The Butte
County Library
Director, Linda
Mielke, has just
been appointed
a two year term
with the Public Library Associations Tech-
nology Committee. Mielke is also a past
president of the PLA, and looks forward to
her new assignment, I am pleased to be
offered membership in the prestigious PLA
Technology Committee. The President of
PLA, who makes committee appointments,
recognized my library technology expertise
developed over my career.
The goals of the Public Library Asso-
ciations Technology Committee include
the following: to help libraries use tech-
nology to improve services, to consider
the impacts and opportunities presented by
technology, to collect and disseminate in-
formation on technology innovation which
might be applied in public library opera-
tions, to provide channels of communica-
tion for sharing among public librarians
about technology, and to work with PLA
Board and staff toward achieving strategic
planning goals as they relate to the use and
impact of technology in public library ser-
vices.
Library Director Appointed Two Year
Term On Public Library Association
Technology Committee
Since becoming the Butte County Li-
brary Director nearly two years ago, Mielke
has implemented self check-out machines
at three branches, in Chico, Paradise, and
Oroville. By making the self check-out ma-
chines available, patrons feel they can take
their library account into their own hands
when checking out materials. Though li-
brary staff still checks out materials to pa-
trons, the self check machines alleviates
pressure during peak periods, and makes
staff available for reference questions and
assistance with patrons who may be in need
of further help.
Mielke states, My professional goal
will be to bring new and cost effective
technology ideas back to Butte County, as
recommended by the Butte County Grand
Jury, in their recent positive report on the
Butte County Library. As libraries strive
to stay relevant in the face of technological
change and the advance of e-readers, the
Butte County Library hopes to meet the ex-
pectations of tech-savvy patrons, many of
whom are children.
For more information, please contact
Kimberlee Wheeler, Butte County Library
Outreach Coordinator, at 530-538-2569.

Photo Show at Avenue 9 Gallery
Nature Big and Small: Karen Kolb and
Jane King Behind the Lens (August l7-
September 10, 2011) is a two-person ex-
hibition that celebrates the extraordinary
beauties of everyday life in Chico. The
artists reception is on Thursday, Septem-
ber l (5-8pm). On Saturday, September 10,
from 4-6pm there will be an artists discus-
sion: Artistic Inspiration and Photo Fu-
tures.
Photographer Jane King says: I like
to present everyday objects or scenes
from a different angle, aspect, or point of
view that will lure the viewer into taking a
closer look at what could be considered a
common, or even uninteresting subject. If
the viewer comes back for a second look,
I feel I have succeeded! King has been a
Nature Big & Small
travel writer and packs her camera wher-
ever she goes, but Chico remains her best-
loved source for photographs.
Photographer Karen Kolb agrees: No
place can outshine Chico for its sheer
beauty. From a landscape to a street scene
to a sunset, I am compelled to capture this
place Ive called home for most of my life.
I seek the ordinary and the overlooked, as
when strangers exchange a shy smile or
when a bee lands on a blossom. Kolb is
currently building a photography studio
and is developing a photo card line. A
CSUC graduate with a Music Major, she
also holds an AA degree in Video Produc-
tion.

Orovilles newspaper headlines rocked
the nation with these words one hundred
years ago: Aboriginal Indian, the last
of the Mill Creeks, captured near Oro-
ville. The article continues, Last surviv-
ing member of proud tribe of warriors is
found, still untouched by civilization that
had destroyed his people.
The Butte County Historical Society
is hosting a free public gathering to com-
memorate this historic occasion with a re-
ception and walking tour on Sunday Au-
gust 28, 2011, exactly 100 years to the day
that he was discovered on the outskirts of
Oroville and brought to town by the sheriff
to determine his identity.
The Indian, who came to be known as
Ishi, became a national figure who has been
studied, photographed, and immortalized
in books and movies. One hundred years
after he emerged into the early twentieth
century culture of Northern California,
Ishis story continues to fascinate us.
The program begins at 10:00 AM in
the Bicentennial Park beneath the mural
Relive the Discovery of Ishi
of Ishi with several speakers who will in-
terpret these century-old events and offer
perspectives of its impact on the American
consciousness and appreciation of Califor-
nias native cultures.
Author/historian Richard Burrill will
lead a walking tour at 11:00 AM to reveal
the stories about places that Ishi was taken
during the week he spent in Oroville.
A 12:00 noon reception at the Ehmann
Home will provide visitors and presenters
the opportunity to share hors doeuvres

