Information Technology For Business (ITB)

Project Scenario
Suppose that you have a home desktop computer and are planning to buy a notebook PC to use at home, as well as on the go. You would like to network the two Pcs wirelessly. 1. Determine the hardware you will need to acquire. 2. If you wanted to use some other devices (such as printer, scanner, etc.) with both PCs, would you need any additional hardware? 3. Also find the overall cost incurred on this network. Mention the name of the outlet from where you collected information.

Connecting Two Computers Wirelessly

In recent years, wireless solutions have enjoyed increasing popularity for home networking. As with cabled solutions, several different wireless technologies exist to support basic two computer networks: Wi-Fi Bluetooth Infrared Wi-Fi connections can reach a greater distance than the wireless alternatives listed above. Many newer computers, especially laptops, now contain built-in Wi-Fi capability, making it the preferred choice in most situations. Wi-Fi can be used either with or without a network fixture. With two computers, Wi-Fi networking minus a fixture (also called ad-hoc mode) is especially simple to set up. Bluetooth technology supports reasonably high-speed wireless connections between two computers without the need for a network fixture. Bluetooth is more commonly used when networking a computer with a consumer handheld device like a cell phone. Most desktop and older computers do not possess Bluetooth capability. Bluetooth works best if both devices are in the same room in close proximity to each other. Consider Bluetooth if you have interest in networking with handheld devices and your computers lack Wi-Fi capability. Infrared networking existed on laptops years before either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technologies became popular. Infrared connections only work between two computers, do not require a fixture, and are reasonably fast. Being very simple to set up and use, consider infrared if your computers support it and you lack the desire to invest effort in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

What is Ad-Hoc Mode in Wireless Networking?

On wireless computer networks, ad-hoc mode is a method for wireless devices to directly communicate with each other. Operating in ad-hoc mode allows all wireless devices within range of each other to discover and communicate in peer-to-peer fashion without involving central access points (including those built in to broadband wireless routers). To set up an ad-hoc wireless network, each wireless adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the alternative infrastructure mode. In addition, all wireless adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channel number. An ad-hoc network tends to feature a small group of devices all in very close proximity to each other. Performance suffers as the number of devices grows, and a large ad-hoc network quickly becomes difficult to manage. Ad-hoc networks cannot bridge to wired LANs or to the Internet without installing a special-purpose gateway. Ad hoc networks make sense when needing to build a small, all-wireless LAN quickly and spend the minimum amount of money on equipment. Ad hoc networks also work well as a temporary fallback mechanism if normally-available infrastructure mode gear (access points or routers) stop functioning. An SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID in order to communicate with each other. The SSID on wireless clients can be set either manually, by entering the SSID into the client network settings, or automatically, by leaving the SSID unspecified or blank. A network administrator often uses a public SSID, that is set on the access point and broadcast to all wireless devices in range. Some newer wireless access points disable the automatic SSID broadcast feature in an attempt to improve network security. SSIDs are case sensitive text strings. The SSID is a sequence of alphanumeric characters (letters or numbers). SSIDs have a maximum length of 32 characters.

Key Considerations
Using ad hoc Wi-Fi mode eliminates the need for a network router or access point in a wireless home network. With ad hoc wireless, you can network computers together as needed without needing to be in reach of one central location. Most people use ad hoc Wi-Fi only in temporary situations to avoid potential security issues.

Optional Components
Networking an ad hoc layout for Internet access, printers, or game consoles and other entertainment devices is not required for the rest of the home network to function. Simply omit any of these components shown that do not exist in your layout.

Limitations
All devices connecting via ad hoc wireless must possess a working Wi-Fi network adapter. These adapters must be configured for "ad hoc" mode instead of the more typical "infrastructure" mode. Because of their more flexible design, ad hoc Wi-Fi networks are also more difficult to keep secure than those using central wireless routers / access points. Ad hoc Wi-Fi networks support a maximum of 11 Mbps bandwidth, while other Wi-Fi networks may support 54 Mbps or higher.

Hardware Required For Wireless Connectivity

Since Wireless connectivity between two computers can be done by using Bluetooth Technology and WiFi , therefore the required hardware would be:

a. While using a Bluetooth Technology

We need to make sure that both the computers have bluetooth. If it is not there then we can use a Bluetooth Dongle ,which is a small USB device helps in providing bluetooth connectivity. Price Range Rs 100-500/-

b. While using Wifi

We need to make sure that both the computers have a Wifi Network Adapter.

WiFi Network Adapter is of two types:1. WiFi USB Network Adapter

Different companies and prices for WiFi USB Network Adapter available in market are: Netgear Price Rs. 900/ Linksys Price Rs. 850/-

2. Wifi PC Card Adapter

Different companies and prices for Wifi PC Card Adapter available in the market are: Netgear Price Rs.770/ Linksys Price Rs.700/-

If you wanted to use some other devices (such as printer, scanner, etc.) with both PCs, would you need any additional hardware?
In a Wireless Network, if we want to use some other devices (such as printer, scanner, etc.) with both Pc's, we would not need any additional hardware. We just need to connect the 'Other Devices' to one of the computers and enable sharing of that device on that computer. As a result, that device can be used from any of the computer within that wireless network.

Overall Cost Incurred For This Network

Overall cost for this network would depend on the hardware acquired for building the wireless network. 1. If both, the Desktop PC and Notebook PC are having the Network Adapter or both having a Bluetooth Device ,then there would be no cost incurred in setting the network. 2. Using a Bluetooth Device for both the Desktop PC and Notebook PC would cost a minimum of Rs.200/3. We assume that Notebook PC has the Network Adapter, so minimum cost incurred for setting up a wireless network using a Network Adapter would be Rs.700/- and if Network Adapter is not there in both the computers then the cost will be double, that is Rs.1400/-.
