From the Editor:

First off, I want to say welcome to Carbon Magazines premiere issue hopefully, the first of many. Carbon Magazine and [The Blog] were founded out of a stand still of what to do with my life once my time at college has ended. Ive always had a liking for fashion and an affinity for online journalism. The combination of these two elements formed into Carbon [The Blog] and with the introduction of this issue, Carbon Magazine. My goal for this magazine is to open the readers eyes to new trends and to entertain them with stories that are read just because. (Ahem, Kingsleys Corner!) I also hope to achieve a point of view that is unique to Carbon only a view that offers discovery of the latest trends in fashion but also show the reader how to tailor those trends to fit with their personal style. Lastly, I want to say thank you to my team of writers for all of their hard work. And I want to say thanks to you for picking up this issue and reading. Enjoy, Hilary Pendleton

The fishtail braid is the it braid of the season. Separate hair into two pieces. Begin drawing small clusters of hair from one side and cross it over to the opposite piece. Continue to alternate sides until the braid is the desired length. Secure with favorite hair tie. your

So you bought those crisp, white canvas flats and wore them everyday for a month and they looked great. But now theyre tarnished with scuff marks, dirt and who knows what else. Rather than tossing them out, why not re-finish them with glitter? A magical solution to the inevitable CARBON shows you how.
Supplies Needed:

Old pair of canvas sneakers Masking tape Newspaper Glittering and craft-foam glue Fine glitter any color Clear polyurethane spray Optional: Q-tips and Nail polish remover

1. Prepare:
Remove the laces and wash them. Chances are those are as dirty as the shoes. Using masking tape, tape off the rubber soles to protect them from glue. Next, stuff the inside of the shoes with newspaper this will hold the shape of the shoes as they dry.

2. Glue and Glitter: Begin to spread a thin (but even) layer of glue onto the canvas area of the shoe. You can use a paintbrush, but my glue came with a brush in the lid so I used that instead. Be generous with the glue and coat as large of an area as manageable, this way you will have less sections to blend. Sprinkle glitter over the glue-coated area and shake off excess. (I recommend working in a cardboard box to minimize messiness.) I chose to do a silver glitter but feel free to choose anything that tickles your fancy. Repeat this step over the same glued area about 2 more times to make sure youve really got it glittered. Repeat the aforementioned steps until the entire canvas area of both shoes are covered.

3. Clean Up: You may have noticed that your lace holes are covered with glue and glitter. Take an acetone dipped q-tip and use it to wipe off excess glue and glitter from the lace holes. Remove masking tape from soles. Let dry for about 15-20 minutes to let the glue set. (This might be a good time to go wash those laces!)

4. Finish Spray a layer or two of clear polyurethane to really set the glue in place. Let dry for 30 minutes. Re-lace your shoes with your clean laces. Youre ready to show off your re-vamped shoes to your friends!

Dating back to Greek and Roman cultures, tunics have been around for centuries. Having never gone out of style, tunics have simply undergone a series of style transformations. Today, tunics can be found in almost every color and pattern you can think of. Tunics are effortlessly chic and are a great addition to any wardrobe. Modern tunics are generally made from lighter materials and are cut so that they float away from the body; this is one reason so many women love them. Tunics are great at hiding any areas the wearer may be uncomfortable with; on the downside, they often hide a womans curves. To remedy that issue, tunics are most frequently paired with leggings or tights. This works well because tunics add volume to an outfit while leggings create a slimmer silhouette; the two pieces balance out one another. Fortunately, tunics are versatile pieces that can be paired with much more than leggings. Here are two easy style fixes that can transform your tunic into a more tailored statement piece: The first way to transform your tunic is to simply tuck it in. Tucking in a tunic removes

excess volume and adds depth to an outfit. For an easy day time look, pair your tunic with a sassy pair of shorts (dark wash denim works well or, for added edge, try faded cut offs). After choosing your shorts, tuck in your tunic and slightly blouse it over the waistline; this prevents the extra fabric from bunching in the shorts. Pair this ensemble with a belt and your favorite pair of flats, and you are ready to go! The second way to revamp a tunic also involves minimizing its volume. This time, instead of tucking it in, the edges of the tunic are used to form a knot. This technique can be used on any tunic but works especially well with tunics that have handkerchief hems. To create the knot, gather fabric from the right and left of the top (the section from the right should be closer to the middle front, while the section from the left should be taken from the side of the top). Take these two pieces and tie them together. There is no right or wrong knot style to use; if the tunic is long enough you can even try tying a bow. A knotted tunic is great for a night out. Complete your look with skinny jeans, chunky heels, and earrings.

