MONMOUTH COUNTY PARK SYSTEM GROUP ACTIVITIES


Canoeing, farm tours, nature walks, and rock climbing are just a few of the reasonably priced activities available to schools, youth clubs and organizations, and community groups. All programs are led by trained staff and leaders to provide a safe, enjoyable and educational experience for participants.

About this Guide

This guide contains a review of more than 100 group programs and activities offered at parks throughout Monmouth County. It includes a brief description of the activity, location of the county park, contact phone number, appropriate ages for participants, and the maximum/minimum group size.

Group activities are open to people outside of Monmouth County as well as Monmouth County residents. ALL ACTIVITIES REQUIRE ADVANCE REGISTRATION AND MANY PROGRAMS SELL OUT QUICKLY, SO PLEASE SIGN UP EARLY.

Recreation for People with Disabilities Recreation Assistance Program

The Therapeutic Recreation Division works with other divisions within the Monmouth County Park System to adapt and modify group activities to better meet the needs of people with disabilities. Please call for more information. The Park Systems Recreation Assistance Program (RAP) works with non-profit/social service agencies and local towns to provide reduced cost or no cost recreational programs for county residents/groups with demonstrated financial need. RAP programs are currently offered at community centers, schools and other facilities, as well as in the beautiful County Parks.

Group Therapeutic Riding

Offered in affiliation with SPUR, a therapeutic riding program partner, these lessons offer an opportunity for persons with disabilities to participate in therapeutic riding skills and recreation. Participants must complete an application. Sitting stability is required. Suitable for Groups ages 4 and up with disabilities. Please call for more information.

CAMPING AT TURKEY SWAMP PARK

The Monmouth County Park System offers group camping (tents provided) to chartered organizations at the Nomoco Group Campground at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold. Tent and platform tent camping is available from April 1 to the second weekend in November. There are 6 group campsites to choose from, depending upon your requirements, and each accommodates up to 40 people. Turkey Swamp facilities include, a lake for fishing and boating (boats available for rental), over 8 miles of trails and picnic areas with charcoal grills. The Nomoco area also features basketball and volleyball courts. All group camping requires advance registration; please call for more information.

Creative Arts Center, 805 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft
Discover and develop your creative abilities with a group art class. The Creative Arts Center at Thompson Park is one of the finest in the area, offering instruction in art, pottery, and ceramics. Before or after class, take a scenic walk on the trails, have a picnic, or visit the playground.

1. Wire Work

Adults design a pair of earrings and children design a key chain using beads and wire. Its easy, and there are no mistakes! Ages 8 - 16 1 hour Group size: 12 MAX Adults 1 1/2 hours

Learn to paint like the impressionists with brush stroke techniques, color blending and more. Participants create a unique painting that resembles a famous impressionistic masterpiece. Ages 6 - 15 2 hours Group size: 15 MAX

Participants choose a plain ceramic item from our selection of figurines, bowls, vases and lawn ornaments and then paint them with their own design. Our staff will glaze and fire the pieces for your group, and in one week you can pick them up. Ages 8 - 16 1 hour Group size: 12 MAX Adults 2 hours

5. Group Pottery

3. Origami

Create beautiful models using this ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Work with different types of paper...or even dollar bills! Ages 6 - 16 1 hour Group size: 12 MAX Adults 2 hours

In these group activities, children participate in unique craft programs designed to stimulate the imagination. 1. Puppet-Making Children make felt hand-puppets using pre-stitched puppet bodies, felt body parts and glue. Then, they participate in circle time featuring stories and games. Ages 3 - 5 45 minutes Group size: 15 MAX 2. Mask-Making Groups choose from three styles: African, Mardi Gras or Theatre, and decorate their masks using beads, feathers, raffia, sequins, glitter, crayons/markers, etc. Ages 6 - 10 45 minutes Group size: 20 MAX

HISTORIC LONGSTREET FARM

Take in the sounds, sights and smells of rural life in the 1890s at a fully functional, 19th century living history farm with real animals and authentic buildings, equipment and furniture. (Programs may be customized on request.) 1. Guided Farm Tour This tour provides a greater understanding of family roles, clothing, furniture, and technology of the 1890s. Preschool and up 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 2. Barnyard Adventure Children tour the farm and participate in a hands-on activity, such as grinding corn or feeding the chickens. Ages 4 & 5 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 3. Farmers Field Day Tour the farm and pick one of the following activities for your group: a. Feed Processing- make chicken feed using 1890s technology b. HISTORIC WALNFORD