Cooks Racing Pigs
Cooks Racing Pigs is the most interactive show in the fair business.
Their free betting allows each spectator to have a stake in the race.
Everyone is offered a free colored ticket. If your color pig wins either
of the 2 races, you win a Blue Ribbon that says, My Pig Won. After
each race the Cooks have a drawing from the winning color for a Cooks
Racing Pigs My Pig Won T-shirt. They give away 2 T-shirts per heat
and possibly hundreds of blue ribbons at each performance.
This exciting animal
attraction got its start
at the 1986 California
State Fair. They raced
there for their fans for
a record 14 years in a
row. They are coming
up on their 25th
year and still going
strong. This show has
preformed at more
than 300 different
events throughout the
West. Charles, his wife Tonia and their son Charles Jr. are the owners of
Cooks Racing Pigs. Charles the front man, is a former member of 4-H
and FFA and the son of an Ag Teacher. Charles knows the importance of
educating the public about pigs and the Swine Industry.
In Addition to the their races Charles and Tonia offer their trivia contest
called College of Pig Knowledge. Also know as Professor Cook,
Charles enters the audience and emcees this game show asking trivia
questions that will stump and amaze pig lovers and hog farmers alike.
The Cooks assure the audience that the pigs race because they are well
trained not because they are hungry or thirsty. The pigs can eat from
self-feeders and drink from self-waters 24 hours a day. The pigs race for
a reward of vanilla soft serve ice cream and an Oreo Cookie.

Getting Back to Your Roots at the County Fair
Did you know that out of seventy-six fairs in the state of California,
only twenty-one of them are county fairs? The Butte County Fair is more
unique then most realize because it is the only county fair within ve
of the surrounding counties. Just think about it, Chris Ledoux wrote a
chart topping song about heading to the county fair and one of the most
famous, household stories, Charolettes Web, was about a pig that won
a prize at the county fair! Whether on or off screen, county fairs are a
part of history, they are the roots of many communities, and they have
touched the lives of countless individuals. This year at the Butte County
Fair it is all about getting back to our roots, learning about local indus-
tries, and Going Nuts with friends and family!
It's the Biggest Two-Man Circus Around
The Swan Bros.
Circus is not your
average circus. You
wont nd any elephants
or tigers but you will nd
slapstick comedy, clowns, and
fantastic juggling. The self-
described zany duo, Andy
and Mike Swan have been
performing together for over 35
years.
It all began when our oldest
brother, George, taught Andy
how to juggle back in 1966.
At rst Andy says he would visit the circuses just to see the jugglers,
once he saw what else the circus had to offer he fell in love.
So what should you expect at a Swan Bros. Circus show? Andy says
off the wall humor. Families can also expect to see great slapstick
clowning from Zippy & Hi-tops, juggling acts, balancing rola-bola,
comedy magic, and of course lots of great audience participation, the
reaction we get is great he said. The best thing about what we do is the
smiles and laughter from the kids Andy says, It is also fun for us. We
enjoy what we do!
So in words of the words of the Almost World Famous Duo, May all
your days be CIRCUS DAYS!
The ever popular Swan Bros. enchant and charm their audiences with
an incredible array of circus feats they have mastered over the years and
Fantastic audience participation, and much more. Better known as Zippy
and Hi-tops the clowns this dynamic duo will delight and impress young
and old alike. The Swan Brothers Circus will be at the Fair for all with
shows throughout the day, Thursday at 5:30pm, 7pm and 9pm. Friday
through Sunday at 3pm, 5:30pm and 8pm.

