TECHNICAL SUMMARY SHEET Cholesterol Complex with Plant Sterols (VL084) Indications Cholesterol Complex with Plant Sterols

has the following benefits:

Cardiovascular Health Both policosanol and plant sterols may hold key roles for those at risk or with cardiovascular disease. A 2005 study showed that policosanol and phytosterol combination reduced total and non-HDL-C in hamsters5. Policosanols cholesterol-lowering ability is well documented in the literature1, as is plant sterols2. Our Product Our Cholesterol Complex offers a dose of 20 mg of Policosanol and 950 mg of Corowise plant sterols. Corowise is a trademark of Cargill. Dosage Taking 2 tablets per day is consistent with the FDA approved health claim. Specifications Product Name: Label Claim: How Supplied: Drop Count: Product Code: References

Policosanol Mechanisms of Action Policosanol (Saccharum officinarum L.) is comprised of alcohols isolated and purified from the wax residue of sugar cane plants1. Animal studies suggest it inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Five to 20 mg per day of policosanol shows reduction in cholesterol more so than statin drugs2. It causes a reduced synthesis and increased breakdown of HMGCoAa rate-limiting step in the endogenous manufacturing of cholesterol1. It also has been linked in research studies to lowering platelet aggregation through its ability to reduce thromboxane B2 (TXB2)1. Finally, studies show it decreases LDL oxidation, a key process in the development of atherosclerosis1. Plant Sterol Mechanisms of Action Plant sterols, or phytosterols, are found in many plants (and wood pulp) in nature. In supplements, they are usually found as unesterified fatty acids. Phytosterols inhibit the absorption of cholesterol from the diet and prevent its re-absorption of endogenous cholesterol in the body. Upon ingestion of supplemental plant sterols, hydrolysis in the small intestine occurs, where most is transported to the liver to be glucuronidated and eventually excreted2. Pelletier, et al found that subjects ingesting phytosterols had significant reductions in plasma total and LDL cholesterol3. Effects of cholesterol reduction were also seen in functional foods fortified with plant sterols. Patch, et al. found that routine consumption of margarine with added plant sterol/stanol reduced serum cholesterol of hypercholesterolemic patients4.
