( 2) Enemy Ant iaircraft. Based on averaSe winds for
this area , 260 degr ees at 106 knots . the best r oute of appr oac h
insofar as anti airc raft fire was concerned wall on a headins between
70 and 120 degrees. Howeve r, the strength of the antiaircraft
defenses, 1 2 heavy gunG, did not warrant making enemy antiair c raft
opposition a primary considerat ion in selecting the axis of attack.

e. Over Target:
(1) Primary Target: '\'lith visibility over the
being estimated at 30 miles and with weather conditions be t-
ter than predicted. 84 of the 100 effective aircraft bombed the
primary target, These aircraft bombed in 9 fo r mations , with 70
dropping their bombs on the 9 l eade rs and 5 mak ing indirldua1
range sightings. Clouds encountered were tilO stratocumulu. between
2000 and 8000 feet, wi tb 1/10 to 2/10 coverage over the target.
A total of 187 tons of ge neral purpose bombs and 49.5 tons or inoen-
diary bombs were dropped fro. altitudes of 26,000 to 29.400 teet
from l00605Z to l00641Z. (See Anne x E. Part I. Consolidated Sta-
tistioal Summary. for details.) Damage assessment reyealed 755,900
square feet or root area were clama.ged in tha tar!e t area.

craft fire was reported weak and inaccurate from initial point to
target area . and also the same in the target eraa. Once again
one of our aircraft reported seeing what ViaS believed to be
phosphorous bomb. It spread in umbrella-like fashion. with long
white streame r s, Over the target area at 29 , 000 feet an enemy
a ircraft released a prOjectile described as a -ba ll of fire' . It
was not seen to explode. passing about 200 yards over the forma-
tion.

Part III, for details): Interpretation of photogra.phs obt&ine d on
12 February assessod visible damage t o 755, 900 square feet or
roof area, representing 33.5 per cent of the total building area.
A ma.jor portion of damage was confined to the east halt or the
plant. It was reported possible that the ren:aining part ID&j' be
still op'srational, or could be made operational in relatlnly
short time.
