VITA Michael Masterman-Smith, Ph.D. (August 2011) I. Biographical Information: Address: Phone Number: E-mail: II.

Statement of Purpose: My initial background in psychology led me to health-related quality-of-life outcomes research on brain tumor survivors. From there I became intrigued by the disease and this led to my work investigating whether cancer stem (or tumor-initiating) cells were a neurodevelopmental phenomenon. The subsequent isolation of these cells from human pediatric brain tumors served as a fundamental breakthrough in tissue-derived cancer stem cell studies in solid tumors and the methods are now routinely used worldwide for culturing cancer stem cells from a number of human tissues including breast cancer, cervical cancer and melanoma. My doctoral work in the UCLA Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology was funded by the Adelson Medidal Research Foundation and a multi-million dollar grant from the National Cancer Institute as part of the founding of the NanoSystems Biology Cancer Center, where I applied my neuropharmacology and cell/molecular biology expertise to multidisciplinary projects involving systems engineering, biotechnology development, physics, materials science and systems biology. I have led teams to successfully complete complex clinically relevant multi-disciplinary academic-industrial bioengineering projects, resulting in multiple patent applications and the co-founding of 2 biotechnology companies.
