INTRODUCTION:
Since the Part 1 publication (in 2012), entitled "Pioneering Trinitarian Thoughts Since
1888- The Ones SDA anti-Trinitarians Find Bothersome" , an avalanche of new
discoveries have been made regarding the support for the Trinity (the non-Catholic or
“three holiest beings” version) by the SDA pioneers after 1888 and before 1915 when Mrs.
White died. How often have we seen/heard the anti-Trinitarian dissidents in our SDA
Church make the claim that for over 100 years (from 1844 to 1944) none of the bona fide
or grounded SDA pioneers supported any version of the Trinity. Well, the information now
available makes that claim so way off-base that its either total ignorance, research
incompetence or laziness, or downright dishonesty which would have someone make that
claim today, or support that faulty claim. Make sure to read Part 1 of the free booklet seen
linked here (click all links throughout to view more free online material), even as you
now have before you the updated version (or Part 2) that will simply blow you away with
how much the SDA pioneers had really come to accept a certain version of the Trinity
before 1915. And if you wish to discover why they taught the non-Catholic or “three
[separate]beings” version of the Trinity, see this vital free booklet explaining it all in no
uncertain terms: https://www.scribd.com/document/332422277/SDA-Pioneers-Rejected-
Papal-Trinity-But-2nd-edition

Now, interestingly, there are actually MORE quotes from our SDA pioneers after 1888 and
before 1915 supporting the biblical or separate-beings-of-the-Godhead Trinity or Trio than
pre-1888 quotes available of them rightfully opposing the Roman Catholic explanation of
the Trinity (i.e. consisting of non-individual “persons” united in one undivided
substance)!! Now, some may wonder where’s the proof to me making the above statement.
Well, dear reader, judge for yourself hereafter from the actual quotes and the direct
links to the original sources of those quotes now all in in your hands. Just read on and
compare with those pioneering statements of them opposing the Catholic version of the
Trinity.

One of the mistakes SOME researchers make when they delve into the pioneering thoughts
of our SDA pioneers is just to look back into The Review and Herald and The Signs of the
Times SDA periodicals MOSTLY (along with a few others like The Youth Instructor)), but
they neglect the very many other contemporary SDA periodicals and literature sources
which were operating side by side with them right throughout the lives of the SDA
pioneers, and distributed on every continent. Thankfully, the online archives of the
General Conference of SDAs has ALL the necessary literature from SDA history
professionally saved as actual xeroxed copies of the very originals; and with a
powerful search engine made possible via modern technology, research into our SDA
past is now so much easier.

In this Part 2 booklet now in your hands be prepared to be simply overwhelmed with
such a preponderance of data (quotes) showing our SDA pioneers gradually coming
to support the non-Catholic version of the Trinity AFTER 1888 mostly and BEFORE
1915, as seen in our pioneering periodicals like The Oriental Watchman, The Present Truth,
The Union Conference Record, The Australasian Record, The South American Missionary, The
Bible Training School, among many others not as well-known as The Review and Herald or
The Signs of the Times. I have made sure to supply the links to the direct sources.

And since some will want to debate who really is our SDA “pioneers, (see details on each
pioneer at this link) let me briefly share on that issue as we now go into simply looking at
what the post-1888 and pre-1915 SDA pioneers had to say (i.e. IN THEIR OWN WORDS).
Below is a snapshot from my Facebook page highlighting part of a dialog (in 2016) with
certain SDA anti-Trinitarian dissidents troubling the SDA Church about who really should
we call “the pioneers” of the SDA Church. This is important when dealing with the Trinity
changes which took place in Adventism under their watch, so see this exhibit of how the
issue should be dealt with when dealing with the dissidents.

Now, “one classic example” that could be given is this quote (seen on the next page), which
will set the stage to show you what exactly this booklet in your hands is aimed at proving:
We have on record not just this pioneering testimony, but the more remarkable testimony
from Mrs. White herself affirming certain of our SDA pioneers like S.N. Haskell who taught
the new SDA version of "the Trinity" (of separate or individual beings) after 1888 and
before 1915 (remember 1915 was the year when Mrs. White died). As it concerns Elder
S.N. Haskell, Mrs. White actually affirmed and promoted his teaching ministry and urged
him to be put in charge of bible school to train pastors and missionaries even while he
taught the “three beings” version of the Trinity. Here is what she had to say about him
in the 1906 Review and Herald:

"The children in our families need thorough instruction in the Bible. Let every soul put
his talent of means, and his talent of speech, into the service of God...... Because of the
importance of this work [i.e. bible instruction], I have urged that Elder Haskell and his
wife, as ministers of God, shall give Bible instruction to those who will offer themselves
for service."
---E.G. White, Review and Herald, November 29, 1906

Right after that S.N. Haskell was in charge of an SDA periodical/magazine called
appropriately "The Bible Training School", and in it here is what he was teaching about
God, and the worship of God (in fulfillment of Mrs. White urging that he be in charge of
training people in bible studies):

"The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one and receive worship. Each one
represents all the other members of the *Trinity...[but] Gabriel was only an angel
bearing a message from the great *Trinity of heaven, and could not receive worship
[Rev. 19:10; Rev. 22:8-9]" ---S.N. Haskell, The Bible Training School, November 1907,
No. 6, pg. 94
"It is evident that the Holy Spirit is one of the *Trinity, and fully represent God [the
Father] and Christ, and the *Trinity; and appears in any form or shape, or without form
or shape, as best answers the purpose of God"
---S.N. Haskell, The Bible Training School, 1910, Vol. 9, No. 7, pg. 13

Clearly Elder Haskell was no heretic drifting off into falsehoods, and Mrs. White never
changed her mind about him afterwards (i.e. before her death), since she herself had said
even before Elder Haskell's above quoted teaching:

...let us [SDAs] consecrate to Him ["the Lord" our God] all that we are, and all that we
have, and then may we all unite to swell the song, “Praise God, from whom all blessings
flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise
Father, Son, *AND Holy Ghost .”
---E.G. White, Review and Herald (SDA periodical), January 4, 1881

So after 1888 the SDA pioneers Haskell and Mrs. White were in agreement on the subject of
who to worship; "the three living persons" of "the eternal Godhead", as Mrs. White
herself is on record describing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!!

In the 1908 edition of Elder Haskell's most noted 1905 book he made plain as well, as a
matter of permanent record:
"...to John who fell before him [Gabriel] to worship he said, 'do it not [instead 'worship
God' ; Rev. 19:10]...Gabriel was only an angel, upheld by the same Power that sustained
John, and he would not for one moment allow John to be deceived by thinking he was a
part of the great *TRINITY of heaven, and worthy of the worship of mankind.”
– S.N. Haskell, The Story of Daniel the Prophet, 1908 edition, pg. 132

http://documents.adventistarchives.org/Books/DP1908.pdf

Seems like his message was consistent on the issue, and Mrs. White endorsed his teaching
ministry for/while echoing and re-echoing this message after 1888!

