As a well known junk (treasure) collector, I am trying to become a little more disciplined in managing my inventory. About three years ago, I bought a backhoe to do some major landscaping in preparation for building our new home and some additional work once we were moved in. After two years of usefulness, I sold (recycled) the backhoe and bought my newest old tractor. It, of course, has been extremely useful and my main man toy, but a number of old implements have gone unused for years and so I recently recycled those to new owners. So my new policy for managing inventory is ... prove that you are useful within a one to two year period or you are gone!!! For Sale or Trade One short little old lady!!! Other than writing malicious stories (see current Musings, I have not found other useful purposes in over two years!! Another very good reason for getting rid of surplus equipment (and people) is to make room for new to me equipment. By later today, I am hoping to return to the backhoe business. Now this is a relatively small attachment for the back of my tractor and not the big monster that I had before. After months of walking our woods roads, I have been perturbed by the condition of significant sections of the roads. There is one section of about 100 metres that is just a bog and largely impassable with the tractor. But, I believe that if I ditch it properly for better drainage that it can be used again. Then, just after this area is another 100 metres that is washed out so badly that 50% of the road is missing and there are sections eroded down at least four feet. Other than Saint John residents, no one would try to drive on this!! Throw in about six other small areas of road that are troublesome and about a hundred places that could use some improvements and you can see that a small backhoe is just exactly what is needed. Fortunately, the missus is like me, we hate to see things deteriorate and become useless. It certainly doesnt make economic sense, but somehow, having those roads restored to working condition is important to my sense of how things should be. When we no longer have the time, energy or money to take care of what we own or we just no longer want it or need it, then it is the time to seriously think about giving up our ownership to someone that will value and take care of it. How often do we see individuals hold onto things without providing any care right up to the point where they are totally useless and beyond recovery. Please recycle!! 800

There is no doubt that water is the most vital commodity on the face of the earth and we are greatly blessed that there has been no shortage of it this year; however the abundance that I have celebrated has left many folk decidedly disenchanted. The major problems appear to be the resulting mould and fungal growth and while it is not possible to totally remedy this situation, much can be done to allay the damage. Hanging baskets suffer greatly, especially when planted in the sponge like product that retains water, a great invention for a dry summer, but a disaster waiting to happen this year. When our worthy weather chaps predict more rain on the way it is worth while to park all baskets and potted arrangements in the shelter of garage or shed, pop the hangers on an upturned bucket to avoid squashing the drapery and allow them to dry out. Cutting out any faded leaves and dead heading will allow a better flow of air, critical in dealing with rot and moulds, (this allows you to continue gardening through the wildest of weather). Clearing away detritus from the plants that have finished blooming, (though normally done later in the fall), and cutting back Siberian and Japanese Iris a little early, will remove those moist conditions that provide ritz accommodation for breeding slugs and ear wigs. This will not unduly harm the plants and has the added satisfaction of yet another Fall Job done in advance. Whilst touching on cleaning up extreme caution needs to be exercised in dealing with fallen fruit, there are mega numbers of wasps, hornets, their cousins & aunts and it seems they love nothing better than to burrow into fallen fruit and, replete with the juicy contents, wait, ready to spring and sting any unwitting picker upper. These bods can be lethal and a small investment at a medical supply shop is the perfect way to thwart their plans. Extendable claws, such as are helpful for patients to grab out of reach items, are actually quite a bit cheaper than those created for cleaning litter off parking lots etc. I keep mine on my tractor and pick up sticks as I mow; it saves a lot of stopping and starting. Back to the water and how to deal with the surfeit ... just thank God that we seem to have too much and recall, if you will, the drought situation here in Canada some years ago when animals died in their thousands and crops were reduced to dust. The thought of carrying a water jug on my head for miles through the African jungle renders me positively joyful to dwell in this verdant and beautiful land. 805

WATERWoRKS

Indoor plumbing is a wonderful thing that we generally never think about . . . until it doesnt work. I vividly remember as a child using the outhouse at my grandparents farmhouse. It was a novelty and an adventure in the summer, less desirable in winter. And of course there was the summer the hornets claimed it for their own! Something one is unlikely to encounter with indoor plumbing. We (well, mostly Michael) were recently assisting one of our daughters who is in the midst of a kitchen renovation. The final task for the day was to remove the lower cabinetry in preparation for the arrival of the new ones. Although the cupboards werent much to look at, it turned out they were VERY sturdily constructed. After Michael had pooh-poohed the suggestion it might be necessary to just whack them apart with the hammer (I think the comment was something like How crude), the solution eventually came down to lets just whack them apart with the hammer, and he embraced it with great enthusiasm. The last piece to go was the section where the sink had been housed. The water valve below the sink had been shut of course, but in the gleeful dismantling of the cupboards an old joint was broken and water began to spew. Our daughter was quick to head to the basement and shut off the water for the entire building until repairs could be made. Which unfortunately took another two hours with trips to three hardware stores to assemble everything required. Done. The next day we were at my mothers for a family supper and it was noted that her pump was struggling; diagnosis, waterlogged. So after supper, gallant as always, Michael heads to the basement to drain it down. Now this is not a new experience, it is something he has done multiple times, but never with as much pizzazz as this time. There seemed to be some difficulty when it came time to restart the pump and Michael requested a little water be dipped from the toilet tank so he could prime the pump as the pressure was not coming up. As I set out to get the water, Michael commenced to unscrew the top of the pump to add the water. And immediately had a geyser to rival Old Faithful! He not only had water gushing up at him from the pump (obviously the pump pressure was just fine), but the water hit the ceiling and was also cascading back down on him from the top, as he valiantly tried to locate the right circuit breaker to shut off the power while totally blinded by gushing water. And the rest of us were absolutely no help as we were laughing far too hard to be able to function. Mike did of course successfully complete restarting the pump, my mother had her water back and the basement did eventually dry out. Meanwhile I am fearful of Michaels next plumbing adventure, since they seem to be escalating. Do I hear a drip? 801
