President Athletic
& Director
Dr. Evans P. Whitaker was named Anderson’s 12th president on Oct.
18, 2002. Dr. Whitaker has a wealth of experience in the classroom and in academic
administration.“I am impressed with the mission of the college and its emphasis on
the integration of learning and faith,” he said. “The people I met on campus seem to
have a very clear understanding of the school’s mission. Anderson is also positioned
geographically and in other ways to achieve great success in the next 10 years. I am
energized by Anderson’s remarkable progress and its potential to advance to the front
ranks of Christian higher education.”
A native of Shelby N.C., Dr. Whitaker came to Anderson from Belmont University
in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was vice president for university advancement for
six years. He holds a Ph.D. in education and human development from Vanderbilt
University, a master’s degree in institutional advancement from Vanderbilt’s Peabody
College for Teachers and a bachelor of science in business administration from Gardner-
Webb University.
At Belmont, he was a member of the Senior Leadership Team, sharing responsibility for
the general administration (academic affairs, financial and legal affairs, student affairs
and development) for the Baptist school of 3, 344 students.
As vice president for university advancement, he led the institutional advancement division and taught classes
in management, organizational theory and leadership in Belmont’s college of business administration. hUnder his
leadership, alumni giving at Belmont doubled while the endowment grew from $25 million to $50 million. During
his career, Dr. Whitaker has led efforts that have secured more than $153 million in private support.
Prior to his service at Belmont, Dr. Whitaker served as vice president for development at Wingate University,
associate vice president and director of development at Gardner-Webb University, and director of endowment
development for the North Carolina Baptist Foundation.
During his career at Anderson, Dr. Whitaker has led Anderson’s move to university
status, directed the creation of the Vision 2014 plan, and led a capital campaign to raise $8
million for a new library.

Nancy Simpson was named athletic director at Anderson University in June 2007.
Simpson came to Anderson from California State University - San Bernardino where she was
athletic director for 12 years. In her tenure at CSUSB, Simpson was recognized for dramati-
cally improving the quality of the school’s athletic programs, raising grade point averages
for student athletes to 3.22 for the fall quarter of 2006. She also was responsible for overseeing
a men’s basketball program that has won six consecutive conference championships and three
regional championships as well as a women’s volleyball program that won four conference
championships and two regional championships.
She has increased corporate sponsorships and contributions to the athletic program at CSUSB, resulting in the addition of
a 4,200-seat arena and new soccer field. Simpson, a native of Marietta, Ga., graduated from Berry College and earned a
masters degree from Southern Mississippi. She has family in the northeast Georgia area.
In ‘04, CSUSB President Albert Karnig said of Simpson, “She’s a good recruiter of coaches. She’s a good supporter of
coaches and a good colleague with them. Secondly, she really does emphasize the integrity of the program. Thirdly, and
this is really, really important, almost all of our kids carry themselves nicely. And finally, they are increasingly winning
teams.” Mrs. Simpson, in addition to her athletic department duties, is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team at
Anderson, which works closely with the president to provide the executive leadership of the University.
“We feel very blessed to have attracted such a seasoned athletic director to our campus,” said AU president Dr. Evans
Whitaker. “In choosing Mrs. Simpson, the advisory committee members and I were particularly impressed with her
exceptional qualifications and her reputation as a skilled athletic administrator, a genuine people-person and an individual
of integrity. We are confident in her ability to build on a tradition of excellence in athletics at Anderson University. I
welcome her to our staff and look forward to working with her in the years ahead.”

Pure Gold Builds
AU Spirit!!!
Anderson University has a new cheering section that is Pure Gold. Pure Gold is a new tradition
for Anderson athletics. Several AU students decided to start the group to increase school pride and
support the school’s athletic teams.

Members of Pure Gold wear a black t-shirt that features the chemical symbol for gold (Au)
on the front and “Pure Gold” on the back. Pure gold will be promoted by the athletic
department, admissions, and alumni relations.

The Pure Gold t-shirt will become a special item on campus. The shirt will be a
visible sign of school spirit and support for AU’s athletic teams. There is a special
section for Pure Gold at Anderson’s home basketball games – at mid-court across
from the team benches. Pure Gold members are required to stand when the
ball is in play and actively cheer for the Trojans and Lady Trojans.