Another SDA pioneer who taught the new SDA version of the Trinity (of separate or
individual beings), and who Mrs. White affirmed and promoted despite doing so was F. M.
Wilcox. She had him in her last will and testament before her death to be among the first
members of the Board of trustees to guard her estate (i.e. her writings and her property)
upon her death. Thus F.M. Wilcox as well was no heretic that she had no faith in, and F.M.
Wilcox in 1913 (two years before Mrs. White's death) is on record expressing the following
about what SDAs had come to believe and teach after 1888:
“Seventh-day Adventists [not just myself] believe [now] in ... the Divine
*TRINITY. This Trinity consists of the Eternal Father… the Lord Jesus Christ… [and] the
Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Godhead”
---F. M. Wilcox (chief editor), *Review and Herald, October 9, 1913
http://documents.adventistarchives.org/Periodicals/RH/RH19131009-V90-41.pdf

“…the Godhead, or *TRINITY, consists of the Eternal Father, a personal, spiritual Being,
omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, infinite in wisdom and love; the Lord Jesus
Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, through whom all things were created and
through whom the salvation of the redeemed hosts will be accomplished; the Holy
Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, the great regenerating power in the work of
redemption…We [Adventists] recognize the divine Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit, each possessing a distinct and separate personality, but one in nature and
in purpose, so welded together in this infinite union that the apostle James speaks of
them as "one God." James 2:19. This divine unity is similar to the unity existing between
Christ and the believer, and between the different believers in their fellowship in Christ
Jesus [i.e. unity of separate personal beings]…”
--- F.M. Wilcox, Christ is Very God, Review and Herald

“...after Christ should leave His disciples, the Spirit was to become His official
*REPRESENTATIVE, His vicegerent, in a new and larger sense than ever before. We may
remark in passing that Christ has only one *Vicegerent [keep in mind someone CANNOT
be their own "Vicegerent", but "another" can be]. He gives no recognition to any prelate of
any church or religious faith who may lay claim to this position...The sinner who accepts
Christ as his Savior expresses his faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of his Lord in
the rite of baptism by immersion. This baptism is “in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Matthew 28:19. This text clearly reveals that the Holy Spirit
is one of the holy *TRINITY…In our study of the work of the Holy Spirit we may profitably
consider further what this heavenly agency is.
We are not to think of the Spirit as a mere influence emanating from a divine source.

Distinctive characteristics are ascribed to the Holy Spirit in the Word of God. We enumerate
a few of these. The Bible represents the Spirit as possessing wisdom (1 Corinthians 2:10),
having feelings of love (Romans 15:30), being able to instruct (Nehemiah 9:20), feeling
grief over sins of professed Christians (Ephesians 4:30), making intercession for the saints
(Romans 8:27), forbidding the apostle Paul to preach at a particular time in Asia (Acts 16:6,
7).These and other Scriptures reveal that the Holy Spirit is A PERSONAL BEING the third
person of the Godhead....Many of us, as we have read the story of how Jesus walked and
talked with His disciples, have wished that we might have been there; but today we have a
Person just as divine as Jesus, just as worthy of our confidence and our trust, right by
our side to supply every need of our life…No matter how dark the night and how many
foes we may fear are lurking on every hand, there is a divine One who walks by our side
and who can and will protect us from every danger. He can make the darkest night
bright by the glory of His presence.”
---F.M. Wilcox, Heart to Heart Talks, pgs. 51, 52

The record is plain, telling us why the SDA pioneers from as early as 1908 had the "Christ
in Song" denominational hymnal (as compiled by Mrs. White's own nephew, brother F.E.
Belden) having on page 6 an entire section labeled "Praise to *THE *TRINITY", with songs
praising "the eternal Three", who were often separately listed as "living persons" (i.e. the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Mrs. White herself would have sung from this hymnal, and yet
registered no objection right up to her 1915 death. And never forget that when she
chastised J.H. Kellogg for his post-1900 "alpha heresy" nowhere does she disagree with him
that the Spirit "is a person as God is a person", or that there is a "trinity" in heaven, but she
simply opposed his bid to illustrate these "three living persons" with inanimate aspects of
nature (dew, cloud, rain, light, etc.). Click the link for proof. Far from opposing the view that
the Spirit is a person or that there is a "trinity" of "three living persons", she affirmed it to
counter Kellogg's pantheism, just as the Review and Herald did in 1900 by saying:

"This we [SDAs] call pantheism of the most revolting type —a confounding of the third
person of the blessed *Trinity with a secretion of the nerves."
----Review and Herald, Vol. 77, No. 49; October 2, 1900, p. 627

No wonder then that an objective anti-Trinitarian online recently made the following
confession in 2017 on Facebook:
TESTIMONY OF THE SDA ANTI-TRINITARIAN, JASON SMITH:
“... While it is true that Sister White never used the word “trinity” herself when speaking of God
it is also equally true that she never rebuked or repudiated the SDA pioneers who used it
during her lifetime and there were several of them. It is unfathomable that she missed all of
those references. The truth is that she remained neutral and thus honest logicality compels
the conclusion that there is a “trinity” that one can hold to which is in no way a salvific
danger. I know some of my SDA anti-trinitarian brethren get upset when I say this but I don't
serve them… if there wasn't an acceptable "trinity" view possible then surely the Spirit of
Christ would have warned us clearly through Mrs. White’s prophetic gift. This is not the case
though…" --- Jason Smith, Facebook discussion, October 2, 2017

Enough said. It’s really hard to kick against the pricks where the plain evidence of history is
concerned!! Now, let’s simply now delve into the overwhelming collection of pioneering
quotes, with the links taking you directly to the original sources.

“WHEN WAS GOD'S ETERNAL PURPOSE REVEALED?”

H. F. PHELPS

“But now let the mind enlarge to take in some of the eternity of the past. There must have
been a beginning of this revelation, a beginning of the work of creation. And this must have
been the very beginning of the revelation of that same eternal purpose. Preceding this
beginning; there must have been, according to Rom. 16: 25, R. V., "times eternal," when
there were no worlds; no created being, not even an angel; in fact, there were only three

THE GODHEAD IS COMPOSED OF THREE PERSONAL BEINGS; the Holy Ghost is
possessed of a divine personality (1912)

Review and Herald for 1912 - Vol. 89 - No. 51

The Trinity.

W. R. FRENCH

“The language of Jesus, “If I depart, I will send him unto you," plainly shows the Holy Ghost
to be possessed of a divine personality. The same argument applied to the language, "
Whom the Father will send in " my name," indicates the same truth, and thus establishes
the conclusion that the Godhead is composed of three personal beings, and that these
three are one.

The oneness of the Godhead must, then, consist not in personality, but in some other kind
of oneness. Let us apply the Bible idea of oneness of individuals to the Godhead, and see
if it will contradict the possibility of three or more individuals being called one.

We have two visible institutions in this world that are Bible illustrations of God's idea of
oneness, marriage and the church. Of marriage, Christ said, "For this cause shall a man
leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh."
Matt. 19: 5. Of the church, Christ said, through the mouth of his inspired apostle Paul, " So
we, being - many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another." Rom.
12: 5. Christ compares the unity Of the church to the oneness of the Godhead in his last
recorded prayer.” --- THE ADVENT REVIEW AND SABBATH HERALD , VOL. 89, DECEMBER

GODHEAD = GREAT TRIUNE GOD, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - working together
(1910)

The Oriental Watchman for 1910 - Vol. 13 - No. 12

“THE HOLY SPIRIT “There is a loose habit of thought prevalent among Christians which so
separates the gospel dispensation from the one preceding it that one would almost
conclude that the very nature of the Godhead was changed at that time. But it is not so. In
the very first chapter of Genesis we have revealed the great triune God, Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. "And let us make man in our image." "And the Spirit of God moved upon the
face of the waters." Gen. 1:26, 2. It needs only the inspired interpretation of the New
Testament to fill out this picture and reveal to us Father, Son, and Holy Spirit working
together to bring light, harmony, and order out of the darkness and chaos of the beginning.

