What is it about?
This workshop will orient teachers to effective instructional strategies that leverage upon techniques of Socratic questioning and critical thinking to help develop students to become more analytic reasoners. Cooperative and Collaborative Learning have been found to be effective in helping students to take the initiative and be more independent in their learning. Teachers who incorporate Socratic Questioning into their lessons can also help these students learn to become critical thinkers. The key take-away from this workshop will be strategies for improving your students critical thinking skills using Socratic questioning techniques. This workshop aims to guide teachers in designing cooperative learning strategies that use Socratic Questioning techniques to inculcate and develop critical thinking skills in their students in a holistic and participative classroom. Teachers will experience the Cooperative and Collaborative Learning strategies in practice as they learn about the Paul-Elder Critical Thinking framework and Socratic Questioning techniques and how to incorporate these into their lesson design and planning. They will also design a set of lesson plans for a topic relevant to their curriculum teaching, using the knowledge and skills learnt in the workshop.

Practical Knowledge . Relevant Expertise

Who is speaking? The session would be conducted by our main trainer Mrs Toh-Heng Hwee Leng. Hwee Leng has been actively involved actively involved in research and teaching in the areas of fostering collaborative knowledge building culture and designing of collaborative knowledge building environments. She is knowledgeable in the various aspects of the field of cooperative learning and had published her research papers in reputable journals and had presented at international conferences. She is working on a project basis with various Junior Colleges in Singapore. Hwee Leng lectured at National Institute of Education from 2001 to 2008 for different Academic Groups and also supervised for Practicum both PGDE (Sec) trainee teachers and Special Needs Officers trainees who support mainstream teachers teaching children with mild behavioural and learning disabilities in mainstream schools. She had also worked on a Learning Sciences Laboratory (LSL) research project studying Knowledge Building culture and use of Knowledge Forum software for the teaching of Science at Primary 3 level in a mainstream neighbourhood primary school researching the effects on academic achievement and social inclusion of pupils with mild behavioural and learning disabilities. Hwee Leng graduated with a Masters of Education from National Institute of Education (Singapore). Her other qualifications include a postgraduate diploma in education from the National Institute of Education (Singapore) and a Bachelor of Accountancy from National University of Singapore.
