Gauteng Flora Union

Gauteng Flora Union was established in January 1995. Today 21 flower clubs with 530 members are affiliated to this organization. Eight provinces form the South African Floral Union. Our aim is to encourage interest in and promote floral art by teaching, demonstrating and judging according to standards set by SAFU and World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA). GFU have three panels of qualified judges, demonstrators and teachers. Clubs hold monthly meetings which include demonstrations, competitions and workshops. Members take part in provincial, national and international flower shows. Ten Gauteng Flora Union members attended the World Show in Boston, USA in June 2011 where they competed in the flower show, attended workshops and floral demonstrations. Thirty two countries belong to WAFA and every four years a different country hosts this prestigious World Show. A PRELAUNCH TRIBUTE TO

For members of the public, ROSAFRICA 2012 will primarily be celebrated with a magnificent floral art show at the Rosebank Union Campus in Hurlingham, Johannesburg (October 12-14). A highlight for the public will be a floral art demonstration in the auditorium on Saturday October 13 (2.30pm) which includes a finale by Australian rose legend, David Ruston, President Emeritas of the World Federation of Rose Societies. HISTORY OF VILLA ARCADIA Villa Arcadia was designed by Sir Herbert Baker for Lionel and Florence Phillips in 1909. The building is a magnificent reminder of the early 1900s when the wealthy business owners were moving out of the dusty mining town of Johannesburg to the cooler ridge top north of the town, establishing a new era in Johannesburgs history. The Phillips lived at Villa Arcadia for four years after it was built before moving to London in 1914. They purchased Vergelegen in Somerset West, Western Cape in 1917 and retired to Vergelegen in 1924 where they lived until Sir Lionels death in 1936 and Lady Phillips death in 1940. The Phillips sold Villa Arcadia in 1922 to the South African Jewish Orphanage. The orphanage was officially opened by General Jan Smuts and operated for 81 years. In 2004, Villa Arcadia was purchased by Hollard Insurance, the largest privately owned insurance company in South Africa. Lady Phillips was a great patron of the arts, establishing the Johannesburg Art Gallery and donating art and sculpture for its opening. She was also an indigenous plant enthusiast and commissioned the Flora of South Africa, a mammoth work published in 6 volumes between 1913 and 1932. In 1938, Lady Phillips donated a famous World War One ships bell to Kirstenbosch for the Bell Tower Gate, a stone memorial which still commemorates the enormous contribution made by the couple to the founding and establishment of Kirstenbosch during its early years.