Two Days of Smashing & Crashing Excitement!
If watching wrecks, hearing noise and playing in the dirt get your
adrenaline pumping, then the Butte County Fair Destruction Derby is an
event for you! This year there will be two days of events so if you decide
that one-day is not enough then come and Go Nuts on the second day
too!
There are still opportunities to participate as a driver as well. Imagine
backing into another car on purpose and gaining points that dont raise
your car insurance! The ever-popular Butte County Fair Destruction
Derby will once again end the fair with a bang.
Often said to be the most exciting event that people have ever seen, the
derby provides heart-pounding excitement. Mud will y and cars will
crash, making it something to see or participate in. With $8,350.00 in
prize money for both days at stake this is serious business for the drivers.
If cars are not your thing, then participating in the rst full-size truck
derby is for you! This is open to all American made and ton pick-up
trucks with stock beds only. This will sure be a battle of the brands, so
Grab Life by the Horns and decide whether you are Built Ford Tough
or an American Revolution. Either way this guaranteed to supply thrills
and chills!
The Destruction Derby events will occur during the Butte County Fair
on Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th in the Grandstands
beginning at 7:00pm each night. Admission to the event will be $13.00
at the gate, does not include fair admission.
Drag Races in Summer with Snowmobiles
The Butte County Fair is bringing back the snowmobile drag races
on Friday, August 26th. The fastest sleds in the Western US will be at
the Fair. With competitors from Southern California all the way up to
Washington this is the event to see. The show will include snowmobiles
traveling up to 75 miles per hour in 300 feet. If that isnt exciting
enough for you, then watch the drag races as a warm up for the Quadiator
challenge.
The Quadiator
challenge
involves two
people on a
quad; the front
man driving the
back man will
have a balloon
on his helmet
and a wife ball
bat in hand. The
last person with
a balloon on their
helmet wins the
prize. The prize is fty percent of the entry money. The event is $20 to
enter, entries accepted early or the day of the event.
To see these two events get your grandstand ticket for $5. These prices
do not include fair admission.
Want to enter the Drag Races get your entry at the fair ofce at 199
East Hazel Street or go online to www.buttecountyfair.org to get the
form and mail it in. The Registration for drivers on Friday begins at 8am
when the gates open; drivers meeting is at 11am. The test and tune and
qualifying runs will take place from 11:30 to 2pm and the Main Event
will start at 6pm. Enter before August 1st for $25 or pay $35 on the
day of the event. Pit passes
are $25. Winners received
trophies and bragging rights,
cash for 1st place in each
class. For more information
on rules and class set-up
contact Kane Menth at 530-

Chris Gardner Band
A famous country songwriter named Harlan Howard once said, Coun-
try music is three chords and the truth. Well for The Chris Gardner
Band, thats exactly what inspires their popular country-rock lyrics. Real
life and the truth.
Five incredible musicians whose talents excel alone but thrive together
are taking huge steps towards ourishing careers in music. Opening up
for major country artists such as Chris Young, Luke Bryan, Love and
Theft, and Sarah Buxton, has been very rewarding for the band. They
also competed in the 2009 Colgate Country Showdown all the way to
state championships in Nevada, and entertained 10,000 people at the Pro-
fessional Bull Riders show in January 2010 at Arco Arena in Sacramento.
The energy coming off the stage when The Chris Gardner Band per-
forms is phenomenal. They [the fans] know us for our show, says
Gardner, who admires the talent of Third Day, Zac Brown Band, and
Keith Urban. We are a humble band and we truly love what we do. We
always give one hundred and fty percent, whether were performing for
two people or a crowd of 10,000.
Supporting local communities is very important to the band members
and they continue to help with Relay for Life, Make a Wish Foundation,
and Toys for Tots. We try to do a benet anytime anyone is in need,
says Gardner.
The Chris Gardner Band has so many people to thank for their con-
tinued support and love of their music. But if you asked the band who
theyre going to thank rst when they make it to the top, its Jesus Christ.
Hes the one behind their talent.
The Chris Gardner Band will be on Courtyard Stage Saturday at 8pm.
This is not the Ophir youre looking for.
Keep searching, and try again.

Porterville, CA, the Airborne Ranger Too,
an 18-foot long, 13-foot-wide and 14-foot

How to Tackle
Kitchen Upgrades
(StatePoint) For many, a high-use area like
the kitchen is always a priority when think-
ing about home upgrades. But how does one
renovate effectively and inexpensively?
The key is deciding what you need to
live in the room and organizing the re-
design in phases, say the experts at the
American Institute of Architects.
Begin by thinking about creating an
open, flexible space that will grow with
your needs. Buy raw materials like tiles
or light fixtures to save money, but have a
professional install them. An architect can
help map the process. To find an architect
to create your ultimate dream kitchen, visit
www.architectfinder.aia.org.

