Location of Sherkot in Uttar Pradesh and India
Sherkot, meaning the 'Fort of Sher', was founded during the reign of Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan ruler of the Sur Dynasty, who became the Emperor of North India between 1540 and 1545 [1] . Under the reign of Akbar, it was the main town of the pargana region and was attacked in 1805 by Amir Khan, a Pindari invader. Later, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 it was the scene of battle between loyalists and rebels. The first Battle of Sherkot took place on July 28, 1857 and the second on5th August. Up to 1844, it was headquarters of the tehsil, or district and later became a part of the Dhampur tehsil. In 1901, it had a population of 14,999.

The Indian census of 2001 [5] showed that Sherkot had a population of 152,870 with males constituting 53% and females 47%. Sherkot has an average literacy rate of 47%, lower than the national average of 59.5% with male literacy at 52% and female 41%. 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Sherkot brush industries is the Concern of Sheikh Nihal Ahmad ' s Honourary Majistrate (the grandfather of brush Industry in Sherkot) son and grandsons who started brush industry in 1914 because those days for Some reasons brushes are not available in India because import were not Possible from England they belong to landlord (zamindar) family started first brush industry unit In mohalla shekhan since then this brush industry touching new highs in the world Sherkot is a biggest player in this game. Sherkot town that's all entry are covered by rivers(kho Barajas). Main Occupation of this town is people are working all gulf country as (Saudia Arabia, UAE and Qatar, Muscat Bahrain Kuwait etc) Sherkot is painting brush industry .it is town called as Brush Nagari Sherkot. Sherkot is the best example for the secularism in India. There are Hindus and Muslims are living together happily.
