from the beginning, has been held on Poodle Beach at the south end of the boardwalk. The event attracted national attention this year when Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford joined several of the players on the beach in a segment shown on NBCs Today show, but as early as 1996 this event was featured in the USA Today as one of the fun things to see at the beach during Labor Day weekend. Even though the teams play the game in drag, they treat the game seriously. Stan Cole, a Rehoboth Beach resident, notes that the rst time he observed the event, I thought I would see drag queens playing volleyball, but I saw good volleyball players in drag. The two teams keep their outts secret from the public, but do share with each other what they will wear ever since there was a year in which both teams had the same theme. In the past, they have dressed as Hawaiian princesses, a wedding party, ight attendants and Lady Gagas multiple personalities, to name a few. In the early years, the players wore womens bathing suits, but in subsequent years the costumes became more elaborate. During the rst 10 years of competition, the costumers were designed by one of the players, Forrest Park, known affectionately as Flo. They have never had inclement weather hold them back, playing in cold and damp weather, even during a downpour. They canceled the match in 1990 when anti-gay sentiment, including anti-gay beatings at Poodle Beach and signs around town promoting the city as A family town forced the organizers to worry about how such an event might fuel further anti-gay sentiment. Over the years, organizers have been asked to turn the event into a fundraiser, but longtime participant Brent Minor says, this event is purely fun, and we do not want to get involved in making it too complicated and giving us too many obligations. The same year in which drag volleyball began, the Camp Rehoboth community center organized an event called Sundance to honor the 10th anniversary of Camp founders Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald. The rst event was a benet for Whitman-Walker Clinic and HERO, an AIDS care provider in Baltimore, and raised $6,400. Over the years other groups, such as the Sussex County AIDS Committee, have benetted from funds raised at this event but in recent years, the programs sponsored by Camp have been the primary beneciary. Each year since then, Camp has held the two-day event, the rst day being an auction with items donated by up to 400 individuals and businesses, and the second a dance. Originally held at the Strand Restaurant on Rehoboth Avenue, it moved to the Convention Center in 1994. The people at the Convention Center have been incredibly supportive all these years, Elkins says. Elkins also points out how proud Camp is that this was the rst gay-oriented event ever held at the Convention Center. This year the auction will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 7-10 p.m., and the dance, with music by Mark Thomas will be held the next day from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Numerous sponsors will be donating food and beverages. Also this weekend, the second annual 5K race to benet Camp Rehoboth will be held. It was postponed from last weekend due to Hurricane Irene. Registration for the 5K begins at 6 a.m. at Camp Rehoboth on Baltimore Avenue and the race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Visit camprehoboth.org for more information.

