If theres one thing the Al-
varado Lady Indians can take
from last seasons 12-21 finish
and 1-9 District 8-3A campaign,
its that its not how you start, but
how you finish.
That adage is used a lot to de-
scribe a turnaround season. The
same is true for Alvarado, just
not in a good sense.
I was flabbergasted, to tell
you the truth, head coach Jill
Barkey said. Before district
play, we had a winning record for
a time. That hadnt happened
since Id been there.
But when district started, we
just lost our consistency and
started missing hits. Wed never
experienced that kind of suc-
cess.
Barkey returns several players
from that team to try again.
Barkey said her biggest retun-
ing threat is junior Amber Cha-
tham, who she calls a power hit-
ter.
Along with Chatham, the
Lady Indians will return four
other starters from last years
team.
Seniors Kristen Mann, Tara
Sloan and Amanda Thomas are
back, along with junior Brianna
Penner.
Barkey said one of the more
exciting aspects of this years
team will be the infusion of a tal-
ented core of younger players
featuring sophomore Shelby Fra-
zier.
Well have quite a few new-
comers this year, so itll be inter-
esting to see how it goes, she
said. This little sophomore
group is pretty talented.
Barkey said her team has a lot
to be excited about, and mentioned
she has continued to see increasing
interest during the summer in the
volleyball program.
With the exception of
Shelby, she said. All have
played together for three years,
so theres this good team dy-
namic already.
Theyve done a lot of stuff
already which involves playing
camp and summer league.
The last few years have seen a
resurgence in the Alvarado boys
athletic departments with the
football team soaring to the state
playoffs last year and the basket-
ball team making the postseason
for the first time in nine years.
The Lady Indians programs;
however, have continued to
struggle.
Barkey said she wants volley-
ball to change that.
With the work we did in the
offseason, and with the strategies
weve implemented, thats going
to play a huge role when we play
some of these tougher teams,
she said. That Robinson tourna-
ment is going to be tough but Im
excited to see that put into effect.
Alvarado is in the same dis-
trict as perennial power Kenne-
dale and Barkey said its up to
the Lady Indians to make their
mark.
This year, were prepared
better, she said. When we first
started in this district, it felt like
we could always count on beat-
ing Hillsboro and Venus.
When that didnt happen last
year, we would kind of freak out.
We need to learn to not do that in
that situation.
With all these newcomers on
varsity, Im interested to see how
they handle it.

The Lady Elks have competed
through the years with the same
intensity that sports writers get
after Mamas pizza.
They dig in and hunker down
for the duration, devouring oppo-
nents in the process.
Burleson, though, is a little
different this year. Directing
things is first-year coach DAnna
Newton, who begins her third
year in the district taking over a
program with good history.
This opportunity came up
and I was very fortunate to get
it, said Newton, who coached at
the Kerr Middle School before
transferring to the high school
last year to become an assistant
basketball and track coach along
with her academic duties.
I want things to be disci-
plined with good communica-
tion. [Former coach] Jill Kimball
has done a great job.
Im taking a little bit of what
she did and a little stuff of mine
and mixing together.
Whether the concoction that
follows is a return to the playoffs
wont be known until the games
are played out the next few
months.
Nonetheless, the word re-
building is a term heard about
town, which to Burlesonites is
equivalent to mentioning the
cancellation of My Life as Liz.
You just dont say those
things.
The cupboard isnt exactly
bare.
It never is at this place. Qual-
ity volleyball players here are as
common as traffic and stop lights
on Wilshire.
Six return from a playoff team
in 2010. Kimballs third-place
finisher in District 7-4A was
eliminated in bidistrict by Ste-
phenville.
Senior outside hitters Andrea
Dewberry and Alex Irby, along
with junior outside hitter Abby
Seamster and sophomores Holly
Milam (middle blocker) and Al-
ana Hughes (setter) form the core
of what Newton hopes is a play-
off returner.