Historic Walnford offers over 150 years of history through multiple generations of the Waln family in Upper Freehold Township. Buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries - including the grand 1774 home, carriage house with vehicles, operating 19th century gristmill, and many original artifacts - provide a variety of program opportunities that focus on domestic life, industrial heritage, and historical and current environmental challenges. Programs have multi-disciplinary options and can often meet the needs of home schoolers, scouts, and adult groups, as well as classroom field trips. Please call us for more information. Guided Site Tour An overview of the Waln family at Walnford: the buildings, environment, social and cultural traditions of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Primary grades-adults 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 2. Guided Mill Tour Learn about 19th century gristmills - take a tour, watch the machinery in action, experience the how and why of milling grain, and discuss the evolution of milling and water power at Walnford. Primary grades-adult 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 3. The Little Red Hen in Walns Mill This introduction to grain and milling includes a tour of the mill. Participants experience the operating machinery and the re-telling of a classic tale. Ages 3-5 45 minutes Group size: 25 MAX 4. Wetlands Tour Explore the different wetland settings at Walnford. Discuss the classification and function of wetlands, the plant and animal life, seasonal and historical changes, and ecological balance. Available only during April, May and June. Elementary grades-adults 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 5. Hands-on Experiences These activities enhance your tour and some provide a tangible souvenir (pick one per time block): pen and ink calligraphy, weaving, old-fashioned games, and visual scavenger hunt. Primary grades-adults 30 minutes Group size: 25 MAX 6. Raise the Rafters Experience the teamwork involved in timber-frame construction as everyone helps with a variety of jobs to assemble a modest structure. Fit post to sill, join mortise and tenon and raise the bents, constructing a building as it was done at Walnford in the 18th and 19th centuries. 4th graders-adults 1 hour Group size: 16 MAX 7. Pieces of the Past Outreach Program This program introduces Historic Walnford to your group at your location, using images and artifacts to share the rich history of this site when you cant travel, or as an introduction to the site before you visit.

8. Archaeology Uncover history as you carefully dig and sift in our seeded pit, locating the remnants of 200 years of domestic, agricultural and industrial life at Walnford. Tea at Walnford Join us for a tour of this historic site including the Walns elegant 18th century home, where you will be served freshly brewed teas and sweet treats prepared from 18th-20th century recipes, reflecting four generations of the Waln family entertaining their friends at Walnford. GARDENING PROGRAMS AT DEEP CUT GARDENS

Engage your senses through activities that will enrich your knowledge of gardening and the natural environment. Programs can be tailored to meet the needs and interests of scouts, adult groups, garden clubs and school/after-school programs. Please call the number above for further information.

Gardening Program for Youth

Programs on plant growth and propagation, planning a garden, container gardening or other garden-related topics can be arranged. The types of programs offered will depend on the interests of the group and seasonal availability of horticultural supplies. Group Size: 8 MIN

Fall Foliage Safari

Take a nature walk through the park with your leader; collect leaves, berries & twigs to make a beautiful fall collage. (This program is only available Sept.17-Nov. 9 and can run no later than 4:00pm.) Group Size: 8 MIN

Pick up some gardening tips while learning about the history, folklore and plants of Deep Cut. Visit includes the rockery, rose parterre, vegetable garden, compost demonstration site, and display greenhouse featuring orchids, bonsai, houseplants, cacti and succulents. Group Size: 8 MIN

Floral Design Demonstration

Learn the basic principles of floral design and how to create your own unique arrangements using purchased or home-collected materials. Group Size: 12 MIN

Floral Design Workshop

Discover an easy, fun and economical way to start hardy seeds outdoors during winter in mini-greenhouses made from recycled materials. Great winter activity for both adult and childrens groups. Available Jan 2 Apr 15.