Lesson I - The Trinity

SYNOPSIS : There is one God, a personal spiritual being, the great I AM, the self-existent
One, the Creator of all things. He is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal, and
infinite in love, mercy, and justice. Associated with God in creation and redemption is his
only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, one with the Father. The third person in the
holy trinity constituting the Godhead, is the Holy Spirit, a medium through which the
Father and the Son perform the operations of creation and redemption. … " Sin could be
resisted and overcome only through the mighty agency of the third person of the Godhead,
who would come with no modified energy, but in the fulness of divine power. It is the Spirit
that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the world's Redeemer."—"Desire of
Ages," page 671.” ---THE YOUTH'S INSTRUCTOR, OCTOBER 19, 1909; p.12

GOD MEANS THE GODHEAD, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (1913)

The Present Truth for 1913 - Vol. 29 - No. 48

'Thus the Scriptures everywhere teach plainly that the Creator is the only Being worthy
to receive worship. Holy men of God speaking as they are moved by the Holy Ghost,
emphasize this thought. And the reason assigned for adoration by holy beings in heaven is
:—"Thou art worthy, 0 Lord, to receive glory and honour and power : for Thou hast created
all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created." Rev. iv, 11.

God is worshipped because He is Creator; and God means the Godhead, Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit; for all are mentioned as having part in creation. "And God said, Let us make
man." Gen. i. 26. Again we are told that "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the
waters." Gen. i. 2. And yet again we have the inspired testimony that the Father "created all
things by Jesus Christ." Eph. iii. 9.

The Apostle John makes the creative power of the Son of God the very foundation of the
Gospel. Only the Creator can redeem, therefore the beloved disciple would leave no room
to question either the divinity of our Lord or His part in creation. "In the beginning was
the Word," testifies the aged evangelist, "and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him ; and without
Him was not anything made that was made." "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt
among us." John i. 1-3, 14. “

THE TRUE GOD CONSISTING OF THREE PERSONS (1911)

Signs of the Times - Australian - for 1911 - Vol. 26 - No. 24

“Is Triple Immersion Scriptural?”

R. W. Munson

Why, then, it may be inquired, did Christ use that form of the verb ? And why did He
command His disciples to baptise converts into the name of the Godhead—the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit?

Let us remember that the Greek word baptizontes really means when correctly translated,
immerse, dip, or plunge ; immerse being the best word to convey the idea expressed in the
Greek, for "baptise" is only a transliteration of the Greek word, and means dip, pour, or
sprinkle according to the creed of the reader. But as every intelligent student of Greek
knows, baptise properly means to immerse, to submerge, as its use in the New Testament
clearly demonstrates. Therefore, in order to get a lucid understanding of our Saviour's
command it is necessary for us to translate the Greek word instead of transliterating it.
Then let us read the text as thus translated, and we have the command of Christ in this form
: " Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations, immersing them into the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." The frequentative form conveys but one idea,
and that is the great number of times the disciples and their successors were to administer
the sacred ordinance of baptism to the multitudes that were to believe on Him. The reason
for repeating the names of the persons of the Godhead was that the heathen world might
be led to a distinct recognition of the Almighty God who made the heavens and the earth,
and who was known in the former dispensation pre-eminently as THE FATHER, while
under the new dispensation He is pre-eminently to be known as THE SON, while in all ages
He is especially represented in the world by the third person of the Godhead, the Holy
Spirit. Paganism, popery, and infidelity fail entirely to either rightly know or truly
represent the ever-living God. It is left for pure Protestantism to proclaim to the
world the true God consisting of three persons but of one spirit and aim. "I and My
Father are one."

THREE GLORIOUS PERSONS IN ONE ONLY GOD (1900, 1903)

The Present Truth for 1900 - Vol. 16 - No. 26

“THE HOLY SPIRIT.

THE Spirit of God which moved upon the face of the waters was the Holy Spirit, whose
existence is thus made known to us in the very beginning of the Bible. The Holy Spirit
united with the Father and the Son to create the world, as He still unites with them to
save each soul, — three glorious persons in one only God over all, blessed for ever. We
are here taught that, although soon after, the plants, the animals, and man, with all the
wonderful works of creation, sprung from the earth and the waters, yet it was not the earth
and the waters which produced them by any virtue or power in them, — it was the creating
Spirit who prepared them, and caused them to spring forth. How beautiful and significant is
the expression, "The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." The Hebrew word
translated "moved " refers to the movement of the wings of a bird as it hovers over the
nest. What more beautiful emblem could be found in all nature to signify the lifegiving
creative power, than that of a bird hovering in silence over the lifeless egg from which a
beautiful and graceful creature will soon burst forth—bright and gay as the peacock, pure
as the swan, dazzling our eyes with its beauty like the humming bird, or charming our ears
with sweet sounds like the nightingale”

Power of United Prayer

J. FRANK TOLSON

"I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall
ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are
gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst tof them." Matt. 18: 19, 20. A careful
study of this scripture will reveal wonderful possibilities for the children of God in united
prayer. In fact, the possibilities are simply unlimited. " If two of you." Two is the human
unit, as three is the divine unit. The man is not complete without the woman, nor the
woman without the man. The two together make the human unit, as the three persons of
the Godhead form the divine unit. …”

BLENDED PERSONALITIES. The King's Messenger.

“[The Holy Spirit] is one with and sent by the Father, and the Son. … He [the Holy Spirit]

THE GREAT TRINITY OF HEAVEN RIGHTFULLY RECEIVES WORSHIP (1899, 1907)

Bible Training School for 1907 - Vol. 06 - No. 06

“Rev. 19 :10; 22:9, 10. Twice John was forbidden to worship this angel. The Father, Son,
and the Holy Spirit are one, and receive worship. Each one represents all the other
members of the Trinity. 1 John 5 :7; John 10 :30; John 5 : 23; Psa. 139: 7-13; Luke 1 : 35.
Gabriel was only an angel bearing a message from the great Trinity of heaven, and could
not receive worship.”

TRIUNE DEITY - baptism in the name of the TRIUNE DEITY (1905)

Atlantic Union Gleaner for 1905 - Vol. 04 - No. 30

“In the afternoon, at 3: 30 I conducted a singular baptismal service in the home of a sick
sister who, although bedridden, anxiously desired a burial with Christ. A bath tub was
procured, and after a straight talk on the necessity of baptism and salvation through it, I
buried Sister Jennie Bagley in the name of the triune Deity. I was assisted in the rite by
Deacon Carr. You can scarcely imagine what a change came over the suffering sister as she
arose from the water. As her faith, so was it unto her. Even those who stood around as
witnesses were afraid as to the outcome, until the testimony borne by the sister removed
their fear and increased their faith in the wonderful power of God. She is now fifty per cent,
better than she was ere she took the step. Let the Israel of God pray for this sufferer. The
time is not far distant nor the days many when "He shall wipe away all tears from our eyes ;
and there shall be no more death, nether sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any
more pain, for the former things are passed away."

DIVINE TRINITY (1906)

Signs of the Times - Australian - for 1906 - Vol. 21 - No. 29

The Unpardonable Sin.—No. 3.

By R. HARE.

“When sending out His disciples to teach all nations, Christ directed them to baptise "into
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Matt. 28: 19, R.V.
This command evidently recognizes the fact that the transgressor has, to some extent,
sinned against the Father, against the Son, and against the Holy Ghost ; that sin had put him
out of harmony with duty, but now that the sin is forgiven and the mind of obedience
accepted, the sinner is brought into harmony with the divine Trinity again.”

THREEFOLD WORSHIP - the WORSHIP of the FATHER, the SON, and THE HOLY GHOST
(1901)

The Youth's Instructor for 1901 - Vol. 49 - No. 08

Revelation 14:9-20; "Thoughts on the Revelation," Pages 626-637: (1901)

“What Is the Mark of the Beast"— ….those who refuse to worship the beast, or receive his
mark, are spoken of as keeping the commandments of God. For many centuries the beast,
or papal power, required the world to observe Sunday, the first day of the week, in place of
the seventh day of the week, as commanded in the fourth commandment. Sunday was
bequeathed to the papacy from paganism, and later was adopted by Protestantism. In
obeying the Sabbath commandment as handed down from paganism, instead of the fourth
commandment of the law of God, one worships the power that changed the law, and by so
doing he also worships " the dragon which gave power unto the beast." It is a threefold
worship,— a counterfeit of the worship of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The
dragon (paganism) is the father of it; the beast (papacy) has given it to the world; while the
image (apostate Protestantism) is the power whose world-wide influence helps to induce
every one to worship this man-made institution. Those whose names are in the book of life
are the only ones who will refuse this worship, and will receive the seal of the living God.”

