COUPLES WHITE WEDDING DAYS
are increasingly turning green as envi-
ronmental awareness grows from fad to
way of life.
According to greenbrideguide.com,
there are 2.5 million weddings every year
in the United States alone. And each of
those 2.5 million weddings produces on
average 62 tons of carbon dioxide and
400 to 600 pounds of trash. A piece.
With the internet boasting dozens of
sites on how to keep the environmental
footprint of your big day as small as pos-
sible, those in the knowwhen it comes to
weddings here in Wilson County say
theyre happy to help.
Flowers
Greatgreenweddings.com states
that a brides choice of blooms is one of
the easiest ways to make a difference.
Many flowers sold are imported
from developing countries where pesti-
cide use is very high and labor conditions
and wages are low.
Choosing in-season, organic and
locally grown flowers can keep fuel
emissions for shipping low, while sup-
porting the brides home community.
Donna Belcher, owner of Sunshine
Flowers in Lebanon, said theyre more
than happy to make special orders to
accommodate the eco-conscious.
There are a lot of flowers available
year-round that are not typically thought
of as year-round choices, like iris and
tulips and hydrangeas, Belcher said,
noting seasons clearly impact the avail-

ability of certain blooms.
Green tip: Incorporate the floral arrangements from the
ceremony at the reception to get the most bang for your buck.
Going the green mile? Decorate with potted plants and flowers
that can continue to be enjoyed after the big day is over.
Apparel
Its takes a lot of energy and resources to make the tradi-
tional one-time wear white dress. But saving the environment
and your budget doesnt mean you have to look far.
Brides on a Budget Manager Toni Poston said they regu-
larly order from both brand-name designers as well as
lesser-known dress lines.
Countless designers offer eco-couture that use sustainable
and natural fabrics, making the dresses both beautifully stylish
and readily available.
While Poston said she hasnt had any requests for a green
gown to date, she said theyre always ready to meet a wedding
parties needs.
Wed do research and accommodate every way possible
as far as meeting the needs of the bride. That wouldnt be a
problem at all if that was a concern of hers.
Green tip: The best way to go green on your gown is to re-
use a once-worn dress. Whether its a vintage buy or altering
and updating your mothers wedding dress, the cost and envi-
ronmental savings are substantial.
Poston said while they only offer a limited number of con-
signment pieces, what they do offer is top of the line.
The only things we take have to be really, really nice
items.
After the big day is over, rather than paying for a dress
preservation so it can sit in a closet, consider donating or con-
signing your dress.
Brides Against Breast Cancer is a website that sells once-
worn and designer sample dresses, while the proceeds grant the
wishes of those with breast cancer. Brides Against Breast Can-
cer also gladly accepts donations.
Green tip: If your bridesmaids purchase a one-time wear
dress, encourage them to have it altered to something they can
wear again. Or, donate the dress to The Glass Slipper Project, an
organization that ensures high schoolers have a formal dress to
wear to prom despite financial need.

