Application
The unit is measuring the insulation resistance
of not grounded medium-voltage power
stations.
A special application is the monitoring of
insulation resistance of induction furnaces or
arc furnaces.
Special advantages:
 Separate installation of indicating and
recording instruments is possible, due to the
galvanic isolated DC current separated from
the high voltage section (measuring signal).
 Low-resistance DC power source,
therefore parasitic external voltages are
largely eliminated.
High resistance AC bleeder due to series
reactor.

Function
The measuring unit consists of the following
components:
 Series reactor
 Measuring transducer with galvanic
isolated DC power source and a limit
detector with relay contact signal.

The DC power source (U) produces via series

reactor (Dr) low-resistance phase conductor,
back to the bleeder RISO a measuring current
on ground, which is reverse proportional to the
insulation resistance RISO.

Operating instructions:

Operating test
Furnace operating system is switched off
Auxiliary supply is connected.

 Operation of the transducer MU-ISO-04

without series reactor (Dr) is not permissible.
 Always connect the high-voltage supply
with terminal 1 of the series reactor.
The output circuit terminal 9- / 10+ is
galvanically isolated from the high voltage
circuit. In the case of malfunction extra-low
voltages occur.
The metering unit including the installation
is to be tested for function prior to the
commissioning of the system.
 Attention:
When testing an entire induction furnace
system disconnet the insulation resistance metre (series reactor and transducer) first. Possibly a test can cause an
occurrence of DC voltage potential (e,g.
partial opening of the DC link)
 Trouble shooting:
In the case of malfunction at first only
the transducer is to be exchanged. If this
action does not lead to the repair, the series reactor needs to be exchanged too.
If the second action does not eliminate
the malfunction, the system needs to be
checked for the cause of the defect.

Control of the indication of

insulation resistance RISO =

Disconnect the terminal lead of terminal 1

of the series reactor.
Check:
Indicator in position and/or output current
= 2mA
Limit value relay is on contact between
terminal 19 20 is closed
Condition:
 Set point adjuster > 0

Control of the indication of

insulation resistance RISO = 0

connect terminal lead to terminal 1 of the

series reactor
Simulate a short circuit of the furnace.
Check:
Indicator in position 0 and/or output
current = 20mA
Limit value relay is off contact between
19 18 is closed.

Control of an
insulation resistance RISO

Possible reasons for malfunction:

DC voltage potential caused by converter
system. Earth shunt in the furnace circuit.

 Connect the reference resistance (e.g.

0,7k) between terminal 1 of the series
reactor and terminal 3 of the transducer.
Check:
Conformance of the indicator and/or output
current with the calibration curve.
Turn off the limit value relay by turning the
set point adjuster to (......0).

MU-ISO-04

Note:
The small tolerance of the copper resistance
of the reactor causes a maximum measuring
error of 10 . If necessary, a local calibration
is possible.

Adjustment of the limit detector

The adjustment of the switching point is carried
out via the calibration table or the reference resistance. The set point adjuster is set to and
returned slowly until the limit value relay is off
(contact 18 19 are closed). Its at 0.7k with
the quoted reference resistance.

Adjustment of an insulation
resistance RISO

 Connect the reference resistance (e.g.

0.7k) between terminal 1 of the series
reactor and terminal 3 of the transducer.
By means of a trimming resistance RE (accessible by the opening on the front plate
of the transducer between clamp 1 and 3)
the scale interval indicator is to be aligned
with the measuring shunt.
