Course Information:
Description This course analyzes the impact of society on sex and sexuality. Emphasis is on interpersonal relationships and factual information necessary to enable students to understand better their own sexuality. Topics including sex roles, sexual interaction, sexual physiology, and public issues related to sex are discussed utilizing contemporary research and cultural definitions. Methodology Students are required to complete readings, supplemental activities, quizzes & exams, group projects, participate in discussions, and view various multimedia. Prerequisite SOC 101 recommended. Objectives Explore the relationships between/among sexuality, gender, and interpersonal relationships. Provide basic information necessary for a complete understanding of the social influences on sex and sexuality. Provide information necessary to assist individuals in clarifying their own values. Provide the information and skills necessary for decision-making on issues that involve sex and sexuality. Apply sociological reasoning to the sexual aspect of human life. Analyze the cultural and historical influences on sexuality. Apply critical thinking to analyze current popular culture. Student Involvement Hours Sexuality & Sociology are both very rich content areas, as is the intersection of the two. Grading Scale & Points:


Percentages are weighted as follows to make up your final grade. Students will be able to view their progress in the Moodle grade book.

Moodle & Technical Support:


Students will access this course via Moodle by logging in at www.midmich.edu/portal, clicking on Moodle, then clicking on SOC 220. Moodle is an online Learning Management System that houses the course syllabus, supplemental materials, activities, and more. A Moodle Orientation course with tutorials covering topics such as using discussion forums and submitting assignments online is available to students within Moodle. The instructor will provide reminders and updates concerning course progress and activities through the Moodle shell News feature. Students may receive technical assistance by contacting the Help Desk in one of four ways: (1) online at helpdesk.midmich.edu (2) by email at helpdesk@midmich.edu, (3) by telephone at 989.317.4630 or x411, or (4) in person at the Doan Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Policies:
Late Assignments The instructor does not award points for late submissions. Attendance & Participation There are no specific days and times that you must be online. Activities are performed asynchronously in assigned weeks. Participation is assessed through online activities. Communication Policy Timely, responsible communication is key to an online course. Given the sensitive topics, remember to be respectful of your peers even if you have divergent viewpoints. Academic Dishonesty Students have an obligation to abide by accepted standards of academic honesty which dictate that all scholastic work shall be original in nature. All acts of plagiarism and academic dishonesty will first be dealt with by the instructor. Penalties may range from revision to failing the assignment or the course. Incomplete In order to qualify for an incomplete contract the student must have completed at least 75% of the course work. It is at the discretion of the instructor to grant an incomplete grade (I).