trends have a tendency to repeat themselves. However, when attempting to bring old fashions into new looks, it's important to modernize. Bring back seriously old school glamour with an Egyptian inspired look. Cleopatra was not only an amazing ruler of Egypt, but she was a super hot queen who seduced many of the great rulers of her time. To emulate this magnificent lady's style, look no further than the modern day hippie headband and golden arm bangles. The average consumer in the United States owns 7 pairs of jeans. Women own slightly more than the average, 8.5 pairs (shocker, I know). Basically, jeans are great. They started out as the uniform of the working man and are now a staple in casual fashion. I would be hard-pressed to go one day- try one hour- without seeing a pair of jeans. Places like Buffalo Exchange, Platos Closet, and Name Brand Exchange have extensive used jeans sections. Buffalo Exchange alone expects to see about 380,000 pairs of jeans come through their stores in 2011. The ubiquity of jeans is taken for granted by most of us, but I wanted to know: what do jeans go through before they get to me? And, more importantly, how do they impact the environment? We hold onto our jeans for years at a time, and they last pretty much forever, how impactful could they really be? My Hips do Lie Turns out, jeans have some explaining to do. Those seemingly innocent pairs of denim hanging in your and my closets are responsible for significant amounts of water consumption, energy consumption, and CO2 production. Thanks to Levi Strauss Co.s in-depth analysis of their jeans Cradle-toGrave impact, weve got a really good handle on just how sneaky our jeans have been.

Thirsty Threads The most impactful aspect of Levis study, for me, was the amount of water consumed by my jeans. Dont freak out, but Im going to throw some numbers at you. A whopping 10,850 Liters of water go into the production of one pair of jeans; 6,814 liters grows the cotton for that same pair of jeans; 42 liters are used in the finishing process alone (pre-washing, steaming, pressing, etc.). Overall, its a shocking amount. Whats more, a lot of that water cant be re-used until its chemically treated because of the by-products produced by the dyeing process. The most surprising part was that the consumer phase was responsible for almost half (45%) of the water usage of a pair of jeans. What does this mean? It means that I have been unwittingly duped by my jeans. But it also means that the consumer (me) has control over the future of water consumption in the denim industry. And Levi Strauss Co. is making sure we know it. Water -Less = Happiness In January of 2011, Levis launched a line of denim for men called Water<Less Jeans. The finishing process of these jeans has been adjusted and innovated to eliminate water. The end-result is a new finish that gives this line a worn, but sleek look. Levi Strauss Co. is recruiting its consumers by providing staggering statistics on how much water a

consumer can save by simply changing their jeans-washing habits. For example, if we all went from washing our jeans once a week to once every two weeks, we would save 799 Liters of water for each pair of jeans. If we went to once a month, we would save 1,223 Liters for that same pair. But I hate not washing my jeans So did I. Until I actually tried it. Arent we all searching for that perfectly-fitted pair of jeans? Isnt that why we try on about 95 pairs before we finally decide on the one. (May I point out, Ive tried on more jeans in my life than Ive had boyfriends!) When we find that perfect pair, we wear them for a week, we love them and then we wash them, they shrink and they suck for the first two times theyre worn after that. Its a vicious cycle. So, I had to ask myself, would it really be worse if I didnt wash these as often?. Turns out, Levis knows what theyre talking about. Its awesome. The jeans fit better, the creases and folds look more natural when theyre actually from my body instead of straight out of the store, and I dont have to go through that awkward stretching phase nearly as often! Im just sayin. Give it a try. And please drag your boyfriends/ husbands/brothers and every guy you know to a Levis store and snag a pair of the Water<Less jeans. And then proceed to save enough water to fill four hot tubs. And then go hot-tubbing (to reward yourself).