Good eats
Caterers have caught on that season-
al, organic and locally-grown foods are
in high demand.
Chester Jordan of Jordans
Catering said he considers himself
more green than most and ties that
in with meeting client needs.
We customize our menu to
almost anything anybody wants
We want happy customers.
Jordan said the catering com-
pany [Tries] to recycle everything
we use. And as much as we can we
buy local, but there are just certain
things you cant We try to do
what we can thats green.
Depending on the needs of the
couple, Jordan said theyre happy to think
outside the box.
Weve had some people that have
decided to do something different besides
wedding cakes. We had one wedding
where they did banana pudding.
Also shaking up the traditional
wedding buffet, Jordan said they catered
a night wedding that wanted a breakfast
menu.
We cooked French toast as people
came through the line And people real-
ly liked it.
Got a vegetarian or vegan coming
to dinner? Jordan said they have numer-
ous options for every dietary need and
lifestyle.
Even if its a buffet meal, if we have
somebody thats vegan well cook porto-
bello mushroom tops for them, he said.
Whats strange is youll have people
wholl say I want chicken, but then they
see the mushrooms and eat those instead.
All that glitters
Representing the
unbroken love for your
partner, even green
rings are in high
demand. With height-
ened awareness of fair
trade practices and
conflict-free gem-
stones, the market for conscientious bling
has grown by leaps and bounds.
Wiggins Jewelers Marketing Man-
ager Mindy Simmons said they are
well-equipped and able to match couples
with the perfect symbols of their union.
Just about everything we get now
does have a certificate that says its con-
flict-free, which is fantastic. And we can
always pass that on to the cus-
tomer, she said.
Keeping with the mantra of
Reduce, reuse, recycle, Sim-
mons said they see many jewelry
companies using refined gold
instead of mining entirely for new.
People are buying gold
refined, recycling and adding new
to new pieces, which is great, she
said.
And for those with an eye for
carved or wooden rings that are
gaining Internet popularity, Sim-
mons said theyve had several
customers request them.
We do have a company that
does make some of the wooden
rings. Most are an inlay of wood
with a metal thats attached to
them, because of the durability of
it. But we can order those as well.
Simmons said if couples find
eco-rings online that theyre inter-
ested in, Wiggins is happy to
special order any that dont require
a minimum purchase.
Wedding favors
When it comes to wedding
favors there are endless eco-friendly
options. Rather than spending money on
trinkets many guests leave on the table or
dont use, some couples opt to make a
donation to their favorite charity in each
guests name.
Websites like beau-coup.com host a
specific section for Eco-friendly wedding
favors, offering everything from person-
alized flower seed packets to bamboo
coasters, beeswax candles and reusable
tote bags.
The National Arbor Day Foundation
and The Green World Project play toward
the symbolism that tree seedlings repre-
sent by making them available as favors.
By giving trees or seeds to your
guests, everlasting memories will take
root and grow along with your mar-
riage, is the motto of The Green World
Project.
Endless options exist for every
aspect of a wedding that can be both
green and gorgeous. And whether you
send recycled paper invitations or opt for
a meat-free menu, greenbrideguide.com
reminds us that even seemingly small
things add up.
Theres a shade of green for every-
one. Whether you incorporate just one or
two earth-friendly elements or go com-
pletely organic, fromthe silk of your dress
to the food you serve, remember that every
green choice makes a difference.
As your marriage grows over the years so will
these trees in the yards of your friends and family.

THOUGH THERE ARE WHAT SEEMS
to be a million things to do to prepare for
your wedding, choosing invitations is
one of the most important and personal
tasks. It can also be daunting because
there are a myriad of colors, paper
stocks, patterns and themes from which
to choose.
Local wedding planners and graphic
designers said gone are the days of plain,
traditional wedding invitations. Modern
brides believe the wedding invitation sets
the tone of their upcoming wedding. Its
one of the first visuals their guests see
and gives family and friends a true feel-
ing of how the wedding will play out.
According to Amy Hicks, a popular
Internet blogger about all things wed-
ding, traditional wedding invitations
have always been white or off white and
a bride who truly wants a formal wed-
ding would most likely be pleased with
these elegant invitations.
However, another good strategy is
to choose invitations that are the style
and color of the bridesmaids dresses,
she suggested.
And, for those who want to truly
individualize their invitations to fit the
theme of their wedding, there are tons of
options out there. Google wedding invi-
tations on the Internet and literally hun-
dreds of sites pop up where you can see
invitation samples by color, style and
paper type.
After youve matched the general
invitations to your wedding colors, you
can then go to a local business who spe-
cializes in invitations and zero in on what
will make your invitation unique.
Creative Graphics in Lebanon deals
with a lot of invitations. Alisa Eakes said
all their invitations are custom-made for
the bride and groom.
It runs the gamut, she said. We
create traditional to simple to complete-
ly off the wall!
She did note that sometimes simple
is more.