SATAN'S ERRONEOUS TEACHING THAT THERE IS NO TRINITY OR TRIO (1909)

Australasian Union Conference Record for 1909 - Vol. 13 - No. 29

R. HARE

The Trinity.

“ Where Satan cannot lead into absolute unbelief, he will endeavour to mystify so that the
belief remaining may prove ineffectual. From the confusing idea of "one God in three Gods,"
and "three Gods in one God " [i.e. THETRADITIONAL CATHOLIC VERSION]—the
unexplainable dictum of theology—the enemy gladly leads to what appears to be a more
rational, though no less erroneous idea — that there is no trinity, and that Christ is
merely a created being.

But God's great plan is clear and logical. There is a trinity, and in it there are three
personalities. We have the Father described in Dan. 7 : 9, 10, a personality surely — the
"Ancient of Days" enthroned. In Rev. 1 : 13- 18, we have the Son described. He is also a
personality. The appearance and form of the Holy Spirit is not described. He is the agency
whereby God revealed His Word to man, and of Him Christ declares, " He shall not speak of
Himself." John 16 : 13. Hence the man who speaks much of himself has not a very close
acquaintance with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is spoken of through the Scriptures as a
personality.

These divine persons are closely associated in the work of God. Christ speaks of Himself
and the Father as "one." But this union is not one in which individuality is lost. Christ
would have His people one even as He and the Father are one. But we know that the union
of God's people is to be one of mind not of personality (John 17 : 21-23). This is set forth in
the admonition to "be of one mind." 1 Peter 3 : 8. With these scriptures agree the words of
the Spirit ill these latter days :— "There are three living persons in the heavenly trio. In
the name of these three powers— the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost—those who
receive Christ by living faith are to be baptized, and these powers will cooperate with the
obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new life in Christ."—Mrs. E. G. White,
in Bible Training School, February, 1906. This is indeed a divine trio, but the Christ of that
Trinity was not a created being such as His angels.”

Person in the Trinity, that same Person of Whom we read in our Bibles, Who was born of

“Christ Restored to the Supreme Place in Faith and Doctrine

The Sabbath (1912)

The change of the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week was a direct blow
at the supremacy of the Son of God. God, the Son, the second Person of the Trinity, was
the Agent in creation. "All things were made by him, and without him was not anything
made that was made." John 1:1-3, 14; Col, 1:13-17; Heb. 1:1-3. It was God, the Son, who
"spake and it was done, who commanded and it stood fast." It was God the Son who rested
on that first seventh day of time, and after resting, who blessed and sanctified for all
eternity each recurring seventh day of the weekly cycle.”

THE ETERNAL DIVINE SON, CO-EXISTENT and CO-EQUAL with his FATHER, involves
the eternity of his being (1907)

Review and Herald for 1907 - Vol. 84 - No. 03

“The Place and Mission of Christ

Now I wish to call attention especially to the meaning of this movement, its meaning as
applied to the present generation and the work that is to be done in this generation. Going
back to the beginning, and following the history of the work of the gospel up to the present
time, you will find that there has been one central point of attack always, not always in
terms, and not always openly, but there is one question in controversy, and that question is
concerning the place that the Son of God should occupy in his relation to God and his
creatures, the relation that the Son of God sustains to the created beings and created things.

The divine Son involves the eternity of his being, co-existent and co-equal with his
Father, and standing next to the Father, and being the agent, the representative of the
Father, so that every revealing of God in his work in every way has been through his
eternal Son.

And it was the controversy over this question, as to the place that his Son should occupy,
which led to the first outbreak of trouble in heaven.”

CHRIST was CO-EXISTENT WITH THE FATHER from the everlasting eternity of the
(1911)

The Oriental Watchman for 1911 - Vol. 14 - No. 01

“WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST?

J. S. JAMES

From Everlasting to Everlasting

The words of the wise man will aid us to understand this theme as far as the finite mind can
reach. Of Christ, under the personification of wisdom, he says: "The Lord possessed me in
the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the
beginning, or ever the world was made, . . . when he prepared the heavens, I was there . . .
when he appointed the foundations of the earth, then I was by him, as one brought up with
him and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him." Prov. 8 :22-30. To this agree
the words of the Psalmist, "Lord, thou has been our dwelling place in all generations. Before
the mountains were brought forth or thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even
from everlasting, to everlasting, thou art God." Ps. 90: 2. Observe the expression used
here to describe the infinity of Christ, "from everlasting to everlasting. " In other
words, from the everlasting eternity of the past to the everlasting eternity of the
future. That this passage from the Psalms has express reference to Christ is clearly seen by
comparing it with a similar passage in Isaiah. The prophet tells the incarnation of Christ
thus: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon
his shoulders and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the
everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." Isa. 9:6. Here the name "God" is applied to the
Son, and also the "everlasting Father." The Apostle Paul in the first chapter of Hebrews
quoting from the forty-fifth Psalm, verse six, makes use of exactly the same expression.

Old Testament Writers

It is in this light that. Christ is understood and portrayed by all the Old Testament writers,
not a Christ of a corning age; but a Christ then present; not a Christ whose beginning dated
from his birth in human form amid the humble surroundings of a Judean stable, but one
who was everlasting, all-powerful, and co-existent with the Father; not a son merely of
Joseph the carpenter, but the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

CHRIST IS GOD THE SON; WHILE THREE PERSONS IN THE GODHEAD (1914)

Signs of the Times for 1914 - Vol. 41 - No. 01

“CHRIST THE CREATOR OF EVERYTHING

Creation is Christ's act. There are three persons in the Godhead — the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. God the Father chose to perform the work of creation through His Son.
"For by Him [Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth,
visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers :
all things were created by Him, and for Him." Col. I : 16. Christ is here declared to be the
Creator of everything in the universe, God being His counselor (Gen. I : 26), and the Holy
Spirit the agency (Gen. I : 2) by whose power it was accomplished. Christ is also called
God, as we see from Heb. : 8, to: "Unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and
ever. . . . And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the
heavens are the works of Thine hands."

It is here stated that Christ, who is called God the Son, and who bears the scepter of the
kingdom as His badge of authority and power, in the beginning founded the earth and
created the heavens. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and
without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life." John I : 1-4. Christ, the
living Word, was therefore the Creator by whose word all things were made.”

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE THIRD PERSON OF THE DEITY (1897)

Review and Herald for 1897 - Vol. 74 - No. 29

“G. C. TENNEY

THE DISPENSATION OF THE SPIRIT.

The very beginning of the sacred record brings to view the Spirit of God as an active agent
in the work of creation ; and it has ever been an active force in the divine operations. But
men have not always recognized its agency, or perceived the presence of the heavenly
representative. But whether perceived and appreciated or not, the Spirit of God has ever
done its office work in the hearts and lives of men ; and such as yielded to its control
learned to feel their dependence upon its influence. In the prophetical writings we have
frequent references to the third person of the Deity. The Psalms also abound in allusions
to the divine Spirit. Indeed, we may conclude that men have ever been as dependent upon
the Holy Spirit for every good motion and impulse as they are now....

