Industry experience

1999 2001, 3Com, Rolling Meadows, Illinois, USA Senior Director and Chief Technical Officer of the 3Com Internet Communications Business Co-founded the Internet Communications Business of 3Com that built the first commercially available SIP Internet telephony system. This System received over 25 different industry awards, such as the CTI EXPO Best of Show Award and the PC Magazine Editors Choice Award. Co-wrote the business plan and presented it to the CEO/CFO/COO of 3Com. Managed the research and development department for this new business of 3Com.

1998 1999, 3Com, Mt. Prospect, Illinois, USA Associate Director of Advanced Technologies Proposed the paradigm of a Personal Communications Assistant and our group, Advanced Technologies, implemented a prototype system. This prototype was the first completely functioning SIP Voice over IP (VoIP) system. Started a 3Com internal program for VoIP call signaling based on SIP, developed by the IETF. I was the ambassador for SIP inside of 3Com. This has resulted in the fact that 3Com has leading edge SIP technology of which most can be directly traced back to my early SIP development effort. Worked in the SIP working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and represented 3Com at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

1997 1998, 3Com, Mt. Prospect, Illinois, USA Staff Engineer Proposed that the channel coding and decoding be done in the remote access server, which in turn allows for a larger part of the modem bandwidth to be used for the source coding. Implemented a video streamer, showing the superior performance of this approach. Proposed and implemented a simple but powerful packet recovery scheme. The time complexity and memory requirements are both linear in the length of the packet, which is significantly better than Reed-Solomon based approaches. Proposed the concept of an "error resilient tunnel" through the Internet using FEC inside of L2TP. This tunnel enables a faster TCP connection when the network is congested. Simulations show that the speed up in Web traffic is in the order of 2 to 4.

1996 1997, U.S. Robotics/3Com, Mt. Prospect, Illinois, USA Senior Engineer Co-founded the Advanced Technologies group and the Advanced Technologies Research Center. Created VoIP prototypes and wrote a widely read report that resulted in the VoIP program of U.S. Robotics/3Com. Proposed the paradigm of "hypothetical decoders" which is used to optimally trade off the delay, the rate and the distortion using a single utility function. Applied the paradigm to VoIP receiver buffer adaptation.

1994 1996, Motorola/Northwestern University, Illinois, USA Research Associate Designed and implemented a very low bit rate video coder for MPEG-4. This was the first video coder using optimal bit allocation among motion, segmentation and residual error and it outperformed all other published video coders in the rate distortion sense. Designed and implemented a boundary-encoding scheme that is optimal in the rate distortion sense for MPEG-4. This scheme outperformed all other published approaches in the rate distortion sense.

1991 1992, Landis & Gyr, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, USA Engineer (part time) Conducted research in adaptive temperature control. Modeled different thermostat/room dynamics. Invented powerful adaptive control structure, which results in simple tuning formulas for the existing PID controllers.

2001, IEEE Signal Processing Society, USA IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award Award given for: "An optimal polygonal boundary encoding scheme in the rate distortion sense," G. M. Schuster and A. K. Katsaggelos, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, Vol. 7, No. 1, pp. 13-26, January 1998. This is the most important award (formerly known as the Senior Award) given by the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Quote: The Best Paper Award honors the author(s) of a paper of exceptional merit dealing with a subject related to the Society's technical scope, and appearing in one of the Society's Transactions, irrespective of the author's age.

2006, FUTUR Trust, Rapperswil, Switzerland Technology Transfer Innovation Award Award given for the technology transfer project Sibox plus which is an inductively powered, cryptographically secure, wireless key safe now in production by Helbling and Co. AG, Jona, Switzerland. This is the highest and only award given at the University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland in Rapperswil for research and development excellence.

2006, Commission for Technology and Innovation, Switzerland Medical technology Award This award was given to the project: clothing ensemble for the upper body part with integrated embroided electrodes for long term monitoring of electro cardiogram of elderly people". This project was led by the EMPA and participants where the NTB, the ETH, Schiller AG, Odlo International AG and Bischoff Textil AG. We joined the team in 2007 and our contribution was the development of a wireless sensor network that was employed for measuring the ECG using the developed textile electrodes. Furthermore, visualization software was also developed that allowed the monitoring of the person wearing the above sensor shirt. A successor project has been implemented by us, where the award money was used to enhance the developed ideas and translate them into a body surface potential measuring system.

2007, FUTUR Trust, Rapperswil, Switzerland Technology Transfer Innovation Award Award given for the technology transfer project RockNet , which is a wireless sensor network designed to monitor dangerous mountain sides. Currently this system is being extended and integrated into POLYCOM, which is a communication system for Swiss emergency organizations.

2008, FUTUR Trust, Rapperswil, Switzerland Technology Transfer Innovation Award Award given for the technology transfer project LOCO, a high performance low complexity noise suppression algorithm for hearing aids, using spatial information and Wiener filtering. Currently this system is being evaluated by Phonak as a possible candidate for their next generation hearing aids.

2009, European Satellite Navigation Competition, EU Regional Winner Switzerland Award Award given for the project Energy Efficient Vehicle Driving and Routing Solution, an experimental on-board device which estimates the current vehicle power use, suggests a more efficient driving style and finds the most energy efficient route for a particular driver and a particular vehicle.

2009, The Association for Laboratory Automation and R&D Magazine, USA New Product Award and R&D 100 Award Awards given to Mettler-Toledo AG for the Quantos Dosing Systems QB1. At the heart of this innovation is an adaptive control algorithm for a non-linear, time varying plant with large delay, which we developed. The patents describing this scheme were filed February 2009 and March 2010 by Mettler-Toledo AG.

2010, FUTUR Trust, Rapperswil, Switzerland Technology Transfer Recognition Award Award given for the project User Interface aus einem Guss. In this joint project with the IWK institute of the HSR, a digital ultrathin capacitive multi-touch backlit user interface has been developed. The user interface is built up in layers which are then put into an injection molding machine. After the injection molding the finished user interface results. This user interface can now be connected to any microcontroller for immediate use.

2010, European Satellite Navigation Competition, EU 1st Runner-up Switzerland Award Award given for the project Smart Traffic Monitoring using a novel displacement sensor and GPS/GPRS. This is a system which employs an array of GPS synchronized displacement sensors for traffic monitoring. The displacement sensor is sensitive enough, that the elastic deformation of the road surface can be measured and used to detect the occurrence of a vehicle. Furthermore the sensor array can estimate the speed, direction and lane usage of the vehicle.