(StatePoint) Its time once again to buy
new school supplies, clothes and other
necessities your kids need for the school
year. This can be a big financial undertak-
ing for many families, making back-to-
school shopping a great opportunity to talk
to your kids about important money man-
agement topics like budgeting and saving.
This year our annual back-to-school
survey found that only 15 percent of par-
ents have created a back-to-school shop-
ping budget with their child, says Shelley
Solheim, Director of Financial Education
at Capital One. Back-to-school shopping
season is often overlooked as a financial
education opportunity, but its an optimal
time for parents to teach teens about bud-
gets and smart spending in a real-world
situation.
Here are some tips to help you and your
teen budget for back-to-school supplies:
Make it a family affair: Sit down and
compile a list of supplies your child needs.
Then see if you have any leftover supplies
from last year, such as binders that can be
re-used or glue sticks and crayons.
Do reconnaissance: In addition to con-
tacting the school and visiting their web-
site to find out what supplies your kids will
need, consider talking to teachers and par-
ents of older kids to find out what students
actually need for each grade level.
Create a budget: Ask your teens how
much they think is reasonable to spend on
Budgeting For Back To School
supplies. Then draft a list and price each
item using the Internet or a mobile app. If
you or your teen exceeds the projected es-
timate, work to divide the list into needs
and wants, explaining why its important
to prioritize.
Be flexible: If your teens really want
those big-ticket items, work with them to
find the money. They can find ways to
cut costs by clipping coupons, looking
for sales or buying used books. Any extra
earnings can be put into a savings account,
which lets families work towards savings
goals together.
Parents can also help kids develop fi-
nancial planning skills throughout the year,
using methods and tools that resonate with
them, such as online and video games. In
fact, 76 percent of teens say educational
video and online games are a good way to
learn, according to the study from Capital
One. One such tool is a new kid-friendly
website, JA Finance Park Virtual, which
tasks kids with meeting real-life needs,
such as developing a budget, maintaining a
household, supporting a family and pursu-
ing a career through virtual simulation. To
learn more, visit www.financepark.ja.org.
After all, 55 percent of teens said they
want to learn more about money manage-
ment skills, according to the study. So take
advantage of this opportunity to begin talk-
ing to your kids about money today.
Online tools help parents teach their kids about money.

We were back home, and then
Mom left again. Its just Dad and
me, not sure where she went, but she
took a suitcase with her and told me
to take care of Dad! Ha! I hope he
remembers to feed me. Mom does
all that, she feeds me, takes me for
walks, plays with me after dinner
and is always there for me. Dad, on
the other hand, sleeps in his chair
most of the day, but he does give me
my noon treats. But he does love
me, toopets me, even when I wake
him up in the mornings, always says
Hi when he passes me and most of
all takes me for rides.
Now that Mom is gone, Dad takes
me to get the mail every afternoon.
We go to the garage, I jump onto the
golf cart and away we go. Dad stops
for the mail, and I wait. Then we go
around the corner to the house. Its
a nice little break in the afternoon.
Dad doesnt watch me as much as
Mom, so I can get into trouble all by
myself. I took Humpy and buried
him. Then I dug him up and brought
him into the house. He was wet and
full of sand. Boy, did I get into trou-
ble. Dad had to vacuum up the sand,
shake Humpy off and took him away
from me. Oh well, I have something
else I can bury. I took my chew bone
this time. Again, in trouble. Dad
seems to be more on guard now that
mom is gone. He keeps telling me
hes going to tell Mom when she gets
back. Hoo boy, I could get in double
trouble, if she nds out.
Weather seems to be warming up
now, and it is getting very windy
here. Some days my toys just y
around the yard. And the golfers let
y their balls, and they are landing in
our pool and on the front lawn. Boy,
that wind is sure something! Dad
said he got an e-mail from Mom;
she is in France, who knew. Hope
she buys me a present. She usually
does when she goes somewhere, but
France? Do they have doggie toys
over there? I know I am a French
Bulldog, but most people in France
have poodles, frou frou dogs, as my
Dad calls them. He likes me cause
I am meaty, as in solid muscle. Any-
way, hope Mom doesnt forget me.
She told Dad to make sure I was be-
ing a good boy. Well, I hope Dad
didnt tell her about my escapades
with Humpy. But maybe it is OK,
cause then she will have forgotten
by the time she returns.
Another week has passed, and
I dont even look for Mom, I just
go about my business, be-bopping
around the house and yard, like ev-
erything is ne. But I do miss her.
Finally Dad told me we were going
to get Mom at the airport. Boy o
boy, I get to go for a ride. We park
the car and just sit! What is this?
Dad says we have to wait for Mom
to call when she get her suitcase. Oh
boy, the phone rings and now we go.
Mom is standing on the curb, am I
happy to see her! She gets into the
car, and I jump into her lap and lick
her up one side and down the other.
Boy, its good to have her home!
When she got home she opened
her bag and voila, a present for me.
A speckled mouse with big rubber
feet that squeaks. She didnt forget
me, I knew she wouldnt. Love that
lady; I really do.