Those who are trying to gain heaven without the constant aid and guidance of the Spirit are
following a vain pursuit. How blest are we who behold the grand truth of the Spirit's
mediation ! What a privilege to know his indwelling power ! There is but one step higher,
and that is to be brought into the immediate presence of the Father from whom all
blessings flow. In the coming dispensation God himself will be our leader and companion.
There, associated with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we shall delight to
study the wonderful plan by which the infinite God has revealed himself to finite man.”

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ONE OF THE TRINITY AND HAS A PERSONALITY (1910)

Bible Training School for 1910 - Vol. 09 - No. 07

“Is the Holy Spirit a person? The Holy Spirit is represented in the Bible as one of the
Trinity. Of the Holy Spirit, Christ said that it 'proceedeth from the Father' ; and, 'He shall
testify of Me.' John 15 : 26. In many instances in the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is
spoken of by the use of the personal pronoun 'He' and 'His'. From this we would conclude
that the Holy Spirit has a personality… It is evident that the Holy Spirit is one of the
Trinity, and fully represents God and Christ, and the Trinity”.

HOLY SPIRIT = THE GLORIOUS THIRD PERSON OF THE BLESSED TRINITY (1913)

The Oriental Watchman for 1913 - Vol. 16 - No. 06

“The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

ARTHUR L. MANOUS

Its Office and work

SOME have been accustomed to think, though without warrant, that the Holy Spirit,
commonly called the Third Person of the Trinity, was not given until New Testament
times. But of course all Bible students know that such thinking is in error. The Holy Spirit
has been actively at work in the world, and especially upon the hearts of men, from the
very beginning….

Of the Jewish opinion regarding the Spirit in Gen. 1: 2, Mr. Melanchthon W. Jacobus, D. D.,
says:—

The ancient Jewish tract Sohar explains it of "the Spirit of Messiah." See 1 Pet. 1 :11. The
glorious Third Person of the blessed Trinity is here referred to. whose lifegiving agency
was engaged in the material creation. —Jacobus' Notes on Gen. Vol. 1, p. 64. New York,
1873.

The Holy Spirit an Agent in Creation

Mr. Matthew Pool speaks of the Spirit in Gen. 1: 2, and its work as: —

The Third Person of the glorious Trinity, called the Holy Ghost, to whom the work of
creation is attributed (Job 26: 13), as it is ascribed to the Second Person, the Son (John 1:3
; Col. 1:16, 17; Heb. 1:3) , and to the First Person, the Father, everywhere.—Pool's Notes

HOLY SPIRIT FORMS ONE OF THE TRINITY AND WHAT IS ATTRIBUTED TO GOD THE
FATHER AND CHRIST, EITHER IN WORD OR WORKS, IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE HOLY
SPIRIT (1907)

The Worker's Bulletin for 1907 - Vol. 19 - No. 01

“IS GABRIEL THE HOLY SPIRIT?

A friend asks. "Is the angel Gabriel the Holy Spirit?" We answer most decidedly, No, not
according to the Bible. If we follow the Bible, the Holy Spirit forms one of the Trinity. ...
That which is attributed to God the Father, is attributed to Christ, and what is attributed to
God and Christ, either in word or works, is attributed to the Holy Spirit. Gabriel is an angel,
and an angel is another order of beings, created by Christ, "For by him were all things
created, that are in heaven, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him." Col. 1:14-20; Heb.
1:5-8, n, 14. Christ was in every sense above angels. This is the teaching of the scriptures
from Genesis to Revelation. Angels, therefore, are a separate order of beings; no angel is
ever called the Holy Spirit, Gabriel says of himself, "I am Gabriel thatostand in the
presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee." He is of the highest order of angels, next
to Christ, the mightiest of the angels; he was Christ's guardian angel; he occupies the
position that Satan once occupied; he is not God or Christ or the Holy Spirit, he is not of
their nature; he is a heavenly minister, the one sent to Daniel and to John on the Isle of
Patmos; he is the one that brings revelations to the prophets. The position that Gabriel is
the Holy Spirit will lead to other very dangerous errors”

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PERSONAL GOD - THE THIRD PERSON OF THE GOD-HEAD with
attributes of Deity; we must recognize that the Holy Spirit is not merely an influence -
both the Old and the New Testaments refer to Him as a REAL PERSONALITY; Holy Spirit is
more than a saving, friendly influence - He is our personal Friend (1914)

The South African Missionary for 1914 - Vol. 13 - No. 21

BIBLE STUDY

The Holy Spirit

1. Who is the Holy Spirit ?

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the God-head.

a) The attributes of Deity are ascribed to the Holy Spirit in the Word of God :—" Eternal,"
Heb. 9 : 1 ; " Omnipresent," Psalms 139 : 7-10 ; " Omnipotent," Luke 1: 35 ; " Omniscient," 1
Cor. 2 : 10, 11 ; " Creator," Job. 33 : 4 ; etc.

b) In this study, we must recognise that the Holy Spirit is not merely an influence ; both
the Old and the New Testaments refer to Him as a real personality. God wants us to see in
the Holy Spirit more than a saving, friendly influence ; He is our personal Friend , — a
personal God.

NOTE,—" The Holy Spirit is Christ's representative, but divested of the personality of
humanity, and independent thereof. Cumbered with humanity, Christ could not be in every
place personally. Therefore it was for their (the disciples) interest that He should go to the
Father, and send the Spirit to be His successor on earth. No one could then have any
advantage because of his location or his personal contact with Christ. By the Spirit, the
Saviour would be accessible to all. In this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had
not ascended."—Desire of Ages, p. 669.... NOTE,—" In describing to His disciples the office

MANY have tried to receive the Holy Ghost as an EMOTION OR AN INFLUENCE - He

should be received as a PERSON (1906)

Union Conference Record for 1906 - Vol. 10 - No. 26

G. B. STARR

“The Holy Spirit.

Paul at once inquired into what they were baptized ; for one who had been baptized into
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Matt. 28 : 19), should have
received the Holy Ghost at that time just as truly as he received the Father and the Son, and
in a similar manner. We fear that many have tried to receive the Holy Ghost as an
emotion or an influence, when according to His name and position, given Him by Jesus in
introducing Him to the disciples, He should be received as a person. The Holy Scriptures
everywhere attribute to Him all the characteristics of a person. He has a name, the
Holy Spirit, associated equally with the Father and Son. Matt. 28 : 19. He has a mind.
Rom. 8 : 26, 27. He has a good mind, capable of comprehending "all things" even " the deep
things of God." 1 Cor. 2 : 10. He has an excellent memory, able to recall and bring to our
remembrance "all things," said Jesus, "whatsoever /have said unto you." John 14: 26, This
represents perfect knowledge and a perfect memory, and how much we stand in need of
just such help close at hand, even in and through us now. To be used by such an one is not
to be left helpless and weak. John 14 : 18. He is a teacher of the highest order and
qualifications, with the highest recommendations. "He shall teach you all things," said Jesus.
"He will guide you into all truth. He will shew you things to come. He shall receive of mine
and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father bath are mine." John 14. He surpasses
all others as a linguist, as He is able to speak all the languages and dialects of earth. Acts 2 :
4-11. He is able to create, which God only can do. Gen. 1 : 2 ; Job 26 : 13. He created us all.
Job 33 : 4. And it is by Him that we are recreated, being born of the Spirit. John 3 : 5, 6, 8 ;
Gal. 3 : 3 ; 4 : 6, 29 ; Rom. 8 : 8-17 ; 1 John 5 : 7. The Spirit is eternal in His existence. Heb.
9 : 14. "Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God." It was through
the Holy Spirit that Jesus wrought miracles. "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God,
then the kingdom of God is come unto you." Matt. 12 : 28. We shall be able to east out devils
only by the same power. Matt. 10 : 7, 8. The Holy Spirit is the greatest power presented in
the Word of God. Zech. 4 : 6. The Holy Spirit has a will and exercises it in everything
pertaining to the church and work of God. 1 Cor. 12 : 4-11, "Dividing to every man severally
as He will." He directed who should labor together in the gospel. Acts 13 : 1-5, where they
should labor and where not. Acts 16 : 6-15.