Friends that didn't like basketball before are all of a sudden big fans because their boyfriend likes it. Friends that were relatively tame became party animals because their boyfriend loves to drink, etc... I've seen these girls change themselves for the man they were dating because they believe that a guy will want to keep her around if she likes all the same things as him. Then, when the relationship doesn't work out, the girl no longer has an interest in those things and really doesn't know what she's like. This is bad territory because relationships are about

I'm not one to boo relationships. I love relationships. They are learning experiences in life and they teach you a lot about yourself. However, I am highly opposed to all consuming relationships that completely take over your life, causing you to change who you are. Oftentimes in relationships, you and me gets replaced with "we." I call this the "Runaway Bride Syndrome," after the 1999 movie starring Julie Roberts. In the movie, Roberts plays a character who jumps from one relationship to another without ever giving herself the chance to figure out who she

taking one whole person and putting them with another whole person and seeing what comes of it. When trying to complete yourself with another person, youre not giving yourself a chance to figure out who you really are and ultimately won't ever find what you truly need in a partner. You don't need to have all the same interests as someone in order for them to like you. Obviously its important to have a few things in common in order to have something to talk about, but it's also crucial to have your own interests too. If you see yourself falling into this kind of pattern, take a step back and reevaluate what you really want and enjoy in life. Don't change yourself for a person because once they're gone, a part of you is gone too.

CM: Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to get into this business? Who wants to break ground? Poz and InfeKt: If youre thinking about starting a band or getting into music- just dont do it. We dont need the extra competition. CM: How do people gain access to your music? CM: You guys are relatively new in the professional sense, have you performed recently? Poz and InfeKt: Last time we performed was a couple of months ago, at an underground hip hop club. It was just the two of us, but normally we like to have more of a spectacle of a show. You know- with go-go dancers and a lot more lunacy. But it was still fun, we played our older classic songs rather than the new, new material. CM: How has your music evolved since starting your recent project? Poz and InfeKt: We realized that more people go to club clubs rather than hip hop clubs so we got more clubby cause thats where everyones at and thats where they have the free drinks. The music used to be really good, but now its really good.

It sounds to me like Meadows is getting to about that age Meadows is probably at a point in her life where she feels the most curious but is still a little unsure of herself. I felt the same way when I was about two too. She may be wondering about the outside because its so unfamiliar, or even to get closer to that nice warm sun. Even though many cats like to sunbathe on the windowsill, there is nothing like the fresh outside air to go with it. It just feels so relaxing! Hil and Brit usually let me go out onto the patio while theyre home. The wall is too high for me so its a safe place. On the patio, I like to explore by rolling around on the cool tile and sniffing the plants. I also like lounging in the shade or sun. I feel safe on the patio because there is nothing else out there besides me and the small wilderness. So, when Meadows waits for you at the door, she is obviously so happy to see you! When she runs outside, she may just want to see where youve been. Although if trying to run outside is new for her then, its time to have an adventure! I know the outside world can be so scary but it just takes baby steps. I am still a little afraid of the outside world myself, but I know its possible to get used to because of the Lion cat that lives next door. Shes outside all the time. (She must be fearless!) Step 1: When you get home and Meadows is waiting for you, it is time to start the training! This is the best time to practice because she is ready to go outside. Step 2: Let Meadows come to the door or outside porch on her own. She might get freaked out if you make her go farther before shes ready. Step3: Keep an eye on Meadows and watch to for dogs and cars while she looks around. Encourage or coax her to step farther out into the wild. . Meadows will most likely not chase after anything. Everything is still unknown so far to us cats. (Chasing is what dogs do!) Step 4: Whatever you do dont pick her up! When Im outside, I am almost in a zone I guess you could say. Its important for us to figure things out gradually while getting farther and farther from the front door. Step 5: Try to let Meadows explore when you have the time so that she has knowledge of the outside world. She might like it a lot or she might prefer it inside. Tip: DO NOT BUY A LEASH Love, Kingsley

The Art of the Nail

Nail art is a fun and easy addition to your everyday style. With a couple of your favorite nail polishes and a nail brush anyone can achieve a fabulous look. Plus, the featured designs can easily be transferred to your toes.

Stripes
Step 1 Paint the base of your nail grey. Step 2 Using the nail brush, steadily draw vertical lines on your nail. I found it is easier to begin at the center of your nail and work outwards. Step 3 Apply clear coat.

Splatter Shellac
Shellac is a 14 day wear nail polish with a beautiful mirror finish. This is a breakthrough product in the nail polish industry. The color I am wearing is Rock Royalty. Unlike the other two designs, Shellac is currently not an at home, do-ityourself design. To find Shellac certified salons near you, log onto www.cnd.com and click the Shellac button. Step 1 Paint the base of your nail white. Step 2 Dip nail brush into blue & make a couple large dots. Drag the color out to create the splatter effect. Add smaller dots to further add to the effect. Repeat with pink. Step 3 Apply a clear coat.