She advices that brides-to-be send their
wedding invitations out at least eight weeks
early so their guests can save the date. A
trend is for the bride and groom to send a
save the date refrigerator magnet just prior
to the mailing of the invitations so that those
invited have a heads-up to reserve this spe-
cial day and look forward to a subsequent
invitation.
Another trend is the color brown, ver-
sus black ink, for invitations.
Who sends them?
Local experts said that traditional for-
mal wedding invitations were issued by the
brides parents. However, Eakes said with so
many blended families, this has changed.
Sometimes there are multiple names
and second marriages that they find it easier
to just to have their names, the brides and
grooms, on the invitation, she noted, such
as : Lisa Marie Smith and Mike David
Hizer request the honor of your presence at
their marriage
If a wedding is small and informal, invi-
tations can be sent just a week or two ahead
of time. Todays invitations may also include
such things as RSVP cards and stamped
envelope, programs, menu and more.
Unique is in
Toni Poston, with Brides on a Budget in
Wilson County, said that nearly every bride-
to- be comes to her shop and wants a
specialized wedding invitation.
We certainly match the invitation to
the theme of their wedding, she said.
For example, one couple came in and
the gentleman said he loved John Deere trac-
tors. They hired a photographer to take
several different pictures of the couple on his
John Deere. They incorporated the picture on
the face of the invitations. Inside the invita-
tion was a separate picture of the couple and
the tractor to be used as a memento of their
union and as a special gift to their guests.
The reception card inside was ivory
that matched the bridesmaids dresses and
the trim of the invitation was the notorious
green and yellow John Deere colors.
The invitations tie into all the colors of
the wedding, said Poston.
Another couple used a camouflage card
stock for their invitation because the groom
loved to hunt.
She was a country girl and loved it,
too, Poston said.
Another avenue for the budget-con-
scious bride is to order invitations via the
Internet.
You can still individualize them, she
said. There are so many different designs
on these sites, and they are delivered to
your house and then the bride just mails
them.
Deborah Moss, wedding coordinator
at Moss Florist in Mt. Juliet, said one of
the most fun aspects of planning a wed-
Copper Willow is a completely eco-friendly letterpress studio specializing in calligraphy, unique
designs, custom illustrations, hand made and green papers. They will happily create something
completely couture for you, based on your colors, design sense and overall wedding style. Photo

ding are the invitations. She said people want
everything about their wedding to reflect their
personality and sense of style.
She said outside of picking colors that
match the colors of the wedding, people have
gone so far as to send a vial of sand with the
invitation curled up inside if its going to be a
beach wedding. Or, send a seashell along with
the invitations.
Many times the invitation can contain
the take-away gift, such as, if its a garden
wedding, the invitation may be embossed
with a wild flower and inside the invitation
is a packet of flower seeds.
People like to incorporate a memento
of the wedding, Moss said.
One couple compiled a cookbook of
old, favorite family recipes and used the
same stock for their wedding invitation.
The invitations are an expression of
who they are and they tell everyone that,
said Moss. If a girl really likes jewels
or bling, the invitation should have
bling on it.
When choosing your invitations,
try to consider your budget. If you have an expensive dress,
you might want to cut down on the cost of your invitations.
Even if you do this, there are still plenty of great choices.
Keeping these considerations in mind, you can begin
your planning by choosing the perfect wedding invita-
tions to let your family and friends know about this most
special day.
Your wedding invitations will be unique, pretty and
a great way to invite all those special people in your lives
to one of the most important days of your lives.

WHAT DOES A MODERN GROOM
wear on his big wedding day?
There seems to be as many answers
as there are grooms.
Toni Poston, manager of Brides on a
Budget, said the traditional black tuxedo
with tie, vest or cummerbund is still pop-
ular, although some of the younger
grooms want a little more colorful attire.
A fly front coat with no collar
and no buttons is the choice of some,
while others choose to use different col-
ored ties and vests to differentiate the
groom from the best man and the best
man from the groomsmen, Poston said.
White tuxes also are still popular
and many grooms are choosing to coor-
dinate their tuxes with the brides gown,
she added.
Poston said younger grooms are
choosing the longer coats and that may
reflect their personality as well.
Erin Burch, operations manager at
the Mens Wearhouse in Mt. Juliet , has
also noted that grooms choose white
tuxedos to match their brides dress.
Burch said that by far the most dom-
inant choice is the black, two-button
jacket with a notched lapel.
However, Burch said that traditional
coat is more often worn today with untra-
ditional flat front trousers, rather than the
pleated pants that used to be preferred.
Dianne Travis, who has operated
Juliets Wedding Chapel in Mt. Juliet
since 1997, has seen as many as 100
weddings in a year. She believes that 99
percent of the grooms have gone with the
traditional tuxedo although occasional-
ly a groom will adopt a western or more
casual look.
She also says a few will show their
individuality with a hat or shoes.
There was a little difference of opin-