The Scriptures teach that there are three persons in the Godhead. Matt. 28 : 19 ; 1 John
5 : 7. Jesus through the Spirit of Prophecy gives to the Holy Spirit the position of the third
person of the Godhead.

"In describing to His disciples the office work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus sought to inspire
them with the same joy and hope that inspired His own heart. He rejoiced because of the
abundant help He had provided for His church. The Holy Spirit was the highest of all gifts
He could solicit from His Father for the exaltation of His people. The Spirit was to be given
as a regenerating agent, and without this the sacrifice of Christ would have been of no avail.
The power of evil had been strengthening for centuries, and the submission of men to this
Satanic captivity was amazing. Sin could be resisted and overcome, only through the
mighty agency of the third person of the Godhead, who would come with no modified
energy, but in the fullness of divine power. It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has
been wrought out by the world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure.
Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature. Christ has given
His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil,
and to impress His own character upon His church. " The preaching of the word will be of
no avail without the continual presence and aid of the Holy Spirit. This is the only effectual
teacher of divine truth." "Desire of Ages," T. E. pp. 802, 803.

"There are three living persons of the heavenly trio ; in the name of these three great
powers,—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Those who receive Christ by living faith
are baptised, and these powers will cooperate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their
efforts to live the new life in Christ." "Testimonies for the Church," Series B, No. 7, page 63.
Let us so receive the Spirit, and pray that the "work will be done in the simplicity of true
godliness, and that the old, old times will be back again when, under the Holy Spirit's
guidance, thousands were converted in a day."

THE HOLY SPIRIT NOT IS ONLY AN INFLUENCE, BUT A PERSON – A PERSONAL HOLY

THE HOLY SPIRIT A PERSON (1898)

“Is the work that has been noticed in these articles done by an influence ? — There is an
influence and a power, it is true; but we should not make the mistake of believing in an
influence simply, when we so much need the One who carries the influence and power. The
Holy Spirit is Christ's personal representative in the field; and he is charged with the work
of meeting Satan, and defeating this personal enemy of God and his government. It seems
strange to me, now, that I ever believed that the Holy Spirit was only an influence, in view
of the work he does. But we want the truth because it is truth, and we reject error because
it is error, regardless of any views we may formerly have held, or any difficulty we may
have had, or may now have, when we view the Holy Spirit as a person. Light is sown for
the righteous." ---R. A. Underwood, Review and Herald, VOL. 75, No. 20.;, MAY 17, 1898.;

THE PERSONAL HOLY SPIRIT EARLY SDAS DENIED (1901)

Review and Herald for 1901 - Vol. 78 - No. 10

“DOUBTING

The King's Messenger

UNBELIEF is sin; distrust brings death; worrying is disobedience, and — to doubt is to be

doomed. Sadness, sorrowing, sickness, and sin are the fruits of doubting. The taproot of
trouble is doubt. The source of joy is trust. Belief in God scatters trouble, removes the blues,
and 'brings in the light. The reason of the lack of success of life ,and power in the Church, in
,the individual, is simply the lack of faith — not faith in doctrine or dogma, but faith in God.
We believe man, but we doubt God, and doubting, we disobey.

"Receive ye the Holy Ghost." Ye shall receive power, the Holy Ghost coming upon you.
We doubt. We do not desire Him. We seek joy, happiness, safety, holiness, usefulness
— but not Him. We accept legal and moral precepts and theological beliefs in place of
the personal Holy Spirit, and we doubt His presence and abiding power. We ostracize
and deny Him. We grieve Him by our distrust of Him, and He is not permitted to enter
our hearts to control our lives; and, therefore, we are weakness and not strength; doubt has
the supremacy, and sin reigns.

Received by faith, and He will energize our entire being; will turn profession into practice,
and make us temples for His indwelling, while we walk in the light as He is in the light; for
in Him is no darkness at all. Doubt is dark. Faith is light. Have faith in God. Faith is the gift of
God.” ---(ADVENT REVIEW AND SABBATH HERALD, VOL 78; MARCH 5, 1901.; No. 10, p.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AN INDIVIDUAL AS THE FATHER OR THE SON (1911)

Columbia Union Visitor for 1911 - Vol. 16 - No. 27

“Jefferson (OHIO)

Dr. W. J. Venen spent Sabbath, May 27, with the Jefferson church.

There was a large attendance at the services; members from Ashtabula, Conneaut,
Richmond Center, and Harpersfield, besides the home members, being present.

After the Sabbath-school, Dr. Venen spoke on the personality of the Holy Spirit, proving
from the Scriptures that he is a person, one of the Trinity; not an intangible influence,
but as much an *individual as the Father or the Son; that he is a comforter, a teacher,
and a guide into all truth; and that it is the privilege of each of us to have his abiding
presence in the heart.

After the service a pleasant repast was enjoyed under the trees, all the members having
brought lunches with them. In the afternoon Dr. Venen spoke on the "Seal of God."

The services were enjoyed by all, each feeling that the time had been pleasantly and
profitably spent.”

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON, ETERNALLY A DIVINE PERSON ….Exactly as Christ is a
person and as God is a person. (1907)

March 27, 1907

“Christian Loyalty.—I” The Medical Missionary, 16, 13, p. 98.

ALONZO T. JONES

And the Holy Spirit is a person. This great truth is not recognized, indeed it is not
believed, by more than a very few even of Christians. For everybody knows that almost
invariably, with very, very few exceptions, the Holy Spirit is referred to and spoken of by
Christians as “it.” But the word “it” never applies to a person. The word “it,” in the very
genius of our language, refers and applies only to things, never to persons; to things of
inanimate substance, as a stone, a horse, a tree; or to things of concept, or experience, as
space, height, breadth, peace, joy, grief, an impression, an influence. But the Holy Spirit is
none of these: the Holy Spirit is not an influence; nor an impression, nor peace, nor
joy, nor any thing. The Holy Spirit gives peace, and gives joy, assuages in grief, makes an
impression, exerts an influence; but the Holy Spirit is none of these things, nor any other
thing. No, eternally no! The Holy Spirit is a Person, eternally a divine Person. And he
must be always recognized and spoken of as a Person, or he is not truly recognized or
spoken of at all.… the Scriptures make perfectly plain the truth that the Holy Spirit is,
none other than a living, speaking, divine, and eternal person. Exactly as Christ is a
person and as God is a person. Indeed Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit as proceeding from
the Father, just as he speaks of himself as proceeding from the Father. Of himself Jesus says:
“I proceeded forth and came from God.” John 8:4 Of the Holy Spirit, Jesus says that he
“proceedeth from the Father.” John 15:26. Therefore to be consistent those people who
persist in speaking of the Holy Spirit as “it,” should also speak of Christ as “it,” and of God as
“it.” But as certainly as any one speaks of God as HE and of Christ as HE, he must also speak
of the Holy Spirit as HE.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AN OBJECT OF VENERATION [WORSHIP] (1896)

Review and Herald for 1896 - Vol. 73 - No. 23

“From the figures which are brought out in Revelation, Ezekiel, and other Scriptures, and
from the language which is used in reference to the Holy Spirit, we are led to believe he
is something more than an emanation from the mind of God. He is spoken of as a
personality, and treated as such. He is included in the apostolic benedictions, and is
spoken of by our Lord as acting in an independent and personal capacity, as teacher,
guide, and comforter. He is an object of veneration [worship], and is a heavenly
intelligence, everywhere present, and always present. But as limited beings, we cannot
understand the problems which the contemplation of the Deity presents to our minds. (3)
Undoubtedly the Comforter is the Holy Ghost. It is so declared in John 11 : 26 : "But the
Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name." He does not
come to us through the agency of angels ; he is sent direct from the Father by the Son. And
for reasons noted above, he is spoken of with the personal pronoun as an intelligent,
independent existence.“

