    This report is based on 530 to 534 animals (cats and dogs) from the over 110,000 that were destroyed at our local animal pound between 2005 & 2010. I strongly believe that awareness is the key to educate the community about animal care and animal overpopulation control. The county manager as well as the pound administration is also required to involve the community to reduce the amount of animals being abandoned. I am an animal lover and a volunteer at our local animal pound, where I have learned that the vast majority in this community: • Do not know of the location of the animal pound / shelter • Believe that all surrendered pets will be adopted out; when in reality they can be destroyed within 24 hours • Believe that only sick and very old animals will be put to death, when in reality the very young will be put to death first • Do not know that over 25,000 animals are killed each year (over 2,000 each month over 68 each day) at this location alone • Do not know that our tax dollars are being spent on the annihilation of the animals • The costs involve: o the salaries of the technician who injects and of the helper who holds or restrains them o the Pentobarbital mixture, the injection / needle o the biohazard plastic bags where the dead animals are stuffed into o the waste disposal company that picks up the bags with the dead animals o the area of the landfill where the bags with the dead animals will be disposed off • Do not know of Rendering Plants – a multibillion dollar industry where dead animals (to include cats and dogs destroyed at animal shelters) are being recycled. The processed result becomes a source of protein and other nutrient, which is then used in the diet of dairy animals, poultry, pork and pet foods.     Preface I am an animal lover and a volunteer at our local animal shelter. I have seen and experienced the extensive and excessive amount of animals being dropped off, or better said dumped at the local shelter. The excuses I have heard, have been endless: We are moving I have no money to feed the dog The dog will not learn to sit down The dog is too big We just developed allergies The dog is full of fleas The dog is too old The cat does not like me anymore The cat scratches the furniture My boyfriend is allergic to cats The most troubling and heart wrenching part in all these has been when these dumped animals see their so called family walk away without any regard or remorse. The animals look confused and sad. They sit, howl and wait probably thinking that their owner will return for them to no avail.

    Upon intake cats and dogs are photographed and are given a number; then they are entered in the www.petharbor.com website.
    Dogs are placed in areas called runs where they share the space with other surrendered and stray constantly barking dogs. If they are lucky they will make it to the so called adoption floor where their lives will be spared for a little while or they are placed in isolation at the west wing or B/C ward sections. They will be put to death if not adopted or rescued within the time given by the shelter. The cats are processed the same way and are placed in cages, which do not allow them much room to roam or walk about but to just lay or sit until they are put to death upon intake or after the allotted if not adopted or rescued. Dogs and cats become stressed out; their daily routines and familiar faces they once knew are not there anymore. To the 530 animals in this report and to the thousands others; that were abandoned or dumped at the shelter or on the streets by those they trusted and followed I would like to say: Shame on us Miami

    Why Animals End Up in Shelters


    People don't care about their well being Because they are old or not interesting anymore Buyers who buy a 'type' or 'breed' of a pet just because 'they are in fashion Buying a pet for someone else 'just because...it is Christmas or Valentines Day. People wanting pets for just a season Pet Owners irresponsibility in letting their pets roam the streets on their own without identification Pet Owners relaxed attitude in not spaying or neutering their pets

    Lack of knowledge and responsibility of having pets People, who believe that a pet, be it a dog or a cat are disposable like a pair of shoes People, who buy or adopt a puppy or kitten because they are cute without the proper information and the proper knowledge about types & breeds of animals Lack of knowledge about the meaning and commitment of having a pet in a household Lack of importance and priorities; for example the monthly cost of an I-phone is chosen and preferred over the cost of keeping a pet

    Lost pets
    Due to lack of identification such as a microchip Many people do not know how hard it is to find their pets, once they leave their homes and neighborhoods All lost pets act on instinct of survival when in fear and travel away from noises they are not familiar with; cars, people, noise in general The downside is that their own survival instincts take them miles away from their human families