10 questions for Rennae Stubbs

Tennis legend reects on record-busting season
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Last month the Washington Kastles won the World Team Tennis (WTT) championships and capped off a perfect 16-0 season which included 14 wins in the regular season. This was the rst time since the league began in 1974 that a team has completed an undefeated season and gone on to win the championships. The bulk of the workload rested on the shoulders of Arina Rodionova, Leander Paes, Bobby Reynolds and Rennae Stubbs with an assist by Venus and Serena Williams. With the new Kastles Stadium at The Wharf and multiple sellout home matches, the season was truly magical. After the dust settled, Coach Murphy Jensen was named WTT 2011 Coach of the Year, Leander Paes was named WTT 2011 Male MVP and Arina Rodionova was named WTT 2011 Female Rookie of the Year. The nal home match of the season was also Night Out with the Kastles for the LGBT community. Kastles stalwart and LGBT sports hero Rennae Stubbs, a lesbian, sat down to reect on the winning season. BLADE: The media has assigned nicknames for the four mainstays of the team. Rodionova is Hot Rod. Paes is Scissorhands. Reynolds is The Closer. I have heard them refer to you as Stubbsy. Do you have a favorite nickname for yourself? STUBBS: I had not heard of Leander being called Scissorhands, I think Magician is probably more appropriate and as for me, Stubbsy has been my nickname for as long as I can remember, so I will stick with it. BLADE: Coach Murphy Jensen seems to embody the perfect mix of leadership, motivation and fun. Whats it like to play tennis for him? STUBBS: Murphy was and is the perfect combination of all those things. With an experienced team like Leander, myself and Bobby, there isnt too much tennis instruction or experience he needs to push on us, more just keeping us positive in tough moments and keeping us laughing. With Arina it was a matter of him keeping her positive and feeling good. BLADE: I love the camaraderie of the players on the court in World Team Tennis. Its like your entourage is out there with you. That must be a great change of pace from the WTA tour. Do you love it? STUBBS: I do love it. I have always loved being on a team and team tennis with its balance and equality make it the perfect team environment. Our team camaraderie was the reason behind our success this year. We always supported each other. There were nights when one of us might have had a rough set and we would always say, Hey I got your back tonight, and we always did. We cared for one another and our team owner Mark Ein kept stressing to us, keep supporting each other. We even started to get together in huddles in the middle of matches and end of matches and motivate each other. Saying things like, Everyone keep taking care of your own business and no matter what we support each other to the end. It was such a nice feeling in the end to continually support and motivate one another and get the job done. I was so proud of us. BLADE: Do you get to enjoy the sights and sounds of D.C. when the Kastles are in town, or is it all business? STUBBS: Unfortunately there isnt a lot of down time, but one Sunday I had off and I did as much site seeing as possible. I absolutely love the city, its architecture and parks are so beautiful. I tell all my friends, its a must on the list of cities to see, truly a favorite. BLADE: You and Leander Paes are two of the greatest doubles players of all time. Did you play together before partnering for the Kastles? STUBBS: Only once. It was back a few years ago at Wimbledon. We lost in the rst round, but it was a close match and it was a really tough draw. Most other times we have had regular partners and plus he wins without me. BLADE: You have competed for Australia in four consecutive Olympics. Are you gunning for a berth in 2012 in London? STUBBS: I will never say never, but that is a long way away and I just cant see myself going for another full year of the tour. It would be amazing to play an Olympics at Wimbledon, I wont lie, but like I said, thats seems like an eternity to me right now. BLADE: You picked up the microphone and gave a heartfelt thanks to the fans at the Kastles season nale. Did the new stadium and the sellout crowds motivate you or add to the pressure? STUBBS: Oh it motivated me for sure and I know the rest of the team felt the same way. The work that Mark Ein and his staff did to get that great new stadium up and running every night was amazing. Also the fans were the reason we won most of those matches this year, especially the tough ones. We have the best fans in the league and to not thank them after the season we had, would not have felt right, especially after going 14-0. I wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciated their support all season and I promised them we would bring the title back to D.C. BLADE: Was there a doubles team this year in WTT that rattled your cage? STUBBS: Not really. I am want to beat everyone I play and contribute as much as possible to the end score for our team. There might be a team or two that motivates a little more, but overall, a wins a win. The most nervous I was all season was when the rst lady Michelle Obama and her kids came. I was really motivated that night to play well, I wont lie. And they were so into it, it was great and they could not have been nicer. Only in D.C. BLADE: At the regular season nale at Kastles Stadium against the Philadelphia Freedoms, the heat index was 115 degrees. What do you think it smelled like inside of Topspin and Slices mascot uniforms? STUBBS: Oh gross! We all kept saying, Oh Topspin and Slice must being dying, we better keep an eye on them, in case they start fainting. Troopers. BLADE: Will you be back in 2012? STUBBS: I would love to come back, but thats again an eternity for me and I cant say if I will be playing. I think it might be the perfect way to exit into WTT retirement, but we will see. But I can guarantee you, no matter in what capacity, I will be back to D.C. and the Kastles whenever I can. Maybe we can get a visit to the White House. Thank for all the community support. I love you guys.