THE SPIRIT OF GOD is one of the three living persons in the heavenly Trio, Thus we
must believe the personality of the Holy Ghost (1911)

Lake Union Herald for 1911 - Vol. 03 - No. 47

Elder Thompson's Talk November 14, 1911, 2 P. M

“The thought of the irresistibility of the movement of this work in the foreign fields has
forcibly impressed us all that there is a divine Personality that is in charge of the work of
the Lord here in the world. The Personality is here on this earth. When Jesus went away,
He did not leave His possession here without any attention; He had a Representative to
take charge of things. The Spirit of God is called the third person of the Godhead. If we
believe the Bible, unquestionably we must believe the personality of the Holy Ghost,
though we are unable to define that personality. This Comforter whom Jesus
Promised to send, is one of the three living persons in the heavenly Trio, the Father,
the Son, and Holy Spirit.”

THIRD PERSON OF THE BLESSED TRINITY - NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH REVOLTING

PANTHEISTIC DELUSIONS (1900)

Review and Herald for 1900 - Vol. 77 - No. 40

Sermon - CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NOT SCRIPTURAL. (Leaflet No. 21, " Royal Dainties.")

But the ominous thing is that every text-book we have examined on the subject brings the
art into acknowledged connection' with pantheistic and Buddhistic principles. The mind
which acts on mind is irreverently confounded with the Eternal Mind; as, for example, in
the "Primitive Mind-Cure," by W. F. Evans, a Christian scientist, the author, after quoting
one who declares that an idea directed upon the seat of a supposed ailment causes a stream
of nervous energy to flow toward the secreting organ, says: " This nervous energy I prefer
to call the universal, divine life-principle in nature, the alcasa of the Hindu metaphysics, an
all-pervading, omnipresent, vivific principle of life and motion, identical in its higher
aspects with the Holy Spirit of the Gospels." This we call pantheism of the most revolting
type —a confounding of the third person of the blessed Trinity with a secretion of the
nerves.”

FAITH IN THE TRIO OF THE GODHEAD will in last days destroyed; a PERSONAL HOLY
GHOST will be discounted and made to appear only as an influence (1907)

Review and Herald for 1907 - Vol. 84 - No. 47

Who Shall Be Able to Stand?

(Week of Prayer Number - Reading for Wednesday, December 18)

R. A. UNDERWOOD

The last days are fraught with perils on every hand. Man's faith in a personal God in
heaven will be destroyed, if possible. His hope in a personal divine Saviour, who was
crucified for our offenses, raised for our justification, and is now seated at the right hand of
his Father in heaven as our High Priest to make an atonement for our sins, will be assailed
by philosophy, science, and every device of Satan's master mind. A personal Holy Ghost in
charge of the work of grace, under God and Christ, as their representative and appointed
agent, to accomplish the work of regeneration of man's soul, body, and spirit, will be
discounted and made to appear only as an influence.

When faith in the trio of the Godhead is destroyed, and the One delegated with
authority to resist and conquer man's foe is rejected as naught, we are left to the
cruel buffetings of Satan, with no power to resist our adversary. In this way man's
faith in any special work of God to be done in the earth or in the sanctuary in heaven
under the threefold message of Revelation 14 is destroyed.

TRINITY IN THE BIBLE (1914)

“Prayer, Bible Study, and Victory Over Sin

S. N. HASKELL

In the Bible the Trinity meet, and our relation to the Bible is simply a manifestation
of our relation to God, the Holy Spirit, and our Saviour Jesus Christ. If we love to study
the Bible and receive from it daily food for our soul, then we shall love, like Mary, to sit at
the feet of our Lord and listen to his gracious words; but if we neglect to study our Bibles,
like Martha we shall be so cumbered with our daily cares we shall have no time to receive
instruction from the Saviour were he to visit us in person.

MAY WE ALL IN GLORY PRAISE THE TRIUNE THROUGH ENDLESS DAYS (1905)

“The Soul's Devotion.

NOT a leaf on yonder tree, Not a blade of grass that grows, But proclaims a Father's love,
And a Father's care, for me; As all nature does His will, So would I my life fulfil.
Not a star that gems the sky, Not a cloud that floats through space, But obeys its Maker's
law, Night and day, with willing grace; So, my-soul, rejoice and sing, Glory to our Saviour
King.
For His love for sinful man, When He left His Father's throne; For the work which He has

THREE INTELIGENCES OF THE GODHEAD OR THE DEITY WE SIN AGAINST (1912)

“The Sin Against the Holy Ghost No. 2

Now, in the divine plan there are three intelligences associated—Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. And while there are two ways of sinning and two conditions under which
the mind of man may transgress, from God's standpoint there are three limitations
by which sins are classified— sins against the Father, sins against the Son, and sins
against the Holy Ghost.
In the commission given to the disciples by the Master, they were to go forth and
baptize in the "name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Matt. 28: 19. It
is thus to be seen that the sinner is out of harmony with the Father, with the Son, and
with the Holy Ghost. When the mind of rebellion is put away, then he is to be raised from a
symbolic grave, as one who is in perfect accord with all of Deity.”

URIAH SMITH ACKNOWLEDGED THE TRINITY IN 1896 BEFORE HIS 1903 DEATH

“Do the Scriptures warrant praise to and worship of the Holy Sprint? ...in the formula
for baptism, the name “Holy Ghost,” or” Holy Spirit,” is associated with that of the
Father and the Son. And if the name can be used thus, why could it not properly stand
as a part of the same *TRINITY in the hymn of praise, “Praise Father, Son and Holy
Ghost”?”

43, pg. 685

J.H. WAGGONER TOLD JAMES WHITE IN 1879 THAT THE SPIRIT IS A PERSON

"I have thought considerable about the matter you wrote of, though
I have been too busy to apply my mind to it. But there is one query
which will arise in my mind. It is on question of the personality of the Holy Spirit. The
more I think of it the more I am inclined to believe that the generally received view [i.e.
the Trinitarian view] is correct…We know that the word spirit in Greek is in the neuter
gender, and in Hebrew, feminine. The Hebrew has no neuter gender. But it is generally
conceded that the Authorized Version (KJV) is correct in using masculine pronouns
when referring to the Holy Spirit. Instance, John 14:16,17,26.
We [Seventh-day Adventists in 1879] ordinarily use *IT instead of he - perhaps it is
allowable. But, to it are ascribed attributes of personality, as power, intelligence,
emotions: - it instructs, guides, moves to speak or do, is grieved, etc. But most of all, we
are baptized into name of the Holy Spirit. ... in the rite of baptism the name of the Holy
Spirit is placed with those of the Father and Son, and to the Holy Spirit is given such
prominence in creation, in redemption, in everything.
As much as I have studied on this subject -and you know that for years my study in the
Spirit has not been small- I am not prepared to take a positive position. I am yet a
student, or an inquirer, ready to be convinced by sufficient reasons. I can appreciate
this, that to remove the Spirit from that position assigned to it in the Scriptures, would
be no small error. Perhaps, in the light of Matt. 12:22-37, no greater error could be
committed. It is this which has, for years, prevented my speaking with positiveness on
the subject.
But if the Spirit is a personality, and is third in position and power with the Father and
Son, then it would be an offense against the Spirit [not to give him that position]."

PERSONAL AND WORSHIP-WORTHY
GODHEAD BEINGS!!