2007-08
Anderson University head men’s basketball coach Jason Taylor had three goals for his team after the
2006-07 seasonwas completed: more speed, more quickness, and more athleticism. “We think we have done all
three,” said Taylor, who is entering his second season as head coach of the Trojans. “As far as putting the ball on
the floor, going by you, and creating a shot for someone else, we’ve got that. We didn’t have that at all last year.”
Taylor says his teams biggest two question marks are a low-post presence and consistent shooting from behind
the arc. “I think our mid-range game has improved dramatically,” he said. “We’ve got some guys who can finish
around the basket. We want our point totals to go up this season.”
After reviewing game tapes, Taylor believes Andersons scoring average of 60 points per game last season
should have been much better. “We’ve got great shots,” he said. “We’ve got layups, paint shots, open threes.
We’re going to do some of the same stuff, but we’re going to have a lot more driving. I like using ball screens.
We’re going to open it up more.”
“We’re trying not to live in the past. It’s a new year, a new team. It’s a very focused team. We’ve already had
some gut checks, but we’ve been pleased overall with the way they have prepared. It’s a group of guys who like
each other.”
The Trojans have seven returnees, guards Jonathan Mattox (So., Watkinsville, Ga.), Stoney Hill (So., Fayette-
ville, Ga.), Nate Russell (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.), and Drew Keenan (Sr., Easley, S.C.) and forwards Josh Beale
(So., Flowery Branch, Ga.), Levi Ashworth (So., Kingsport, Tenn.), and Kris Fudzinskas (Sr., Vilnius, Lithuania).
“As a whole, that group got better this summer,” Taylor said. “We’ve told the guys I’m going to ask for more
than you want to give, but not as much as you’re capable of giving. We’re going to push them hard, work them
hard. We will be prepared. We will be ready. I am a better coach than I was last year. I learned a whole last year.”
Russell was second on the team in scoring last season at 11.3 points per game. He shot 50 percent from the
field and 74 percent from the free throw line. He also averaged 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He scored
in double figures in seven of Andersons last eight games, including 25 against Mount Olive on Feb. 24. Keenan
averaged 4.5 points per game coming off the bench and was one of the teams top free throw shooters at 78 percent.
Fudzinskas was the teams leading inside scorer at 6.3 points per game. Taylor is looking for more production from
the 6-foot-8 Fudzinskas this season. “Kris can carry over his work habits on the practice floor into the game, he
will be a factor,” Taylor said. “When he wants to, he can really seal. He’s strong enough to hold a seal, and he’s
strong enough to finish inside. He also can move his feet well enough to be an effective defender.” Fudzinskas will
be a key element in improving one of Andersons weakest areas last season rebounding. Andersons rebounding
margin of minus 7 last season.

“ It’s a new year, a new team. “

It’s a very focused team.
Season Preview
“Our rebounding was inconsistent,” Taylor said. “It was frustrating to watch. We had a lot of balls popping out of hands. When you get your hands
on it, you have to pull it in. Our leading rebounder last year averaged just 3.8 boards. I think we’ve got a couple of guards who are going to average
that many this season. We need to rebound the ball better and get to the free throw line more.”
Taylor believes the incoming freshmen will convert the Trojans from a ground-level team into a team that can get above the rim. Jarret Johnson (Fr.,
Greensboro, N.C.) and Stephen Cobb (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) both are extremely athletic vertically. They can put it on the floor and make a mid-range pull
up. Kevis Cornwell (Fr., York, S.C.) and Brandon Young (Fr., Belmont, N.C.) both are very athletic and quick. Young is a true point guard who will
make everybody else on the team better.
Trey Britton (Fr., Alpharetta, Ga.) will be an exciting player at the four spot. He’s very strong, and he can play above the rim. Quinton Baines (Fr.,
Enoree, S.C.) is bouncy and strong. Cass Hickman (Fr., Bowman, Ga.) is an undersized post who will knock you on your rear. Jamelle Lowery (So.,
Stanley, N.C.), a transfer from UNC Pembroke, is a true point guard. All of these guys will give us a dimension we haven’t had. You can’t have too
many guys who can dribble, shoot, and pass
Will the influx of talented newcomers lead to a faster tempo for the Trojans? “The players will dictate the tempo,” Taylor said. “We would love to
play fast. You can only go as fast as you can go making good decisions. Our biggest priority is to get good shots on offense. I’m all for running. Run-
ning sounds good, but you have to be able to make decisions while running.”
In addition to preaching shot selection, Taylor also wants his team to be both physically and mentally tough in the nation toughest NCAA Division
II conference Conference Carolinas. “We consistently talk about toughness,” he said. “Last year, we dove on the floor for loose balls. This year, I
want us to get those loose balls. Last year, we blocked out but didn’t get the rebounds. This year, we’re going to get those rebounds. We want to have
a hunger. Is all about toughness. This is going to be a fun team to watch. It’s going to be interesting.”
The schedule features a pair of road games against Division I schools Coastal Carolina and High Point and a home-and-home with long-time rival
North Greenville. “This could be the best year for Conference Carolinas since I’ve been here,” Taylor said. “Barton is the defending national cham-
pion and is going to be very strong. Mount Olive will be better, and Queens has everybody back.”