ion among those interviewed as to which
individual, the bride or the groom, usual-
ly chooses the grooms outfit.
The gentlemen usually make the
decisions about what they wear about
90 percent of the time, Poston said,
although most are careful to get the con-
sent of their brides.
But in Travis experience, the brides
are the decision makers about what the
groom will wear.
Most of the time its the brides
choice or the decision is made jointly,
she said.
Burch believes the choice is typical-
ly made by the bride, who has put more
thought into the big day. On this issue, a
man is willing to say, Yes dear, unless
a color or pattern for the vest is some-
thing he really doesnt like.
If the groom balks at the brides
choice, Travis and Burch both said the
couples usually work it out together, which is a promising
sign for the marriage.
Poston says sometimes the future wives have a chance
to show just how tolerant they are going to be after vows
are said by agreeing to their men displaying their own per-
sonalities or interests in their own special ways.
For example, the dedicated hunter may chose a cam-
ouflage tie and cummerbund. The Western personality can
show up when the groom picks out a bolo tie.
Burch said her store stocks converse shoes, some of
which are in patent leather for those grooms who go for
comfortable footwear. The store stocks colored shoelaces
to match the vests and pocket silks.
The coolest ensemble for a groom and his grooms-
men that Burch recalls involved an all-red outfit for the
groom (he didnt get it at Mens Wearhouse) except for a
black shirt. His Converse shoes were also red.
The groomsmen wore all black, except for red vests,
while the bride chose a red and white gown.
That particular wedding took place on Halloween, and
Burch said it did make a very nice picture.

YOUVE JUST SPENT A SMALL

Enter the honeymoon.
Honeymoons have been around forev-

Travel Consultant Cassie Brothers of AAA

opportunities. [Couples] arent just holding
hands, she joked of the romantic cliche. Haiti
has a long zip-line and in Cozumel, Mexico,
there is snorkeling, and the Atlantis Resort in
the Bahamas has dolphin encounters.
Many couples opt to stay on American turf
for their honeymoons. Hawaii is a classic
choice and has remained the it spot to hon-

as Las Vegas and Tunica, Miss., are increasing
in popularity, said Bob Lowe of Travel World.
It isnt just about gambling, said Lowe.
[Vegas and Tunica] have hotels, food and

In Las Vegas, couples also have the option of

We wanted to get married in Vegas because we did-
nt have to worry about who to invite and who to not,
said bride Cynthia Tanner of her May nuptials to hus-
band Kris. My favorite part of planning the wedding
was that I didnt have to.
Angelic Gardner of Lebanon worked with Villa Trav-
el Service to plan her Las Vegas adventure.
They did the whole itinerary for me and we saved
significantly. They have went and seen so you are get-
ting a report from someone who has been there instead
of just seeing three stars on a website, she said. We
loved all the shows like Blue Man Group and we saw
the Hoover Dam.
For those who prefer to keep the honeymoon close to
home, Lowe recommends Gatlinburg, Tenn., which is
less than a four-hour drive fromWilson County. Brothers
suggests the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., as well.
Cruises are another option for the couple that loves
to explore.
A cruise gives you the opportunity to see more than
one location, said Lowe. On a seven-day cruise you
can go to four or possibly five destinations. You will
experience more.
Lowe added that while cruises highlight heavenly
locations, the prices are down-to-earth.
On a cruise all the food and entertainment is paid for
up-front. The only things you pay for are cola, alcohol
and shore excursions.
Carnival, Princess and Royal Caribbean cruise lines
offer fun for newlyweds of all ages.
