Reflections on the Leadership Wilson Class

We all have heard a graduate from Leadership Wilson say: I was in The Best Class Ever! This year we wanted to select a few words from the list below and then live them in our leadership style that we practice every day. 2011 The Best Class Ever - teamwork the 2011 class quickly learned what the word teamwork meant as our overnight retreat began. We saw that we were brought together for the common goal and love for Wilson County. The class truly desires to help Wilson County be: The Place to Be! -humble we also learned at retreat what color we were in the personality test. We were shown that there are only four basic personality temperaments in the world. If you know which color personality you are - you may better understand your professional role, your role in a team, how you react to certain situations and what you can do to improve your situation. So, you may hear Leadership participants say: You have to be a RED! OR It is just fine to be a BLUE! OR Can we please have a GREEN on our team? -exciting is what the day brought each month as we learned about: agriculture; business & industry; education; public safety and the courts; health care and social services; state government; local government; lifestyles in Wilson County. -bold we learned that you must be BOLD when you are a leader. You might have to be different and go against the grain for what you believe in. We saw that first hand on local government day. -engaged we saw on Business and Industry, State Government, Lifestyles and Local Government day how we must stay engaged in our community to help move forward with the growth of Wilson County. Without engaged citizens we will become stagnate. - support we learned how to support different initiatives throughout the county when all three mayors and county mayor came and spoke to our group. -thought-provoking is what this group did to Wilson County with the group projects this year. There was The Power of One luncheon designed to bring the community of Wilson County back together for an informative and motivational discussion on the state of our county. Healthy Lifestyles focused on raising awareness and

working on improvements for the 911 Special Advisory for Emergency Responders Program. Education held a College and Career-Tech Fair for Wilson County High School students that specifically designed for students with a disability and their parents. Homelessness is teaching the county on the many faces of homelessness with working with Brooks House and Homeless Student Task Force. Senior Needs teamed with Home Instead Senior Care to executed Mission Medicine. Mission Medicine is a community event to provide a simple, safe way to properly dispose of unused and expired medications. -charismatic describes the personalities of this group.

-loyalty is what we have to our group after our year together. The friendships

that have been developed are ones that will continue to grow for years to come. -accountable we learned to be accountable to our community. Accountability enabled us as leaders to create ownership for Wilson County. That means developing ownership for problems, successes, goals, initiatives, people and results -- aka, getting things done. -skills is the plethora of knowledge taken back to our leadership roles within the community. -sacrifice comes from every employer that gave up a day a month to enable the employee to strengthen his/her leadership skills. -empowering is the Leadership Wilson experience to this class. -verecund-modest or shy is what as a participant in Leadership Wilson has to quickly get over. There is no

room in these events for shyness. Thank you Lisa Brown! - experts is what we were introduce to in their own fields each month. It was a good representation of what Wilson County has to offer! -respectful is what we had to be to the Piggy Fines. The five things that we thought were worth a fine are: late to class, cell phone ringing, forget notebook, dress code violations and cursing. We were able to give a donation to Brooks House to all the fines collected throughout the year. As we end the year, the class of 2011 says thank you to: Dorie Mitchell for leading us throughout the year, ALL the individuals that helped make each day happen, and our employers that supported us. 2011 is the Best Class Ever. Class of 2011
One important component of the Leadership Wilson experience is participation in a group project. This years class was divided into five groups to tackle issues regarding social issues in our community. The groups were charged with identifying a need and then working through a solution. The projects were presented as part of their graduation ceremony.

Senior Needs
Jennifer Whitener, Lisia Tucker, Debbie Pruitt, John Rossmaier, Mike David and Lisa Brown Our group chose Mission Medicine, a community event created to provide a simple, safe way to property dispose of unused and expired medication. We felt like this is important because the average senior takes four to six different prescriptions a day and refills their prescriptions 12 to 17 times a year. This program is a way to help protect them from accidentally using expired medications and safeguards them from the potential theft of medications from their homes. The Mission Medicine project also can help protect the environment, as well as pets and other animals, by safely disposing of the drugs before they are introduced into landfills or the water supply. If we get these medications out of the senior hands and their caregivers, we could, in turn, remove the potential harm to our youth. The event took place on Saturday, April 16, from 10am-2om where people were able to simply drive up to our locations at CedarStone in Mt. Juliet and Lebanon and drop off theri unused or expired medications. Leadership Wilson partnered with the Wilson County Sheriffs Department to have enforcement officers on-site to collect the medications, put them into a locked container and dispose of them properly. Both locations experienced a great response from the community, filling three disposal containers and receiving much appreciation from the public for providing such a service.

The Power Of One

Chase Cowden, Chip Smith, Eric Pirtle, Jeff Gannon, Penny Carroll, Scott McCormick, Vickie Rickard A luncheon designed to bring the communities of Wilson County back together for an informative and motivational discussion on the state of our county with keynote speaker County Mayor Randall Hutto and a question and answer session with the three city mayors. Our group was challenged to break down the walls between the communities and bring back a sense of moving forward together. We chose the Nashville Auto Auction at Highway 109 to serve as a symbol of meeting in t he middle. Our project was a great success with over 200 business and community leaders from all over the county in attendance.

