Trivia for Super Size Me (2004)

The documentary premiered at Sundance in January, 2004. Less than two months later, McDonalds announced that it will no longer sell any of their menu items in Super Size Me, although they officially deny that this move was in reaction to the film. Morgan Spurlock got the idea for the documentary when he was lying on his couch at his family's house shortly after Thanksgiving dinner, watching TV when he saw the news about two teenage girls suing McDonald's for making them obese. When the movie opened in Australia, it had the highest opening gross ever for a documentary. It grossed just over AUS$1 million (over US$800,000) in the first two weeks of release. At the San Francisco premiere Morgan Spurlock said that getting permission to shoot in NYC McDonalds was often denied (in which case they would often hide the camera or go out to the car and eat), but to acquire consent in less paranoid cities generally consisted of the following exchange: "What are you guys filming here?" "We're shooting a MOVIE!" "OK." [Please note new speaker new line!] Author Eric Schlosser, who wrote Fast Food Nation, had declined to interview for the documentary. However, Schlosser eventually agreed to an interview with Morgan Spurlock, which is featured on the DVD. In the animated sequence that explains the details of McDonalds "Heavy Users" and "Super Heavy Users," one of the cartoon figures is Don Gorske. Morgan Spurlock gave up drinking alcohol six weeks before he attempted the diet in order to remove any presence of alcohol in his body. Morgan Spurlock shot 250 hours of footage. About 0.66% of this footage appears in the final cut.

Goofs for Super Size Me (2004)

Factual errors: The Blue Danube Waltz is by Johann Strau not by Richard Strauss. Continuity: John Banzhaf's name is spelled "Banzahf" and "Banzhaf" at different points in the movie. Factual errors: Worcester, Massachusetts is incorrectly spelled "Worchester" in the film.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Although a calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius, a food Calorie is actually a kilocalorie (aka "kilogram calorie" or "large calorie"), so the nutrition expert's definition is correct in this context. Revealing mistakes: Near the end, when Morgan Spurlock says, "Why not do away with your Super Size options?" the water condensation runs up the drink.
