BIOSTATISTICS AND MATHEMATICAL MODELS BT-501 Cr L 5 3 T 2 P 0

Unit I: Fundamentals of Biostatistics: Review of basic notions of statistics. Measures of central tendency viz. mean, median, other quartiles, mode, measures of dispersion and variability viz. range, mean deviation, variants, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, measure of symmetry and kurtosis, covariance and correlation. Unit II: Probability and Expected values: Counting possible outcomes, permutation and combination, Probability of an event, adding and multiplying probability, total and conditional probability, Bayes theorem, Random event, mutually exclusive events, independent events, Expectation of a random even, Probability distribution, marginal and conditional distribution. Unit III: i. Theoretical Probability Distributions: (a) Discrete distributions viz. Binomial and Poisson distribution. Distinctive properties of these distributions. (b) Continous distributions viz. Normal, chi square, t, F distribution. Distinctive properties of these distributions. ii. Population and Samples: Variability of sample, population and sample; Confidence intervals: a way of precisely representing uncertainty. iii. Statistical Hypothetical Testing: One-sample, two-sample, paired-sample, multisample hypothesis. One and two tailed test. Analysis of variance viz. single-factor, two-factor, three-factor and higher order factorial analysis of variance. iv. Regression and Correlation: Simple linear regression, simple linear correlation, multiple regression and correlation, polynomial regression. v. Testing for goodness of fit: chi square goodness of fit, Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness of fit. Unit IV: Applications of statistics in Biotechnology: Genetic linkage analysis, LOD score; gene expression prediction; protein function prediction; protein structure prediction. Unit V: Mathematical models in Bio and Chemo system: General linear model; Optimal prediction models; Genetical theory of Natural selection: Darwin, Lamarck and Mendels contribution; Population growth: Logistic equation/Verhulst-Pearl model; Ecological predator-prey model: Lotka-Volterra model.
