(1) Several greenish blue flares uere observed ascend-

and, upon exploding, briefly illuminated the sky,
(2) Several greenish explosions or gloos on the ground
nere reported. in the target aroa. Crans reported the appearance of
these glo...s seemed to be' coordinated ai th' the searchlights, This
apparentl,y a similar, it not the same, phenomenon described in
the Tokyo area on XXI Bomber Ccmnand Mission No, 183 (details ot
nbich appeared in XXI Bomber Command Tactical Mission Report).
(3) Six crelvs reported a series of red or amber ground

lights or flares rrere estimated to 00'10 to 20 miles apart ani nou1d

passed over, The sequence of turning tbem on and off nas done in
such a manner that the B-29's ground patb nas \1e11 def'ined. This
same phenanenon was reported around Nagoya, From tbe avai 1-
able information there seemed to bO no relationship between these
lights ani flak defenses. However, the possibility exists that trese
lights might be used to define the 8-29 flight paths to vector enem;y
interceptor aircraft.
(4) One cren reported that about 100 possible rockets
came up fran 5 positions just south of Fukuoka. About one half of
these rockets bad ltt'een trails, am one balt red trails. They as-
