WOOD AND MANUFACTURED BOARDS - Timber sheets that is produced by gluing wood layers or fibres together.

y MDF Smooth, evensurfaced; Made with sawdust held together by glue y Plywood Layers of veneer or piles which are glued at 90 degrees to each other; Always in Odd-numbered layers y Chipboard Made from chips of wood glued together; Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate. y Blockboard Similar to plywood but central layer is made from timber strips y Hardboard Very cheap particle board which sometimes has a laminated plastic surface; Sawdust glued together TOOLS y Hacksaw - Fine-tooth saw with a blade under tension in a frame, used for cutting materials such as metal or plastics. - Has pins for attaching a narrow disposable blade. - Held with Pistol Grip. - 10-12 inches = Standard Hacksaw Size - 14-32 = Hand Blade tpi o Handle (Different with Coping saw) o Spigot o Frame o Blade y Coping Saw - Used to cut moldings to create coped rather than miter joints o Blade o Frame

o Ferrule o Handle (Different with Hacksaw) y Backsaw Hand saw which has a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge, allowing for better control and more precise cutting than with other types of saws. o Handle (Different angle handle with Hacksaw) o Stiffening rib y Rip Saw Cutting edge of each tooth has a flat front edge and it is not angled forward or backward. o Rip cut Parallel to the direction of the grain of the work piece o Handle (Pistol Grip) o Heel o Teeth o Back o Blade o Toe y Keyhole Saw Long, narrow saw used for cutting small, often awkward features in various building materials. Compass Saw y G-Clamp/C-Clamp Fastening device to hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation through the application of inward pressure. y Dovetail Saw a small backsaw used to cut dovetails. Although most dovetail saw teeth are set for cross-cutting a rip saw tooth pattern is more efficient. o Ferrule o Stiffening Rib 15 = Approx. tpi y Try Square Used to measure the accuracy of a right angle in wood.

o Blade o Stock y Files Used to cut fine amounts of material from a workpiece. o Rat-tail Gradually tapered and are used for many tasks that required a round tool, such as enlarging round holes or cutting a scalloped edge. o Pippin files - Tapered in width and thickness, generally of a teardrop cross section and having the edge of a knife file. Used for filing the junction of two curved surfaces and making Vshaped slots. o Square files - Gradually tapered and cut on all four sides. Used for a wide variety of things. o Triangular Files - Have a triangular crosssection, which usually gradually tapers. Some files taper all the way to a point (especially small ones). Three square files are used for many cuts, such as cutting angles less than 90 degrees. o Half-round Ring Files Taper in width and thickness, coming to a point, and are narrower than a standard half round. Used for filing inside of rings. y Power Drill A fixed style of drill that may be mounted on a stand or bolted to the floor or workbench. o Head o Table

o Chuck o Chuck key o Drill bit o Lever o Base o Column o Ratchet o Motor y Bench Hook Used to provide a stop against which a piece of wood being worked can be placed to hold it steady whilst cutting, planning, or chiseling that piece of wood. y Abrading To irritate by rubbing. y Sandpaper Has heavy paper with abrasive material bonded to its surface. y Sanding block In its simplest form, it is a block of wood or cork with one smooth flat side. o Abrasive o Adhesive o Substrate