We have to come together as
a team and everybody has to
have the right attitude and work
extremely hard, Newton said.
Im very excited.
Its looking good. It should
be exciting.

The Godley Lady Cats return
a great deal of experience in
2011, but also lost key pieces
from last year's playoff team.
They will be without Brady
Sanders, Ashley Allen (a three-
year letterman), Abby Kelley, all-
state libero Janette Villegas, set-
ter Megan Campbell and setter
Chelsee Clark. Sanders and Allen
were forces on the front row for
the Lady Cats.
We're going to be inexperi-
enced," head coach Todd Weese
said. "But we've got some good
kids coming up off our JV team
which tied for first in district
play last year.
We'll be starting over at the
setter position.
Weese said Godley will return
both middle blockers, but filling
the libero hole left by Villegas
will be another story.
"Janette did such a good job
for us," he said. "It's going to de-
pend on how the new players
step in. They're not necessarily
young, they're just inexperi-
enced."
Godley will bring up senior
Dallas Young at the outside hitter
spot along with senior Rachelle
Johns who "might play setter."
Seniors Lauren Phillips and
Mikala McDonald will also re-
turn for Godley bringing the total
to eight.
"Other kids who are probably
going to make the varsity are ju-
nior Lynsie James and sopho-
mores Courtney Traylor and Cal-
lie Mantooth."
Traylor and James are setters
and Mantooth is an outside hitter.
Key returners for Godley will
be seniors Tolli Wylie, Anna
Perez, Brittney Neill, Bailey
Watson and junior Maelan
Brown.
"I think they all played well at
the end of last year," Weese said.
"They played a lot during our
playoff run. I think our seniors
will be good leaders.
"Tolli and Anna have been on
varsity since they were sopho-
mores so the leadership from them
will be really good. Those kids that
have played on JV, five of them
have played together, so they'll
have really good chemistry."
Godley's main district compe-
tition will be Peaster and Brock,
Weese said. Godley lost both dis-
trict games to Brock last year and
took the Lady Eagles to a fifth
game in the playoffs.
"Brock has their all-state set-
ter and middle blocker back so I
expect them to be strong," he
said. "Peaster is probably going
to be second. It'll be the same
situation as last year where we're
fighting for our lives."
Weese said the seniors have
set high goals in all the sports
they play, and volleyball will be
no different.
"This class of kids has been
maybe one of our best ever," he
said. "They've set to go further
than the regional quarterfinals,
which is the farthest we've ever
been."

The Cleburne Lady Jackets
volleyball team is without Floyd
Rogers roaming the sidelines for
the first time in nine years.
Rogers left for Odessa to pur-
sue business opportunities after
helping lead the Lady Jackets to
the playoffs the last two years,
and after 13 years with the pro-
gram.
Former Crowley assistant
coach Sara Hinson is now the
head coach for the Lady Jackets,
who return 10 seniors from last
years fourth-place team, and its
her first as a head coach.
She was an assistant with the
Lady Eagles before moving to
Cleburne and she said the Lady
Jackets need to prove themselves
to her and have done so since
practice started on Aug. 1
Based on what Ive seen dur-
ing open gym and during two-a-
days, the seniors are the first ones
to enter the drills and the last ones
to leave, she said. Theyre try-
ing to help in any and every way
possible.
Lacy Stinebaugh heads up the
senior class at the setter position.
Stinebaugh is a four-year letter-
man and is one of the players Hin-
son said is assuming her leader-
ship role.
She and Kaci King have re-
ally stepped up right off the bat,
Hinson said. Those two have
stepped up and are pushing the
others to work hard in practice.
Also returning for the Lady
Jackets are seniors Alexa Neal,
Jade Fails, Kayla Ingram, Danika
Slokovic, Macie Cashiom and
Stephanie Morin. Juniors Hillary
King and Kendall Jones also re-
turn.
Cleburne has a talented group
of underclassmen led by sopho-
more Brianna Reband, who
started for the varsity last year as
a freshman.