Homelessness
Monica Franklin, Tory Treadway, Ted Bertuca, Buddy Brent, Michael Ezsol and Jeannie Mitchell The process of learning about homelessness in Wilson County has been eye-opening. We knew from the beginning that there would be an educational element to this project, but we didnt realize to what extent we would be the students, learning about the various faces of homelessness. We were so struck with the many formsm of homelessness that our first response was to do a project that was big, far-reaching, and sustainable for many years. Met with various obstacles along the way, we adjusted our plans to focus on some individuals the children affected by homelessness as well as the ladies hwo benefit from their stay at Brooks House. We wanted to continue the Leadership Wilson tradition of providing a gift for the Brooks House, so we are giving a camera security system. We also felt led to help students. Through our connection with a Homeless Student Task Force, we learned that one of the many things being done across the county to help the estimated 300+ homeless children is to provide homeless bags for high school students. We each have secured sponsorships for additional bags so that more students can receive assistance when there is no place to call home.
Page 6 Leadership Wilson 2011

Group Projects
Education
Lee Oliver, Jan Snider, Tammye Whitaker, Maggie Jullian, Matt Pillow, Jason Smith The Education Project Group held a College and Career-Tech Transition Fair for Wilson County High School students. This Fair was specifically designed for students with a disability and their parents. Wilson County has over 500 high school students iwth a documented disability. When you use the word disability, most folks automatically think of people with a physical disability; there is so much more ... learning disability; ADD/HD; hearing impairment; visual impairment; physical, systemic or health-related disabilities; and psychological diagnoses. Unlike the typical College Fair, this Fair gave students and parents the opportunity to meet with the disability service providers from area institutions. We had 16 participating institutions representing four-year public universities, four-year private universities, community colleges and career-tech schools. Before the Fair began, students and parents had an opportunity to ask questions of a panel made up of disability service provider experts about the differences between high school and college and how the accommodation process works at the different institutions. This event was very enlightening for the 36 in attendance and prepared students and their parents to know what questions to ask and what to look for in a college that best fits the students needs.

Healthy Lifestyles
Kimbel Lea, Tammy Oliver, Cristy Stumb, Mike Wrye, Christian Stroucken, Jenny Bennett Our Healthy Lifestyles project focused on raising awareness and working on improvements for the 911 Special Advisory for Emergency Responders (SAFER) Program. Our efforts included: 1. Securing a County Mayoral Proclamation declaring the days on which we transition between daylight savings and standard time as 911 SAFER days. A copy of the proclamation is attached. 2. Preparing standardized forms for University Medical Center to use in collecting pertinent information and submitting it to 911. 3. Raising public awareness by submitting articles to the local print media as well as an appearance on Coleman and Company. Congratulations to the 2011 4. Contacting local utility companies to request Leadership Wilson Class. that they include reminders in their billing. Were proud to honor all the (ongoing).

Too many folks think the 10 Commandments are rules to keep so you can go to heaven. If that's true we're in big trouble because we've all failed to keep the 10. The Gospel is that Jesus, the perfect law-keeper, died in the place of law-breakers. Starting June 5th, Fairview Church will begin a new sermon series on the 10 Commandments called Ten: Trust & Obey. The 10 Commandments point out our sin & point us to a Savior who forgives us when we disobey the 10 & gives us the power to obey them. Come along with us over the next 10 weeks as we learn to trust & obey!

Reflections on an amazing year!

Youth Leadership Wilson was something I will never forget. First off, it was a pleasure to be chosen by the faculty of Mount Juliet High School and then rechosen on a smaller ballot. It was an honor to be one of the five selected out of over 450 students in my class. I thought that was going to be the best part of the program, but I was wrong. The first time we met at College Hills Church of Christ, we were instructed to learn a little bit about ourselves. This was interesting to me. I found out so many things about my personality, and how I react in certain situations. We all know who we are, but its interesting to know the psychology behind who we really are. I never saw myself shaking the hand of Tennessee Senator Mae Beavers, Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto, Lebanon Mayor Philip Craighead, and Tennessee State Representative and Mount Juliet Mayor Linda Elam during the course of the program. It was an honorary privilege to be a part of a program that gave me the opportunity to be able to meet such dignitaries in our own communities such as these. We learned so much our community that I would have never learned otherwise. We toured the headquarters of Cracker Barrel, the Wilson County Jail, UMC hospital, and so many more big institutions in our community. We were given the opportunity to give back to the people who give back every day, to people such as Brooks House, Josephs Storehouse, and the Salvation Army. Youth Leadership altered my demeanor towards my community and showed me that there are so many good things going on in Wilson County; the only problem is that no one takes the time to find them out. I had a great time in Youth Leadership Wilson and I would not give back those sacred times for anything in the world. I truly enjoyed being a member of this program. As a result of this program, I have found interest in student government, and I was recently elected the new senior class of 2012 Vice President. I intend to pursue student government in college, and also to be a leader spiritually, intellectually, and business wise. This program has given me more than I had expected and intended for it to. It was an honor and a privilege to be a part of this program, and I would like to extend my personal thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Dorie Mitchell, Mrs. Tina Hutsenpiller, and Mrs. Kathy Haskins for all of their hard work and their enthusiasm to buy stock in the youth of America and our local Tennessee community. It has not gone unnoticed. I would also like to thank all of the sponsors who fed us when we met, and showed us good ole southern hospitality. I enjoyed Youth Leadership Wilson very much, and for sophomores in high school and lower, I recommend this program if you are someone who was given the great attribute of leadership. It will not disappoint, as it did not disappoint me. Hunter Steinmetz Youth Leadership Wilson Class of 2011
