Assignment #3 R1. A metal bar of mass m slides frictionlessly on two parallel conducting rails a distance l apart .

A resistor R is connected across the rails and a uniform magnetic field B, pointing into the page, fills the entire region.

R2.

An alternating current I = I 0 cos(t ) flows down a long straight wire, and returns along a coaxial conducting tube of radius a. In what direction does the induced electric field point (radial, circumferential, or longitudinal) ? R3. A fat wire of radius a carries a constant current I, uniformly distributed over its cross section. A narrow gap in the wire , of width w and radius a, forms a parallel plate capacitor, as shown in the figure. Find the magnetic field in the gap, at a distance s < a from the axis.

R4. Suppose J(r) is constant in time but (r,t) is not. Show that the charge density at any particular point is a linear function of time:

other at V0 . The space surrounding the pipes is filled with weakly conducting material of conductivity . Find the current, per unit length, which flows from one pipe to the other.

S1. A conducting sliding bar oscillates over two parallel conducting rails in a sinusoidally varying magnetic field B = k 5 cos t (mT) . The position of the sliding bar is given by x= 0.35(1-cost) meters and the rails are terminated in a resistance R=0.2 ohms. Find i.