The following nature programs are offered at the Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell. The facility is located on over 1,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and trailsproviding plenty of opportunity to learn about wildlife, wetland ecology, watersheds, and habitat protection. Interactive exhibits, multi-media presentations, educational programs, and wildlife observation areas will help your group discover, first-hand, the importance of water in our world. 1. Nature Presentations Participants are introduced to our natural world through the use of live animals and nature knickknacks. All ages 45 - 60 minutes Group size: 25 MAX 2. Welcome to the Reservoir Students are introduced to the Environmental Center; activities include a live animal show, a short nature walk and a fun game about wildlife. Grades K - 2 1 - 2 hours Group size: 12 MIN/75 MAX 3. Little Critters Discover some of the little animals that call the park home. Participants will make a craft and explore the outside world for animal life. The program will also include a live animal show. Grades K - 2 1 hours Group size: 12 MIN/75 MAX 4. Birds, Bugs & Biodiversity Students investigate insect and bird adaptations and the importance of biodiversity. Activities include a nature walk, live animal presentation, and biodiversity lab. Pond Study Students go out in the field to observe, collect and identify microscopic and macroscopic vertebrates (animals with a backbone) and invertebrates (animals without a backbone). Reservoir Insiders Learn the history of the reservoir and see how water moves through the watershed, the river, and the reservoir. Freshwater Monitoring & Management Students will learn how to monitor a freshwater system with biological, chemical and observational testing methods. They will collect and analyze data, discuss the impact of human activities on wetlands and streams, and consider how to protect and manage water resources. Grades 9 - 12 3- 4 hours Group size: 12 MIN/50 MAX 8. Exploring the Reservoir This program includes a one-hour nature walk and a one-hour boat tour of the reservoir. Boat Tour Take a boat tour of the reservoir to observe wildlife and learn the history of the area. Grades 2 and up 1 hour Group size: 17 MIN/30 MAX 10. SONAR: Studying Our Natural Aquatic Resources With a nature walk, boat tour and experiment, participants learn about the human effects on a watershed. Available Monday through Friday, May to October. Grades 3 - 12 3 hours Group size: 17 MIN/90 MAX 11. Nature Walks Guided explorations of the Reservoir are available year round. If requested in advance, topics can be geared toward your groups particular interest. All ages 1 hour Group size: 25 MAX 12. Slide Show and Building Tour View a slide show that explains the ecology and history of the reservoir. Take a guided tour of the Environmental Center that includes exhibits on watersheds, wildlife and food webs. All ages 1 hours Group size: 25 MAX 13. Park-Guided/Self-Guided Building Tours Explore the Environmental Center, Monday through Friday, with a Park System Guide or on your own. Children learn about nature through crafts at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park Activity Center. 1. Nature Walks Guided explorations of natural areas are available at many of our County Parks year round. Topics can be geared toward your groups particular interests or tailored to fulfill the requirements for scout badges if requested in advance. All ages Duration depends on location Group size: 30 MAX 2. Lectures Lectures given by Park System staff members generally run from 35 minutes to 1 hour and may include live animals, preserved specimens, artifacts and posters and/or models/fossil replicas for demonstration. These lectures are available at Huber Woods, Holmdel, Shark River and Turkey Swamp Parks year-round or at your facility from December through March and again from late June to mid-September.

3. Nature Story Hours

Youngsters learn about the natural world through stories, live animals (except the Owl and Dinosaur programs), rhymes, games, songs and crafts. Story hours may run from 45 minutes to one hour. Story hours can accommodate up to 30 children and are available at Huber Woods and Holmdel Park year round or at your facility from December through March and again from late June to mid-September.

Manasquan Reservoir, 311 Windeler Road Thompson Park, 805 Newman Springs Road Turkey Swamp Park, 200 Georgia Road This experiential adventure features activities that involve some risk-taking. Participants may be accommodated regardless of age, physical limitation or ability. Rope activities involve climbing on a maze of ropes/cables located in trees and on poles; the Climbing Wall is a 35 ft. wooden surface with climbing holds made of resin to simulate rock. a. Low Ropes Challenge Course Thompson Park This course has approximately 30 activities, ranging from warm-ups to complex climbing challenges held 1 to 10 feet off the ground. Ages 10 and up 4 - 6 hours Group Size: 36 MAX/8 MIN b. High Ropes Challenge Course Thompson Park This course has 3 different climbing challenges, held 30 feet off the ground. Groups should complete Cooperative Games or a Low Rope Challenge course prior to this activity. Ages 12 and up 4 - 6 hours Group Size: 24 MAX/8 MIN

