Q. I have a limited amount of space and physical ability but I love butterflies and hummingbirds. Can you suggest a few low maintenance perennials that will give me the most entertainment? A. There are a number of perennials that both entertainers love. One of my top picks is a Low and Behold butterfly bush. Its dwarf size (3-4 tall) boasts long lasting color. Caryopteris is shrub-like and has blue flowers from early summer through fall, few insect or disease problems and requires less watering than most. A few taller, multiplying favs are Liatris, Purple Coneflower, and Monardia (Beebalm). Remember, these DO spread so be ready to have a few friends over once a year to have lunch and a perennial gift. Red Hot Poker is absolutely striking! A few lower growers I love are Columbine and Coreopsis. These two plants make excellent borders. The Coreopsis will give you a great hit of yellow from early summer to late fall. The Columbine has a spring bloom but really nice, airy foliage. You could use any of these in a container but they may not over-winter. A few annuals that attract both are Verbena, Ageratum, Mexican Sunflower, Petunia, Salvia and Zenia. Enjoy the show!
