Saecker,
J. Chem. Educ., 2009, 86, 1151.

Construction Directions
A Cut-Out Chart of the Periodic System (Periodic Table Cylinder)
The construction pattern for this chart comes in two forms: black and white and pre-colored. (The pattern
also comes in letter size and a larger (tabloid) size. The black and white versions should be colored
before cutting. The following color scheme works satisfactorily to differentiate adjacent groups.
Group 0 uncolored
Groups I and I purple
Groups II and II dark blue
Groups III and III light blue
Lanthanides and actinides sky blue
Groups IV and IV green

The photograph
shows an assembled
model of the Periodic
Table Cylinder.

Groups V and V yellow

Groups VI and VI orange
Groups VII and VII red
Group VIII triads fuchsia (pink)
1. Cut out the table along the dark bold lines (

).

2. Cut the dark bold lines located between rows, being careful not to cut beyond the end of the bold
line. (Note that the sections for the Lanthanides and Actinides are not as wide as the others.)

Note for steps 3 and following: it might be helpful to use a paperclip to temporarily hold the
cylinder ends in together while the glue dries.
3. Glue the top short strip in a loop so group VII is adjacent to group 0, using the left hand tab as a glue
point.
4. Glue the second strip from the top, thus creating a larger diameter circle so group VII falls directly
below group VII. Again the left hand tab acts as a glue point.
5. Glue the Hf (#72)At (#85) starting strip and the Rf (#104)#116 starting strip so they have the
same diameter as the previous loop.
6. Glue the ends of the lanthanide series (#54#71) and actinide series (#86#103), each creating a
smaller diameter loop and making sure that the end of each strip lines up on the glue tabs.
The final product (shown above) should have the appearance of a cylinder of varying diameters sharing
a common backbone. The relative diameters of each loop starting from the top down should be small,
big, medium, big, medium, big.

Construction Directions
Periodic Table as a Building: Variation 1
1. This periodic table has two pieces. Cut out each along the solid, bold, black lines (
that form its outer borders.
2. Cut each periodic table piece along the solid, bold, black lines (
3. Fold the periodic table pieces along the dotted lines (
making the printed sides of the periodic table come together.
4. Fold the periodic table pieces along the dash-dotted lines (
making the non-printed sides of the periodic table come together.

).
) to create a concave fold,
) to create a convex fold,

Main Group Portion

5. Take the main group section and turn squares a and c to coincide and glue them together; then let
square b (with some glue) cover the top. Notice that the d tabs are perpendicular to a, b, and c.
6. Put some glue on the backs of the Sc (#21) and Zn (#30) squares and stick them to the tabs d1 and
d3.
7. Put some glue on d2 and cover it with tab e.
8. Let f cover e and glue the two pieces together.
9. Let k cover g and glue the two pieces together.
10. Put some glue on the back of the Be (#4) square and stick it to m.
11. Let n be covered by l; glue them together.
12. Let h be covered by p; glue them together.
13. Let the squares labeled 1, 2, , 7 at the left side of the table coincide with the 1, 2, , 7 on the
right; glue them together.
14. Bring the 1, 2, ... , 8 tabs together and let the octagon flap, that doubles over on itself, cover the
tabs. Glue the octagon flap and tabs together using the octagon as a guide.
Submodel Portion continued, over

Periodic Table as a Building: Variation 1
Submodel Portion
15. Take the lanthanides and actinides section and let let d1 and e1 cover d2 and e2. Glue them in place
forming a right angle corner. Repeat for o1 and p1 having them cover o2 and p2.
16. Let b1 and c1 cover b2 and c2 then let c3 cover c1 and e3 cover e2. Glue this assembly in place lining
up the previously glued corner. It may be helpful to refer to the photograph below.
17. Let g1 and f1 cover g2 and f2; glue them together.
18. Let m1 and n1 cover m2 and n2; glue them together.
19. Using the tabs located at the rectangular end of the lanthanides and actinides section, glue the submodel into the gap located after Ac (#89) and La (#57) so that La and Ce (#58) line up. Make sure
that the flap to the right of Lu (#71) and Lr (#103) is folded into the inside of the main group portion.
20. Glue the remaining flaps, located on the bottom of the model, to each other where they overlap for
structural rigidity.

3. Dotted (
concavely so the printed sides of the table come together. Fold the Dash-dotted lines convexly so the
non-printed sides of the table come together.
4. Glue flap a behind the group VIII A, the noble gases, lining up the rows so He (#2) is adjacent to
H (#1). The final column should have four sides and be square without any twisting down the column.
5. Glue flaps b1 and b2 to the backsides of flaps c1 and c2 respectively. Make sure to line up each flap
squarely on top of each other to prevent problems with fitting later.
6. Glue c2 to the back of He, lining up the top of c2 to the top of the group VIII A heading box.
7. Glue c1 to the backside of flap d.
8. Glue d to the backside of the flap extending off e, creating a top for the forming box.
9. Glue flap f on top of flap e.
10. Glue the s block flap on top of flap f.
11. On the lanthanides and actinides section glue the backsides of Yb (#70), Lu (#71), No (#102), and
Lr (#103) to the backsides of Ce (#58), Pr (#59), Th (#90), and Pa (#91).
12. Glue the f block flap on top of the other flaps lining up the sides to form the pentagon shape. Do so
for the bottom flaps as well.
13. Apply glue to the front and back of flaps g and h; slide them into the cut made between La (#57)/
Ac (#89) and Hf (#72)/Rf (#104). Then press the front of flap g onto the back of elements La
(#57)/Ac (#89); press the front of flap h onto the back of elements Hf (#72)/Rf (#104).
14. Apply glue on flap k (now hiding behind groups III A and IV A) and press together.
