CONDO LIFESTYLE LEAVES MORE TIME FOR MUSKOKA
By Allan Cook
It used to be that there were only two ways to
own a piece of Muskoka; you owned a house and
lived here year-round, or you owned a cottage, and
tried to make it up as often as possible during the
seasons it was practical. As Muskoka became more
accessible over the years, those cottages were
upgraded and the families that owned them were
able to stay longer, even during the winter.
Eventually, a new way to own real estate in
Muskoka arrived in the 1980s; the resort condo-
minium. First seen at Deerhurst and Grandview
resorts, these were true vacation properties. Pur-
chasers could use them during certain times of the
year and could rent out the rest of the year
through the resort for the chance to make some
income from their investment.
In the late 1990s a new kind of condo began to
come to Muskoka, and Norm Goodfellow, con-
tractor on a number of resort condominium proj-
ects as well as buildings such as the Riverside Pub-
lic School in Huntsville and the Algonquin Park
Visitor Centre, became part of the area’s first wave
of residential condominium developments.

“We felt the area was lacking in quality multi-

residential buildings,” says Julie Maw of Goodfel-
low Construction.
Goodfellow Construction began exploring
opportunities by developing the Dairy Lane town-
houses in Huntsville.
“It was during this project that we became aware
of the need for apartment-style, no-stairs condo-
miniums, complete with elevator and under-
ground parking, which at the time was almost
nonexistent in Muskoka,” Maw says. Legends at the Falls in Bracebridge is a 40-unit condo development by Goodfellow.

Doug Grey of Muskoka D&M Corp., the
developer of the two Granite projects, sees it in
straight forward terms.
“It’s convenience,” he says. “No shovelling of

MAKE YOUR HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT
By Karen Wehrstein
As the cost of fossil fuels hits the
stratosphere and concern about the
environment grows, more and more
people in Muskoka are looking at
energy efficiency as an integral consid-
eration in how they build or renovate
their homes or cottages.
There are a number of energy effi-
ciency products on the market to con-
sider, but it can be difficult to make
sense of them all. This article aims to
shed light on some of these new tech-
nologies and provide a few tips from
the professionals to lower your energy
use, carbon footprints and bills.

Geothermal heating
Geothermal energy, which utilizes
renewable energy from the Earth, can
cut energy costs by 70 per cent.
The ground contains natural heat,
drawn both from the sun and the
molten core of the earth.
“The actual furnace looks the same
as any furnace, however a geothermal
furnace, instead of being hooked up to
a gas meter or propane tank or oil

The figures contained in the above chart of home and heating costs are based on the best information available on the subject; however, no two homes are alike. For this reason, it is very
difficult to provide an exact cost to heat a home with any energy source. The operating efficiency of your heating system, how well you maintain it, how energy efficient your home is and
your particular lifestyles will all affect the amount of energy used.