"...let us [SDAs] consecrate to Him ["the Lord" our God] all that we are, and all that we
have, and then may we all unite to swell the songs, “Praise God, from whom all
blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly
host; Praise Father, Son, *AND Holy Ghost.” ---E.G. White, RH January 4, 1881

“When we have accepted Christ, and in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit have pledged ourselves to serve [i.e. reverence, honor, worship and obey;
see Joshua 24:15; Psalm 100:2] God, the Father, Christ, *AND the Holy Spirit --the three
dignitaries and powers of heaven--pledge themselves that every facility shall be given
to us if we carry out our baptismal vows to "come out from among them, and be . . .
separate, . . . and touch not the unclean thing.” ----E.G. White, Manuscript 85, 1901

"As the saints in the kingdom of God are accepted in the beloved [or Paradise] , they
hear: “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world.” And then the golden harps are touched, and the music flows
all through the heavenly host, and they fall down and worship the Father and the Son
*AND the Holy Spirit." ---E.G. White, Manuscript 139, 1906.
“You are born unto God, and you stand under the sanction and the power of the three
holiest *beings in heaven, who are able to keep you from falling… When I feel
oppressed and hardly know how to relate myself toward the work that God has given
me to do, I just call upon the three great Worthies, and say: You know I cannot do this
work in my own strength. You must work in me, and by me, and through me… And this
is the prayer that every one of us may offer. [Keeping in mind that it’s only to who is our
God we should pray to]
---E.G. White, Manuscript, 95, 1906

“The Holy Spirit is the Comforter, in Christ’s name. He personifies Christ [or
impersonates him], yet is a distinct personality [or separate individual]. We may have the
Holy Spirit if we ask for it ….” ---E.G. White, Manuscript 93, 1893

“We need to realize that the Holy Spirit, who is as much a person as God is a person, is
walking through these grounds. ---E.G. White—Manuscript 66, 1899 (From a talk to
the students at the Avondale School, Australia.).

“The Holy Spirit is a person, for He beareth witness with our spirits that we are the
children of God. When this witness is borne, it carries with it its own evidence… The
Holy Spirit has a personality, [or individuality] else He could not bear witness to our
spirits and with our spirits that we are the children of God. He must also be a divine
person….” -- E.G. White, Manuscript 20, 1906.

"God says, [notice after this whom she means says this] "Come out from among them, and
be ye separate, . . . and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a
Father unto you [notice hereafter who is speaking as “I” and “the Almighty” here], and ye
shall be my sons and daughters, saith [or pledges] the Lord Almighty." [Now notice
carefully] This is the pledge of [not one person, but] the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit [i.e. the *pledge to receive and be a Father to you]; made to you if you will keep your
baptismal vow, and touch not the unclean thing… In order to deal righteously with the
world, as members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King, Christians must
feel their need of a power, which comes only from the [three] heavenly agencies that
have pledged themselves to work in man's behalf. After we have formed a union with
the great THREEFOLD POWER [singular; collective], we shall regard our duty toward the
members of God's family with a sacred awe.”

THE BIBLE IS THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY AND IT
TELLS US WHY WE CANNOT ESCAPE WORSHIPPING
THE FATHER AND SON AND THEIR HOLY SPIRIT:

"Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." ---
Jesus, Matthew 4:10

"When he [God the Father] bringeth in the firstbegotten [Jesus] into the world,
he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him." ---Hebrews 1:6
"Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they [his disciples] came and held him by
the feet, and worshipped him." ---Matthew 28:9
"Of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the
Lord Christ." -- Colossians 3:24
"At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and
things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father." --- Philippians 2:10-11
"And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth,
and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing,
and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the
throne [the Father], and unto the Lamb [Jesus] for ever and ever." --
Revelation 5:13
"2 Cor. 3:17 The Lord [i.e. either Jesus or the Father] is the Spirit: and where
the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." [See Acts 5:3-5; 2 Sam. 23:2-3]"

Here is the KEY question people need to consider:

If God the Father appears in 'bodily' form on his throne in heaven, but
also visits us ‘in person’ via the person of the Holy Spirit "sent" away
from his throne to our bedroom as we pray, and if he also ‘visited us’ for
33.5 years on earth via the person of the human Messiah in flesh (i.e. as
“God with us”; 2 Cor. 5:19), which manifestation of divinity is not God
(or divine) enough to be worshipped?

-the Father on his throne in heaven?

-the Father in invisible presence here on earth via the personal Holy
Spirit who represents him everywhere?
- Or the visible Son of God who represents God in flesh?

To reject any of the above listed as worthy of worship presents a serious

dilemma, folks!! And this dilemma is easily proved in the Bible with
Scriptures galore. How can one worship God who is a spirit and is "THE Holy
Spirit" (2 Sam. 23:2-3; 2 Cor. 3:17, 18) yet refuse to worship the very Holy
Spirit which brings him in REPRESENTATIVE but personal invisible presence
to Church? It’s like saying you will worship God but you refuse to worship
him REPRESENTED in flesh via Jesus the human Messiah ( who’s “God with
us”); the very Jesus who was worshipped by the angels, higher beings than us
humans (Heb. 1:6)!! A rather IMPOSSIBLE notion indeed!!

Each time we worship God, we automatically worship God as the

"eternal Spirit" (Hebrews 9:14; John 4:24; 2 Sam. 23:2-3; Acts 5:3-5).
And if God reveals that he can be bodily on his throne in heaven, and
here invisibly in the form of the personal Spirit who’s “sent” to
represent him or his very presence (Psalm 139:7-10), how can one
refuse to worship him as the Holy Spirit? And remember that the very
fact that God REPEATEDLY lists the Spirit separately but also alongside
himself and His Son, tells us we MUST accept the Spirit both as one with
him (1 Cor. 2:9-11) and also distinct from him, but equally bearing his
own name (Matthew 28:19; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Cor. 12:4-6, 11)!! Thus what is
due God is likewise applicable to his Spirit who represents him in
invisible essence everywhere.

All true SDAs know, by the biblical evidence which became plain overtime
(and backed by confirmation through Mrs. White’s prophetic ministry), that
we cannot worship God (as Rev. 14:6-7 demands) and not worship His
Son and His Holy Spirit as a "distinct personality" among "three
persons" of divinity!!
THAT SETTLES THE ISSUE ONCE AND FOR ALL, AND ANY “PROTEST”
SEEN HEREAFTER AGAINST THESE PLAIN REALITIES AMONG SOME SDAs
YOU CAN BE SURE THE “PROTESTOR” IS MISGUIDED AND IS A FALSE
SDA MEMBER!!
As I close, I cannot but point out to you, dear reader, the sad traits observed in many
(not all) of the SDA dissidents who daily act as “accusers of the brethren” and are
now “protestors” against the plain truth. Many of the dissidents sadly display the
following traits (*quote from Lazarus Castang)

Let’s pray for them that God will humble them and release them from the chains of
self-deception that they have allowed themselves to be in. I am certainly doing so
myself (i.e. praying for them and myself), even as I do what Isaiah 58:1 calls me to do,
i.e. lift up my voice like a trumpet, and, speaking fearlessly and frankly, but with the
deepest love for all concerned, show my people in Zion where they are going
wrong….i.e. living in denial and refusing to accept historical and biblical truth when
it becomes evident!!! I also pray that those of us on the Trinitarian side recognize the
much-neglected and denied truth *ALWAYS TAUGHT BY OUR SDA PIONEERS (i.e.
BEFORE AND AFTER 1888 AND 1915) about “the only begotten Son” who was
“brought forth” from all eternity of the Father’s own substance, since many of us on
the Trinitarian side of the debate are as stubborn those on the anti-Trinitarian side
to accept all truth when it becomes
plain.
