RELIGION AS AN AREA OF KNOWLEDGE 2

GOD MATTERS XS IB CLE 2011-2012 Full Name Quirby Alberto Section H4-G 4 LC#

Note: This is your digital worksheet. You will nd the instructions for todays module here. Perform the requested tasks using this Pages le. In other words, make it your own. Thank you!

Part One: YOUR Epistemological World Views Summarize here your ndings (even if tentative!) about your theories of knowledge. Domains Natural Science Social Science Art Morality Religion Item #s 1, 5, 14 4, 8, 12 3, 7, 10 6, 9, 11 2, 13, 15 YOUR world view Evaluativist Evaluativist Relativist Evaluativist Absolutist Brief Reason + Remarks
There are many theories in the eld of natural science; nonetheless, some theories are better founded than others. A person is a unique individual; nevertheless, there is that tendency for him/her to conform with society. No one can dictate the standards into deciding which piece of art is better than another. Acts that are morally right are distinguished from acts that are morally wrong. There is only one God.

Part Two: Ways of Knowing How important are the different Ways of Knowing in the different domains? Rate them from 1 to 10 according to importance, with 10 as VERY IMPORTANT. If there are other ways of knowing/judging, use the last column and specify. Domains Natural Science Social Science Art Morality Religion Sense Perception 10 5 6 5 2 Reason 10 7 6 7 4 Language 6 5 6 5 6 Emotion 2 9 9 9 10 Others?

Part Three: AUTHORITY and/or EVIDENCE When you justify claims, how much do you actually rely on External Authority and Direct Evidence for every domain? Assign a percentage to each one per domain (Just make an estimate, so NO decimal points--e.g., 25.2321%!). Make sure both total 100%. Domains Natural Science Social Science % AUTHORITY 30 50 % EVIDENCE 70 50 100% 100% Brief Reason + Remarks
Natural Science is more or less built of facts, and these facts are proven by certain evidences. If what the authority speaks of can be closely related to someones experiences, then he/she may believe. If otherwise, someone would look for evidences. Some people have their personal interpretation for certain pieces of art, while other people look at art through the critiques of certain authorities. Authority dictates what is to be considered as morally right and wrong. Religious authorities play a big role in shaping the beliefs of the followers.

Some learnings, comments, connections... Aside from what I have learned in the previous digital worksheet, in this one, I learned about the extent to which each of the four ways of knowing, sense perception, reason, emotion and language, are useful in religion, an area of knowledge that we did not really tackle in theory of knowledge. Also, an idea that was suggested in the discussion last CLE class was faith as another way of knowing used in religion. Moving on, I also learned that an absolutist is passive in the sense that he/she just gets absolute truths from an authority. Meanwhile, both a relativist and an evaluativist are active. A relativist is active because he/she receives absolute truths from an authority and constructs subjective truths without evidence, while an evaluativist is active because he/she constructs reasoned truths from evidence as facilitated by authority. Lastly, It is also through this digital worksheet that one can reect about how much authority and evidence have inuenced the various domains of knowledge.