Bell calls new album duos best in a decade

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 23

SEPTEMBER 9 2011

time to talk with the Blade. [The tour] is fantastic really, he says in his impossible-to-resist British accent. In Lima, I couldnt believe it really. There was the whole shebang, with escorts and police and everything. We did 12 shows in six countries in 20 days. Wow. The set list doesnt change radically from night to night, though Erasure does throw in certain songs if they have particular relevance to a certain town. Like b-side When I Needed You, which charted in Argentina where they just performed an acoustic rendition of it. Its not always necessarily the stuff that charted, Bell says of the bands philosophies of set list construction. You kind of tend to choose the familiar stuff and the stuff you want to do. Its really like being a DJ in a way where youre trying to create something, a sort of theatrical soundscape where things from different albums lead nicely in and out of each other and there are a few nice surprises. When youre doing a show, its a bit like having a fairground attraction or a store. Bell is amused to see how audiences are different around the world. South American audiences often bring their babies to the show. Its very Catholic there so you see all these babies and little children. Theyre very passionate about it. Not really over the top, but they really want their baby to hear the music. Its not that they couldnt find a babysitter or something. Audiences there tend to skew younger too, he says. In America, theyre more vocal. But in Europe, the bands audiences arent as gay as one might imagine. Theres kind of a joke in the UK among some of my friends, he says. They say theres nothing more straight there than an Erasure fan. We do get some really, really hetero people there. So what gives? And why do aging dance divas continue having UK chart success when U.S. radio has put them out to pasture? Bell theorizes that the way people enjoy live music there has been a factor. The culture there for concerts is more a sense of people coming out and going on a sort of holiday where you have these huge outdoor spaces like club spaces and even at concerts you have a sort of a rave kind of sensibility that comes to the music. Its all outdoors. But theres also a European type of melody idea that seems to be

coming into American music more thats completely outside of hip-hop of course. Its almost like the Atlantic Ocean is getting bigger but the music is still moving back and forth. Things are getting more mixed up in the waves and its not so separate now. Bell, whos used his Erasure hiatuses to release solo albums the last few years (his last was Non-Stop in 2010), says its always a joy to reunite with Clarke. Part of the appeal is trading off being at the helm with collaboration, he says. A solo album is never done by yourself but when you go off and do your solo record, you can tell them more what to do. Vince wont do what I tell him to do. The solo work is more about being egoistical and being in control but also what I like about Erasure is not being in control. Vince kind of likes to guide things, but its a partnership. We choose the songs together, the playlist for the live shows and now with the new record, everything feels fresh again. Its like new laundry and you know that youre embarking on the world with this product. Which sounds so cold, but youve got this new record, something youve made together and youre going out on the road with it. You have to go out and work it just like everybody else. It feels really good, like youre part of a dynamic duo. Bell says he and Clarkes personal relationship is more a working partnership than a close friendship but, There is love there underneath and respect and admiration. When it comes to the crunch, you have to be there for the other person. A few other topics come up in our closing moments. In the cutthroat entertainment industry, does the cream eventually rise? Bell says he knows thousands of very talented people who dont necessarily get the break, but just as important as getting the break is the work that comes after it. You cant just be willy-nilly about it. Its really hard work so its something you have to be passionate about. Its not a nine-to-five job. Like everything, it takes real dedication. Being openly gay in pop music is getting easier, but by teeny-tiny increments. He says its still much easier for a straight artist, always has been. And as for the new record, Bell says hes very, very happy. I really love [2005s] Nightbird, but Id even put (Tomorrows World) a few notches above that. Im just really pleased with where we are, Vince and myself. There are lots of exciting things to come. Weve re-laid some foundation and its a good foundation.

A good dog is a tired dog

There may be more than an ounce of truth to the old adage, A good dog is a tired dog. Renowned animal behaviorist, Cesar Millan, and seasoned dog trainers like Kathy Diamond Davis, agree that to have a healthy, well-behaved dog, one must include a consistent amount of exercise in his or her pets lives. These specialists suggest that the average dog should receive at least 30-45 minutes of vigorous exercise daily, to not only maintain a proper weight, but also to calm its often overactive minds. Without regular, robust walks, dogs often exhibit negative habits around the house, such as chewing, scratching, digging or barking, when their pent up energy is being misdirected. Most of these destructive behaviors can simply be prevented by exhausting their excess energy through engaging in more aerobic activities, that also help their emotional states. People tend to overlook the causal roots of their dogs restlessness and worry that they might have adopted a misbehaving pup. But many of these undesirable behavioral patterns can be curbed by creating a routine that helps to socialize them while they burn those extra calories. Veterinarians also point out that brisk walks stave off health issues like canine diabetes while fortifying their bone and joint health and improving cardiovascular function, at the same time. But dont overdo it either. More aggressive types of exercise, such as jumping, can lead to severe structural damage to their knee joints, ligaments, etc. So, moderate activities are ideal for our four-legged friends. Dont ignore problems with your roof