Hinson said the thing which
has impressed her most about this
years team is its chemistry.
They all work really, really
well together, she said. They
kind of feed off each other and if
one steps up, then the rest of them
do.
Theyre right behind each
other doing it and they work re-
ally well as a group.
Courtney Connor is another
returner for the Lady Jackets.
Hinson said the team has had
to prove themselves and re-earn
their positions with her as the
head coach.
Kendall has been pretty pow-
erful, she said. Jade has also im-
proved a lot over the summer and
her timing is coming around.
Brianna is another one of our
strong hitters. Courtney will be
able to provide us with another
setter.
Hinson added the underclass-
men are helping to set the tone.
Its not just the seniors, she
said. And thats exciting.
Morin and Jones were two of
Cleburnes main offensive weap-
ons last year. Reband took home
newcomer of the year honors in
District 7-4A.
Cleburne finished in fourth
place in the 7-4A standings last
year behind Burleson, Summit
and Granbury.
Hinson said she expects the
experienced Lady Jackets to be up
near the top of the pile this year.
I think this is our chance,
she said. I expect us to compete
for the district title.

The Burleson Centennial vol-
leyball team this year will do
what no other team in schools
two-year history has ever done.
Play a varsity schedule.
And if you think the fact of
inexperience in the big leagues
will lower the Spartans expecta-
tions of themselves think
again.
I think if they continue the
team mind-set and if they work
as hard for what they say they
want , coach Melissa Cole
said. The say they want it.
Wait, wait, wait.
What is it, coach?
They want to make the play-
offs, said Cole, no inexperi-
enced coach. She built playoff
teams in each of her four years at
Azle before accepting the posi-
tion at the new high school in
Burleson last year.
Theyre aiming high. Their
mind-set is: Lets go after every-
body like were in to win the
whole thing and see where we
wind up. You never want to shoot
lower than what you can do.
No jockey ever won a horse
race encouraging his beast with
whoa.
That there is a fact, as is the
reality that the Spartans have not
one senior or anyone with any
varsity experience.
We dont have seniors, so
were very young, and thats OK
with me, said Cole, who added
that she has had to spend more
time than she should might ordi-
narily on basic fundamentals
with her inexperienced bunch.
My kids are better than at the
end of last year.
Our defense is strong, and
were getting there with our of-
fense.
Centennial will play in Dis-
trict 7-3A against such stalwarts
as Bridgeport, Castleberry, Deca-
tur, which has 12 seniors, Lake
Worth and Mineral Wells.
The Spartans junior varsity
went 19-14 last year with some
nondistrict varsity games mixed
in.
Key players include sopho-
more libero Katie Revrovich and
juniors Brenna Moritz, and out-
side hitter, and Courtney Co-
lomo, a middle blocker.
The Spartans can be defined
as inexperienced, but no one,
Cole said, can define her teams
drive.
Well give teams a run for
their money, Cole said. They
want to prove that we may be
young, we may have less experi-
ence than you guys, but were
working just as hard and we have
the talent and attitude to do it.
Theres that word again
it. The playoffs.
Regardless of the outcome,
though, the Spartans will live
their schools creed.
To Royal Blue and Silver, we
pledge our loyalty. We, Spartans
of Centennial, will strive for vic-
tory.

Winning has become a tradi-
tion for Grandview volleyball.
From 2009's regional finalists
to advancing to the regional
quarterfinals the last two years,
head coach Stacy Bartosh said
she knows her players, both new
and old, realize what's at stake
when they sign up to play volley-
ball at Grandview.
The expectation and stan-
dards have been set by the teams
before them, she said. "They
understand the position they're in
and they know they're playing
for Grandview. We're always
wanting to be the best we can be
and we want to let the tradition
bring that out in us."
Grandview finished in second
place in District 15-2A last year
with a 26-12 overall record and
an 8-2 mark in district play be-
hind Whitney.
