Leadership Committee Selection Each member of the leadership committee will be selected based on their track record in leadership in the area of their appointed subcommittee, history of fostering collaboration in team environments, and for their enthusiasm about TEDx. If you would like to be considered for a subcommittee post on the leadership committee, please e-mail Alex Lavidge, TEDxKnoxville Event Organizer <a.lavidge@gmail.com> with a brief, under 500-word explanation on why you feel youd be appropriate for the volunteer position. Submissions and self-nominations must be received by August 17th, 2011 at 6:00PM ET. In addition to heading up one of the six subcommittees, responsibilities will include: Checking with the TEDxKnoxville online project management account (via basecamphq.com) on a regular basis of every 3-4 days, minimum. Writing short, weekly reports covering progress, challenges, and requests for help. Fulfilling the requirements of each subcommittee through accepting either personal responsibility for tasks or through delegating key tasks to subcommittee members. Recruiting a team of volunteers from both a) the list compiled from the kickoff party on July 5th at Latitude 35 as well as b) from their own personal networks.

Subcommittee Descriptions 1. Speaker Committee Each member of this committee is responsible for a) reading over the programming requirements set forth by the TEDx guidelines, b) surveying the community for top talent to present and c) setting forth quality control requirements and standards. (e.g., speakers cannot promote their own business, engage in the selling of investments or securities, intentionally or inappropriately advertise a brand, etc.) Additionally, they must d) be responsible for making arrangements with the prospective speaker directly to ensure theyll be available on the date of TEDxKnoxville (which is tentatively set for November 14, 2011). (ref: http://www.ted.com/pages/inviting_tedx_speakers) 2. Set Design We expect the experience of the first TEDxKnoxville to be first-class and inspiring. The set must convey a cutting-edge feel that is as dynamic as the speakers well be inviting to speak. This committee is responsible for a) researching examples of other TEDx sets, b) working within the measurements of The Square Room, c) illustrating concepts, and d) setting forth an itemized budget request that will be delivered to the sponsorship committee. Public Relations, Social Media & Marketing This committee is required to cover the required reading published by TEDx regarding handling communications in the public sphere about TEDxKnoxville. 2

Additionally, the talent of this team must include graphic design and publishing experience. This committee will be responsible for a) growing the TEDxKnoxville community on facebook and twitter, b) designing and publishing program booklets to be distributed to ticketholders, c) publishing nametags (from the eventbrite.com database), d) sending out press releases, e) publishing flyers and distributing around Knoxville promoting the event (especially around Market Square), f) overseeing the making of a short 3-5 minute introductory video. Finally, this committee is g) responsible for establishing a relationship with Scripps Networks and develop a partnership to have them assist with taping the event as well as h) professional photographers to take pictures throughout the evening. Website Design This committee will be asked to a) compile examples of their favorite TEDx websites, b) register the domain name TEDxKnoxville.com, and c) design and host a wordpress-powered website with robust social media functionality that can publish i) photos, ii) video, and iii) content related to the TEDxKnoxville event. Our goal is to have a website up and live either by or before October 10, 2011 and to have it integrated with an eventbrite.com widget which can manage ticket sales. Sponsorship Committee This committee will be responsible for communicating with establishing a) a final fundraising budget with itemized expenses and expenditures, and b) creating literature to distribute with prospective sponsors (in partnership with the Public Relations, Social Media & Marketing subcommittee), and c) maintaining positive, collaborative sponsor relationships. Additionally, theyre responsible for d) reviewing all the information provided by TEDx regarding sponsorship requirements and limitations, and e) for identifying additional needs from each of the committees and requesting appropriate donations-in-kind from sponsors. Their primary requirements will be, on the day of the TEDxKnoxville event, to help with: a) answering questions from ticketholders, b) collecting tickets, c) guiding speakers, d) assist with stage setup and building, e) assisting with both setting up 2 hours before the event as well as cleaning up after the event. 3

Q: What kinds of speakers are you seeking out for TEDxKnoxville? A: Ideally, for the first ever TEDx event in Knoxville, we are looking for speakers to present on topics covered within the human potential movement. A: At the moment, our budget estimate is approximately $5,000. Q: How did you go about getting the license to hold Knoxvilles first TEDxKnoxville event? A: Alex Lavidge was awarded the license to hold the first TEDx event in April 2011. He was appointed the lead organizer and point of contact.