Goal-oriented programs help build social skills and confidence in an atmosphere of fun and adventure. Groups who work together toward a common goal also learn vital teamwork skills as they enjoy nature and fresh air. It is recommended that spring and fall programs should be reserved a minimum of 6 months in advance. Programs are available at: Howell Lincroft Freehold c. Climbing Wall Challenge Thompson Park Participants are belayed from the ground as they work on building confidence and physical coordination with the support of their team. The Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center has developed a number of nature programs designed specifically for scout troops. All programs must be arranged at least three weeks in advance. This historic site and working farm reproduces daily life and farming practices as they were in the 1890s. Longstreet Farm offers a Patch Program designed specifically for scout troops. 1. Old Fashioned Fun on the Farm

The patch consists of 6 requirements designed to teach participants what their role would be as a farm worker and farm owner in the 1890s. The program includes activities to develop better understanding of the agricultural methods, daily chores, food preparation, domestic life, games and clothing styles of the time period. 1. Group Therapeutic Riding

Offered in affiliation with SPUR (Special People United to Ride), these lessons present an opportunity for persons with disabilities to participate in therapeutic horseback riding. Goals are set for each participant. Participants must complete an application. Sitting stability is required. Groups ages 4 and up with disabilities.

Tour Sunnyside Equestrian Center and interact with the horses, with an emphasis on basic horse care and safety. Participants will groom and lead. Great fun for church and scout groups! Groups ages 7 and up with a maximum of 10. 1.5 hour session Experience what it might feel like to have a disability. Discover how therapeutic horseback riding can be beneficial to those with disabilities. Groups ages 8-11, between 5-20 participants and 3-5 chaperones. 1.5 hour session Explore the tack room, feed room and stalls at Sunnyside. Learn how to groom a horse and what it means to tack up. Children will go for a short ride with the assistance of their parent. Groups ages 4-7, between 5-10 participants, with a chaperone for each child. 1.5 hour session

Are you crazy about horses and want to learn more? Explore the different riding disciplines and how to safely interact with horses. Discover different horse-related career choices. Girl Scout participants will fulfill the requirements for the Horse Fan badge. No riding. Groups ages 8-11, between 5-10 participants. 1.5 hour session

6. Horse Rider

Continue your education about horses, horse care, and riding. Prepare a horse for a riding lesson, and participate in a group ride to demonstrate basic safe riding skills. Girl Scout participants will fulfill the requirements for the Horse Rider badge. Groups ages 8-11, between 5-10 participants. 2 hour session

7. Horse Sense

Be horse smart! Explore what it takes to choose the right horse for you. Investigate the equipment you need and the financial responsibilities of owning your own horse. Discover more about equine career options and how to pursue them. Girl Scout participants will fulfill the requirements for the Horse Sense badge. No riding. 8. SPUR Horses for Heroes

Military members with disabilities - active duty, reserve or veterans - can improve balance, gait, and morale through mounted and nonmounted equestrian activities. Lesson goals and daily activities are based on each participants individual needs and abilities. 30-min or 1-hour group and private lessons are available.

The Monmouth County Park System offers a number of beautiful settings for group picnics, many with shelters and/or recreational areas. Groups of 50 or more must obtain a program receipt at least 7 days prior to the proposed picnic date. For details about fees, permits, reservations and available dates, please call the number listed above.

1. Holmdel Park, 44 Longstreet Road Holmdel

Located off Exit 114 of the Garden State Parkway, Holmdel Park is convenient to Routes 34 and 35. This site has two 30 by 50 picnic shelters with charcoal grills at both locations. Parking is limited, so please plan to carpool and arrive early.

Located off Exit 100 of the Garden State Parkway, Shark River Park is convenient to Routes 18, 33 and 34. This site has two 30 by 50 picnic shelters with charcoal grills, and a shelter building with kitchenette. Turkey Swamp Park

Thompson Park is located off Garden State Parkway Exit 109 and is convenient to Route 34. Groups of up to 125 may reserve the picnic location with an open air shelter and charcoal grill.

4. Turkey Swamp Park, 200 Georgia Road Freehold

Turkey Swamp Park is located near Route I-195 and State Hwy 9. Groups can reserve a site at the Oak Point picnic area which has two 20 by 40 shelters with charcoal grills or the Sandy Run Picnic area which has two 40 by 60 shelters and charcoal grills. Deer ticks are prevalent at Turkey Swamp, so please take the necessary precautions before, during and after visiting the park.

5. Dorbrook Recreation Area, 207 Route 537 Colts Neck

Shark River Park

Centrally located among the beautiful horse farms of Colts Neck, this 535-acre park includes a playground and sprayground, athletic courts, and open play areas. Options include two open air shelters with a 50 person maximum each.
