Two CD Reviews
There have not been very many
new CD releases recently but here
we have two from WRD Worldwide
Music Ltd. They will both bring
immense pleasure to Ballroom and
Latin music enthusiasts.
Reviewing CDs can sometimes be
a little difficult, for music is such
an individual experience.
Fortunately with music supplied
for dancers, and in particular
designed to appeal to the worlds
best dancers, people closely
involved can appreciate and more
easily evaluate what is on offer.
Wi th these two double CDs I
found serious difficulty in trying to
use praiseworthy words that would
not be considered over the top so let
me just make the statement that, in my
opinion, both of them are probably the
very best of the seri es. Wi thout
question I found very many of the
tracks quite superb. The selection of
music and the artists, the mixing of the
music, balancing of the sounds and
instruments, the subtle adjustment of
the tempo, all were outstanding. The
trick of bringing together fabulous
music is combining old favourites with
recordings that may not be as familiar
even when the title is perhaps very
well known to you.

CD1 has ten Cha Cha Chas; all are
tremendous wi th absol utel y cl ear
rhythm and such tempti ng
orchestrations. The 10 Samba tracks
bring such an invitation to try to show
in the dance performance the 3/4 - 1/4
- 1 fundamental rhythm of the dance.
All dancers will enjoy the challenge
presented by this fantastic music.
CD2 has 10 inviting Rumbas with
the tempo between 23 and 26 bars per
Minute. The two Paso Dobles offer the
demonstrator or Showdance
Choreographer an opportunity but
both will not be too useful for the DJ
with competitions in mind. The eight
Ji ves fi ni sh off the two hours and
sixteen minutes of fabulous dance
music in superb style, all of them so
full of life and joy.

superb sel ection of ten Wal tz
tracks. So light so comfortable,
so inviting. The two Viennese
Waltz tracks, both old standards,
will prove very acceptable. I was
disappointed with the first four
Tangos, one of which, Whatever
Lola Wants by Sarah Vaughan,
had more of a Cha Cha Cha
sound. It was apparentl y re-
mixed by Gotan Project with a
Nuevo tango sound. The last
f our, whi ch I found more i n
keeping with the competitive and
advanced Tango dancers
requi rements, more t han
compensated. I t i s no
exaggeration to say that well over
ninety per cent of the tracks were
among the fi nest col l ecti on I

The DPA South Dinner Dance
The Dance Promoters Association South held their annual Dinner Dance in the Tylney
Ballroom in the Leatherhead Leisure Centre. On arrival, the guests were greeted by the
Chairman Derrick Squires accompanied by his wife, Peggy Callaghan, before going into the
reception area. After all the guests had arrived, they were shown to their tables and when
seated Derrick thanked everyone for their support and hoped they would enjoy the evening. An
excellent dinner was served before general dancing got under way to music by Richard Miller,
before the DPA Southern Premier League Under 35 Pre-Championship Ballroom Grand Final.
Eleven adjudicators were called to the floor, six ladies and five gentlemen, all had given their
services for free. The competitors took to the floor and the four dance ballroom competition
began and we saw some very nice dancing, a great final. More general dancing followed. Raffle
tickets were sold during the evening and snapped up very quickly as the prizes included
vouchers for dance shoes, vouchers towards dance dresses and mens wear, champagne, wine

The cabaret was announced and Alex
Ivanets and Lisa Bellinger-Ivanets gave a
superb Lati n demonstrati on danci ng al l fi ve
dances. Flowers and wine were presented to Lisa
and Alex by Georgina Cairncross, then they
were photographed with Georgina, Derrick and
Alan Waite, three members of the committee.
Simon Douglas and Laura Bury won the
Under 35 Pre-Championship competition,
runners-up were Paul Dwyer and Becky Davies,
Oli Coward and Amanda Unsworth were placed
third and Paul and Rachel Pankhurst were
fourth.
Alan presented all the prizes before the last
session of general dancing. Tombola was
played in the reception area during the evening
and was well supported. The evening was a huge
success with everyone. A very good meal, a
happy atmos-phere, a nicely danced com-petition,
a super cabaret and lovely music. What more
could one ask for?
Derrick spoke before the end, he thanked
Georgina Cairncross, the Secretary, Alan
Waite, the Treasurer and the Committee for all
their hard work and Richard Miller for the lovely
music played during the evening. He hoped
everyone had enjoyed the evening and wished
every-one a safe journey home.
