QUEANO, Chriszel Ann 2POL1 Answer: The dispute within the different Arab countries is not hidden to everyone

in the world; their fight for a better political ruler that affects almost every aspect of the economy. This fight could be likened to the fight on the past revolutions of some third world countries and, even, the Communist Republics of the USSR. This paper aims to analyze whether the revolution that is taking place in the Arab countries is the same when various third world countries and former communist republic of USSR transit to a democratize state. Is the Arab country on their way to the transition of a more democratic political regime? The importance to analyze this events could be traced back to the need of understanding and accurately asserting of the events to happen next within the Arab countries. By answering this problem, it will help us recognize the significant effect of revolution to democratization. This will study and discuss my analysis on the current happening about the socalled Arab Awakening and compare it from the yellow revolution and the 1989 revolutions that took place in former USSR countries. This will also discuss my personal analysis on the process of democratization of political regime after revolution happened from the third world countries, especially in the Philippines. This part of my paper would elaborate the similarities and differences of the revolutions that have happened in the Philippines, USSR, and the currently occuring Arab Awakening in order to answer the presented problem. To start with, the first question to be answered would be why did those revolutions began? Do the Peoples Power Revolution in EDSA, 1989 Revolutions, and

QUEANO, Chriszel Ann 2POL1 Arab Awakening took the same motivations and reasons to arise in the midst of the control of their government? Tunisia Revolution, the first country who started the wave of revolution in Arab countries, was catalysed by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi. Bouazizis act of setting himself to fire because of a maltreatment of government official became the
turning point and prompt the people that they have a kind of government thats not listening to their own people. Tunisian realized that they were just being used as means of profit for the corrupt officials. After being successful in their revolt, many Arab countries realized the

importance of their voice and followed Tunisia. Egypt is the second one to follow and had overthrown their President Hosni Mubarak ending his 30 years of dictatorship. People Power Revolution or Yellow Revolution, a good example of a succesful revolution on a Third world country, a non-violent revolution occured during the year 1983-1986 was triggered because of the violent and corrupt regime of the dictator
Ferdinand Marcos. Another that triggered the revolution in the Philippines was the assassination of Sen. Benigno Aquino Sr. Unarmed civilians, on the 22nd of February, had started to gather on EDSA and show their support for Cory Aquino. After four days

of nonstop silent protests and vigil prayers, the regime of dictator Marcos finally was brought down. Three years after the Philippines gained their democracy, the world was shocked
because of the uprising happening in the Eastern and Central Europe. The first country to revolt to show their disagreement with their current political regime is the Poland. It rooted when organization of laborers formed Solidarity. In my analysis, the Solidarity function to the laborers/workers as an alternative to communism. The group demanded political

pluralism and individual freedom. When Martial law was declared, and the Solidarity

QUEANO, Chriszel Ann 2POL1 was suspended, the union still continue to gain support and continue its business until it encourage the current president to have a round table discussion with Solidarity. This discussion led to many events that shaped political events in the country. Finally, the December 1990 elections marked the successful and peaceful transition of communist rule to democratic rule in Poland. As examples of events of revolution presented above, motivation and reasons why those revolution began are partly similar, but just introduced in a different manner. In my understanding, one principal reason is evident, there is oppression especially on the peoples voice because of the type of regime they have. Countries involved on Arab awakening were being ruled by dictators like what happened on the Philippines as my
example of a third world country. They are partly similar in terms of reasons and in terms of features. As presented above, dictatorship, maximum poverty or economic failure and government corruption are the main reasons and motivation why these revolution sprang.

And in terms of the features on how they showcase their revolution, they all have same characteristics, either civil disobedience or civil resistance. It can be concluded that the events on the Arab Awakening is similar to the democratization of many Third World countries with dictatorial regime and the former Communist Republics of the USSR. As how democratization is defined, it is the action of making something democratic, and to be identified as democratic, it should be something adapted to the benefit of people at large. The events we are currently witnessing in the Arab countries is an example of slow transition to democracy, people wants to expressed their opinion and be heard by thier government officials, not just to be dictated. The voice of the people is a determining tool if a country has balance and can be called democratic country.