Grandview returns seniors
Randi and Rikki Self, Raven Mc-
Grath, Melody Mayse and Kelly
Richardson, along with juniors
Brittany Tschoepe and Kalani
Basham.
Bartosh described this year's
team as versatile and called it the
most veteran club since 2009.
We have some designated
back-row players, she said. For
the most part, this team is really
versatile and we have some girls
who can play both front and back
row. I expect to see a lot of our
girls in a lot of places.
Melody and Kalani are spe-
cifically defensive specialists.
Everyone else goes back and
forth from the front row to the
back row.
Bartosh added she expects
Tschoepe and Randi Self to con-
tinue to anchor the Lady Zebras'
offensive attacks at the outside
hitter position.
I expect a lot from them
since they have the most var-
sity experience, she said. I
have several girls who played
back row for us last year and I
know Kelly can play on the
front, too.
It's hard to say this early un-
til you put that team together.
Grandview only lost three
players to graduation in Chanci
Pruitt, Portia Henry and Taylor
Price, so the Lady Zebras will
have plenty of experience.
I feel like we're going to be a
new team, but I still feel like
we'll be a solid team, Bartosh
said. This is a solid ball club
and I feel like we have what it
takes to win the district title.
I don't want to discount any-
one, but we've just got to put the
work in.
Champion Whitney was hit
hard by graduation, Bartosh said,
and that leaves the door open for
Grandview to claim the District
15-2A title.
I think we'll continue to do
what we've done in the past, she
said. We're a ball-control team
and we're going to be fundamen-
tally sound.
This year, we might look a
little different offensively, but
we're a year older.
Bartosh added that juniors
Harley Griffith, Paige Pollack and
Alexis Wheeler will be expected
to contribute immediately after
moving up from the JV team.
They're all three nice con-
tributors, she said. I'll expect
them to contribute one way or
another to the team.

The Joshua Lady Owls are
looking to compete for a playoff
spot in their second year of Dis-
trict 7-4A play. Head coach
Heather Strebeck said an attitude
change in the offseason and with
the upperclassmen this year may
do the trick.
Joshua returns seniors Mor-
gan Howard and Sarah Hanick
from last years team, which fin-
ished on the outside looking in of
the playoff picture.
Also returning are juniors
Katherine Martin, Maddison
Moad and Hannah Nelson.
The biggest positive improve-
ment, Strebeck said, in the influx
of 20-25 JV players who made it
their business to improve over
the summer.
Theres a big group that
worked really hard this summer
and played in club league and
found a summer league coach to
help them, she said. They prac-
ticed twice a week, and its
helped us come back and look a
lot better.
From that group are two
freshmen in Callie Payne and
Ashley Brackel, who Strebeck
said can make a positive impact
right away.
I was a little afraid of bring-
ing them up just because the
level of speed from eighth grade
to varsity, she said. Its a huge
change, but because those two
have played club all year, theyve
figured out their cohesion.
The older girls have defi-
nitely made them feel at home
and its been great.
Strebeck said the upperclass-
men and seniors on the team feel
a burden to succeed, but arent
trying to pass it off as a personal
mission.
Theyre very good positive
leaders who believe in the pro-
gram and our goals for the pro-
gram, she said. They help mo-
tivate and take it upon them-
selves, but not in an overbearing
way like weve had in the past.
Theyve learned how to even
that part out and not have a do it
for me and me only because Im
a senior attitude. They handle it
respectably and the other players
absolutely feed off of that.
Having so many players on
the JV who practiced hard over
the summer increases the pros-
pects for the varsity team, Stre-
beck said.
Its given us a lot more to
choose from, skill-wise, she
said. The summer workouts
have helped them tremendously
and theyve come in ready to do
team stuff instead of us having to
break it down and work on our
skills.
Strebeck said all of this means
the Lady Owls will have more
options on both sides of the ball
than in years past.
