Experiment Influence Lines for Beam Deflection 1.0 Objective 1.1 1.

2 To establish an influence line for a point on the beam. To utilize the influence line and to determine the deflection under a given loading system applied to the beam. 2.0 Equipment 2.1 Two knife edge support, two triangular stirrups, one double ended hooks, one load hangers, weights, Aluminum beam & Copper beam (25 x 6 noml) 3.0 Safety 3.1 3.2 3.3 Dress properly your own physical proctection. Store and arrange tools and equipment safety, securely and conveniently. Keep your tools in good working order and keep your work area organized and clean. 4.0 Theory An influence line shows the relationship between the deflection of a point on the beam and the position of load acting on the same beam. We use the principle of superposition together with the influence line to determine the deflection due to any applied load. An influence line for any given point or section of structure is a curve whose ordinates represent to scale the variation of a function such as shear force, bending moment, deflection etc at a point or section, as the unit load moves across the structure. Example: Influence line for determinate structures: Simply supported beam

I.L.D. for reactions at the supports: Let a unit load waves from the left end A to the right end B of the beam.

As x increases, At x=0, At x=l, =0, = 1,

increases and =1 =0

decreases.

Thus, I.L.D. is shown in the figure below. Uses of an Influence Line Diagram: 1. To determine the value of the quantity for a given system of loads on the span of the structure.

2. To determine the position of live load for the quantity to have the maximum value and hence to compute the maximum value of the quantity.
