I. Andare + a + place
The preposition “a” is combined with the definite article when saying “to the”:
al, alla, all’, allo, ai, alle, agli
Esempi:
Vado a scuola I go to school.
Andiamo a Roma We go to Rome.
Lei va alla panetteria She is going to the bakery.
*The only time the preposition “in” is used instead of “a” (andare + in + place) is when
referring to a state, region, or country.
Esempi:
Vado in Spagna I am going to Spain.
Andiamo in Italia We go to Italy.
Lei va in California She is going to California.
-Used when talking about things that are going to occur (near-future events).
Esempi:
Vado a fare il mio compito dopo I am going to do my homework later.
Loro vanno a cantare più tardi They are going to sing later.
Lei va a cucinare stasera. She is going to cook tonight.