By TOM DANIEL GEORGETGOWN, DUPONT CIRCLE & THROUGHOUT DC.
Though people often take the roof over their heads for granted, in todays volatile housing market it doesnt pay to ignore trouble with your roof. Shrug off the warning signs and you could be in for some sticker shock when it comes to xing problems with your roof. And there are warning signs. Is it just a roof, or should your roof be a thing of beauty that takes your structure decades into its future? R. Thomas Daniel Roong Company is a third generation, family-owned and operated business that provides honest roong assessments, estimates and quality craftsmanship. The company specializes in replacing, coating and repairing roofs of all types, especially the at and low slope roofs common on Capitol Hill, Georgetown and throughout Washington. Providing quality workmanship on distinct residential and commercial roofs, including tin, copper, slate, shingle and synthetic membrane roof systems such as EPDM and modied bitumen is what Daniel-family roofers have specialized in for more than 90 years. We take pride in working on the unusual roofs that can be found in historic Washington, such as slate turret roofs. Many of the slate turret roofs are the originals and more than 100-years-old. This article will provide an overview of these membrane roofs and their energy efcient capabilities. Membrane roofs are most commonly made from synthetic rubber (EPDM), thermoplastic (PVC and TPO) or modied bitumen (MB). EPDM roofs are single-ply membranes that have been in use in the U.S. since the 1960s. Usually black EPDM roofs are installed but they also come in white. EPDM is UV resistant and does not require an additional surfacing layer such as tar and gravel as with asphalt built-up roofs (aka slag roofs). These roofs can be applied either fully adhered, which uses adhesive to connect the rubber to the substrate of the roof, or mechanically fastened, which is attached by using manufacturers approved fasteners to the substrate. PVC roong has been in use in the U.S. since the early 1970s. PVC is a vinyl singleply roof membrane. The PVC membrane is installed on the roof by heat welding overlapping edges with an electrically powered heat welder or hand-held welder. These roofs also come in white. TPO roong, usually in white, is designed to combine the diversity of rubber with the performance of hot-air-weldable seams. This process creates a physical bond between two separate sheets of roong membrane effectively making them one piece and highly resistant to leaking. It is highly resistant to tears, impacts and punctures with good exibility to allow for building movement. Modied Bitumen (MB) is a roong membrane consisting of asphalt and plastic or rubber polymers and is considered an evolution of asphalt built-up roofing. MB is generally applied using a heat application process that melts the seams together to create a seal but sometimes a cold adhesive application system is used. MB is available with a white granulated surface for higher reectivity. Demand has increased for heat-reective and energy efcient roong systems

and all of the above systems can offer resistance to UV, ozone and chemical exposure. In addition, some of these products meet the new version of the California Energy Efciency Standards for Residential and Non-Residential buildings and some are also rated by the Cool Roong Rating Council (CRRC) which has a product rating program for evaluating and labeling the solar reectance and thermal emittance (radiative properties) of roong products. A cool roof reects and emits the suns energy as light back to the sky instead of allowing it to enter your building below as heat. There are numerous benets to having a cool roof including: Reducing utility bills associated with air conditioning resulting in energy savings typically of 10-30 percent; Lowering roof maintenance costs and extending the life of the roof and reducing solid waste; Mitigating your communitys Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIF);

Reducing green house gas emissions by conserving electricity therefore reducing CO2 from power plants; Mitigating the UHIF and reducing ambient air temperatures thereby improving air quality and smog. These developments in roong membrane systems and complimentary energy efciency and green qualities offer homeowners in need of a new roof an opportunity to have a quality roong system, reduce electricity usage and help the environment. Whenever possible we work to provide an alternative that is less expensive than an entirely new roof saving our customers money by extending the life of their current roof. However, if a customer does need a new roof we will recommend a replacement.
Tom Daniel is the owner and general manager of R. Thomas Daniel Roong and specializes in working on at and low slope roofs on Capitol Hill. Reach him at 202-569-1080, tom@rthomasdanielroong.com or via rthomasdanielroong.com.