The upperclassmen who
worked their tails off are here
and theyre ready, she said. Its
been great. Defensively, I think
well be a lot better, and weve
got some things we havent had
in the past on the front row.
We have four hitters now
and a good balance on the offen-
sive and defensive sides of the
ball. Now they just need to exe-
cute when it comes to be game
time.

The Keene Lady Chargers are
facing a familiar dilemma for the
2011 season theyre small.
But that doesnt stop Keene
from being competitive, head
coach Michelle Smiley-Connelly
said.
The Lady Chargers lost Illi-
ana Castillo, Holly Wilson, Sarah
Gow, Lorina Kurn and Shanon
Anitak to graudation, but return
plenty of young experience in
sophomores Jenna Bulles and
Emily Aaron.
Also returning for Keene are
junior Keishla Morales and se-
nior Jamari Munoz.
Castillo was Keenes setter
last season and an all-district se-
lection. The Lady Chargers need
to rebuild around their younger
talent, Connelly said.
Whitney was definitely the
team to beat last year, she said.
Their size was a factor. Then
you have Rio Vista and Grand-
view who are teams to beat and
in the fight for that third place
spot.
Clifton was really young as
well.
Connelly said being young as
well as small presents a lot to
overcome, but said she has faith
in her Lady Chargers if they can
focus on the basics and maxi-
mize their strengths.
Were trying to figure out
our roles right now, she said.
Were learning that anything is
possible and, if we can sell the
idea to the kids, that we can beat
anyone.
Also on the varsity will be ju-
nior Amanda Langmos and fresh-
man Zayda Gonzalez.
Connelly had high praise for
Gonzalez.
Shes a very consistent
server and a good all-around
player, she said. The bad thing
is were all short. Were smaller
than last year so were going to
have to rely a lot on digging the
ball, playing defense and our
serving.
Connelly said her team will
realize when it steps out on the
court that theyre mostly going to
be at a size disadvantage, but
added the Lady Chargers cant
let that effect the outcome of the
game.
I think theyre going to be
aware of that, she said. Its go-
ing to focus on us playing smart
and hard and really working on
placing the ball. I can see us get-
ting better as the year goes on.

The Rio Vista Lady Eagles
are coming off a historic 2010
season in which they made the
playoffs for the first time in
years.
The Lady Eagles have several
adjustments to make this year
with previous coach Tina
Meadors gone and new head
coach Liza Guajardo in.
Meadors had brought a bit of
continuity to the program staying
for two years, but Guajardo said
she likes the talent level she has
for the 2011 season.
Rio Vista returns juniors
Krissa Reese and Jordan Rotha,
along with senior Bailey Sim-
mons. Other seniors are Lauren
Clayton and Elysa Torres.
Theyre good at working
hard, Guajardo said. Every-
thing Ive asked, theyve done.
Im trying to make sure they
work hard and get the basics
down. Its about having fun as
well.
Guajardo hails from McAllen
where she coached volleyball
before heading to Rio Vista.
She said Rio Vistas strength
will be in its outside hitters.
I have two pretty strong hit-
ters, she said. Rotha will be
valuable for us as our setter and
Krissa and Bailey will be our big
hitters.
Guajardo said she expects Rio
Vista to at least contend for third
place again in the fall, and aspire
to reach even higher in 2012
when Rotha and Reese are se-
niors.
I want them to be learning
everything they can and to learn
the game so well so that next
year, it should be easier for them
to reach the playoffs, she said.
The playoffs are our goal this
year, but next year it should be
even more reachable.
Rio Vista will bring up sopho-
mores Megan Bonham, Haley
Hennith, Brittany Hutchison and
Shelby Montgomery. They will
also have juniors Macy Moreno
and MaKaila Simmons.
She said she expects the un-
derclassmen to learn from the
older players.
Our goal is to be equal or
better than the last year, Gua-
jardo said. I havent seen
much of the district, but my
goal is for us to repeat in third
place or go for second place or
win the district.
